Former Shorewood player pitches victory over Seattle Mariners

Blake Snell, right, pitches for the Tampa Bay Rays
Former Shorewood pitcher Blake Snell was the winning pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays when they beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 Sunday at the Rays' home field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Snell, a 24-year-old left-hander, struck out eight Mariner batters while giving up two hits and two bases on balls in seven shutout innings.

This was Snell's second straight victory after he defeated Toronto Tuesday, August 15, when he struck out seven batters and gave up four earned runs in six innings.

The two victories gave Snell a 2-6 season record after he had been winless in his first 14 starts with the Rays.

Snell had a 6-8 record last season. He has spent part of each season with AAA Durham of the International League.

He had a 9-0 record as a Shorewood senior in 2011, when the Thunderbirds were state 3A runners up.

Dembowski: $700K secured for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park stream projects

Boeing Creek
The King County Flood Control District’s Board of Supervisors has approved $700,000 in Flood Reduction Grants to the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

The funds will facilitate flood control projects that address stream blockages and improve water quality and habitat.

“I am pleased to support funding for these crucial projects that will protect businesses and homes from urban flooding in Boeing and Lyon Creeks,” said Supervisor Rod Dembowski, whose district includes the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
“I am pleased this work will also enable us to remove fish barriers and improve overall water quality in Boeing and Lyon Creeks.”

Entrance to culverts at Innis Arden Way
Shoreline will receive $300,000 to support design and permitting to remove the Hidden Lake Dam and spillway in Shoreline, restoring a section of Boeing Creek, and replacing culverts under NW Innis Arden Way.

The goal is to safely convey creek flood flows and manage sediment through this steep urban watershed to reduce the possibility of catastrophic flooding.

Lake Forest Park will receive $400,000 to remove a culvert that collapsed during a flood, with the debris and sediment falling into Lyon Creek.

The collapsed culvert is in the stream channel and is creating a flood hazard that could impact homes, local businesses, and a state highway. The funds will aid Lake Forest Park in developing plans and securing the necessary permits to remove the collapsed culvert and restore 700 feet of stream channel.

County Councilmember for Shoreline and LFP
Rod Dembowski
The Flood Reduction Grant Program is in its 5th year. It was created to help jurisdictions, school districts, and homeowner associations deal with flooding problems not caused by major rivers in King County.

The King County Flood Control District is a special purpose government created to provide funding and policy oversight for flood protection projects and programs in King County.

The Flood Control District’s Board is composed of the members of the King County Council. The Water and Land Resources Division of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks develops and implements the approved flood protection projects and programs.

New mural created at Celebrate Shoreline

Artist Sara Snedeker in front of partially completed mural

By Diane Hettrick

Local mural artist Sara Snedeker likes to work collaboratively. She has created several local murals using groups of people in her process.

The Shoreline pool mural used art students. The Parkwood street mural used neighbors. The Shoreline Farmers Market mural used market volunteers.

At Saturday's Celebrate Shoreline festival, Sara created a mural using Council of Neighborhood volunteers and random festival-goers.

The mural design features native plants.
It was set up on an easel to guide volunteers.

The mural's theme, inspired by a session Snedeker held with Council of Neighborhood reps, was native plants.

She created the mural design in a poster size version which is set up on an easel. The paints and brushes were ready on a nearby table.

Volunteers choose or were assigned a part of the design, given their colors and set to work.

"Some people paint one section. Others really get into it and spend an hour. It's up to them."

This is the first portable mural she has created. It was set up on a board attached to the back of the baseball backstop and can be relocated as needed.

The Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council was in an adjacent area with related interactive projects for younger children. Northwest Native Plant Steward were on hand to share information about restoration projects in Shoreline parks. (see article about one such project on Saturday)

Toddler survives two story fall - the rest of the story

The toddler fell into a planting bed like the ones
in this photo, directly across from the fire station

By Diane Hettrick

On Friday, August 11, 2017, a three year old boy named Michael fell out of a second story window from an apartment at the Arabella, 17763 15th Ave NE in the North City business district of Shoreline.

He survived with only minor injuries, although he was transported to Children's by a Medic unit to be checked out.

A close friend of the family provided the rest of the story.

Michael's mother has been in a very serious car crash. She has broken ribs, whiplash, and a concussion. Out of town family members are there are assisting her. She is in considerable pain.

Michael had been put to bed, tucked in, and given his last sip of water.

Family didn't realize the window was even opened. It's not their home so no one had any idea he would get up, let alone lean on the screen.

"The windows are super low, and there are no safety locks at all. The only ventilation is by opening a window. Unfortunately they can't just open it and lock it at a two inch space."

Michael leaned against the screen and it popped right out. He fell two stories.

Some of the Arabella windows are right over the sidewalk. His window is over a landing, filled with dirt and shrubbery, and that's what he landed on.

Not only that, the apartment is directly across from the North City fire station. Fire fighters actually saw him fall. They ran across the street and began attending to him immediately.

The very next day, the friend purchased and installed window locks to prevent this from happening again.

Fire departments often try to warn people about the dangers of windows. Screens are not built to resist weight. In this article from Safe Kids Snohomish County, they point out that every hardware store carries locks which can be easily installed to prevent windows from opening accidentally.

The friend wants people to know about this danger and the easy prevention of locks. "No child should be stuck in that situation again."

Update: Shoreline Fire has some window guards for free. They allow the window to open 4 inches and no more.

Open windows hazardous for small children

This article was originally published August 8, 2012

As the temperature increases so does the risk of children falling from windows.

The stories are very much the same -- a child falls from a second story window; the screen gave way or “popped out”.

(See Toddler survives two story)

Six times last week fire department crews throughout Snohomish County responded to reports of toddlers falling from windows. All were transported by paramedics to trauma centers, where fortunately they were to survive with non life-threatening injuries.

Each year approximately 18 children across the United States die from window fall-related injuries and an estimated 4,700 children are sent to hospital emergency rooms.

Safe Kids offers the following tips for parents and caregivers to prevent windows falls:
  • Do not depend on window screens to prevent children from falling.
Screens can easily give way with less than 5 pounds of pressure. They are designed to keep bugs out, not children in.
  • Move chairs, cribs, beds and other furniture away from windows.
Children can fall from windows opened as little as 5 inches.
  • Consider installing window locks or window guards.
Window locks can be easily installed and be removed quickly in case of a fire. They can be found at your area hardware store for around $5 for a pack of two. For a more permanent solution you can also install a Window Guard which can be found at Toys-R-Us and Babies-R-US locations.

Celebrate The Season, Taste The Region
Olympic Peninsula Apple and Cider Festival
October 13-15, 2017

This fall, celebrate the apple season on the scenic, lush Olympic Peninsula. Apples and cider have played an important role in Northwest culture since the earliest settlers arrived to the region, with orchards dating back to the late 1800s.

At the first annual Olympic Peninsula Apple and Cider Festival, celebrate and delight in the traditions and culture of growing apples and brewing cider with a truly authentic Pacific Northwest, tree-to-glass weekend experience. Attendees are welcome to one, two, or all three days of feasting and tasting.
