Net Neutrality demonstration at Aurora Village

Protesters gathered on the sidewalk by Verizon in Aurora Village on Thursday, to protest the Federal Communication Commission's proposal to abolish "Net Neutrality" which gives every content provider equal access to internet users.

Under proposed rules, huge companies would be able to sell access and slow down content for those who don't pay.

Costco called the police to complain about the protesters.

However, Shoreline Police determined that the protesters were on the sidewalk, not trespassing, and simply exercising their rights of free speech.

City and Town Center owner both reaching out to LFP citizens

After a contentious beginning to the process of redeveloping the Town Center subarea and siting a parking garage to serve Sound Transit Bus Rapid Transit, the City of Lake Forest Park has recently hired new consultants, Otak and 3 Square Blocks.

We have made important changes in the way we’re approaching the Town Center, including narrowing the project’s geographic scope and putting a greater emphasis on public engagement.
The schedule has also changed. Between now and the end of the year, 3 Square Blocks will be updating the website and starting a broad outreach process to solicit opinions on the future of Town Center from a wide cross-section of Lake Forest Park residents and businesses.
In early 2018, the visioning and planning team will continue this outreach in a variety of forms, including small group discussions and social media outreach to engage residents in developing concepts and design ideas for the Town Center.

In the meantime, Merlone Geier, the owner of Town Center, is ready to hear from the public.

Merlone Geier just launched a community website to address questions from and provide updates to residents, and serve as an overall resource for the neighborhood.

Notably, the website includes a survey for community members to share their opinions about the Town Center – what they currently enjoy and what they’d like to see improved.

Merlone Geier has been sourcing this type of information directly from residents and key stakeholders over the past several months, and wants to continue hearing from the community!

Merlone Geier Partners is a West Coast real estate company that owns and manages a variety of grocery and drug store-anchored retail properties, with 33 properties in the Puget Sound Region. In addition to providing leasing and property management services, Merlone Geier has also worked with communities in creating vibrant, mixed-used spaces for everyone to enjoy. In 2014, we purchased the Town Center at Lake Forest Park and our goal as owners is to ensure the Town Center remains the heart of the community – now and for future generations to come.

Shoreline Mayor publishes op-ed in Seattle Times

Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts has an op-ed in Monday's Seattle Times, December 4, 2017.

Anti-LGBTQ religious exemptions are discrimination
Earlier this year, the Shoreline City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring the city an inviting, equitable and safe community for all. We took a stand upholding the rights of all individuals to be treated fairly and to live their lives with dignity and respect, and free from discrimination. We saw cities across the region adopt similar resolutions, because cities are committed to ensuring equal access to public accommodations for all people.
However, new legal developments may make it harder to protect the rights of all of our residents. On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could roll back protections for Washingtonians, open the door to legalized discrimination and prevent cities from enforcing nondiscrimination laws.

Shoreline builder named 2018 Board President of Master Builders Association

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

Board President Mike Walsh of Terrene Homes passing the gavel to
Erich Armbrusher, of Ashworth Homes, our 2018 Board President.

Inside the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Bellevue Tuesday evening, the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties’ (MBAKS) installed Erich Armbruster of Ashworth Homes as the 2018 MBAKS president and board of directors chair. Armbruster’s term begins January 1, 2018.

Armbruster, president of Ashworth Homes in Shoreline, understands the importance of building a variety of housing structures using sustainable components to help meet the needs of a growing population and address environmental issues affecting the Puget Sound Region. Armbruster is a licensed civil engineer with a passion for building and has more than 15 years of experience with 200 residential and commercial projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.

“Building a sound future for families in the Puget Sound area is important, and I look forward to working alongside the Master Builders Association’s team to execute the 10-point legislative plan and continue to grow the Built Green program in 2018,” says Armbruster.

In October, MBAKS unveiled a comprehensive 10-point plan to address attainable housing solutions in the region. Since 1999, the Built Green program, a nonprofit residential building program of MBAKS, promotes eco-friendly home building methods for area housing. Last year, 58% of new single-family homes built in the City of Seattle were certified Built Green.

Armbruster continues, “Building homes is crucial to meet the growing need and alleviate the housing crisis we are experiencing currently. However, it is as important to build environmentally friendly and resource-efficient housing that provides homeowners healthy, quality living while also protecting the environment.”

Poem: The Very Best Thing About Christmas

Shutterstock image

The Very Best Thing About Christmas
By Cynthia Sheridan

The thing about Christmas, the thing I love most
It isn’t the stuffing, the turkey or roast
It’s not Christmas cookies, although I agree
Such seasonal sweets are a reason for glee
It could be the music, with carolers singing
Shiny brass trumpets, and silver bells ringing

Of course there are presents- exciting to open
Especially the one that is what you were hopin’

I love all the cards that show up in the mail
Year after year, they come without fail

Not to mention the lights! How they twinkle and glow
On storefronts and rooftops, wherever you go

But the thing about Christmas (and here my poem ends)
Yes, the very best thing … is to share it with friends.

