Flags at half-staff

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Local veterans honor groop
SVA member Sonney Alverez,
Post 227 members Raymond Coffey, Gerry Shogren, Bob Grasmick

On Monday, October 2, 2017 members of the Shoreline Veterans Association and The American Legion Post 227 lowered the flag at Gateway Plaza to half mast after the Las Vegas shooting.

After President Trump ordered all flags to be lowered to honor victims of the Las Vegas shooting the local Veterans groups sent members to render honors as the flag was lowered.

Gateway Plaza is located at N 185th and Midvale, just off Aurora.

From the Governor's Office:

Pursuant to the Presidential Proclamation issued October 2, Governor Inslee hereby directs that Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff immediately, in honor of the victims of the attack in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Friday, October 6, 2017.

Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.

Please call 360-239-1317 if you have any questions about this flag lowering.

Shoreline meeting of Moms Demand Action (For Gun Sense in America)

Monday, October 16, 2017, 7pm, Shoreline - RSVP here

Last Sunday night in Las Vegas at least 59 people were shot and killed and more than 500 were hospitalized. This is now the largest and most deadly shooting in modern American history.

This shooting is a terrifying tragedy. And just as terrifying is the frequency of shootings in this country, and worse, our growing acceptance of their regularity. 93 Americans a day. This is not normal. This is a public health and public safety crisis.

Moms Demand Action supports the 2nd Amendment, but we believe common-sense solutions can help decrease the escalating epidemic of gun violence that kills too many of our children and loved ones every day. Whether the gun violence happens in urban Chicago, suburban Virginia, or rural Texas, we must act now on new and stronger gun laws and policies to protect our families and our communities.

Moms Demand Action envisions a country where all children and families are safe from gun violence. Our nonpartisan grassroots movement has grown to include a chapter in every state across the country. We are educating, motivating, and mobilizing supporters to take action that will result in stronger laws and policies to save lives.

To find out more, and how you can get involved, use the link to RSVP for a New Member Meeting of the Shoreline Local Group of Moms Demand Action.

Reward up to $26,000 in Shoreline cat killing

Quixote was viciously killed
by an unknown assailant
Photo from Whisker City

On Tuesday September 19, 2017 at 3:00am someone broke into Whisker City Cat Rescue on 183rd and Ashworth and stomped a cat to death.

"Quixote" was an exotic Savannah breed and valued at $3500. Neighbors believe the perpetrator lives in the area and has a grudge against the shelter. There are no recorded complaints with police or animal control against Whisker City.

The brutal beating took place under a bright porch light in the outdoor enclosure of one of the cabins used for housing special needs cats, like birthing and closely related domestic cats. Anyone walking by at that hour would have heard the violent beating. A hearing witness said the beating was intermittent and lasted for approximately 15 minutes. That witness did not call 911.

A combined reward of $26,000 has been raised and will be doubled by a private donor upon conviction. Shelter founder, April Brown, is asking surrounding neighbors and business owners to check video footage for any person walking in the area between Aurora and Meridian down Ashworth street after midnight on September 18 and before daylight on September 19.

The Shoreline Police and King County Sheriff’s detectives are actively investigating the brutal and senseless killing of Quixote, a cat staying at the Whisker City Cat Rescue. Detectives have been canvassing the area looking for witnesses, surveillance video and other evidence. Detectives have been in contact with local enforcement agencies and King County Animal Control and are diligently working to identify and hold the person(s) accountable for this violent act. If you have information that can assist detectives please call 911, or 206-296-3311.

Inaugural Girls' Hockey League begins

The first-ever girls' hockey league in Washington State, the Western Washington Female Hockey League (WWFHL), started last weekend at Highland Ice Arena with a resounding success.

Players from the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) at the 8U, 10U and 12U/14U age brackets took the ice with pride in their new league jerseys bearing the Washington Wild team's crest, league emblem, and the association's 15th anniversary patch on their sleeves.

Games were tight, fast paced, and competitive, with several ending in tie games. Most importantly, Highland Ice Arena was invaded by smiling female hockey players from the early morning to the early afternoon, happy to play the game they love. The inaugural girls' hockey league spans from October through March.

