Dahlias for Senior Center: Andrew Charles

Andrew Charles

Andrew Charles was first introduced to dahlia lovers in 2010.

His rich golden orange blooms present abundantly on a 5’ bush with long sturdy stems and an upright presentation.

Long-lasting in bouquets, it’s a very good cut flower.

Officially a 4-6” wide Informal Decorative form, Andrew’s petals splay playfully from his center, sometimes behaving, sometimes like long floppy ears. The bloom’s depth is shallow for size; and the yellows, reds, gold and occasional hints of rose cause this flower to combine and contrast well with just about every other flower possible in a bouquet.

This and other blooms are available at the Ridgecrest Pub on NE 165th at 5th NE, for a donation to the Senior Center. New bouquets every Tuesday and Friday.

Robberies at Ballinger Commons interrupted by neighbor's call to police

Tuesday, September 26, 2017

Ballinger Commons

Shoreline Police responded to a report of a burglary to an apartment in Ballinger Commons complex on N 205th just before noon on Monday.

A neighbor who witnessed the burglary called when she saw a suspect knock on a neighbor's apartment - then when no one answered the suspect went around to the balcony to enter the apartment.

Deputies and K-9 arrived just after the suspect fled and were unable to locate him. They know at least two apartment units were broken into and believe he may have attempted to gain entry into other apartments.

The suspect is described as a black male, 25-30 years old, 5’9” to 5’10” tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a light gray hoody, dark blue jeans with a design on the back pockets.

The neighbor who called 911 more than likely prevented other burglaries from occurring and the suspect had to flee from before being able to take some of the loot he had staged to remove.

Police applaud the quick action of the neighbor and remind others to do the same and call 911 if they see suspicious activity like this.

Neighbors at the large Ballinger Commons complex are now in discussions about starting a Shoreline Watch. For information about this, contact Officer Paula Bates, 206-801-2764.

City of Lake Forest Park's Central Subarea planning is underway - join in

LFP Central Sub Area Plan - Workshop and Survey

We are in exciting times ripe with opportunity! Sound Transit’s bus rapid transit (BRT) and a park-and-ride come to Town Center in 2024, connecting Town Center to light rail in Shoreline and the east side.

Recent Lyon Creek enhancements highlight the potential for natural and public features. The region’s population is growing dramatically, creating a different development climate from a decade ago. The heart of our city needs an updated vision to keep pace with these changes and set the course for a transit and people-oriented town center ready for the next 50 years.

Lake Forest Park has an incredible opportunity to update its center’s long-term vision by developing a Central Subarea Plan. The Plan will guide land use, zoning, and connections in the Central Subarea and will include development economics analysis, integration of a transit center into the subarea, and robust community-wide visioning about best opportunities.

Two critical opportunities for giving your early thoughts on Town Center’s future include:
  • Come to Workshop 1, Wednesday, October 11, 6-8pm at LFP City Hall 17425 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park.
    • Come enjoy dinner and conversation with your neighbors.
    • Childcare will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each market will take place from 10am to 3pm and will correspond with a simultaneous farmers market.

Crafts markets will take place in the lower level of Lake Forest Park Town Center while the farmers markets will take place outside in their usual locations or inside at Third Place Commons, depending on the weather.

An additional farmers market (with no crafts fair) will also take place on Sunday, November 5th.

All complete application packets received by Tuesday, October 10th will be considered for these juried events.

No matter your medium or style, you are encouraged to submit an application for consideration.

I'm afraid the small size doesn't do justice to this panoramic view of the Seattle waterfront that Lee Lageschulte captured from the Bremerton ferry.

It should be wall-sized. You might try clicking on the photo to enlarge it.

It's still pretty, even in a smaller version.

Mesothelioma in Washington State - a rare cancer to watch out for

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer with only one known cause - asbestos. Around 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States.

In Washington state the mesothelioma death rate of 12.2 per million people is much higher than the national average, according to the CDC.
Specifically in King County, Washington there were 1,475 asbestos related deaths from 1999 to 2013. That averages out to 98 deaths per year due to asbestos exposure.

This cancer is caused by the inhalation of asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous material. The toxin was widely used in construction, oil refining, and shipbuilding and repair in decades past. Many older homes - built up to the 1970s - contain the carcinogen. While there are three types of mesothelioma, the most common form is pleural mesothelioma, with the disease developing in the lining of the lungs.

Although asbestos is no longer mined in the United States it is still widely used around the country. Mesothelioma Awareness Day, September 26, is the one day a year that this rare disease is in the spotlight.

The fight for a complete asbestos ban is the only way to deter the continuing growing numbers of diagnoses each year.

Prevention of exposure is paramount because of the difficulty surrounding mesothelioma diagnosis. Many times mesothelioma is not diagnosed until the third or fourth stage when symptoms become more pronounced. At this aggressive stage of the cancer prognosis is very poor. The average life expectancy for those diagnosed with mesothelioma is just 12 to 21 months.

