Glory Daze dahlia
Dahlia and photo by John Hibbs, ND

By Jan Hansen

The Good Books tells us that many can be involved. Some plant, some water, and some harvest.

The planters are amazing people. They labor and leave at the end of a day with little or nothing visible. Many who pass by will not even notice or care about what was done in that time and space.

Acres of dahlias bloomed on this land
belonging to Alta M Wheeler in Seattle

May I share part of my story?

The planter in this chapter was my grandmother, Alta M. Wheeler. Her dreams so often became reality and on a scale that only those who dream can imagine. Grandma dreamed of flowers and began planting. Soon in the 1920’s, acres of Dahlias bloomed on the land that is now St. Demetrios Church in the Mountlake district of Seattle.

She dreamed of sharing the beauty and aroma of flowers, so a florist shop was brought into reality.

My father and mother worked there, where stems became bouquets, corsages, and arrangements on the tables of the highbrows of Seattle’s hills.

Dahlia tubers are not handsome. One cannot see beauty in the swiveled brown mass. Grandma dreamed and planted many things into my life. I barely noticed the tubers that she planted. Of course, looking back there were hints. Several times as a young child my picture was on the Dahlialand calendar.

Those tubers were awakened by the Shoreline Area News article this May: Dahlias for Senior Center: free dahlia tubers at the Senior Center May 22.

Dahlias grow quickly, once they break the surface.

I had a vision of planting and helping. Dr. John Hibbs was there to water. He whet my appetite to see the blooms. I want to see tubers and the Senior Center thrive and blossom. The tubers from May have broken ground. I’m seeing buds and dreaming of the colors.

Almost 100 years have passed. I so appreciate my grandma, Dr. John, and the community that did, does and will bring even more glory days (Glory Daze) to our Senior Center.

Photos: Dinosaur attacks Parkwood Elementary

A large, flat-footed dinosaur takes huge bites from the roof of Parkwood Elementary and drops mouthfuls of splintered wood to the ground.

By the time you next go by the school grounds at N 155th and Meridian Ave N, the old Parkwood Elementary school building will be gone. It will be replaced by a brand new school building.

School will take place in the North City building at 816 NE 190th St during construction.

On February 14, 2017, over 19,000 Shoreline and Lake Forest Park voters authorized the rebuilds of Einstein Middle School, Kellogg Middle School, and Parkwood Elementary School and endorsed the construction of a new Early Learning Center for pre-school children (The Pratt Early Learning Center).

This capital project bond passed with a nearly 73% approval rate. While the facade of the current Parkwood is well maintained, it was selected for replacement due to the condition of the building and the need to increase elementary classroom capacity for growing enrollment in the district.

The new building is expected to be ready by Fall 2019.

Photo: View from RB Saltwater Park Trail

Did you know that there is a trail that runs around the rim of Richmond Beach Saltwater Park? You get some pretty amazing views from there.

This weather is great for photos - I have gotten many beautiful sunsets, and scenes on the water, with all the details crisp and clear.

The funny thing is that those of us who live here seem to adjust for the grey skies and haze. We think that it always looks like this photo.

When I publish photos from other times of the year, people complain about how dark they are. Hey folks - that's what it usually look like here!

So enjoy the sunny stuff while we have it and hope that the temperature drops a bit. (How can people manage living in aluminum trailers in Phoenix? I don't care how dry the heat is.)

Regional workshop on Fed proposal to reclassify nuclear waste at Hanford

Join State Rep Gerry Pollet, Executive Director of Heart of America Northwest, in the first of a series of regional workshops:

Seattle Thursday July 19, 2018 - 7pm - 8:30pm

North Seattle College Multipurpose meeting room College Center (CC) 1161. 9600 College Way N, Seattle 98103, SW corner of main campus building with visitor parking in front, just off College Way N (enter NE 95th St).

Instead of cleaning up high level nuclear waste, the Federal Energy Department (USDOE) wants to rename (reclassify) it and leave 4% of high level nuclear wastes in Hanford's Single Shell Tanks rather than removing and disposing of it in a deep underground repository. USDOE is taking comment until Sept. 7.

Washington Department of Ecology has been invited to share the State's view or concerns.

