Entrance to Grace Cole Nature Park
By Mamie Bolander

We had a little break in August, from doing our good work at Grace Cole Nature Park, and I hope you're all ready to put in a few hours on Saturday, September 15, 2018 sprucing up our own special Grace Cole Nature Park.

There are chips to spread on trails or on weeded areas of the forest to deter non-native plant growth. We may also spend some time dealing with ivy and other invasive species in the upper northwest portion of the park.

Please bring your favorite loppers, pruning shears and spades or shovels for digging out roots. Recent rain should have softened the soil a bit to enable getting those roots out.

Wear sturdy closed shoes and dress for the weather. Water bottles recommended.

Snacks and beverages provided.

Students are encouraged to participate. Those under 14 must have signed parental consent (available on site). Younger helpers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Grace Cole Nature Park can be reached by heading south onto 28th Ave NE from NE 178th in Lake Forest Park. It's at the end of that straight stretch of 28th Ave about 1/2 mile from NE 178th St.

I'll look forward to seeing you on Saturday, Sept. 15th., 9am!

Sign up for Shorecrest girls' basketball feeder teams

Tryouts for Shorecrest High School girl’s feeder basketball teams are on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 7-9pm at Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

All Shoreline-area 5th-8th grade and girls bound for Shorecrest High Schools are eligible for tryouts.

Girls from other areas are welcome if their high school doesn’t have a feeder team for their grade.

RSVP for tryouts HERE or email the organization. Tryouts are free. While feeder organizations are nonprofits, there will be a team fee to cover gym space, league entry, uniforms, and coaches. Scholarships are available.

The organization is seeking two coaches, as well as one or two more parent volunteers.

A feeder team is a team made up of girls who are in elementary or middle schools that "feed" to a particular high school (like Brookside Elementary to Shorecrest).

The goals are to build fundamentally sound players and great teammates prepared for the high school system.

The feeder program goal is to have at least one team for each grade. Kids from other area high schools that either don’t have or don’t make their feeder team are eligible to play with Shorecrest feeder teams. But they will be prioritized after local kids.

Will there be a 2019 Shoreline STEM Festival?

Will there be a STEM festival for me?
September 17th volunteer meeting will determine fate of festival

For the past six years, children in Kindergarten through 12th grade have had the opportunity to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) thanks to Shoreline STEM, a community-based, volunteer-driven nonprofit organization.

Now, as some of the organization’s long-time volunteer team is moving on to new activities, few volunteers have stepped in to take their places.

Without volunteers, the Shoreline STEM Festival will close.

“Any all-volunteer effort rises and falls on the engagement and time of able volunteers,” explains outgoing president and co-founder Terry Stevens-Ayers.
“The Shoreline STEM Festival is no exception. We have sponsors and a location. Shoreline Community College is partnering with us again to host the event on June 1, 2019. However, we’re short critical volunteers to help bring the event to life.”

Will the STEM festival sink or float?
A new president will take the helm, and part of the committee is returning from last year.

What they really need are new hands-on volunteers who can organize and publicize festival activities, coordinate science fair registration, manage the t-shirt design contest and arts activities at the festival, oversee science fair judging and awards, and coordinate with the organization’s partners and social media.

“If we have a lot of volunteers, this event is easy to manage while working full-time,” says Stevens-Ayers.
She should know, as she, along with most of the founding committee, works full-time.
“We have great documentation to support each position, and there are plenty of people here who are ready to coach new volunteers through their first year.”

The event plays a critical role in introducing children to STEM topics and STEM careers. Research indicates that children are more likely to believe that STEM topics are interesting and available to them if they have a hands-on experience like this festival in their formative years.

With interactive exhibits from STEM professionals, a K-12 student science fair, and a huge robotics expo, the STEM festival exposes children and their families to an enormous array of possibilities.

