Work on I-5 this weekend promises to delay northbound Seattle traffic

Revive I-5 work is back in Seattle this weekend, but people throughout the region will need to plan for delays on major highways and city streets Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, primarily for northbound traffic.

In addition to northbound I-5, people using I-405, I-90 and state routes 99, 509 and 599 will see heavier traffic as travelers avoid the region’s main interstate.

The express lanes will be open in the northbound direction all weekend, which will create backups on southbound I-5 as well.

These closures will allow contractor crews to replace concrete and the left half of nine expansion joints. Our maintenance crews will also repair aging concrete on the Ship Canal Bridge.

From 3am to noon Saturday and 3 to 10am Sunday Northbound I-5 will remain two lanes between SR 520 and NE 45th/50th Streets.

WSDOT said they saw long backups on northbound I-5 last weekend (see video), and it took drivers at least a half hour to get through the closure area.

"We hope that if enough people stay away from northbound I-5 – by either taking alternate routes or limiting discretionary travel – we can keep the backups to a minimum."

Even when 50% of vehicles don’t use northbound I-5, all of that traffic has to go somewhere else. So that means that you should expect delays not only on the major highways in the area, but also on Seattle surface streets.

Einstein student is nationally ranked Freeskiier

Lillian at Snowbird in Utah April 2018

13 year old Einstein 8th grader Lillian Nimmer competed again this spring (see previous article) in the IFSA North American Championships held at Snowbird in Utah April 11 - 15, 2018. IFSA is the International Freeskiiers and Snowboarders Association.

Lillian started the season in January 2018 competing at Red Mountain in Canada at the Canadian Open Freeride Championships. She had finished 2nd there in 2017 and hoped to improve on that, but she dropped off a cliff in the lower venue, landed and fell, so she missed the cut and did not make the finals.

In February she skied at Stevens Pass in the Jim Jack "Cow Boy Up', finishing 1st. She then she skied in the IFSA Crystal Mountain Regional again finishing 1st.

After that she competed in the IFSA Crystal Mountain National. Her qualifying run was one of the best of the day, but she did not come to a controlled stop in the finish corral and missed the finals.

In March she visited Mount Baker for the IFSA Mount Baker Regional and finished 5th. The following weekend she competed in the Whister/Blackcomb Freeride Challenge, an IFSA Junior National event. She finished on the podium in 4th.

She finished the regular season on a strong note, taking 1st place in the Alpental Freeride Open on March 24, 2018.

Lillian finished the 2018 IFSA regular season with 2175 points out of a possible 3000 points. She is ranked #1 in the IFSA Pacific Northwest region which includes Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

At the NorAms (North American Championships) she competed against the top 20 athletes in North America in the 12-14 year old Female Ski category.

Lillian had a good qualifying run, finishing in 10th, only about a point from 1st place. She was in a good position to move up in the finals, but the finals were canceled due to unsafe conditions. Lillian finished the season with 2740 total points and is ranked #12 in North America and #8 in the U.S.

She still has one more season of competition in the 12-14 female ski category and she hopes to move up in the rankings next season. Over the summer she plans to train at Whistler, Mt. Hood, and has an opportunity to ski in Argentina.

She skies for Northwest Freeride and her home mountain is Alpental at Snoqualmie Pass.

Wayne Grevey is the director and head coach at Northwest Freeride, and Corey Nugent was her coach at Snowbird for the IFSA North American Championships. She is sponsored by Seattle Ski in Shoreline, Brian McQueen, owner.

She is the daughter of Rick and Leslie Nimmer of Shoreline.

Accolades accumulate for Shorewood auto shop teacher

Wesley Proudlove, Shoreline School District
Secondary Educator of the Year

By Luanne Brown

Wesley Proudlove has been the Auto Shop and Robotics Teacher at Shorewood High School for the past 11 years. First impressions are of a man with a mission. Always on the move (he clocks in over 35,000 steps most days), he walks with purpose and that purpose is to empower every one of his students to do their best.