The concern is that High Level Nuclear Waste near the soil surface under asphalt and soil caps or concrete in the bottom of tanks will spread to the groundwater that flows to the Columbia River.

At the workshop, we will review this proposal and provide an update on other Hanford issues - such as the spread of Plutonium and what USDOE is planning to do with the collapsed PUREX tunnels.

Free Concert by Petty Thief, Wednesday at Cromwell Park

CONCERTS IN THE PARK – PETTY THIEF – TOM PETTY TRIBUTE BAND

July 18th, 7:00pm (rain or shine)
Cromwell Park

This concert is a part of the City of Shoreline’s Swingin’ Summer Eve! Come on out for community activities along with an awesome performance from Petty Thief, a Tom Petty Tribute band! Activities start at 5:30pm, including face painting, food booths, used book and movie sale, inflatables with Fun Rent, and more!

Gather your family and friends, and come enjoy a free performance by Petty Thief, at Cromwell Park on Wednesday, July 18th, 7:00pm.

“Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There’s not some trick involved with it. It’s pure and it’s real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things” – Tom Petty

“Petty Thief” was formed the Fall of 2006 when Guitarist/Vocalist Andy Volmer gathered up some local musician friends to put together a band to play a set of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hits at a Halloween party at a venue in West Seattle (The Rocksport). What started out as a one night stand has turned into a love affair that lasted for over 10 years now and travels all over the great Pacific Northwest!

“Petty Thief” does a musically accurate 60-120 min (depending on the show) set of Tom Petty’s Greatest Hits. No silly wigs, no costumes, no funny beards, just the GREAT music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!! Through the years, some great musicians have come and gone through the band, but right now, the band line up is sounding better than it ever has!! If you love the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t??!!!), get out there and see Petty Thief live and in action.

Plus, try some refreshing infused waters at Aegis Living of Shoreline’s free “Hydration Station.”

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Concerts in the Park are always free and held at various community parks throughout Shoreline and Lake Forest Park on Wednesdays in July and August at 6:30pm (unless otherwise noted), rain or shine. Concerts in the Park are supported by the City of Shoreline, City of Lake Forest Park, 4Culture, Aegis Living of Shoreline, and by Arts Council friends and members.

For more information and details, visit the Arts Council’s website or call 206-417-4645.

Backyard Barter at SolarFest

Join in the Backyard Barter at SolarFest

JOIN BACKYARD BARTER where neighbors barter handmade, homemade and homegrown items.

The July Barter is at NW SolarFest, July 28 at Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Set up at 2pm, bartering begins at 3pm.

What to barter

The focus is on the homemade and the homegrown. This can span a huge range of stuff - here is a partial list of trade items we have seen: fresh eggs, honey, flower, bulbs, seeds, baked goods, handmade soap, edible plants, garden seeds, fruit/vegetables/herbs, kimchi, beer/mead and jams/jellies, homemade yogurt, homemade laundry soap, homemade skin care products, redworms for vermiculture, compost tea, ornamental plants.

What to ask for in trade

The exchange value of any given item is up to each barterer. The process is a simple one, you just ask 'would you like to trade your (eg jar of blackberry jam) for my (eg loaf of bread)..' or whatever you are trading. Sometimes people will say 'no thank you' but most often the trade works perfectly. Remember, this is a cash-free exchange.

How to participate

Sign in at the Barter Area between 2 and 2:45. The sign-in sheet will have space for item descriptions, but some people find it helpful to prepare labels and/or ingredient lists ahead of time. Then set up your items. Once you have your goods arranged you can check out the other items offered for trade and meet your neighbors. Trading starts at the beginning of the second hour, and we request that people wait for the 'bell' to start their actual trading.

For additional information, see Basics of Bartering at the Backyard Barter Facebook Page or the festival site NWSolarFest.org

Scene on the Sound: USS Sampson

USS Sampson

Text and photo by Jan Hansen

Quietly sailing through the Shoreline Sea this morning was an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 102, USS Sampson. She was commissioned in 2007, and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship named to honor Rear Admiral William T. Sampson.

