Kenmore bans plastic bags

Saturday, July 28, 2018

On Monday, July 23, 2018, City Council adopted a new plastic bag policy effective January 1, 2019 to encourage the use of reusable carryout bags in the City of Kenmore.

The policy prohibits retailers from providing single-use plastic bags to customers at checkout and requires they charge a 5-cent fee for each recycled paper bag supplied. This fee is retained by the retailer.

The ordinance includes exemptions for in-store specialty bags (for items such as bulk foods, produce, meat, etc.) and bags for prepared foods (restaurant takeout bags), laundry, newspapers, pet waste, garbage bags, and bags where dampness could be an issue.

Additionally, low-income residents with electronic vouchers for government programs will be exempted from the 5-cent fee. Plastic straws were not addressed in this ordinance.

In Kenmore, we value our natural resources and our comprehensive plan calls for protection of natural and environmentally sensitive areas, open space, trees, air quality, and water quality. Plastic bags that aren’t recycled end up in our landfills and pollute our environment.

METRO TRANSIT ADVISORY
On Saturday, July 28, from approximately 5:00pm until 10:30pm transit service in the Seattle Center, downtown Seattle and adjacent areas will be rerouted with expected delays during the Seafair Torchlight Run and Parade.

While most buses that operate on surface streets in the Seattle Center and downtown Seattle areas will be rerouted at some point, riding transit is still the best way to get to Torchlight and other events, as many streets will be closed, traffic will be congested and parking will be limited. Even rerouted buses still go to within 1-2 blocks of the parade route. Using transit service in the downtown tunnel can you through town quickly.

Some Torchlight-related transit service revisions started Friday evening when Pine Street closed and bus service was rerouted due to the parade grandstand placement at 4th Ave. The Pine Street closure and associated transit reroutes last until about 3:00pm on Sunday.

Military personnel ride transit free during Fleet Week

USCG Mellon on the Shoreline Sea

Sound Transit, King County Metro, and the King County Water Taxi will continue their annual Seafair tradition of honoring members of the military by providing free transit service from July 31-August 5.

During Seafair Fleet Week, members and former members of the Armed Forces, including active duty, veterans and retirees, can ride free on Link light rail and Sounder trains, Sound Transit Express and Metro buses, and the Vashon and West Seattle Water taxis.

Service members not in uniform are asked to show their military identification to the transit operator upon boarding a bus or train, or to fare inspectors if requested. Valid forms of military I.D. include a Uniformed Identification Card, a Veteran Health Identification Card or a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty Form (also referred to as a DD-214).

Ships from the U.S. Navy, U.S Coast Guard, including the Mellon, and Royal Canadian Navy are expected to sail into Seattle this week, with vessels docking at piers along the waterfront for the public to tour and enjoy.

All customers riding Sound Transit and Metro trains and buses to Seafair activities should plan ahead and allow plenty of time for traffic delays and road closures. Visit Sound Transit’s alerts page or Metro’s online Service Advisories page to find out about bus reroutes or other planned service changes.

Regular fares are required for non-military riders.

Shoreline fire units assist at Edmonds fire Thursday

Shoreline firefighters cool off after fire

Information from MyEdmondsNews.com

No one was injured in a building fire at the Ridge Acres Mobile Park in the 23200 block of Edmonds Way late Thursday afternoon, July 26, 2018.

According to South County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Leslie Hynes, the fire, in a two-story building that houses a print shop on the lower floor and an apartment above, was reported around 4:30pm.

The fire went to two alarms to ensure that enough crews were available to rotate firefighters through, given Thursday’s high temperatures. Units from Shoreline and Northshore responded.

As of 6pm, the fire was contained. No cause has been established but Hynes said the fire investigator has determined the blaze was not related to a fire earlier this month that damaged the mobile home park club house. A cause for that fire was not determined.

Shoreline Fire took their rehab truck which allowed firefighters to cool off from the heat.

Cool plays in a cool place - Friday - Sunday at the Phoenix Theatre

Cool plays in a cool place – 7 plays. 10 minutes long each. At the Phoenix Theater in Edmonds

Review by Luanne Brown

No matter how long you live in this area, there are always new things to discover and enjoy. One of the things I recently stumbled upon is The Phoenix Theater. I’ve driven past it for years and didn’t even notice it. So much for my powers of observation. But now that I’ve found this neighborhood treasure, I’m on a mission to make sure everyone knows about it.

Last Friday, I attended the first performance of a collection of seven 10-minute comedic plays by local playwrights and laughed myself silly. Each play had its own point and was entertaining and well-written. Some of them, like A TRUE AND FACTUAL ACCOUNT OF THE BIRTH OF MY DAUGHTER, written and directed by Eric Lewis, is fall-down-laughing hilarious.

Not only were the plays enjoyable, but the talents of the diverse cast were well-displayed.

And did I mention that the theater is air-conditioned, and that they sell food and beverages you can eat while watching the fun? What could be better during this upcoming weekend’s expected heat wave?

This collection of plays ONLY has three more performances this coming weekend, so get your tickets today. You don’t want to miss out on the fun.

1. SEA MONSTER – written by Daniel Tarker, directed by David Bailey

Will the Sea Monster win? Or will the tides turn?

Featuring: BriAnne Green, Steve Heiret, Asa Sholdez

2. THE RIGHT BOWL - written by Pam Espinosa, director by Jane Ryan

4. MAYBE THIS TIME – written by Cathy Kaufmann, directed by Jane Ryan

Remember the Buddy Poppies? Here's how the money was spent

Compass Housing Center in Shoreline. VFW rep (2nd left) presents gift cards to
Program Manager Audrey Ouellette for the 22 veterans who live there

Blackburn-Aurora VFW Post 3348, a non-profit veterans organization based in Shoreline, distributed the net proceeds from their recent Memorial Day Buddy Poppy event. They met as a Post over a two month period to discuss and vote on which veteran-assisting organizations, and how much, that they would donate.

VFW Post 3348 member Haywood with Buddy Poppies
It occurred to them that the public, who give their donations to VFW Post 3348 members, might be interested in where their money went. Post members decided to send donations to eleven different organizations.

They offer two current examples of how those donations are used.

The first example is from the Nursing Home at the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard. This Nursing Home services 240 veterans (including their spouses) with assisted nursing care for as long as the veterans need.

They used the Post’s donation to buy "Pocket Talkers". These are listening devices for residents who don't like to wear their hearing aids. They are also used by staff in interviewing those who are hard of hearing and thus acts as an aid to communicating effectively with them.

VFW Post 3348 member Roy helped offer poppies
The second example is from the Compass Housing Alliance, Shoreline Veterans Center, just south of Costco. There are 22 veterans (men and women) who live there. VFW Post 3348 gave each of those veterans a card of appreciation for their service, along with a $50 Walmart gift card.

Above is a photo of some of the veterans who live there (the woman in the purple top is Audrey Ouellette, the Program Manager). Ms Ouellette said that each of her veterans really appreciates their gift card. You can see in the photo that service dogs are allowed.

While VFW Post 3348 members were there, they talked to some of the veterans. The veterans use these gift cards for rather basic items e.g. socks, underwear, food, toiletries, etc. While they do live there, these veterans are offered training in computer skills, resume writing and interviewing.

VFW Post 3348 member Thom offering poppies
for donations
They are offered one meal per month. Otherwise they have to buy their own food and cook it themselves. While these are homeless veterans, most have some income e.g. social security, VA benefits, etc. They are obligated to pay 30% of whatever their income is, as rent.

Some of these veterans are waiting for their VA claims to be processed which, if approved, could allow them to move out. Several have PTSD and want to move to a smaller community where they can find some peace.

One mentioned that he has to temporarily get out of Seattle during the 4th of July celebrations because the noise keys him in so badly that it drives him into a dark, very uncomfortable, place.

Overall, the veterans who received donations from VFW Post 3348 Post, openly showed their deep appreciation for getting anything. VFW Post 3348 thanks the citizens of Shoreline for their generosity and want those citizens to know that their donations went to several good causes.