The symptoms of the disease are often mistaken for other more common illnesses such as pneumonia or the flu. Seeing a medical professional as soon as your body feels amiss is imperative to early and accurate detection.

Mesothelioma doctors can be found at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington Medical Center, and Swedish Cancer Institute at Swedish Medical Center - all located in Seattle.

Join in the conversation by following the Mesothelioma discussion on Twitter, September 26 at 9am. PT, and using the hashtag #EndMeso.

Candidate Forum: Oct 10 Richmond Beach Community Association has all Shoreline candidates

Be an informed voter

Richmond Beach Community Association's Candidates Forum
Tuesday, October 10, 7:00pm
Ricmond Beach Congregational Church

All the candidates for Shoreline political offices have been invited to the Richmond Beach Community Association's annual Candidates Forum. This is in the place of the October public meeting -- Tuesday, October 10 -- but starting at 7:00pm.

The Candidates Forum puts the office seekers before the public so they can personally make their pitches, and the audience has the opportunity to put questions to the politicians in a moderated Q / A session. In addition, there is informal time where people can interact with the candidates one on one.

With four city council positions, two school board races, Ronald Wastewater and two fire commissioner positions, it will be a full evening.

The RBCA has decided to concentrate on the local races; there are other forums in the area that concentrate on county positions such as Executive and Sheriff. However, the political parties and spokespeople for those other offices and advocates for ballot measures are welcome to be on site and mingle during the informal meet and greet.

Those running unopposed, which include Councilman Will Hall, current Mayor Chris Roberts, Ronald Wastewater’s Bob Ransom and Shoreline Fire Commissioners Jon Kennison and David Harris, will have the opportunity to share their views and discuss their plans.

Vying for Shoreline School Board are Heather Fralick and Jill Brady (open Position 2) and incumbent David Wilson and Steven J. Pollack (Position 3).

The contested city council seats pit Susan Chang against Carolyn Ahlgreen for Position 5 and Keith McGlashan and Jin-Ah Kim for Position 1.

The Board of Commissioners for Ronald Wastewater sees a tussle between Wes Brandon, currently finishing the term of the late Arne Lind, and challenger Paul Barrera.

The forum will be held in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, located at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue NW.

In August of 2015, Shoreline voters approved a proposition to allow Shoreline Fire to issue bonds for capital improvements and major equipment.

The first action on that voter approval came on Saturday, when the department took possession of a brand new ladder truck.

The truck is expected to last 15-20 years.

The existing ladder truck is 25 years old and cost $415,000 when it was purchased.

The new truck cost $1.1 million. It is fully automated and can be set up from the driver's position. The ladder will go to its full 100 foot extension more rapidly than the ladder on the old truck.

Letter to the Editor: Our uninvolved and uninformed Shoreline citizens

Sunday, September 24, 2017

To the Editor:

I have lived Shoreline for 20+ years. As a PCO for my Ridgecrest precinct I spent countless hours walking door to door contacting residents, and businesses about various local issues.

I have found the level of ignorance about issues that affect our lives, individually and collectively, to be abysmal. The level of involvement is even lower.

A handful of folks work hard to preserve Shoreline's way of life, but the largest majority remain complacent.

Each of us has a civic responsibility to inform ourselves and take an active role in contributing to this city in ways that are meaningful to each and all of us.

Preventing the clearcutting at Hamlin Park is just one of such crucial issues.

Issue statements from LFP council incumbent Wright and challenger O’Brien

By Evan Smith

Lake Forest Park city council incumbent John Wright and challenger Ben Gonzalez O’Brien recently sent statements about their views of the most important issue or issues in the November 7 general election.

They are running for one of four LFP council positions on the 2017 ballot, the only one that is contested. Incumbents in the other three positions are running unopposed.

Here are their statements:

City of Lake Forest Park, Council Position 3

John Wright
John Wright

The most immediate issue facing LFP today is crafting an agreement between the City, Sound Transit, and Town-Center owners to integrate a new ST-3 transit center with mall redevelopment and establishing Bus Rapid Transit and highway improvements.

This will improve services and amenities for our citizens and will transform the center into a vibrant community hub. We only have 18 months to finalize the agreement and only one chance to get it right, but the possibilities are tremendous.

We must also slow new development in our neighborhoods or risk losing what makes LFP so special. Current regulations restrict a citizen’s ability to manage their trees, but much greater impact to our quality of life is done by densification and development.

Ben Gonzalez O’Brien
Ben Gonzalez O’Brien

As your candidate for City Council, I believe there are three main issues facing our community. I am prepared to hit the ground running, always with community concerns in mind.

First, I will work to increase transparency and accountability. We should strive to develop better communication between the council and residents and encourage participation of the community.

Second, we should strengthen our tree ordinance, to protect our natural environment, and ensure that future generations can benefit from our stewardship.

Third, I would develop a diverse housing plan, so that all residents looking to stay in LFP can afford to. For example, by revitalizing the Town Center, we could protect forested areas from over-development, while allowing growth and mitigating ST3 effects.
