It takes a village to outfit 1000 kids for school

PTA volunteers are ready to check people in
Photo from The WORKS

The Back to School event Saturday, August 26, 2017 handed out backpacks full of school supplies. They had gently used clothing and winter coats for families to choose. They supplied packages of new underwear, socks, and hygiene supplies. Hairdressers gave haircuts.

They were in a new location this year - Ridgecrest Elementary, so they had all new logistics to figure out how to efficiently move 1000 children and their families through all the different stations.

There were booths with resource information for the families.

And when it was all over, they packed up what was left and took it to The WORKS - the PTA Council clothing room - to hand out during the year as new children enter Shoreline Schools. In a few months, the process will start all over again.

The event serves a thousand children of families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/ or experiencing circumstances in their life that make it challenging to prepare their children for going back to school.

Each PTA in every Shoreline School contributes to the event. The Back To School Consortium includes Hopelink; City of Shoreline; Ronald United Methodist Church; The Works of Shoreline PTA Council; Shoreline School District and the Readiness to Learn Program; Shoreline Community Care; Center for Human Services; Turning Point and the Dale Turner Family YMCA.

Public Art City of Shoreline #20: Echo in Time

City of Shoreline Public Art Collection
1st Avenue NE and NE 205th St
City of Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-grant and 1% for Public Art Program 2013

Echo in Time  Andy Echelshall, artist, The Mural Works. Acrylic paint and sealant on concrete.

Artist’s statement: As a resident of Edmonds I am passionate about the beauty and history of the area. I was conscious of the great opportunity presented by this site, its visibility from SR 104, nearby residences and the cemetery. I wanted to create something that is not only visually appealing but educational and intriguing, a pleasing visual respite from the morning commute and a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association mural project combined all of the elements I love about mural painting: history, the environment and landscape. This was a wonderful project to be a part of and I’m honored to have been given the opportunity.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has a new home at Shoreline Free Methodist

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has a new home
at the Shoreline Free Methodist Church

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has found a new home at the Shoreline Free Methodist Church.

The preschool had been renting surplus classroom space from the Shoreline School District for over 30 years. Recent growth in Shoreline has filled elementary schools to capacity, resulting in several local preschools needing to relocate.

Shoreline Coop is grateful that the School District offered to rent them rooms at the Shoreline Center for one additional year (2016-2017), which allowed them sufficient time to locate and secure their new home.

Shoreline Free Methodist Church has been immensely welcoming and supportive as Shoreline Coop worked with the City of Shoreline on permitting and requirements in order to remodel the classroom space to bring it up to code to accommodate a new use of space in their building.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool invites the community to their Open House Wednesday, August 30 from 2:00 - 6:00pm. The church is at the corner of 5th NE and NE 175th, 510 NE 175th St, Shoreline 98155.

Shoreline Coop currently has openings in their Inventors class (4-5 years old), which meets three afternoons a week and their Adventurers class (1.5-2.5 years old) which meets one morning per week.

Check their website for more details about these classes and to register.

Trail safety - simple rules to stay safe on our trails

Text and photo from King County Parks

Follow these simple rules to stay safe on trails:
  • Stay right, pass left - Be aware of your surroundings at all times and follow the rules of the road to keep everyone safe.
  • Leave room for others to pass - Whether walking or biking, always leave enough room for others to get around your person or group. Don't hog the trail!
  • Use your voice or bell to let others know you're coming - No one likes to be surprised by someone coming up behind them. Let other know you're coming - before you arrive.
  • Go slow when passing, no sneaking - Reduce your speed when passing for everyone's safety.
  • Be visible, wear reflective gear or lights in low light - Make sure you're always easy to see from all sides.
  • Keep pets close for their safety and others- Retractable leashes can easily become a hazard on busy trails. Keep dogs (and cats) safe when on leash.
  • Most of all, obey posted speed limits of 15 mph when biking.

But most of all, use common sense, and be a good trail neighbor. Go slow around others.

It's up to all of us to keep our trails safe.

County Exec proposes flat fee for Metro bus fares

County Executive Dow Constantine
King County Executive Dow Constantine announced a proposal Wednesday to simplify Metro’s fares, establishing a single $2.75 fare for all adult passengers, no matter the time of day or where they travel in King County.

The proposed ordinance also would increase assistance for passengers who earn a lower income.

Metro currently has one of the most complex fare structures in the nation, with one zone for the City of Seattle and another for all areas outside the city, as well as extra charges during the morning and evening commute.

One-third of riders in a recent survey said the current system is too complex and difficult to understand. In a proposal to the King County Council announced today, Executive Constantine streamlined Metro fares to $2.75, and increased funding for discounted tickets.

"You said you wanted simpler fares, and we made it happen. No matter where or when you ride, simpler is better,” said Executive Constantine.
"For riders who may end up paying a little more, we’re making sure people with low incomes, seniors, and the disabled and have more access to transit than ever.”

About 65 percent of Metro customers will see no change or a fare reduction, according to boarding data.

Metro spent six months hearing from customers, and received more than 11,000 responses to two public surveys, including one in which 80 percent expressed support for a flat fare.

If the King County Council approves the proposed ordinance, it could take effect as soon as July 2018.