-Carl Christophersen

King county Metro to increase service on Rapid Ride E in Shoreline

With investments by Amazon and City of Seattle, King County Metro will offer more frequent, reliable service on some of its most popular routes

King County Metro will offer more frequent and reliable bus service on some of its most popular routes beginning this fall thanks to significant investments by Amazon and the City of Seattle.

Amazon's investment will provide 22 additional weekday trips for two years across some of Metro’s busiest routes serving West Seattle, Shoreline, Ballard, and Capitol Hill. The additional service provides room for roughly 1,700 weekday boardings, and includes the RapidRide E Line and C Line, and Routes 8, 40, 62, and 63.

The additional service hours will be part of Metro’s September service change, which will add 88,000 service hours annually on more than 50 bus routes. This includes 20,000 hours under a separate partnership with the City of Seattle, thanks to the 2014 Seattle Transportation Benefit District.

“We will provide faster, more reliable transit service on some of our most popular routes, thanks to our partnerships with Amazon and the City of Seattle,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “Demand for transit continues to grow throughout our region, and we are stepping up to deliver.”

Positive Parenting

Shoreline resident, school counselor, and private mental health therapist Cher Anderton has scheduled two events on August 14 and 23, 2018 to support parents and families.

As a parent, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the the transition to another school year.  We can forget that what matters most is raising kids with traits like a sense of humor, self-reliance, kindness, empathy, hard working and problem solving.
Many of us may not feel as though we have the tools and skills to model and teach these traits to our kids. Perhaps this is because we didn’t have positive parenting models as we grew up, we experienced trauma as a child or as an adult, or we are experiencing a lot of stress and have little energy to put towards our children and/or we may have a child with needs that are stretching us to the max!
Whatever the reason is for you to want/need more parenting tools in your toolbelt, this workshop will support you in your parenting adventure during this hectic time of returning to school.

Artist group “City Meditation Crew” blends technology, walking, and meditation into new forms of public art

City Meditation Crew in Hamlin Park

Members of the nationally-recognized performance art group “City Meditation Crew” (CMC) will lead two 45-minute walks in the urban forest of Hamlin Park in Shoreline on Saturday, August 11 (2:30 – 3:15pm and 3:30 – 4:15pm, immediately followed by a reception); rain date August 12.

An RSVP is requested through advanced registration with the Shoreline Walks Program (mjohnson@shorelinewa.gov, 206-801-2638).

The hike is short but there are several steep inclines. The meeting point is at the park’s east side parking lot entrance on the SW corner of 25th Ave NE and NE 160th St in Shoreline 98155.

An imaginary city department complete with its own uniforms, CMC workers have inspired pedestrians to explore innovative mindfulness practices since 2009 in cities from New York to Seattle.

Partially based on the images gathered by participants in 2017, CMC has developed Meditation Circuit, a short walking loop featuring a series of meditation stations marked by colorful artwork.

Each station offers a different mindfulness-based activity intended to support well-being: listening; walking; even using cell phones as tools for meditating on the many colors of green in the park.

More on the project can be found online. After the August 11 event, the Circuit and artwork will remain in place for up to a year.

Funding for Meditation Circuit is made possible with support from the City of Shoreline Parks Recreation, and Cultural Services department, Shoreline Walks Program, 4Culture Tech Specific Grant, Michigan Technological University, and private donors.

Letter to the Editor: Decisions about tree retention will affect residents far into the future

To the Editor:

July 30 City Council Meeting, 7pm -- Tree Retention or Replacement

The Council will be discussing the Planning Commission's proposals regarding reducing tree retention / replacement in MUR 70 zones. Their decision will affect residents far into the future. Our climate is changing; it is getting hotter. Workers in cities in Asia are suffering and often unable to work due to devastating heat – 95, 111, 118 degrees. An electrician said, “It's a fact. You build a road, you cut down trees, that makes it hotter.” Some cities that had felled trees for construction projects are busy trying to plant new ones. Heat waves are increasing. Shoreline will not be immune to the “silent killer.” It is not enough to have trees in our parks and be certified as a “Tree City” if old, large evergreen trees are cut down everywhere else and puny ornamental trees are planted in their place. Please read the July 18th Seattle Times article “Scorching heat threatens to make cities unlivable” :

Submit your comments before July 30 for Council review here