SCC Chamber Chorale and Shoreline Singers in free concert Thursday

Shoreline Community College presents:
Chamber Chorale and Shoreline Singers
featuring Jeff Kashiwa

The concert is titled “Sing To Me”

Thursday, December 7, 2017
Doors open at 7pm
First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach

No admittance fee, but donations are graciously accepted.

By Evan Norberg, SCC Director of Choirs

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this Fall session concert of Shoreline Community College’s two choral ensembles. The evening's program will feature Chamber Chorale, Shoreline Singers, and wonderful saxophonist, Jeff Kashiwa.

The program stemmed from a single piece, Ola Gjielo’s, Evening Prayer. A beautiful flurry of chords, melody, and beauty all tied together with tenor sax. When I first presented the idea to Jeff, he whole-heartedly agreed and proceeded to blow us all away with his world-renowned musicianship. This inspired a program that featured him on more than just the one tune. Jeff continued to astound us with his professionalism and musicality striking the statement: “If only I had that much emotion in my little pinky!”

Furthermore, it was my plan all along to test Jeff to the limit; to challenge his ability to jump between instruments. (Actually, this is just how it worked out but are you in for a treat!) Jeff moves seamlessly between Soprano Sax, Tenor, and Clarinet. His ability to transpose on sight is impressive to say the least and we are honored and privileged to have him not only playing for us tonight, but on the regular faculty here at SCC.

We welcome Northwest composer John Muehleisen to our program. John has composed for all types of ensembles and set ups and is most recently honored with premiers across the nation for his work on Pietá, a 90-minute oratorio about compassion and mercy, and But Who Will Return Us Our Children? – A Kipling Passion, a moving compilation of letters, prose and poetry that explores the costs of war from the view of families left behind surrounding the devastated Kiplings and how they find peace in the wake of their son John’s death in the First World War.

Muehleisen is also well known for his humorous contributions to choral music. With Eat Your Vegetables: I. Bounty, we had the pleasure of meeting with John directly and hearing the stories that unravel this peculiar piece.

Programing music from living composers has been an amazing experience for these students, and learning from the masters will continue to inspire us to greatness. A special thanks to Jeff and John in working closely with little-old us!

Another project that we have started for the year makes its appearance at the end of the program. Both choirs will join that of Edmonds Community College and Edmonds-Woodway High School for an evening in the Spring singing the entire major work of Vivaldi’s Gloria. Tonight, we sing four movements in preparation for the spring and have had a blast preparing the music and the nuance if this exciting work.

I truly hope you will enjoy our featured artist and allow the students to take you on an emotional journey. The repertoire has proven challenging but has truly provided us a means to connect with one another, and with you!

Please come in, sit back, relax, and enjoy our program: Sing to Me!

This Sunday, December 10th is your last chance in 2017 to shop the bounty of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market and the ever-popular Holiday Crafts Fair!

The special December farmers market will feature many of your favorite regular season vendors and plenty of options for yummy, fresh, and locally grown and raised produce, meats, fish, and more. Come visit all your old, farming friends and make some new market discoveries as well. You’re sure to leave with lots of delicious goodies for your upcoming holiday meals.

Need a few, final stocking stuffers? Need eight nights of fabulous Hanukkah delights? Need one dazzling show-stopper gift for that special someone? Whatever you’re looking for, the Holiday Crafts Fair will have it.

Over 30 Washington artists and crafters will offer a dizzying array of handcrafted jewelry, watches, pens, home décor, toys, and holiday novelties. From fine arts to fabric arts and wearables, the phrase “something for everyone” just might have been invented for this occasion!

The December farmers market will take place inside at Third Place Commons on the upper level of Lake Forest Park Town Center, while the Holiday Crafts Fair will take place just downstairs on the lower level. Both the farmers market and crafts fair will take place from 10am to 3pm.

If you’ve got SNAP benefits (or know someone who does), don’t forget that SNAP cards are always welcome at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. And you can still get your matching Fresh Bucks (with no limit) at the market, too, so don’t miss this chance to make your money go further.

This is also your last chance to use those 2017 Market Bucks, so bring them to the market this weekend and use them!

The LFP Farmers Market and Holiday Crafts Fair are presented by Third Place Commons, a community-supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering real community in real space. Third Place Commons is located at 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

Public Works taking it slow for new maintenance facilities

By Diane Hettrick

After failing to obtain approval for a consolidated maintenance facility in Hamlin Park, the Shoreline Public Works department is reassessing and evaluating the properties available to them.

