Insurance Commissioner: Do you have Earthquake Insurance?

Cadillac Hotel earthquake damage, 2001

Item 113523, Fleets and Facilities Department
Imagebank Collection (Record Series 0207-01)
From the Office of the Insurance Commissioner

Do you have Earthquake Insurance? Do you know what it covers?

How earthquake insurance works
  • It provides coverage if your home is destroyed by an earthquake.
  • It's a separate endorsement you must buy and add to your homeowner or renter policy.
  • You can also buy a stand-alone policy separate from your homeowner policy.
  • It's usually sold with deductibles equaling 10 to 25 percent of the structure’s policy limit.
  • It only pays for damages that exceed the deductible.
  • There may be a separate deductible for contents, structure and unattached structures like garages, sheds, driveways, or retaining walls.
  • Generally, this coverage isn't available to buy for a period of time after an earthquake.
What to expect from insurers

Some earthquake insurers may require an inspection of your property before they'll issue you a policy. They may even have different coverage requirements, such as:
  • The location of your home
  • Your home must be bolted to its foundation
  • The location and bracing of your home's interior walls
  • You must have strapping guards to secure fixtures, such as hot-water heaters
What damage it may cover
  • Landslides
  • Settlements
  • Mudflows
  • Rising, sinking and contracting of earth
What damage it may not cover
  • Floods
  • Tidal waves or tsunamis - even when caused by an earthquake

To see if you're covered or not for these types of damages, talk to your agent or broker and be sure to read your policy.

Celebrate Shoreline, the City's annual party, attracted hundreds of residents to Cromwell Park on Saturday, August 19, 2017.

"Bleach Bear" was one of the groups entertaining from the concert gazebo. At any given time several hundred people were lounging on blankets and chairs, enjoying the music.

The King County Sheriff's Office showed off their heavy equipment and let the kids explore the armoured vehicle.

There were more benign activities for the kids, like pony rides.

Human hamster balls and inflatable slides were free entertainment.

There were bubbles, balloon animals, and fire trucks.

The petting zoo had goats and a wallaby...

...and chickens, and bunnies, and birds...

...and a snake.

Families were thrilled with the event, with many already planning to put it on their calendar for next year.

Local movie co-written by Shoreline resident debuts in September

A movie co-written by Shoreline resident Edi Zanidache is set to have its Seattle premiere September 8th at Ark Lodge Cinemas, 4816 Rainier Avenue S, Seattle 98118.

Northwest-Made "Second Nature" asks what happens when you flip the glass ceiling.

When mayoral candidate Amanda (Collette Wolfe – "Interstellar," "Hot Tub Time Machine") uses a magic mirror to reverse the gender roles in her small town, she gains the upper hand on her womanizing opponent, Bret (Sam Huntington – "Superman Returns," "Sully"). As each experiences life in the other’s shoes, they must decide which reality they prefer before they’re stuck in the flipped world forever.

The film was shot in Ellensburg with an entirely Northwest-based crew and supporting cast.

Shoreline resident
Edi Zanidache
Born in Romania, based in Seattle, Edi Zanidache can be seen performing all over the United States at comedy clubs and theaters, and in Shoreline at Darrell's Tavern.

Scene on the Sound: Tall ship on the Shoreline Sea

Tall ships used to sail into Puget Sound to dock at Upsalady at the north end of Camano Island. There was a lumber town there, where loggers cut the tall trees and prepared them to be masts for the sailing ships.

Ships from all over the world came there for the straight, strong, and tall masts.

Most did not get as far south as the "Shoreline Sea."

Northwest Neighbors Network - empowering people to “Age in Place”

Chess by the sea
Photo copyright Marc Weinberg
Help empower people to “age in place” by volunteering with Northwest Neighbors Network.

Given the opportunity, the majority of people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond would prefer to stay in their homes as they age.

Aside from the expense of assisted living, most people prefer to stay where they feel comfortable and secure.

Fortunately, organizations designed to help people stay in the homes are springing up across the United States. Currently there are approximately 200 “Villages,” made up of volunteers and professionals. The Greater Seattle area has half dozen Villages.

Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN) is working to create a new Village for the Shoreline to South Lynnwood area.

NNN has established its website and an outline of how it wants to proceed. Once it is fully established, the goal is to connect members with one another for social activities and/or support systems to help assist people wanting to stay in their homes by providing such things as rides to appointments, shopping trips, household/yard care, simple home repairs, phone check-ins and more.

NNN needs the help of volunteers to complete their mission and begin accepting members.

This grassroots organization needs people with a variety of skill sets, including fundraising, organizational and public relations. A comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities can be found on their website

If you have questions or offers of help, email NNN

New show at Gallery at Town Center - Sharon Grader and Darlene McLellan

The Gallery at Town Center Presents:
Sharon Grader and Darlene McLellan
August 22 - September 30, 2017

The Gallery at Town Center is exhibiting a selection of works by Encaustic Artist Sharon Grader and Mixed Media Fiber Artist Darlene McLellan, opening August 22, 2017. See these works and the creations of over 90 other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm.

Words Enlighten
Sharon Grader
Sharon Grader

Art and creativity have always been an important part of Sharon Grader’s life. As a professional graphic designer for more than 30 years, she discovered the language of design and how to see as an artist. All of the elements of composition such as shape, line, and color are carried forward into her art.

Since leaving the corporate world, she has unlocked the joy of creating for herself and coloring outside the lines. In 2013, she discovered encaustic painting and fell in love immediately— there was no courtship, just a primal connection to the magical ephemeral quality of molten beeswax.

Exploration and experimentation are major elements of her artistic journey of discovery. She often works with found objects, dyed silk, rusted paper, encaustic monoprinting, watercolor, oil, and pastels. She is fascinated with the creative process and the constant wonder that surprises her everyday.

A constant student, teacher, and advocate for the arts and arts education for all, Darlene McLellan has been a design draftsman for Boeing, a design illustrator for UCSD, and provided scientific illustration for Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla’s publications for deep sea drilling explorations. Her BA in Fine Arts from Washington State University included a year at Nihon Daigaku (University of Japan), Tokyo. Returning to Japan ten years later, her artwork included one-artist exhibits, participation in Yokohama art festivals, and designing for local companies, including sandblasted art-glass doors.

McLellan’s commissioned work is in private and public collections in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Scotland, and Japan. She is a juror, a curator, and exhibits designer and has certification in Museum Studies from the University of Washington. She continues to study embroidery and fiber arts with nationally and internationally recognized historians and designers.

US Air Force Band ensemble at Cromwell Park Wednesday in free concert

CONCERTS IN THE PARK FINALE
THE COMMANDERS JAZZ ENSEMBLE – BIG JAZZ BAND

August 23rd, 6:30pm (rain or shine)
Cromwell Park
18030 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Pack a picnic dinner, gather your family and friends, and come enjoy a free performance by the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West Jazz Ensemble, at Cromwell Park on Wednesday, August 23rd, 6:30pm

This will be our final Concert in the Park this summer!

The Commanders, a newly-revived ensemble coming from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West, carries on the American musical tradition of the great big bands, yet offers a lot more than the big band sounds. This energetic group of highly-trained professional musicians, formed from 18 Airmen, delivers the full gamut of jazz music - traditional jazz, cool, bop, swing, Broadway favorites, and patriotic music. The Commanders offers an entertaining show you won't soon forget!

A typical evening with The Commanders might include favorites from Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie to the sounds of today's modern jazz groups delivered by the group's enchantingly talented vocalist. Their renditions of hot jazz feature rousing improvised solos from every instrument in the group. This is an ensemble capable of delivering a truly unique combination of entertainment.

We’re in for another beautiful night of outside music, so be sure to stay hydrated and try some infused waters at the Aegis Living of Shoreline’s free “Hydration Station.”

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Concerts in the Park are always free and held at various community parks throughout Shoreline and Lake Forest Park on Wednesdays in July and August at 6:30pm (unless otherwise noted), rain or shine. Concerts in the Park are supported by the City of Shoreline, City of Lake Forest Park, 4Culture, Aegis Living of Shoreline, and by Arts Council friends and members.

For more information and details, visit the Arts Council’s website or call 206-417-4645.