Something Shiny & New at Third Place Commons

As the (saw)dust begins to clear, you may have noticed that Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park's Town Center has been looking a little shinier lately, and that’s thanks to the hard work of a whole lot of great folks who came together to make it happen.

The work to freshen up the Commons was initiated by the “Renew the Space” subcommittee of the Third Place Commons Board of Directors after the board identified this work as a priority for 2017.

“We felt that it was important to refresh our spaces in the Commons to better serve our community and provide a more welcoming environment,” explains Norman Lieberman, who chairs both the Board and the Renew the Space Committee.

After doing a full inventory of the space, furniture, and community needs, the committee assembled a priority checklist of projects to tackle. First up was the Stadler Room, a meeting room named after founding board member Anne Stadler, who spearheaded the creation of the nonprofit organization nearly 20 years ago to foster community and host events that bring people together.

The room was refreshed with a new, bright coat of paint that will allow more flexible use of the space since the light walls will allow users to use them for projection during meetings. The old floor tiles, which were hard worn after decades of moving tables and chairs back and forth, were replaced with modern carpet tiles for visual interest and sound dampening.

Next up were the much-loved, large, wooden tables that sit at the heart of the Commons. Long a favorite gathering spot of artists, gamers, students, dancers, local community groups, and everyone else, the tables had accumulated a decade-plus of wear and tear on their tops. So earlier this month, they were removed to a nearby space where years of heavy use were sanded down and replaced with a shiny, new finish that’s ready for many more years of love.

Of course, all of this work wouldn’t have happened without the commitment of many wonderful volunteers, as well as a very generous helping of guidance and expertise from the folks at Ace Town Center Hardware. Big thanks go to the board and staff of Third Place Commons who all chipped in time and effort over a long weekend to prep and paint the Stadler Room before the new flooring was installed.

Stadler Room before and after

For the table refinishing job, it was community member Elsa Bouman who partnered with the Commons to spearhead the project. Through Elsa’s dedicated leadership, an amazing volunteer team – including Jason Colberg, Susan Jones, Shasta Miller, Sylvia Portillo, and Lisa Valore – assembled to give of their time and serious sweat equity to make the tables new again!

“It was such a gift to work with Elsa on the tables project,” notes Amy Whittenburg, Executive Director of Third Place Commons. “This project couldn’t have happened without her help in rallying volunteers, identifying project needs, borrowing sanders from generous community lenders, and putting in old fashioned elbow grease.”

Still ahead, Commons staff will be painting the stage floor and getting new carpet as well (hard floors for dancing and carpet for music), then replacing the outdated brown front-of-stage proscenium curtains with new, black ones.

Meanwhile, mall owners Merlone Geier Partners are contributing to the effort as well.

Not only did they donate the storefront space used to refinish the tables, but they’re also getting some new chairs for the Commons that will help update the space and increase seating capacity for the very busy gathering spot.

Third Place Commons is a community-supported, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating real community in real space. It is located at 17171 Bothell Way NE in Lake Forest Park Town Center.

The new $4.5 million investment includes:
  • The 4,700 sq. ft. “Hangar” (named in keeping with Kenmore’s seaplane heritage) is Kenmore’s newest gathering place for casual get-togethers and events. It’s also a great spot for students to do homework and parents to enjoy a relaxing morning or afternoon. It features a double-sided fireplace, comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, computer charging stations and a robust audio visual system and a multi-purpose room that can be reserved.
  • The newest Diva Espresso café is located inside the Hangar where guests can enjoy coffee, tea, baked goods, beer, wine, sandwiches and more.
  • The Town Square is a 12,750 sq. ft. outdoor area surrounding the Hangar. Its features include seating, green space, a water feature, heated, bike racks and a maintenance station plus an electric bike charging station, and other amenities to surprise and delight residents and visitors.

Most of the funding for this project came from proceeds from the sale of the former Kenmore Village properties slated for redevelopment and a State grant secured by the State Legislature’s 46th District delegation.

This project is the latest in a series of downtown revitalization investments made in Kenmore, fulfilling the City’s economic development plan to make downtown Kenmore a walkable destination.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Titans

Titans by Victoria Scott

Astrid's family is falling apart: her grandfather is dead, her father lost his job a few years back, and gambled away all the savings, her older sister is hanging out with a guy who is definitely bad news ...and the rest of her family members seem to be drifting further apart every day.

Then, Astrid gets the chance of a lifetime: the opportunity to ride a Titan --a fabulous mechanical racehorse --and win up to two million dollars.

That's enough money to retrieve the house from mortgage default, and to help Astrid's best friend's family too. But first, she has to race. And then, she has to win.

This book strongly echoed Maggie Steifvater's Scorpio Races; of the two, I think Steifvater's book is better.

But then, I can always be counted on to choose the magical carnivorous horses over the helpful mechanical horses.

Who can blame me?

Having said that, I did love the complete lack of teen romance in Titans. There's a wonderful friendship worthy of celebration, and some nice social commentary.

Excellent racing sequences, great action, very little cussing, and a sweet if somewhat abrupt ending.

If only I could educate authors about the value of riding helmets. Sigh.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern
