Rally Friday protested recommendation for maintenance facility in Hamlin Park

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Residents rally against use of Hamlin Park
for Shoreline Maintenance facility

By Diane Hettrick

The Shoreline Public Works department wants to consolidate all its operations in one location. This would include large commercial vehicles, decant, salt and sand for snow and ice operations, dumpsters and bins for bulk materials storage. Also a fuel station and wash facilities for large commercial vehicles.

At the July 31 City Council meeting study item on the topic, staff recommended Hamlin Park.

Hamlin Park lies between 15th NE and Shorecrest / Kellogg schools on 25th. It is forest, rather than a park, full of walking trails, and deeply loved and heavily used by the community.

The sites under consideration were:

1. North Maintenance Facility on 25th NE next to Brugger's Bog. It is deemed to be too small and too close to critical wetlands and a stream.

2.  Ballinger portal. This is land next to the now finished Brightwater portal. It lies on Ballinger Way in the business district and is unused.

3.  Ronald Wastewater on 175th and Linden. Some equipment is kept there now, but the site too small for a consolidated facility.

4.  Keough Park. This is a large and mostly unused park that lies right next to I-5 at about N 167th.

5.  Buying unspecified property in Shoreline.

Not considered was an offer by North City Water District to co-locate at their new property at 155th and 15th NE at the site of the former Northwest Church.

The site plans include space to house facilities for Seattle Public Utilities water in Shoreline, in spite of the fact that negotiations for Shoreline to take over that part of the water district stopped when Mayor Murray was elected in Seattle. See previous article.

The decision is up to the City Council at this point.

Red Cross blood drive at Iora Primary Care on Aug 17

Every 2 seconds in the United States someone needs blood. Volunteers who donate blood through the American Red Cross get the good feeling that comes from knowing they may have helped save a life.

The American Red Cross invites you to help save lives by donating blood at our next lora Primary Care blood drive at Shoreline Office, located in the Meeting Room, at 15214 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133, on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

To schedule an appointment call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the website and enter the Sponsor Code: IoraPrimaryCare.

Get your $5 Target eGiftCard™!*
Come in to donate and as a special thank you for making donation a priority, we’ll email you a $5 Target eGiftCard™. Use it on a purchase of your choice, because you deserve it!

Blood is a perishable, lifesaving product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. Many people assume that other people will donate and blood will always be there when needed.

Unfortunately, less than 38 percent of the American population is eligible to give blood, and only a fraction of those people actually do.

Blood products are used for patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients, and accident and trauma victims. Volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood used for transfusions, and the blood must be there before it is needed in order to help save lives

For more information about eligibility, call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the website

Letter to the Editor: Shoreline falls short of adequate public open spaces

To the Editor:

When compared to most cities Shoreline falls far short of providing adequate public spaces for citizens to enjoy.

Shoreline currently devotes approximately 5% of its land mass to public parks compared to 11% in Seattle, which is about the average of the 44 cities examined in a 2016 Public Library of Science study that concluded “expansive park networks are linked to multiple aspects of health and well-being in cities and positively impact urban quality of life.”

Although the Shoreline parks are fantastic, the lack of park acreage in Shoreline necessitates an increased commitment by City leaders to expand Shoreline’s park network if the quality of life of their constituents is valued as density inevitably increases. This is not more apparent than for residents in Westminster Triangle where the nearest public park is 1.7 miles away.

Shoreline city leaders can begin to remedy this shortfall that is particularly acute in the southwest corner of our city, by introducing a bond measure to purchase the Denny’s lot. In addition to filling a need, think of the impression that would be created with a park for travelers heading north on Aurora Avenue. After slogging north through the ugliness of Highway 99 from Seattle, one of the first things seen traveling into Shoreline would be a beautiful park, perhaps with a spray park, green lawns for picnicking or cyclists needing to take a break. The alternative, supported by City leaders is to fill the lot with a seven story apartment building shielding the future site of a revitalized Aurora Square from view.

