It was barely light when the Richmond Beach Running Club converged on the Five Corners Caffe Ladro in Edmonds in a heavy Saturday morning drizzle to kick off a hands-down creative charity event in which runners literally give the shirts off their backs to benefit homeless youth.

They regularly meet up to celebrate their shared joy of cruising through neighborhoods and parks, along beaches, trails and city streets, filling their lungs with air, feeling their heart rates rise, and being soothed by the rhythm of their breathing and footfalls.
But as the metabolism rises and the body warms up, clothing that felt just right at the beginning of a run can become hot and burdensome, and runners often find themselves shedding clothing mid-run and tying it around their waists, stuffing it in backpacks, or even abandoning it by the side of the road.

And so the Stripper Run was born.

Along the route, volunteers posted at pre-designated collection points waited with bags and boxes to pick up the items “shed” by the runners.

Bank robber arrested in Lake Forest Park after robbing Kenmore bank
![]() |
| Key Bank in Kenmore |
Shortly after 12:30pm on January 6th, a 51 year old man walked into the Key Bank in the 7800 block of NE Bothell Way in Kenmore and presented a note to the teller indicating he had a weapon and demanding money.
The frightened teller complied and gave the man a bag containing an unknown amount of money.
Shortly after 1pm, Deputies from Kenmore and Shoreline PD were able to locate the suspect with the bag and money in the 4000 blk of NE 197th in Lake Forest Park.
The suspect was arrested without incident and positively identified by bank employees.
Detectives from the King County Sheriff's Office will be working with the FBI on the follow-up for this investigation to determine if the man is responsible for any other bank robberies.
The man was booked in the King County jail for investigation of robbery.
Both Kenmore PD and Shoreline PD contract for police services with the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Only one Civilian Medal of Honor is given nationally each year and is for people who place Civilian Service before Self. Earlier, he was the artist for the Washington Huskies and for the Seattle Seahawks.
While the full impact of his work cannot be presented in the allotted time, all veterans and interested members of the community are welcome to come to hear him present a snippet of his work.

Sears to close Shoreline store
![]() |
| The Aurora store opened in 1967 Photo courtesy City of Shoreline |
In the fall, Sears closed all of its Canadian stores.
It had been a staple of malls and of small towns in Canada, often the only department store and the biggest employer within miles.
Now the troubled retailer is closing 103 stores in the United States - both Sears and KMart.
The company on Thursday, January 4 informed associates at 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores that we will be closing these stores between early March and early April 2018.
The Shoreline store in Aurora Square is one of those stores.
Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.
Customers can use the store locator function on our websites to find the location of their nearest Kmart and Sears stores.
The company has closed over 400 locations in the past year.
We will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.
The Aurora store is expected to close by April. Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12.

Big Brother art installation reduced to single daily showing
![]() |
| Big Brother at Shoreview Park Photo by David Francis |
Outdoor art installations that run on solar power are at the mercy of the winter skies in Shoreline, so the Big Brother exhibit at Shoreview Park has been reduced to one showing a day.
Shoreline Public Art coordinator David Francis says that they have reduced the daily showing to just 4:30-4:45 (no screenings at 5:09, 5:30, or 6:00) so that the battery will have the best chance to benefit from any sunlight.
However, you had best see it this week.
"Even if there is no re-charge from sunlight, the battery should last another week", said Francis. "No guarantees after January 12 and if it is not showing at 4:30pm after that time we will probably dismantle for the winter and try again in spring / summer."
See previous article about the installation. Shoreview Park, 700 NW Innis Arden Way, 98177

Retail and public functions are in Gateway Plaza at N 185th and Aurora (Midvale). All post office boxes are there as well as counter services. A blue box mail drop is a couple of doors down.
Parking is challenging at Gateway, which has popular restaurants, BECU, a cosmetology school, Starbucks and Bartells.

With a busy post office, driving and parking on site will be even more challenging.

They took him to Northwest Hospital, near Northgate. The hospital called Seattle Police, who determined that he was the missing person from Shoreline and contacted Shoreline police.
It is unknown exactly where he was found or why he was taken to the hospital. He did not have any injuries and appeared to be in good condition.
Manion has limited communication ability, so it is unknown where he spent the night Tuesday and Wednesday.
When he was reported missing, King County Search and Rescue mobilized 30 people to look for him.
He is now safely back with his family.
A spokesperson for the family said "Dave is back at home. His family sends deep appreciation to the law enforcement, search and rescue and volunteers that helped in his search."

All Home announces departure of Director Mark Putnam
![]() |
| Mark Putnam |
As director of All Home, Putnam provided leadership to a broad coalition of government, business, faith communities, nonprofits, and homeless advocates working together to develop and implement strategies to address homelessness for adults, youth and families across the region.
“Mark Putnam was instrumental in bringing the community together and refocusing the region’s outcomes and strategies around the goals of making homelessness rare, brief and one-time and the data shows we have made measurable progress in all three areas as a result of his leadership,” said Adrienne Quinn, director of the King County Department of Community and Human Services.
“His work has helped countless individuals and families across King County who have been able to exit homelessness and re-stabilize their lives and futures.”
Putnam became the director of All Home in December of 2013. Over the past four years, the region has seen an increase in the number of homeless people becoming housed by nearly 75%. Under his leadership, a new four-year strategic plan was developed and implemented.
Putnam will stay on to oversee the Count Us In point-in-time homeless count occurring on January 26, 2018. Kira Zylstra, current assistant director, will become Acting Director of All Home.