This is a guided-missile destroyer and carries two Sea Hawk helicopters. NavSource states that she is armed with an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, 96 VLS Cells, and 8 Harpoon Missiles. The ship’s motto “Through Courage and Arms” can be delivered swiftly at over 30 knots/hr.

Sampson returned to the Naval Station Everett in early May after completing a seven-month deployment.

She joined the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group on Oct. 3, 2017. The destroyer provided seaborne protection to the strike group, escorted high-vale ships, and served nearby communities during port calls in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.

While deployed, Sampson participated in exercises with the Egyptian and Republic of Singapore’s Navies at the Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition and Conference. She strengthen partnerships with the participation nations during combined exercises.

Sailors also served as volunteers in communities during port calls in Bahrain, Saipan, Philippines and Singapore by visiting local schools and social welfare centers. Her deployment is an example of our Navy’s routine presence in waters around the world, displaying commitment to stability, regional cooperation, and economic prosperity for all nations.

On May 10th Vigor Marin LLC was awarded a $42.2 million contract to prepare for and accomplish repair and alteration requirements for the USS Sampson’s Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (SRA). Work is expected to be completed by April 2019.

In June she was moored at the Ammunition Pier, Naval Magazine Indian Island in Port Hadlock, Wash for a three-day ammo off load.

Maybe we will see her again sailing north next April.

Photo: Floating flowers and mystery vegetables

The first thing I thought when I looked at this photo was "floating flowers". They look so airy and delicate, as if they were about to float through the air.

Not sure what they are except that they cluster like hydrangeas. The leaves look different though.

And as long as you are identifying things, can I eat these leaves?

Mystery vegetable

We bought a lot of plants at garden sale - all edible - but now we can't remember what they are. This one is huge and taking over the little garden plot.

Destinations: Camlann Medieval Village

Visitors to Camlann Village get a lesson in fighting with staves

It's summer in the market town of Camlann and the year is 1376.

Come visit Camlann on a living history day and immerse yourself in the lives of its folk. Wander around the peacefully green village and stop in to talk with the village cook, the potter, the clothier, and the rest of their neighbors about life in the 14th century.

Each has a craft that they can teach you and -- if you show promise! -- will let you try. If you're more adventurous why not taste medieval fare at the Bors Hede Inne, which serves a peasant menu lunch from 12 to 3pm and a more noble dinner (by reservation) after 5pm.

The villagers are all volunteers, and the presentations vary from day to day depending on volunteers' availability. These presentations include: the innkeeper, the inn cook, the litster, the huswife, the potter, the blacksmith, the carpenter, the basket weaver, the weaver, the spinner, the seamster, the games mistress, the midwife / herbwoman, the scribe, the archers, and the chandler.

Open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5 from May through September. Admission: Adult $10, Junior and Seniors $7, Children 15 and under are Free.

Visit the website for more information.

St. James Faire is a regional event, pulling villagers and nobles alike from the surrounding area for knightly combat, villager markets, poppets, minstrelsy, Payne's Magykes (listen for the crowd to chant "Oh no! Not the ram's bladder trick!"), archery demonstrations and dance. July 28 and 29.

The next big festival is Harvest Festival, August 25 and 26.

Find joy on annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour in September

Artist Meredith Arnold
Edmonds Art Studio Tour artists
“Art reminds us that the world is an expansive place with lots of joy in it,” says Edmonds mixed media artist Meredith Arnold.

And there’s no doubt that the world could use a little joy right about now. Fortunately, the annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour is coming soon, with joy and whimsy and grandeur in tow!

Artists in and around Edmonds are busily preparing to open their studio doors for the 13th annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour, to be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16, 2018.

This free, annual, self-guided event, sponsored in part by the Edmonds Arts Festival, provides an exclusive glimpse into 15 private art studios showcasing the work of 30 local artists. The Tour, which Arnold describes as a “mini art safari,” offers patrons an opportunity to meet professional artists, see how they create their work, and purchase pieces directly from the makers. Studios will be open from 10am to 5pm both days.

“You can’t help but come away from each studio with a little more inspiration and wonder as you discover techniques and pieces you’ve never seen before,” said jewelry maker Ellen Chappelle. “By the end of the day, you’re just bursting with creative energy and joy.”