The plan now is to divide resources between multiple areas rather than consolidating as a single facility.

Public Works Director Randy Witt says, "Following guidance from the City Council we are looking at the existing properties for locating city maintenance facilities.
"Currently, we are considering which operations can go to which property, what improvements are necessary to support operations at the different properties, and what the capital and operating costs would be for each of the properties."

The department can utilize four existing City properties for long-term City maintenance operations.

The properties are:
  1. Hamlin Yard (current maintenance facility site),
  2. North Maintenance Facility near Brugger's Bog Park
  3. Brightwater Portal Property on Ballinger Way
  4. Ronald Wastewater District property on Linden

The Brightwater Portal property on Ballinger Way is being leased to the US Postal Service for up to two years as parking for their postal delivery vans. The City retains ownership of the property.

The North Maintenance Facility on 25th NE next to Brugger's Bog Park will be reduced in size under current plans to develop an open channel creek and flood storage area through the site. Assuming the City Council approved construction, it's possible that the remainder of the current facility could be used a maintenance function.

Witt says, "We expect to report our findings and recommendation to the Council this coming summer."

Review: Seattle Musical Theater's Annie is a presentation not to miss

Review by Jim Anderson

Seattle Musical Theatre continues its 40th anniversary season with the second of five musicals presented in its home at Magnuson Park.

The musical theater production of Annie runs through December 17th.

Whether you already like Annie, or if you like the intimacy of small theater, or even if you just think people should smile and laugh and think optimistically – at least once in awhile – this is a presentation not to miss. This was my fourth or fifth ‘Annie’ and this is the best I have seen.

Some of that is the venue – intimate and warm and close to the stage and the music, but most of it is music, acting and singing at its best and most natural. On opening night, Faith Young as Annie never missed a beat. A natural for her role, her voice was clear and innocent, and carried a spirit of fun and optimism into every note and line.

For just a moment, opening night ‘whatever’ tried to strike half way into Act One at the presentation of the song, ‘Tomorrow’. Either the orchestra or the actress missed something from the first line of the score – and you must know, the song is really needed to set the optimistic tone of the story. Not – a – problem! The audience may not have even spotted it, because Faith Young quickly found the first note on her own – and nailed it!

What could have become a dark note, instead seemed to inspire everyone on stage and in the orchestra. Every song sounded as vibrant and fresh as the first night and as smooth as if they had performed these songs together for months.

The villains are the most fun.

One thing that makes this Annie so appealing are the villains. Director Tyrone Brown clearly sets up each villain to show the actors’ talents – and they shine! Rachel Brinn’s Miss Hannigan starts out ragging on children, establishing her villainy, and each scene after makes this character either pathetic or stunningly funny. You’ll want to see and hear each villain sing and prance again and again. Their light villainous touch will leave you laughing until they finally prance off to jail.

Noel Barbuto as Daddy Warbucks

Nestled into the center of all this are the plot’s heroes, Daddy Warbucks, his staff, and the 32nd President of the United States. The best Mr. Warbucks I’ve ever seen comes from the natural presence on stage of actor Noel Barbuto. The worst seats in the house have this giant of a man seemingly just a few feet away, but his engaging talent will have him in your head.

Warbuck’s secretary, Grace (Hayley Gaarde), glowed with an inner kindness that seemed to stun each villain. Michael Byron-Ingersoll, the butler, proves again and again that an actor can multiply the effect of any scene by the nod of a head or the stretch of an arm or a word.

Actors portraying the rest of Warbuck’s staff were amazing to watch. Each one lived on stage as if they were the star of the show, filling every moment with something to enjoy. And President Roosevelt came alive in posture, in his mythical and real words, and in what he meant to many who saw hope in dark times. His actor, Ed Robinson, became invisible.

You should note that alternating performances will see one of two actors in the role of Annie, Faith Young and Sydney Beaty. I captured a few moments with each and their parents after the show. Both young ladies have caught the acting bug and each has performed Annie multiple times. Faith Young is a fifth grader whose studies are integrated into the life of an actor. Sydney Beaty is an avid gymnast, diver and actor who is schooled in West Seattle at Our Lady of Guadalupe.

This is the second of five musicals presented at The Seattle Musical Theater at Magnuson Park (7120 62nd Avenue NE). Evening showtimes are every Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Thursday the 14th at 7:30pm. SMT also presents three 2pm matinees: Sunday, December 10th, Saturday the 16th, and the finale on Sunday, December 17th.

Tickets here.

King County Metro has regular service at times suitable for every performance (before and after) for Northgate Transit Center (Route 75), Downtown Seattle (Route 62), and other locations (see Metro schedule). The theater is accessible.