Politics: Ryu hopes to avoid another special legislative session
![]() |
| State Rep. Cindy Ryu |
Democratic State Rep. Cindy Ryu says she hopes legislators can get through their scheduled 60-day 2018 session that begins Monday, with no special sessions to complete their work, including passing a capital budget, a supplemental budget and other bills, in a timely manner.
The legislature passes a biennial operating budget during a 105-day session in odd-numbered years and tweaks that with a supplemental budget based on updated information during a 60-day session in even-numbered years.
In 2017, legislators were unable to pass an operating budget during their scheduled 105-day session, and went into a third 30-day special session before reaching a compromise between the Democratic-controlled State House of Representatives and the then-Republican-controlled State Senate.
Legislators never did reach an accord on a capital budget, which would pay for state buildings and other projects built using the state’s bonding authority.
In the 2018 legislature, Democrats will control both the House and the Senate. The Democrats took control of the Senate when a Democratic victory in a November special election gave them a 25-24 majority.
Ryu chairs the House committee on community development, housing and tribal affairs. She said in early December that she has asked House members who are thinking of introducing bills that might be referred to her committee, to introduce their bills early so she can schedule their hearings the first two weeks of the session.
Ryu represents the 32nd Legislative District, including the city of Shoreline, part of northwest Seattle, Woodway and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, south Edmonds, the city of Lynnwood and part of Mountlake Terrace.
In addition to being chair of the committee on community development, housing and tribal affairs, Ryu is a member of the Capital Budget Committee and the committee on commerce and gaining.

Missing dogs reunited with family
![]() |
| Foxy and Sissy are back at home |
I am happy to report that the two little dogs, Foxy and Sissy, were reunited with their owner today. (See previous story).
I don't usually publish missing pet stories. Dogs are usually found right away. Cats either come back on their own or are never found.
This seemed different. The dogs were frightened by the fireworks on New Year's Eve.
I was assured that the owner and her family had contacted every group and followed every suggestion for finding lost pets.
These dogs were special for another reason. According to the owner's son, one of them had belonged to his grandfather. The other was his grandmother's dog - and his grandmother had died just a few months ago.
I was finished with the day's edition, but I added the story and asked readers to contact our Tips email.
The next day, I received an email from a reader who volunteers at PAWS in North Lynnwood. PAWS is the animal shelter for both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
She said she had been there on Tuesday and thought she saw the dogs. Further, she said that PAWS only keeps strays for three days before they are put up for adoption - and this was the third day.
PAWS was closed for adoptions on Wednesday but open for owners looking for lost pets.
I sent the phone number - the owner called and got voicemail. I sent the address, Wednesday hours, maps, driving directions, and urged an immediate trip to PAWS.
PAWS has a contact form on their website. I included all the information I had. Linked to the published story. Attached the photo of the dogs.
Within an hour, I had a response, telling me they had made contact with the owner.
This afternoon, the owner's son told me that those were their dogs and they were safe and well at home.
Whew!

They live in the area of N 160th and Wallingford but could be as far as ten blocks away in any director. Panicked animals just run until they are exhausted. They are so disoriented they don't know where they are or how to get home.
Their owner is not on Facebook and doesn't do a lot of technology, so if you have the dogs, saw them, or know anything helpful, contact us at Tips@ShorelineAreaNews.com and we'll get the information to the owner.

Christmas Lights: N 151st

Fremont Ave N and N 151st.
I don't think we are anywhere near the 12th Day of Christmas. I never could make the count come out right. It should finish on Epiphany, on January 6, but I'm always off by a day.
I always loved the medieval concept of 12 days of Christmas, but considering the anxiety I have for one day, I'd be a wreck if I had to come up with 12 gifts for everyone in the castle.

"January series" to be broadcast at local church
![]() |
| Shoreline Christian School |
“Each year I purposely pull together a lineup that is eclectic so that there is a wide variety of timely topics on the series,” said Kristi Potter, director of the January Series.
“But this year as I reflected on what was happening in the news and what conversations would be good to have on the series in 2018, I felt a strong need to bring positive and encouraging stories. So as always, we will hear from speakers on a number of difficult topics like poverty, racism, pollution, restorative justice and dementia, but we will also hear stories of how we can make a difference in the world with our influence, our power, our money or even our mindset.”
The experts will offer informed perspectives on a wide range of today’s most relevant topics, including race in America, technology and national security, biowaste and global poverty, among many others. A full list of speakers and topics here .
The January Series lectures will be video streamed live at First Christian Reformed Church and Shoreline Christian School (14555 25th Avenue NE, Shoreline 98155) from 9:30 to 10:30am Monday through Friday.