The Western Washington Female Hockey Association is the only girls' hockey association in the state and its mission is to empower girls through the sport of ice hockey so that they may reach their goals and dreams on and off the ice.

A new Learn To Play class is scheduled to start this Sunday, October 8th at Highland Ice Arena and spots are still available; equipment may be rented. More information here

Letter to the Editor: Car and bike safety

To the Editor:

Today I witnessed a car turning without using their turn signal and hitting a young man on his bicycle. The car was a white Mazda with a bike rack and bike on the back.

The driver of the car briefly stopped, but took off without finding out if the biker was injured. I was a witness and by the time I had turned around to see if the biker was hurt and needed help, the car had disappeared.

Please do the right thing and turn yourself in to the Shoreline Police. I only regret that I did not get your license number.

This took place on Monday, October 2 at 2 pm. Both the biker and the car were heading east on N. 185. The car turned south on Meridian. The biker was in a marked bike lane following the rules.

With all the new bike lanes in Shoreline I urge everyone to be more careful, use their turn signals and check to make sure there is no one in the bike lanes before making turns.

Dahlias for Senior Center: I'm a Hottie

Sunday, October 1, 2017

I'm A Hottie

I’m A Hottie was first introduced to dahlia lovers in 2006. The plant grows to 5-6’ tall and is so thick and sturdy it barely needs staking. Stems are long and very strong, and the flower stands upright making her excellent in large bouquets. Her form is described as Informal Decorative, and the blooms measure up to 8” across.

Most of my favorite dahlia blossoms have colors that variegate, blend and are hard to pin down. I’m A Hottie glows from within long, gently turning petals streaked with pinks and fuchsia.

She was very happy with the sun last week and will bloom solidly for at least two more weeks.

This and other blooms are available at the Ridgecrest Pub on NE 165th at 5th NE, for a donation to the Senior Center. New bouquets every Tuesday and Friday.

To be or not to be... a junior football referee?

Junior football referee

To be or not to be... a junior football referee?

It's a fair question really. Given that a lot of parents don't have the time or perhaps the desire to volunteer, the old adage "Somebody has to do it" certainly applies.

Somebody does HAVE to do it and quite often that "somebody" is learning the game just like the team for whom you are cheering.

If you think the fees for your child's extracurricular activities are expensive now, try paying for the type of professional you wish was calling your little guy's game.

Exactly why would a perfectly sane human being subject themselves to abuse from both sides at the same time?

Even a politician has friends on one side(line) or the other. It may be for the attention they receive, the ability to control a situation, they may simply like the way they look in black and white stripes?

It certainly isn't for the money.

Whatever the reason that may compel someone to spend an entire day getting screamed at by coaches, parents, grandparents and, all too often, the players themselves, it can hardly be worth it.

We're all guilty of thinking we could do a better job. We all secretly wish we had our very own whistle, but realistically, not all of us are that crazy.

To be or not to be a junior football referee, that IS the question. The answer to which is yes... and please!

Why? Because we need you. Because despite what we tell ourselves and our fellow parents, we really couldn't do a better job and because even though you need glasses and haven't read the rules since Walter Camp made them up, the success of our season depends entirely upon you.

Good calls, bad calls, we'll take them. They help our young men to deal with life's joys and disappointments. They teach our players to appreciate that with which they have absolutely no control and finally, bad calls especially, teach our young men (and sometimes women) that at this level anyway, it's just a game.

2017 Election: County levy on November ballot

By Evan Smith

King Voters face a levy on the November 7 ballot to support veterans, seniors and vulnerable populations. The measure seeks to renew a levy that voters approved in 2005 and renewed in 2011.

The measure can pass with a simple majority.

Here is the material about the measure that will appear in voters’ pamphlets that will go into the mail at about the same time that the county sends ballots, October 18:

King County

Proposition No. 1

---Levy Lid Lift for Veterans, Seniors and Vulnerable Populations

Ballot Title

The King County Council passed Ordinance 18555 concerning funding for veterans, seniors and vulnerable populations. If approved, this proposition would replace an expiring levy and fund capital facilities and regional health and human services for veterans and military service members and their families, seniors and their caregivers, and vulnerable populations. It would authorize an additional property tax for six years beginning with a 2017 rate of $0.10 per $1,000 of assessed valuation for collection in 2018. The first year levy amount would be the base for computing annual increases up to 3.5% for collection in 2019 through 2023, as provided in Ordinance 18555. Should this proposition be?

