Briarcrest / Ridgecrest forum asks the tough questions of Shoreline council candidates

By Diane Hettrick

Candidates for contested Shoreline Council seats took a lot of deep breaths before tackling the complex and thoughtful questions presented at the Briarcrest / Ridgecrest / Shoreline Area News candidate forum on Thursday evening at the Prince of Peace church on 20th NE.

Multi-part questions dealt with city-wide issues, some immediate, such as their position on injection sites, and others very long-range, such as their ideas on homelessness.

Other questions dealt with affordable housing, income tax, property taxes, upcoming bond issues, and rezone issues of tree loss, open space, and infrastructure.

There were some sharp contrasts. Jin-Ah (pronounced Gina) Kim, running against Keith McGlashan, and Susan Chang running against Carolyn Ahlgreen for an open seat, both took very moderate views of past actions by the city council. "You don't get a magic wand when you become a council member," said Jin-Ah. Susan Chang had been part of many of the decisions in her role on the Planning Commission, and has been attending city council meetings since July.

Carolyn Ahlgreen, on the other hand, listed a litany of accusations against the current council, saying they had threatened Dreamers, parks, and threatened people who opposed them with arrest, that they were not acting as voices of the people and were failing to protect and defend citizens.

Moderator Sara Kaye of Briarcrest announced that she was getting rid of the first question, as the City Council voted unanimously Monday to take Hamlin Park off the list of sites under consideration for a maintenance yard, eliciting applause from the audience. Chang, Kim, and Ahlgreen still pointed out they had all participated in the protest. McGlashan said that after the first staff presentation he had a private meeting with the City Manager and advised her to remove Hamlin Park from the list.

All the candidates said they were opposed to "injection sites" except for Kim, who has a unique perspective as a recovered opioid addict. All agreed that Shoreline was a poor location for such a site and already has Therapeutic Health Services on Aurora.

A question about the new development at the post office site not having retail space elicited comments about wanting restaurants and businesses, but noting the number of empty storefronts in North City.

A question of what to do about homelessness elicited several comments about finding the roots of the problem and developing solutions. One commented that the family whose rent was raised is in a different situation from an alcoholic / drug addict who is on the street and require different solutions. Ahlgren referred to addicts' choice to continue using as an impediment to solutions.

Councilmember McGlashan said that he served two years on the King county Committee to End Homelessness in Ten Years, which had every social service and government in the county represented. He said "after two years of work on the committee, I feel more hopeless now than when we started."

The Shoreline Council candidates will appear together for the last time at the Chamber of Commerce forum on Tuesday, October 17, 7pm at the Crest Theatre in Ridgecrest. (see article)

WeatherWatcher: Active weather, thunder, hail, cool and dry ahead

Friday, October 13, 2017

The last 24 hours has brought us significantly more active weather around here than we've been used to. Around 11:30pm Thursday night we had a thunderstorm move through the area, then early Friday morning a hail storm move through.

Initial reports were pointing at a Puget Sound Convergence zone as the cause of all this weather. However, after I reviewed radar images I've decided that Thursday night was just an unstable air mass moving through with a small scale thunderstorm squall line that happened to swing from west to east through Seattle, Shoreline, extendinh all the way up north past Burlington. You can click on any of these radar images for a full size view.

Radar image of Puget Sound Thursday night at 11:30PM Pacific.
Radar by National Weather Service

Friday morning's hail storm was a different story. There was a convergence zone, but it wasn't the typical one that forms from winds moving around the north and south sides of the Olympic mountain range. This one was formed by winds moving around Vancouver Island and converging west of Oak Harbor.

Below is a zoomed out image of Western Washington and Vancouver Island. I drew some arrows in red pointing in the direction winds were moving to create this type of convergence zone. You can see the perpendicular curved squall line northeast of Seattle at the eastern end of the convergence zone. That squall line was the hail storm.

Zoomed out radar image of Puget Sound Convergence Zone Friday at 8:00AM.

This convergence started spitting out mini squall lines which made it southeast through Everett, Lynnwood, and south through Shoreline and Bothell. One of the early morning squall lines was dumping a significant amount of hail.

Below is a closer view of the radar image at 8:00am Friday morning showing the nice, long convergence zone formed between Vancouver Island and the Cascade mountains.

Forecast: Believe it or not, we have some cooler weather ahead for the weekend. We are looking at lows in the 30's and highs in the upper 40's to low 50's. Our first frost is possible especially in exposed or uncovered areas. It may also be a good time to think about wrapping up external plumbing and plumbing fixtures.

The good news about this weekend is we will be dry, and partly-mostly sunny during the days with patchy fog at night. If we do have our first frost, it should kill off a good portion of the summer end wasp population.

Our cool and dry period comes to an end late Monday or early Tuesday morning. The jet stream is going to be pointed right at us next week by Tuesday morning with our usual fall Pacific storm track to finish up the week.