“This Festival is critical to sparking an interest in STEM careers in the next generation,” Stevens-Ayers explains. “But we can’t do it with just a handful of people. If we can’t find enough volunteers, the festival will likely be cancelled.”

The deadline is looming for the small non-profit organization. On Monday, September 17, they will host a kick-off planning meeting at 7:30pm at the Shoreline Library (345 NE 175th St, Shoreline 98155). If they don’t have enough volunteers show up, they will discuss shutting down the organization.

“If someone wants to volunteer but can’t make it on the 17th, they can reach out to me directly,” Stevens-Ayers added. “They can email me at president@shorelinestem.org, or check out our website for more information."

Police charity BBQ serves long lines of customers

Buttering the salmon

Text and photos by Jerry Pickard

On Sunday, September 9, 2018, Lake Forest Park Police Department held its Annual Salmon BBQ supporting Special Olympics at the Third Place Commons Farmers' Market in Town Center.

A steady line of customers all day

Despite the early morning's cloudiness the weather cleared and the day warmed up in time for Chief Sutton's ride in the dunk tank. He survived.

The dunk tank awaits

At one thirty pm there was still a line of customers. The BBQ Master was constantly busy cooking salmon. Officers buttered the salmon to keep it moist and tasty while cooking.

The chef was busy

A lot of salmon went over the counter for a highly successful day for LFPPD and The Special Olympics!

Shorecrest Scots hand Edmonds-Woodway their second big loss in a row

WesCo 3A South Football
9-7-18  Edmonds Stadium
Shorecrest 35 - Edmonds-Woodway 14

If my information is correct, the Shorecrest Highlanders have not beaten Edmonds-Woodway in district competition since 2005. Fortunately for the Scots, streaks are meant to be broken.

The Good Guys wore all white Friday Night as they rode into Edmonds Stadium ready to do battle with the Warriors. Woodway started their season with a crushing 52 - 0 loss to perennial 4A powerhouse Glacier Peak and the coaching staff at Shorecrest had little reason to believe the Scots couldn't hand them their second loss in a row.

Taking the opening kickoff, The Highlanders failed to move the ball during their first offensive series and after just three short plays had to punt. Warrior senior Capassio Cherry (one of WesCo's top running backs his Junior year) seemed to have no problem weaving his way through the Scots' defense, but an errant pass from QB Reed Carr resulted in an interception by Scots' Cornerback, Sammy Seliga.

The first score of the game came after a pass from #19 Eladio Fountain to Junior wide receiver Carlos Torres who found his way into the end zone for a 29 yard scoring play.

Two short minutes later the visitors added seven more when #7 Markus Selzler, who had another big game for the Scots, picked off the Edmonds-Woodway QB and took it to the house. Kicker Gavin Dalziel who can't seem to miss early in the season would add on another PAT and the Scots were soon up 14 - 0 -- a situation in which they've not found themselves in quite some time at Edmonds-Woodway Stadium.

#19 Eladio Fountain has a clear field

With the first quarter winding down, quarterback Eladio Fountain would once again hook up with Carlos Torres for a 43 yard touchdown to put the Scots up 21 - 0.

The only score in the first half for E-W came on a one yard run after several untimely penalties against the Scots kept moving the ball downfield. As the momentum seemed it could be turning in favor of the home team, Scots QB Eladio Fountain threw the perfect touchdown pass, his third of the night, to senior receiver Antonio Stillwell who made a spectacular over the shoulder catch.

The score at halftime Shorecrest 28 - Edmonds-Woodway 7

After an uneventful third quarter of play, the Warriors struck first in the 4th on a 21 yard pass play for a touchdown. A personal foul penalty was called on the Scots defense but eventually declined and the Warriors cut the Scots lead in half.-

Not too long after, the Shorecrest Highlanders would dot the "i" in WIN with a fourth passing touchdown from Fountain to Stillwell, his second of the night and Gavin Dalziel would remain perfect for the season tacking on the PAT.

