Shoreline Resident Satisfaction Survey

Every two years, the City conducts a resident satisfaction survey to measure satisfaction with City services and maintenance, public safety, transportation, quality of life, and other areas in Shoreline.

This month, ETC Institute will send surveys to approximately 3,500 households in Shoreline.

We encourage everyone that receives a survey to complete it. Results are reviewed carefully and help to inform decisions around City programs and services.

Approximately two weeks after ETC sends the surveys out they will phone individuals that have not returned the survey and encourage them to either return the survey or complete it over the phone.

Individuals receiving the survey will also have the option of completing the survey online. Only residents who have received the survey via mail will be able to take the survey online. They will verify their address at the end of the survey. This is to ensure the validity of the random sample.

If you have any questions about the survey, contact Communications Program Coordinator Eric Bratton.

Shoreline hiker identified

Pratt Lake
The 31 year old hiker who died in a fall in North Bend on Sunday, June 3, 2018 has been identified as John Steven Needham of Shoreline.

Needham was hiking with a friend in the Pratt Lake area just north of I-90 and west of Snoqualmie Pass at 3:30pm when he fell down a 200 foot cliff.

The friend's dog prevented him from falling. The friend could see Needham's backpack at the bottom of the cliff but not him.

The friend hiked out for a hour before he could get cell service to call for help. King county search and rescue and King county sheriff's officers searched and found Needham's body at midnight.

He had died from multiple blunt force injuries. His death was ruled an accident by the King County Medical Examiner.

Shoreline identifies site for potential community & aquatics center

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

Location of future Shoreline Community and Aquatics Center
on Midvale, near City Hall
Photo from Google

As part of the ongoing effort to look at the potential development of a new community and aquatics center, the City has identified a preferred site for the facility in Town Center.

The City has chosen WRNS Studio to develop site designs and construction cost estimates for a community and aquatics center located at 17828 Midvale Avenue N. This is the current site of Storage Court of Shoreline.

Also included in the site location are eight properties on the west side of Stone Avenue between N 178th and N 180th Streets. The City has notified the property owners of its interest in potentially purchasing the properties. However, it is possible that the final design for the facility will not require the City to purchase all eight properties.

As part of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan adopted last year, the City conducted an Aquatic/Community Feasibility Study to research options for replacing the Shoreline Pool and Spartan Recreation Center. The study analyzed community needs and potential sites for a combined community and aquatic center.

An important part of the feasibility study was an assessment of potential locations for the future facility. The study considered very general locations throughout Shoreline. The preliminary designs and cost estimates prepared as part of the study were based on a generic site of about 4.5 acres in size.

Working with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services / Tree Board and through a community process, the City developed a series of evaluation criteria for assessing location options. The criteria included:
  • central location
  • meets city development goals
  • frequent transit access
  • vehicular accessibility
  • pedestrian/bike access
  • visibility
  • ease of land assembly
  • availability of publicly owned land
Based on these criteria, the City determined the Midvale Avenue location would be the optimal site for a new community and aquatics center. Its adjacency to the Interurban Trail and the Park at Town Center, visibility and proximity to Aurora Avenue, and frequent transit service make it an ideal location.

The location also offers the opportunity to become a signature civic center to anchor future town center development. WRNS Studio, through the proposed scope of work, will prepare designs and cost estimates that take into account the unique characteristics of this site.

King County constructed the Shoreline Pool in 1971 as part of the Forward Thrust Bond program. Based on an assessment of the pool completed in 2013, it is in need of significant health and safety upgrades and other major maintenance to keep it operational.

The Spartan Recreation Center is also showing its age and will require renovations if it is going to continue to meet the recreational needs of our growing and diverse community.

Instead of reinvesting in these two facilities separately, the City believes this is an opportunity to combine the functionality of an aquatic center and a community center in a central location. This will allow the City to provide a better and more efficient experience to Shoreline residents. Given the level of reinvestment being called for at the pool and the future needs of the Spartan Recreation Center, the City believes this is an opportune time to develop a comprehensive, long-range plan for the pool and community center.

Shari Winstead joins the 4Culture Board
On May 29, 2018 the King County Council and Executive Dow Constantine appointed Shari Winstead to the 4Culture Board of Directors.