Theater review: Dracula - sink your teeth into this fang-tastic play

Seward and the Count face off

DRACULA

By Steven Dietz
Directed by Paul Fleming

Edmonds Driftwood Players
October 12 - 22, 2017

Review by Doug Gochanour

Fang~Tastic play, which you can really Sink Your Teeth Into

Edmonds Driftwood Players is now in its 59th season. Chew on that for a while. As part of its community theatre program, it offers what it terms TIPs. This stands for the Theatre of Intriguing Possibilities. The TIPs plays feature local playwrights, topical or mature subjects, or thought provoking themes.

Van Helsing and Lucy
Steven Dietz is a Seattle area playwright, who created this Dracula adaptation in 1966. It is based upon the 1897 Bram Stoker novel of the same name.

I may be sticking my neck out here, but I would bet that most everyone has heard of Dracula, Vixens, Vampires, the Undead, or perhaps the Zombie Apocalypse. This play is frequently performed around Halloween.

The play generally follows the plot of the novel. It tells the story by using narration, flashbacks, and vivid scenes. These depict Count Dracula’s journey to England from Transylvania, and the havoc created by his menu of new acquaintances.

Dracula (Asa Sholdez) invited Harker (Jon Loina) to Transylvania to bring along a London real estate deal for a new home location. This trip is more than Harker expected. Among other experiences, Vixens (Rabecca Erickson and Grace Madland) bring his blood to a boil.

Harker and Mina
Mina (Emily Milburn) waits for Harker’s return, while hanging out with her friend Lucy (Hanna Destiny Lynn). Dracula’s psychic powers confirm that they meet his taste for women. So, Lucy and Mina become targets of Dracula upon his arrival in London.

Dr. John Seward (Nate Thomsen) has two passions: Lucy, and understanding the mind of a madman. The particular madman is Renfield (David Alan Morrison), who exhibits symptoms of psychosis. Renfield offers some humorous relief.

Seward finds that Lucy is mysteriously deteriorating and sends for his old professor, Van Helsing (Phillip Keiman). Van Helsing recognizes vampire bites and gives Lucy a blood transfusion. Will Lucy recover? What will happen next?

Will Lucy recover? Is she now a vampire?
Does Dracula steal Harker's identity and begin menacing London? Is Lucy now a vampire?

How will this bloodthirsty tale evolve?

Do you think the ending has a lot at stake for humanity? It sucks that it is not revealed, Come to see Dracula, and get to the heart of the matter!

These leaves look tailor-made for Disney studios, as if they could suddenly rise in the wind and move gracefully in a complicated circle dance, orange and yellow skirts swirling.

Or maybe Lee arranged them artistically for a photo shoot. It doesn't matter.

CORRECTED: Budget statements from Shoreline School candidates Brady and Fralick

By Evan Smith

(An earlier post included the wrong statement from candidate Jill Brady. I include the correct statement here, and I apologize for the error. –Evan Smith)

Shoreline School Board candidates Jill Brady and Heather Fralick recently sent statements about their approach to considering a school-district budget.

The two are running in the November 7 election to replace retiring Board member Debi Ehrlichman representing Director District 2 in the northeast part of the Shoreline School District including the Lake Forest Park area.

Candidates must live in the director district they wish to represent, but voters from throughout the School District vote for board members representing all five director districts. The Shoreline School District includes all of the city of Shoreline and the city of Lake Forest Park.

One other Shoreline School Board position is on the November ballot. The other three will be on 2019 ballots.

Here are the statements from Brady and Fralick:

Shoreline School District 412, Director District 2

Jill Brady
Jill Brady

Each year the School Board reviews and adopts District budgets recommended by the Superintendent.

Since 90% of the budget is dedicated to teachers’ salaries, building operations and transportation, we must utilize dollars efficiently if we are to maintain a sustainable, balanced budget and support programs that impact student learning.

I had elementary school kids when our District found itself in dire financial straits and felt the pain of cutting services.

I will demand transparency and accountability and ask questions until I’m satisfied with the answers.

With a business degree and budget oversight/audit committee experience, I have the knowledge and commitment to provide exceptional financial stewardship for our schools.

Heather Fralick
Heather Fralick

Our district faces numerous budget challenges in the coming years, constrained by state budgets and equalization regulations. Yet, we need to develop a plan for a sustainable financial future.

Using my economic development and policy experience, I will work with our board directors, administrators, legislators, and election community leaders to:

1.) Develop innovative strategies for leveraging existing resources and facilities to support our students;

2.) Fight for hold-harmless provisions in the state’s budget to prevent the loss of funding for Shoreline;

3.) Advocate for fully funding our students’ education.

Learn about community efforts to create an Urban Forest Park with Trails in LFP

Stewardship Foundation raising money
to purchase 5 Acre Woods

Walk to 5 Acre Woods Saturday

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) invites the community to join us for “A Walk to 5 Acre Woods” event at 10:30am on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

Lake Forest Park now has a very special reason to celebrate this October which was proclaimed Urban and Community Forest Month in Washington by Governor Jay Inslee. The City of Lake Forest Park recently submitted a competitive bid of $1 million which was accepted by Seattle Public Utility for purchase of the 5 Acre Wood property located in the 19000 block of 40th Place NE.

The 5 Acre Woods site is the largest remaining mature forest within the area. It includes a wetland, a tributary of Lyon Creek, and serves as an important wildlife habitat.

Join us to celebrate the purchase of 5 Acre Woods and find out how you can help create this new park.

Thank you to all the citizens who expressed their desire to save 5 Acre Woods to the mayor and city council. The mayor and city council heard your voices and worked diligently to pass resolutions to purchase the property.

The City has entered an agreement with LFPSF which will allow the foundation to get more funding to repay the purchase of the land by late next year. If LFPSF is unable meet this deadline then the city will sell the property for development. Although the purchase represents a momentous milestone, it only temporarily forestalls development of the property. Your continued support is needed now more than ever to help with fundraising.

With assistance from the LFPSF, the City has applied for King County Conservation Future grants, one of which was awarded in 2016 and another that is recommended for approval this year. These grants will cover about 50% of the purchase price.

The incredible outpouring of citizen support for 5AW in the form of pledges or donations for the acquisition is now over $135,000. Together these funds meet roughly 65% of our fundraising goal of $1 million [BDP1] so a great deal of work remains to make 5 Acre Woods a reality.

In addition to fundraising, LFPSF will be involved in developing plans for enhancement of the property and managing the intensive volunteer effort necessary to remove invasive plant species.

Regular visitor to the Woods
Not suitable for apartment living

Next Steps and How You Can Help

  • If you would like to contribute to the LFPSF’s community fundraising efforts, contact Brad Keefe (keefeba@gmail.com) to donate, pledge or volunteer for fundraising.
  • Get involved! Demonstration of a high level of community involvement is a positive factor during the grant application review process so you can contribute in a meaningful way to our continued success.
  • Learn about volunteer opportunities that will ensure this urban forest provides critical habitat for decades to come. LFPSF will coordinate volunteer efforts in a similar model to Grace Cole Park.
  • Express your appreciation to the mayor, city council and city staff for appropriating city funds to use as a bridge loan so LFPSF can continue to work with the city to raise the remaining funds necessary to preserve this property as a community green space with trails.

Express lane opening delayed on Saturday and Sunday

Drivers who use the Interstate 5 express lanes will need to use the mainline for most of the morning on both Saturday, October 14, and Sunday, October 15.

Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will delay the opening of the southbound I-5 express lanes to clean the drainage system underneath the Ship Canal Bridge.

This work is important to complete before fall and winter weather hits in order to prevent clogging, which can cause debris and water to overflow onto the express lanes.

Closure details
  • Saturday, Oct. 14: The I-5 express lanes will remain closed until 10:30 a.m. The lanes will open southbound after the closure.
  • Sunday, Oct. 15: The I-5 express lanes will remain closed until 11 a.m. The lanes will open southbound after the closure.

Two Shoreline churches collaborate to provide food for Ridgecrest students

Volunteers packaging weekly bags with donated cereal, soups, milk,
juice, mac 'n cheese boxes, granola bars, fruit packets, etc

City Calvary Chapel and the Shoreline Seventh-day Adventist Church are once again pairing up to supply weekend groceries for 30 selected Ridgecrest Elementary students.

Only prepackaged, individual serving sized items can be used. Food and funds are donated by these church families and by food drives that a Ridgecrest Elementary Girl Scout Troop conduct at Central Market.

Families could go hungry without this program and
the church volunteers who run it.

The food is stored at CCC and packed into bags for delivery to the school.

If you would like to volunteer or donate to this program, contact City Calvary Chapel at 206-709-9416, Heidi Skersies, or the Adventist Church at 206-363-2355 , Jennifer Murphy.

Filling bags with food for hungry Shoreline children

The church volunteers are part of the Food4KidsShoreline. These groups provide food packages to chronically hungry students from low income or homeless households who are at risk of hunger over the weekends when free school meals are unavailable. Every Friday students are discreetly given a bag of food containing easy to prepare foods which is then tucked into their backpacks and brought home.

Shorewood student on bicycle critically injured by semi-truck

Teen hit riding bike to school

A 14 year old Shorewood High School student was critically injured after a collision with a semi truck just before 7:30am Wednesday morning.

Witnesses said the teen was westbound on N 175th St, on the sidewalk on the north side of the street, and was approaching Aurora Ave N.

A semi truck was also westbound on N 175th St and was making a right turn to go northbound on Aurora when the collision occurred.

He and his bicycle were caught under the bed of the truck and dragged for reportedly 30 feet onto Aurora.

The boy received critical injuries as a result of the accident and was taken to Harborview Hospital.

Firefighters at the headquarters station at 175th and Aurora grabbed their equipment and ran across the street to render immediate aid.

Northbound Aurora was closed for several hours from N 175th to N 185th for the investigation. Specific factors contributing to the accident have not been determined at this time.

Principal Bill Dunbar sent a message to parents which included the following:

In an effort to not interfere or distract from their investigation, we will be asking all students to remain on campus today while law enforcement completes their investigation. If you have existing plans to pick your child up early from school, please use the main front entrance next to the office.
We do have additional counseling support in our school today and throughout the week that is available to anyone in our school community who may need someone to talk to.

UPDATE: The student's family has communicated with the school and reports that he is expected to recover from his injuries.