This year the Scots appear to have all the pieces to put together a successful season, surpassing last years record of 5 and 5.

If the offensive line can stay healthy, open up bigger holes for Cyrus Filiteo and allow him to use his speed and agility, 100 plus yard games for the senior running back could be a regular occurrence come Friday night.

The Scots' biggest challenge so far this season comes this Friday night when they host Everett at Shoreline Stadium.

WeatherWatcher: New Weather Station, Taste of Fall Weather

Sunday, September 9, 2018

I'd like to announce an addition to my weather website. By popular request I have found a way to get a weather station set up in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Shoreline. The new station has been in beta testing since the last week of July 2018. It is performing very well, particularly with wind speed and direction and I hope to use this station as our official peak wind gust site.

Many readers have often asked how different the weather is near the Puget Sound compared to areas away from the Puget Sound. Summertime days seem to show the clearest difference, especially on days reaching the upper 80's or into the 90's. Temperatures near the water appear to be a little cooler, sometimes by up to 5-7°F. This winter could likely reveal other differences as well.

I've updated my website to show the two weather stations side by side for an easy comparison. Both stations are also live on Weather Underground's personal weather station website.  I have also added a live feed to the website to show current watches, warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service in Seattle. It should display any warnings, watches or advisories that are in effect for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Links have moved to the main webpage and are no longer on a separate links page.

Forecast: We have a period of very fall-like weather ahead for the next week and beyond. The weather pattern has changed in a way where we are seeing Pacific frontal systems move through the region now. That means much needed rainfall is expected, and has occurred which should help knock down our wildfires.

Monday-Friday: Temperatures expected to reach the upper 60's to near 70 each day, with lows in the low to mid 50's at night. Monday we are expecting showers and mostly cloudy skies. Tuesday and Tuesday evening there is a slight chance of some thunderstorms as more unstable air moves through the area. A chance of showers stays with us through Friday afternoon. Total rain fall amounts this week could be between 0.15 inches up to a half inch or more.

Next weekend: Skies start clearing up a little with sunshine and temperatures near or a little above the 70°F mark.

This month's temperature is hovering near normal. We had some warm days on the 4th and 5th. Below is the high and low temperature graph:

For current weather conditions visit my re-modeled website at www.shorelineweather.com

Humble Feast Monday with Moroccan M'smen and Roasted Carrot Spread

Patty Pan's Humble Feast is a series of community-based, monthly dinner events featuring local ingredients sourced primarily from area farmers who are our friends and neighbors at the markets.

They are held on the first Monday of every month, 5:30 to 7pm. This month - September 10, 2018 (the first Monday was Labor Day).

Monday's menu will be Mediterranean with Moroccan M'smen flatbread topped with market vegetables, lentils and rice with (or without) lamb, two kinds of hummus, green salad and plum cake.

Patty Pan's Neighborhood Kitchen: 15550 27th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

The dinners are a flat rate of $12/person (plus tax). For $10 (plus tax) discounted tickets if you prepay via PayPal by 4pm on the day of the dinner. Kids half price.

And here's the recipe for Roasted Carrot Spread

Roasted Carrot Spread (makes 1 to 2 cups)

1 pound carrots
1 bulb garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 bunch parsley
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon salt
Black pepper to taste

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cut the carrots into two-inch lengths. Break the garlic bulb into individual cloves, but don’t peel them. Toss the carrot chunks and the garlic cloves with olive oil: using your hands is the most effective way to coat them.

Arrange the carrots on a baking pan and the garlic cloves on another part of the same pan. Roast until the carrots just start to brown and the garlic cloves soften to the texture of toothpaste. If the garlic finishes cooking before the carrots, remove it from the pan and continue cooking the carrots. The garlic will take 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the size of the cloves, and the carrots will take 30 to 45 minutes.

When the garlic is cool enough to handle, squeeze the pulp out of the skins and puree it along with the carrots, parsley, lemon, salt, and pepper.