He holds the same standards for himself, as evidenced by the accolades he’s recently received. Not only was he named the Shoreline School District’s Secondary Educator of the Year, he received the Shorewood PTSA Outstanding Teacher of the Year designation as well as a similar award from the Paul Allen School of Computer Science at the University of Washington.

Thanks to smart investing, Proudlove, who is originally from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was able to retire from a career in the car industry in his early 40’s. After three years of retirement, he volunteered to help keep the automotive shop at Shorewood open until they found a teacher who could take over from him. The rest, as they say — is history.

If you haven’t guessed by now, Proudlove is not your standard teacher. But then he’s not teaching a standard class either. “I teach creative thinking and problem solving. I tell students, ‘I don’t want you to be an auto mechanic. I want you to be a problem solver.’”

The only time he shows his students how to do something is when he takes what he’s done apart and makes them redo it themselves.

One of Proudlove’s greatest joys is to see ‘a light go off’ in a student’s head.

“When a student knows something from physics and chemistry and puts it together on their own in my class — it’s a win.”

“Mr. Proudlove has a rare gift for teaching ‘hands on’ skills in the auto shop and in the robotics program.
"Once students have seen a demonstration, he’s a master at empowering them to succeed independently and solve problems without teacher intervention.
"Through questioning and coaching in this process, students build skills and knowledge very quickly,” said Bill Dunbar, the Principal at Shorewood High School.

Teaching kids to be independent and creative thinkers and teaching them to be ‘doers’ is important to Proudlove. “For both my auto shop class and our robotics program — the kids do everything. “We function as Grade 15. We have our own language and do things that other students can’t do,” Proudlove said.

Proudlove encouraged Carly Krantz, 17, a senior, to start a robotics team for girls. “He gives down-to-earth advice,” Krantz said. “He also does a lot for his students, like coming in on Saturday. He really puts forth a lot of effort for us and wants everything we do to be student run.”

Shawn Laris, 18, a senior who plans on going to culinary school, said, “Proudlove connects with every student — even those who aren’t motivated. He respects and trusts us. This gives us the confidence we need to reach our goals. As graduation approaches, I’m happy to be able to call Proudlove not just a teacher but a mentor, role model, and most of all friend.”

Proudlove is proud of his students' achievements

In addition to all that he does during the school day, Proudlove also helps with an after-school robotics team.

“Over the years, many, many students have expressed that Mr. Proudlove’s classes have caused them to fall in love with STEM learning, science and engineering,” Principal Dunbar said.

Proudlove’s dream is to make the Shoreline School District into a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) hub and is working with the district, corporations, and other schools to make this dream come true.

Proudlove has former students who have gone on to be Fulbright International Scholars, have built cars and robots for Tesla Motors, raced rally cars internationally, and built race cars for multi-million-dollar teams.

“But the students I am most proud of are the ones who are proud to come in and announce that they bought a home or have entered a trade or just are happy and looking forward to the future.”

Proudlove said, “The award from Shoreline school district is really unexpected. I focus so much on my students that I really had no idea what a big thing this is. I have been getting congrats from all sorts of people in the district and beyond. Even my barista!”

Post Office still looking for a permanent site in Shoreline

Retail services at Gateway Plaza 185th / Midvale

The U.S. Postal Service has made no progress in finding a site to consolidate its services in Shoreline.

"Nothing new to report, according to our Facilities Office. They would still like to find a suitable, single site where we could have the carriers and the retail in one convenient location. Failing that, we may look into extending the leases on the two locations we are currently using."

The retail services are at Gateway Plaza at 185th and Aurora / Midvale in Shoreline. The processing center is in the old Office Depot building at Gateway Place in Mountlake Terrace. The vans are parked on City of Shoreline property at the old Brightwater portal on Ballinger.

The North City post office was demolished after the land was sold to a developer.