If voters are asked to pass a $250 million education bond measure, how absurd is it to propose a 6.5 million dollar bond for the City to purchase the Denny lot? What say you, City Council?

Review by Doug Gochanour
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

It's a cruel irony that when we're young, we often wish to be older, and as we actually become older, we may long to be younger once again. The youthful audience members may relate to many of the stories portrayed here. We older kids can revisit the laughter induced by these humorous cartoon moments.

As a popular comic strip based musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is produced by Aurora Theatre Company, and is part of “Celebrate Shoreline.” It is another success for Director Scott Charles Francis. This free event provides community residents with an opportunity to enjoy excellent live theatre, virtually in their own back yard.

What other theatre venue would encourage its guests to come early and bring picnic food, wine, blankets, and lawn chairs? This is the fourth summer production on the Shoreline City Hall outdoor amphitheatre stage.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy on his doghouse

A bit of Shoreline is transformed into a comic strip appearing stage. It includes a simple background of painted trees, clouds, and the sun. The few, but effective objects include a bench, 4 stools, a baby Baby-Grand piano, and a doghouse. Turning this all into a remarkable production, there are 6 cast members, a live orchestra, and a host of crewmembers to insure that costumes, set, sound, lighting, and every little detail are all just right. Doing this outdoors presents additional challenges. The entire production team is to be commended for their excellent work.

Talented young actors each contribute their skills at dancing, singing and acting to bring the characters to life. Charlie Brown (Brandon Haddix) is suffering from self-doubt, and is searching for happiness that seems to elude him at every turn. He recognizes his lack of achievement in things like flying kites, playing baseball and football, and talking to the girl with red hair.

Lucy (Hannah Knapp-Jenkins) points to Charlie and tells Linus (Noah Bruckshen), “He has a face with Failure written all over it.” When Charlie come to Lucy for 5 cents worth of psychiatric help, she tells him to list all of his faults. If only she had known to suggest positive self-talk, Charlie might have slashed through the unfortunate permanence of negative reinforcement. But that might have ruined the humor of the moment.

Life lessons abound throughout the interchange among characters. Fifty years have gone by since the musical first appeared. It still delights audiences with its whimsical vignettes and character-centric musical numbers. It still aspires to provide laughs and some enjoyable music, with a touch of thought provoking along the way.

Schroeder, his piano, and Lucy

The other characters add a lot of fun to the show. Sally (Kaelyn Barnes) seems like she could become an attorney or a politician, or perhaps a professional rabbit chaser. She offers wisdom and caring for her brother, as well. Schroeder (Phillip Meader Yetter) is in love with playing his piano. Lucy loves to be with him. Snoopy (Karin Terry) demonstrates an instinct for physical comedy, as well as vocal prowess.

Bring the family and come enjoy the fun. Find out if Charlie Brown can find the self-acceptance and the happiness he desires.

Police station construction underway

Police station construction underway

By Diane Hettrick

Every police chief we have had since incorporation has wanted a real police station instead of the converted office building we have. Finally, after 20 plus years, it's happening.

The station is being constructed next to and into Shoreline City Hall, on N 175th.

This photo was taken at the beginning of the week. By the middle of the week, excavation was well underway and the site was a large pit, surrounded by construction equipment.

Drive by and take a look at your new police station to be - going west on N 175th you have to slow for the lights, anyway. Do a little rubber-necking!

Marisa Herrera named Vice President for Students, Equity, and Success at Shoreline Community College

Thursday, August 10, 2017

Dr. Marisa Herrera
VP for Students, Equity, and Success at SCC
Shoreline Community College is pleased to announce Marisa Herrera as the new Vice President for Students, Equity, and Success. The student support position was reenvisioned to better reflect the changing needs of Shoreline students.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Herrera to the Shoreline campus community.
"This important position will assist the College in reaching the next level of our strategic work around inclusive excellence and service to every student,” says Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D., President of Shoreline Community College.