Approved__

Rejected __

Explanatory Statement

As provided in Ordinance 18555, this proposition would authorize King County to levy an additional regular property tax for six years beginning with a 2017 rate of ten cents ($0.10) per one thousand dollars ($1,000) of assessed valuation for collection in 2018. The dollar amount of the levy collected in 2018 would be the base for computing annual increases of up to 3.5% in 2019 through 2023.

The levy would fund regional health and human services and capital facilities for veterans and military service members and their families, seniors and their caregivers, and vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations are defined in the ordinance as persons or communities that are susceptible to reduced health, housing, financial or social stability outcomes because of current experience or historical exposure to trauma, violence, poverty, isolation, bias, racism, stigma, discrimination, disability or chronic illness. Examples of vulnerable populations are listed in the ordinance.

Funded services would promote outcomes related to healthy living, housing stability, financial stability, social engagement, service system improvement and access, criminal justice system diversion, education and work force development, and civil legal aid to vulnerable populations. Proceeds would also be used to provide small organizations that offer such services with technical assistance and capacity building, such as legal, accounting, human resources, and leadership development and services support.

Proceeds may be used to mitigate the levy’s impact on metropolitan park districts and fire districts if their levies are reduced through prorationing under RCW 84.52.010. Any levy proceeds received by these districts must be used to provide the same types of services funded by the levy.

Statement in favor

Since 2005, the levy has built over 2,000 permanent and affordable units for veterans and vulnerable families, provided emergency shelter to thousands more, expanded mental health and addiction services, and improved self-sufficiency and job training for returning service members. This replacement measure will help meet the needs of the growing senior population, address acute challenges facing veterans, and tackle homelessness with $24 million in housing investments.

An independent citizen commission will continue ensuring efficient service delivery.

Your Yes vote will:
  • Expand our commitment to veterans and their families, creating additional veteran coordination centers; continue job training and placement; expand housing, shelter, and supportive services.
  • Renew King County’s commitment to our most vulnerable, increasing legal and housing resources for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault; provide mobile medical vans for people experiencing homelessness or isolation, and support individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.
  • Support low-income seniors with housing programs and tax relief, expand food programs like Meals on Wheels, and enhance programs that promote physical and emotional health.

This replacement levy will cost the typical household an additional $28/year. It is endorsed by veterans advocates, homelessness and domestic violence service providers, labor unions, senior organizations, Council Republicans and Democrats; more!

Friday Afternoon at the Movies: Sunset Boulevard

Friday Afternoon at the Movies,
October 6, 1:30-4 pm

Hosted by Scarecrow Video, the Silver Cinema Project is an opportunity to enjoy and then discuss golden age Hollywood classics.

Each screening is introduced by a Scarecrow expert.

This month’s film is Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder’s 1950 film noir drama about an aging silent film star who refuses to believe her stardom has ended.

According to Wikipedia,

"The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent film star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen, with Erich von Stroheim as Max von Mayerling, her devoted servant.

"Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson."

Sunset Boulevard was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won three. Sunset Boulevard was included in the first group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry."

This presentation is free with popcorn popped by Chef Donnie!

Note: this film was originally scheduled in September.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Mighty Jack

Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke

Jack has a lot to worry about: he worries about his mom, who works two (or more) jobs just to pay the bills. He worries about his sister Maddie, who doesn't talk, and he worries about himself...

But one day Maddie does talk, and tells him to trade their mom's car for a handful of seeds. It's the best, weirdest, craziest thing that Jack has ever done.

The garden grown from the seeds is full of strange vegetables that bite, or crawl, or grab. And one full moon night, one of the plants turns into a DRAGON.

I thought that nothing would ever supplant my fangirl love of Ben Hatke's Zita the Space Girl series, but Mighty Jack just might do it.

This is a fabulous fairy tail spun on its head, with kick-butt main characters, terrific artwork (and a DRAGON!).

The text is accessible down to about grade 3, KCLS shelves it with the teen books, and the grownups will be fighting for their turn to read it.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.
