World Concern in Haiti

Saturday, September 16, 2017

Haiti after Hurricane Irma
Shoreline's World Concern humanitarian organization has had a team in Haiti since before Hurricane Irma struck.

They report that the storm passed north of them so it was not devastating as it was for other Caribbean islands.

The entire north coast (2.2 million people) experienced hurricane force winds, with rain and flooding affecting the whole country.

Haiti is an impoverished country that was still recovering from Hurricane Matthew, which ripped through southern Haiti in October 2016.

If you wish to contribute to World Concern's efforts in Haiti, here is the donation page.

Introductory statement from unopposed Shoreline council incumbent Hall

By Evan Smith

This is the third entry in a series of posts that present statements from candidates on the November 7 general-election ballot. This weekend, I present statements from unopposed candidates. I’ll continue to present statements from candidates for contested positions starting Monday.

Shoreline City Council incumbent Will Hall is running unopposed on the November 7 ballot. He recently sent this introductory statement:

City of Shoreline, Council Position 3

Will Hall
Shoreline City Council
Will Hall—

Shoreline is a fantastic city with great schools, great parks, and great people. We want a healthy environment and safe neighborhoods – not just for us, but for our children. With light rail coming, we have a lot to do to improve sidewalks, protect trees, and expand our parks.

This work requires experience. With eight years on city council and 25 years of leadership in the public and private sectors, I can get the job done. By actively listening to you and your neighbors, we can do it together. Please let me know what you want for Shoreline.

I am endorsed by Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, NARAL, and Police Officers Guild.

Ask the Bird Lady: Another rare bird strays into Shoreline

Amy Duz took this photo at NW 185th St. and 1st Ave NW in Richmond Highlands and correctly identified the bird as a Chukar.

Chris the Bird Lady says:

What in the world is it doing HERE???

Chukars are an introduced game bird that live in eastern Washington and other dry areas.

In all my birding, including three years of doing a Breeding Bird Survey in far eastern Washington, I have only seen ONE Chukar, even though I have gone to areas that I know Chukar have been seen.

So yes, it IS rare in Western Washington. Don't know how it got here. They are not distance flyers.

I wonder if someone saved it from a forest fire, and then released it on this side of the mountains.

Introductory statements from an LFP Council incumbent and his challenger

By Evan Smith

Lake Forest Park City Council incumbent John Wright and challenger Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien recently sent statements to introduce themselves to voters. The two are running on the November 7 general-election ballot.

Here are their statements:

City of Lake Forest Park, Council Position 3

John Wright
John Wright

Dear LFP neighbors, I’m John Wright and I ’m running for re-election to the City Council. I’m a 21-year resident of LFP, my children attended Shoreline schools, and I’ve been a volunteer here since just after we arrived in 1996. Professionally I’m a construction manager and engineer, and a 30-year military veteran. I have a long list of accomplishments on the City Council and a list of important work that still needs to be done, however I’m not allowed enough space here to list them so I’ll ask you to visit JWright4LFP.com for details. I love Lake Forest Park and it’s my honor to represent you on the Council!

Ben Gonzalez O'Brien
Ben Gonzalez O'Brien

I am a Professor of Political Science at Highline College and will bring a unique perspective to the Lake Forest Park City Council as a Latino and former high school dropout who has experienced the highs and lows of the American Dream. As a strong advocate of social justice issues, I was inspired to run after speaking before the Council on Resolution 1606, which added undocumented immigrants and the LGBTQ community to our Charter of Compassion. I believe that local government should be more transparent and accountable, that we should protect the natural beauty of our city, and that we must develop a ten-year plan for affordable housing.

Unified Robotics Kickoff: A Chance to Participate in Change

Thursday, September 14, 2017

Eva Taylor of Unified Robotics
Would you like to foster equity?

From 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday the 19th of September, Unified Robotics will host its second annual kickoff event at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

The event will serve as an introduction to the inclusion-based program, which bolsters STEM participation, self-esteem, and leadership amongst students with and without intellectual disabilities.