4Culture, King County’s cultural funding agency supporting arts, heritage, preservation and public art, is proud to welcome Shari Winstead, former Mayor of Shoreline, to this leadership post.

A 15-member Board of Directors is the governing body of 4Culture, with individuals representing the cultural, geographic and ethnic diversity of King County.

Shari served as both Mayor and City Councilmember of Shoreline from 2010 to 2017. Prior to being elected, she served on Shoreline’s Parks, Recreational and Cultural Services Board, including the Public Arts advisory committee.

She is a long-time supporter of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council. She continues to be an active volunteer and is passionate about integrating all forms of art into the community.

Rod Dembowski, King County Councilmember, said “Shari Winstead is the perfect leader to represent District 1 on the 4Culture Board of Directors.
"I worked closely with Shari during her career as a Councilmember and Mayor of Shoreline and always found her to be an effective advocate for the needs of North King County. I am confident she will bring her unique skillset to the Board to represent District 1 and all residents of King County.”

Shari currently works as a project manager at Davis Wright Tremaine, focusing on the firm’s Wellness Program and Employee Charitable Giving campaigns, and is a past board member for Shoreline Breakfast Rotary as well as a number of other community organizations.

46th District Dems meet on the Third Wednesday

The 46th District Democrats have selected a new day for their regular meetings, starting this month.

They have been working for several months on finding a new day and week of the month to hold their regular monthly meeting, to reduce conflicts with evening civic committee meetings in all three of their district cities.

We have found a date with many fewer conflicts – the third Wednesday of each month. So, we move to the third Wednesday starting on June 20th at 7:00pm.

Regular meetings will continue to be at the Mennonite Church Auditorium in Lake City, as that location is comfortable and has good transit options.

The regularly scheduled District Meeting will be Wednesday, June 20th, at 7:00pm, at the Seattle Mennonite Church Auditorium, located at 3120 NE 125th St, in Lake City.

Executive Constantine releases statement on U.S. Supreme Court decision on treaty rights

Salmon
Photo courtesy King County Library System
King County Executive Dow Constantine released the following statement on Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to let stand an appeals court ruling that determined Washington’s culverts and other pipes under state roadways violate fishing treaties with northwest tribes:

"The U.S. Supreme Court sent a strong signal across the nation and here at home in support of tribal treaty rights.
"I commend the Court for taking this case and providing the final word on a decades-long argument. Now, it is time to set aside acrimony and disagreement, and get to work reducing barriers to fish passage. We must do whatever it takes to ensure the survival of our Chinook, kokanee, steelhead, and Coho for future generations.
"Under my direction, King County departments have already been developing a culvert strategy that inventories where county roads, trails, and other infrastructure block access to habitat, and we will work with tribal and state scientists to assess where to fix them, beginning with those that bring the most benefit to salmon."

Garden Gnomes Juniors Softball team earns a spot in the District 8 Championship game

Northwest Seattle / Shoreline Little League Windermere
Rick Nimmer Garden Gnomes Juniors Softball team

UPDATE: The games were rained out on Wednesday and rescheduled for Thursday, June 14

The Northwest Seattle / Shoreline Little League Windermere Rick Nimmer Garden Gnomes Juniors Softball team has earned a spot to play in the District 8 Championship game held at UW Husky Softball Stadium on Wednesday June 13th.

This team is 13-3 on the season. They finished the regular season on a strong note, winning their final regular season game over Ballard/ Magnolia/ Queen Anne Little League team.

In their first game in the D8 Tournament they defeated North Central Little League 7-4 moving on to face Northeast Little League who had a bye in the first round.

The Garden Gnomes got off to a rough start against Northeast Little League, giving up 4 runs in the first inning and not being able to fight their way back, losing 6-1. With this loss they now had to play in the losers bracket of the double elimination tournament.

Facing a tough task ahead, the Gnomes would need to win 3 games in a row to make it to the Championship. The Gnomes' next opponent would be Ballard/ Magnolia/ Queen Anne Little League with the Gnomes getting the win and their starting pitcher threw a no hitter.

The Garden Gnomes would then move on to face North Central Little League in an elimination game. This was a well played game all around with great pitching, defense, and hitting, allowing the Gnomes to get the win and stay alive in the tournament.