Landscape painter Andy Eccleshall agreed. “It’s a unique opportunity to see how it’s made, in the place where we make it,” he said. “When else do you get the chance?”

Visit the Tour’s mobile-friendly website at EdmondsArtStudioTour.com to preview the participating artists and their work, download a map of participating studios, and find links to each artist’s website.

The Edmonds Art Studio Tour is generously supported by the Edmonds Arts Festival, the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation, the Edmonds Arts Commission, Joyful Art Fund, Lexus of Seattle, and many other valued partners who are listed on the Tour website.

Low tide beach walks at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park

Low tide at RB Saltwater Park

This weekend was one of particularly low tides. Naturalists from the Seattle Aquarium were at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park to answer questions and point out things that people might otherwise miss.

Judging by the photos, many families took advantage of the low tide, and the great joy for the toddlers was digging in the sand and playing with the seaweed.

Low tide brought out a lot of families

Wandering the neighborhood - dancers and soccer players

Soccer game at Ridgecrest Elementary

Seattle Poppy walks the neighborhoods of Ridgecrest, Meridian Park, North City, and photographs the interesting things that she comes across. She has found deserted playgrounds, charming lawn ornaments, little free libraries, water for dogs - and the list goes on.

Friday was a bonus day when she walked by Ridgecrest Elementary in the early evening. She found what might have been a pickup soccer match - or maybe an organized team. The players just looked like they were having fun on a summer night.

From the Ridgecrest playing field she went to the covered playground area and found Spanish dancers whirling and kicking with their full skirts swirling around them.

There are so many things going on all around us. Unless you get out and walk, you'll never know the joy that is nearby (unless Seattle Poppy gets there to take a photo!)

WeatherWatcher: Very warm, then a cool down

Forecast: Sunny skies are expected for the next 7-10 days. We have very warm temperatures for the next couple of days. High temperatures are expected to be between 88°F and 93°F Sunday and Monday. Tuesday we return to the low-mid 80's as we start to cool down. Wednesday through next weekend we will top out in the mid-upper 70's for high temperatures, and lows in the 50's. The official record for Sunday at Sea-Tac is 92°F so we may tie or break that record.

Last week, Thursday we just touched 90°F in Shoreline which makes it our fourth day this year with a high temperature of 90°F or more. Last year by this time we had only touched 90°F once, on June 25, 2017. It's very different from Sea-Tac which has not yet recorded a high temperature exceeding 90°F this year. These temperature differences are very indicative of how localized our weather can be.

Below is the daily high and low temperature graph compared to normal in Shoreline.

Photo: Bridal bouquet

No. I don't know what these flowers are. But they are stunning and don't look quite real. The multi-colored ones look like an artistic craft project, made for a bride to carry.

The leaves and large blossoms look like hydrangeas run amok.

But they are grown locally - Lee swears she took the photo in Richmond Beach.

Consensus from readers: it's a lacecap hydrangea

Laws and Paws - KCSO Foundation takes dogs and books to Kenmore fire station

Laws and Paws
Laws and Paws
Monday
4pm - 7pm
Northshore Fire
in Kenmore

Hosted by King County Sheriff's Office Foundation

Laws and Paws is a program sponsored by the King County Sheriff’s Office Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 organization, whose mission is partnering Sheriff’s Deputies and volunteers with the youth of King County.

Laws and Paws incorporates dogs with an array of projects such as reading programs, canine care and bringing joy through interaction between youth and dogs.

The main goal of these events is to interact with the community beyond the typical “police interaction” and to give the children a fun time with some great dogs.

The target audience is elementary school aged children and their families but all are welcome if they want to read or just say hello to the dogs.

We will make it work with whomever shows up. We often run until at least 5pm so feel free to show up any time before then, no need to show up at exactly 4pm.
The kids can read to the dogs then we try to have a play time where the dogs show off some tricks and chase some balls. We received a few boxes of donated books that the children can read to the dogs and then take home with them.

Stella and Bentley are the two primary pups. They are Bernese Mountain Dogs who have had training in emotional support. Presto is a Labrador who was an early addition and is fantastic with the children. We may have more that we vet for events as the program grows.

Please feel free to e-mail with any questions.