Last year the introductory event saw an unprecedented amount of demonstrated interest, and the team hopes to receive a similar response this year.

The timetable of the event will include workshops, testimonials, and a spirited game demonstration. Instruction will be given regarding how to start a team, foster inclusion in schools, and build and program a competition-ready robot.

Potential participants will have the opportunity to dine and discuss robotics in a building dedicated to the exploration of STEM fields. Before the main presentation on the logistics of starting a team, Special Olympics Unified Robotics will provide a dinner free of charge.

Overall, the event will serve as a testament to founder Delaney Foster’s vision. Inspired by her sister Kendall, who is on the autism spectrum, Delaney developed the program with the goal of encouraging participation and opportunity in STEM. On September 19th, any individual interested in the program will have the opportunity to attend and further support this vision.

Email for more information or contact Student lead Andrew LaPrade and program mentor Noelle Foster. Additional information may be found at the website.

IRS phone scam

By Diane Hettrick

One of our contributors recently got a particularly aggressive version of the IRS scam.

I got a message saying I was under investigation for fraud, there was a warrant for my arrest and my property was under surveillance (jeeze!) I reported it to the Lake Forest Park police.

Her caller ID showed a 206 number. Since she is bold (we don't recommend trying this!), she called the number.

They answered the phone "IRS".

Clearly they are successful in frightening people into calling back - and getting money out of them.

Hope nobody falls for this.

Trust me. I have dealt with the IRS. They don't make phone calls. They send written communications - usually after a three month lag - and usually you will get the same thing at least three times in slightly different versions.

It's the government, folks. They will bury you in paper - but they won't call.

Candidates for open school position introduce themselves

By Evan Smith

The two candidates for an open position on the Shoreline School Board recently sent statements to introduce themselves to voters. Heather Fralick and Jill Brady are running on the Nov. 7 ballot for the position that Debi Ehrlichman now holds.

Here are the statements from the two candidates:

Shoreline School District Board, Pos. 2

Heather Fralick--

I would appreciate your vote for the Shoreline School Board in November.

I am a mom and teacher committed to the success of all of our children. We need a District that cultivates an environment where each student is capable of succeeding. We must advocate for additional classroom resources from the State and address issues surrounding equity and inclusion.

I will engage in deliberative decision-making that considers the whole picture and values the perspectives of parents and students, teachers and administrators, and our broader community to ensure that our children get the best education possible. Cooperation and collaboration are key to maintaining the quality and strength of our schools.

Jill Brady—

Jill is a committed education advocate and proven leader. Married to a Shorecrest graduate and raising two children, she has 13 years’ experience bringing parents, teachers, administrators and community members together to ensure all children have the best access to learning.

With a B.A. in Business and a leader of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and PTA, she will continue to build partnerships and ensure strong financial stewardship as we implement new state laws and build new schools.

Jill is a longtime Lake Forest Park resident and proud to have received the sole endorsement of retiring School Board President Debi Ehrlichman, along with many teachers, parents, and city/community/state leaders. wwwElectJillBrady.org

Red, White, & Blue buttons at Washington State annual button show in Shoreline

The annual button show will be in Shoreline on Friday and Saturday, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1515 N 160th St, Shoreline 98155.

Friday is for judges to review collections and make awards. The Saturday show is open to the public 10am to 4pm.

Button collecting is a fun hobby as there are so many different, interesting buttons made out of so many different materials. Many of the buttons are quite valuable, especially the older ones from the 18th century or older. Plus there are many buttons being made for collectors that are also quite expensive. The prices vary greatly, from $20 to $50 and on up to over $100 each.

On Saturday we will welcome all who are interested in seeing what we have and talking to collectors and dealers. This year one of the dealers will even be selling jewelry made with buttons.

There is also a silent auction and several baskets with buttons and other goodies to be raffled off. There is no entry fee but a donation of $5 is suggested.