This earned the Gnomes a spot in the Semifinal match up against North Bothell Little League, played at Shorewood High School. The NW/Shoreline Garden Gnomes got off to an amazing start with 6 runs in the first inning and never letting up and winning the game in 4 innings and earning a spot in the District 8 Championship game at UW Husky Stadium.

The Garden Gnomes are no strangers to tournament play and success. This team went undefeated in the 2017 Majors Softball D8 Tournament, winning the District 8 City Championship over Northeast Little League, and losing to Woodinville in the District 8 Championship at UW Husky Softball Stadium.

In 2015 while playing in the Minor Softball Division they had similar success going undefeated in tournament play, losing to North Central Little League in the City Championship game at UW Husky Softball Stadium.

This will be the Garden Gnomes' third visit to the Championship game at UW Husky Softball Stadium in the past four seasons. They have had an incredible run of success which has created some great rivalries amongst other D8 opponents.

Most notably Northeast Seattle Little League who they were able to beat in both semifinal games in 2015 and 2017 keeping them from making it to Husky Stadium.

The Championship game in 2018 will be loaded with excitement, pitting the Northwest Seattle/ Shoreline Juniors Softball Garden Gnomes against the Northeast Junior Softball Little League squad.

These teams know each other well, splitting the regular season series, and losing to them in game 2 of the 2018 tournament. This will be a hard fought game and the winner will more than likely be the team that makes the fewest mistakes.

The Northwest/Shoreline Little League Garden Gnome Team is Managed by Rick Nimmer, and coached by Stephanie Saunders, Ashley Swan, and Kari Fera.

The team is sponsored by Windermere Real Estate Rick Nimmer Broker

The Garden Gnomes would like to thank Tracy Lemke, President Of Northwest Little League, Dean Barth, President Of Shoreline Little League, Mickey Telling, Vice President of Softball Shoreline Little League, and all of the great families and fans for their support in the 2018 season.

District 8 Little League is made up of teams from Ballard, Magnolia, Queen Anne, Roosevelt, University District, Greenlake, North Central Seattle, Northeast Seattle, Northwest Seattle, Shoreline, North Bothell, North Lake, Northshore, and Woodinville.

The Little League Juniors Softball Division is made up of players 13 and 14 years of age with most in 7th and 8th grades.

Many of these players will be starting High School next year and will attend Shorewood, Shorecrest, Ingraham, and Nathan Hale.

The District 8 Little League Juniors Softball Championship will be played at UW Husky Softball Stadium Wednesday June 13, 2018 at 7:30pm. This event is free to the general public.

In the Age of Trump: LFP resident profiled in Seattle Magazine

Environmental activist Raelene Gold was profiled in the June 2018 edition of Seattle Magazine for her role in suing the President of the United States.

Most recently, as a member of Great Old Broads for Wilderness, the retired psychiatrist and Lake Forest Park resident has supported that organization’s effort to sue the president of the United States.
At the end of last year, the Great Old Broads joined nine other environmental organizations and filed a lawsuit against the current administration, citing what they believe was an unconstitutional decision to eliminate some of our national monuments.

Poem - Photo - When It's Raining

Rain
Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

When It's Raining by Rob Oxford

The world’s a different place when it’s raining
Can you tell from outer space that it’s raining?
Sometimes a race is "called" because it’s raining
But some games can still be played when it’s raining
(Like Checkers and Chess)

Worms will stick their necks out when it's raining
But then birds have them for lunch when it's raining
Puddles can be jumped in when it's raining
That’s why Moms get a bit cross when it's raining

Squirrels will run across your yard when it's raining
But have trouble dodging cars when it’s raining
You can stay dry but it's hard when it's raining
It just depends on where you are when it’s raining

The rain makes funny sounds when it's raining
It kind of ricochets off the ground when it’s raining
For 40 Days and 40 Nights it kept on raining
But in the rain, Marines still train when it’s raining

My Dad said the fish like to bite when it’s raining
But when they don’t, let me tell you it gets boring
It’s hard to fly a kite when it’s raining
Because you can’t look up into the sky when it’s raining

There are big drops, there are small drops
And a rainbow when the rain stops
But I like the rain

And I like what it brings
Because I know that it brings

New life to things