Shorecrest wins WESCO 3A District Title

Robert Mann, Anna Burke, Bella Saunders, Kate Ivens, Sophie Ivens

By Rob Mann

Wednesday, May 16, 2018 was the second day of the Tennis District Tournament at Arlington HS.

Wednesday was a battle where everyone came ready to play. All the Shorecrest girls played in tight matches and fought for every point.

Bella Saunders and Sophies Ivens (SC) were rolling in the first set, completely dominating Tessa Rugg and Katri Shields from Snohomish in the finals.

Snohomish made some adjustments in the second set and turned the tables on Shorecrest. The deciding third set went the distance. Sophie and Bella had two match points on their serve, but Snohomish found a way to stay in it. Shorecrest had a third match point when Snohomish was serving, but Tessa from Snohomish found a way to serve two of her best serves in the entire match to take the third set to a tie-breaker.

WesCo 3A doubles champions

Sophie and Bella decided enough was enough and won 7 straight points in the tie-breaker to become the WesCo 3A doubles champions. Final Score Shorecrest defeated Snohomish 6-2, 2-6. 7-6 (7-0).

Kate Ivens in front of singles bracket
2nd place in singles

Kate Ivens (SC) did an amazing job digging deep and hitting numerous balls with laser-like precision and out of this world pace. Her adversary Catherine Michelutti from Squalicum stayed calm and exercised lots of patience in the finals match. Catherine watched Kate hit many glorious winners past her.

Catherine came off the court and stated "that was a really tough match", which is a huge compliment because she had sailed through all of her other matches in the tournament. Unfortunately, Catherine defeated Kate 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, but 2nd place is awesome considering that Kate is only a freshman.

Anna Burke slicing a backhard
Anna Burke (SC) had to play Olivia Olson from Edmonds-Wooday in the consolation bracket. Four girls were fighting for the one remaining spot to State. This was a must win for Anna. She came out strong in the first set, but had some unlucky breaks towards the end and dropped the first set.

She regained her composure in the 2nd set and beat Olivia by hitting driving passing shots and slicing. These two ended up in a third set and sadly things didn't go Anna's way. Olivia defeated Anna 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Anna's win on the first day did help Shorecrest to secure the District Tournament Team Title.

Bella, Sophie, and Kate will continue on to the State Tournament next week on May 25th and May 26th in Kennewick at the Tri-City Court Club and Kamiakin High School.

Also, Faiz Khan, Reed Tangeman, and Ben Silber from Shorecrest, who qualified in the fall, will be going to State as well.

Ashley Aversano wants to be a teacher in order to lead others to those “aha moments” that we all understand! As you will see by what she has done in her life, she has already had many opportunities to have those herself and to share some with others.

A member of the National Honor Society, Ashley has earned her high GPA while taking such classes as Spanish, Honors Chemistry, Physics, and UW Pre Calculus as well as Child Psychology, where she discovered her love for teaching in a special needs preschool classroom.

In her spare time, Ashley played high school volleyball for four years and club volleyball for two. She has also worked in retail the past couple of years and is now training to be a manager at Plato’s Closet in Lynnwood.

Ashley Aversano will be graduating from Shorecrest High School this spring. She plans to attend Western Washington University and become a math teacher.

Mother's Day opening for LFP Farmers Market was sunny and lively

Photos by Jerry Pickard
Text by Diane Hettrick

Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opened on a sunny summer-like day.

Usually opening days are cool and damp but this year's opening was sunny and 83 degrees. The market was crowded with shoppers, but you could still get around to see everything. There was a little something for everyone.

You could get mom flowers - and a bottle of local wine

Cottage Jams makes jam, jelly, and syrups with low sugar content. Delicious and affordable, they make great gifts. I once bought several boxes of jelly and gave it as Christmas presents to my impossible to buy for extended family.

In the past few years, the market has added ready to eat food, so it's a great place to go for lunch. Good food and great people watching. Bringing your own pizza oven is a new one.