Herrera will be moving on from her role as Executive Director for Community Building and Inclusion at the University of Washington, where she developed diversity and cultural programming as part of her role overseeing the largest college cultural center in the nation. During that time, she was involved in the construction project that yielded a new 25,000-square-foot facility for the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center, the first UW building named after an African American.

She also helped co-establish a dedicated space and support for undocumented students through the Leadership Without Borders program, assisted in the creation of a student food pantry, and served as a member of the Bias Response Task Force to implement a campus online reporting mechanism.

Prior to working at UW, she served as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at Stanford University and Assistant Dean of Students on Semester at Sea, as well as worked in a variety of diversity and student services positions at UCLA, Northern Arizona University, and Arizona State University.

Herrera received her Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California. She has served on several national advisory boards, including the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education, the Association of Black Culture Centers, College Board Native American Student Advocacy Institute, and the Washington State Coalition for HB540 Undocumented Students.

She is engaged in local community work as a commissioner on the City of Seattle Human Rights Commission and Board Secretary for Casa Latina. In 2017, she was awarded the inaugural POC Voices and Visions award by the Evans School of Public Policy and was recognized as a 2015 “Rising Star” by Northwest Asian Weekly Women of Color Empowered Awards.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Shoreline community and can’t wait to get started to kick off the school year,” adds Herrera. “I was incredibly impressed with everyone I met during my time on campus and know that Shoreline is exactly where I am meant to be.”

Herrera will begin in her new role on September 15.

Founded in 1964 with leadership from the Shoreline School District and on land acquired with the help from the Boeing family, Shoreline Community College offers more than 100 excellent academic and professional/technical programs.

PUBLIC HEARING
Ordinance 1157/Adopting Amendments to Tree Regulations

LFP City Council Regular Meeting Thursday, August 10, 2017 7pm

Ordinance 1157/Adopting Amendments to Tree Regulations

Since the adoption of Ordinance No. 1152 earlier this year, there have been issues related to new definitions in the updated tree regulations that are not working in practice as the Administration and Council intended.

The draft ordinance includes amendments that are intended to resolve the issues described. At the July 27, 2017 meeting, the City Council voted to schedule a public hearing for August 10.

Since SEPA and GMA notice requirements have been met, the Council could adopt Ord. No. 1157 after holding the public hearing.

Staff recommend removing the table used to define significant trees and using only the book, Trees of Seattle, 2nd edition by Arthur Lee Jacobson. The book, published in 2006, appears to be out of print.

Flags at half-staff Saturday

Governor Inslee is deeply saddened by the death of Marine Sergeant Dietrich A. Schmieman, 26, and directs that Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff in his memory on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

Sgt. Schmieman was killed in a military plane crash in Mississippi on July 10, 2017.

The Governor’s Office has no objection to agencies lowering the flags at the close of business on Friday, August 11, 2017. Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on August 12, 2017, or first thing Monday morning, August 14.

Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.

A Celebration of Life and Military Honors will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 10:00 am at the Central Church in Richland, Washington.

Please call 360-239-1317 if you have any questions about this flag lowering.

Community forum on sex offenders in Lake Forest Park

By Chief Steve Sutton

Over the past week, the Lake Forest Park Police Department was notified that two level 3 and one level 2 sex offenders have moved into the City of Lake Forest Park.

I would encourage our community to view Offender Watch which is sponsored by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police (WASPC).

For more information about release protocols, definitions on the classifications of registered offenders, and additional public resources go to the Police Department's webpage. The Lake Forest Park Police Department cannot provide additional information beyond that contained within the bulletins on the WASPC website.

In response to this notification, the Lake Forest Park Police Department will be hosting a Community Forum that will include a panel of experts from Washington State and King County criminal justice agencies.

The forum will be held at City Hall on Tuesday September 26th from 7pm-9pm.

More information regarding these offenders and this event will be posted in the near future.