The alpacas are always incredibly popular. These guys are lying down on the job.

The market nearly always has buskers, sometimes two. But a juggler / acrobat is a new attraction.

For a modest fee, this man will write you a poem.

When you buy truly fresh produce, it will last in your refrigerator for several weeks. Further, all the produce vendors at the LFP market are either certified organic or in the 4-5 year process of becoming certified. Fresh produce you can trust.

All in all, the Sunday Farmers' Market at Lake Forest Park Town Center (intersection of Ballinger and Bothell Way, 10am to 3pm) is a wonderful experience. It is small enough that you can see everything and it's not overwhelming. There's food ready to eat and places to sit and eat it. There's quirky and interesting entertainment. And there's vegetable and fruit shopping and bouquets of flowers for the table.

It's a perfect Sunday experience. Go. Tell them I sent you.

Enrollment ends May 31 for Washington's prepaid tuition program

The GET program’s 2017-18 enrollment period closes on May 31. As the state’s 529 prepaid tuition program, GET provides Washington families an opportunity to start saving for future college costs while their children are young.

The Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program opened in 1998, and since then, thousands of Washington families have saved billions of dollars to go towards their students’ future higher education expenses. To date, GET has distributed over $1 billion to more than 52,000 students who have used their GET accounts to attend college in all 50 states and 15 foreign countries.

As a 529 prepaid tuition program, the State of Washington guarantees that a family’s GET savings will keep pace with in-state tuition and state-mandated fees. While GET account values keep pace with in-state tuition, beneficiaries have the freedom to follow their ambitions wherever they choose, as GET can be used at nearly any public or private university, community college, or technical school in the country.

“The key to a successful college savings strategy is to start when your kids are young, set realistic goals, and get the whole family involved,” says GET program director, Betty Lochner. “We like to remind families to save what they can, when they can, because even small amounts can add up over time.”

GET's website offers details, charts, planning tools and answers for questions that families may have about the program. Interested families can open accounts online without an enrollment fee, and the GET Contact Center staff is ready to help at 800-955-2318 or GETInfo@wsac.wa.gov.

The Washington Student Achievement Council administers the GET Program while the Washington State Investment Board oversees its investments. The Committee on Advanced Tuition Payment and College Savings, commonly referred to as the GET Committee, governs the program. Washington’s Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program is our state’s 529 prepaid tuition plan, providing a safe and secure way to help families save for college. The program offers a guarantee backed by state law, tax benefits, flexible payments and a nationwide choice of colleges.

LWVUS will announce the winner at the organization’s upcoming National Convention in Chicago on June 30th. The award category honors the grassroots efforts of LWV of Snohomish County to protect voting rights and increase voter registration and turnout.

The nomination focused on the Snohomish County League’s multi-faceted effort to “Spread the Vote” by partnering with local organizations and institutions to register eligible voters at the high schools, Community Colleges, various marches, markets and underserved areas of the County.

Their monthly KSER radio program spotlighted key issues, people and candidates. Their partnership with Everett Districts Now for a public vote to change the City Charter for a District form of Council brought voter registration directly to the neighborhoods of the City of Everett. Finally, their campaign to promote Civil Discourse and other educational forums extended opportunities for voter registration.

“It is a great honor to be selected as a finalist for this award. The Snohomish County League has spent a great deal of time focused on voter education and registration,” said Pat Fogarty-Cramer, current President of the local League.
“Projects like this help to ensure that all eligible voters have the tools they need to cast their ballot and participate in our elections.”

“As defenders of democracy, the League of Women Voters is always vigilant against attacks on voting rights,” said Chris Carson, president of the League of Women Voters of the United States.

“Our volunteers spearhead efforts to protect and inform our electorate. It is an honor to recognize such dedication to our greatest civic duty.”

Members of the local leadership team will attend the National Convention in Chicago, IL.

The League of Women Voters envisions a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate. We believe in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy.
