I really love hydrangeas but the ones I've tried have all died. Only volunteers and things I don't really want thrive in my yard.

Jennifer Rotermund says my cherry tree has three kinds of diseases and is dying. I'm trying to keep my husband from taking a chain saw to it while I figure out what we can salvage from it, particularly considering the deck rail is built around one of the branches.

I have killed so many more things than I have grown... but I still get to enjoy Lee's photos.

For the Birds: What’s Your Name, Little Bird?

Juvenile Junco - How could you not love this face?
Text and photos
by Christine Southwick

Are you seeing strange birds, mostly brown stripy things that don’t look like birds in your bird books?

You could perhaps have a rare bird for this area, but more likely you are seeing juvenile birds that have been born nearby.

Congratulations! You are doing something right for the environment with your yard.

Spotted Towhee juvie
just starting to change coloring
Perhaps you have plants with berries, flowers that attract hummingbirds plus other birds, and water for bird baths.

Majorly important, you have made space for them — either with bird boxes, or trees and bushes for them to rest and to hide in.

And you are not using pesticides which kill the bugs that parent birds feed their young!

How do you learn to identify these young rascals?

Watch — do you see an adult that you do recognize feeding this mystery bird?

Song Sparrow juvie with gape
(colored area around mouth for parental feeding)
Dark-eyed Junco’s, especially the black-headed males, will often be seen feeding their young (the females are most likely on a second brood).

Watch for a flash of white in the outer tail feathers as they fly away — this is what is call a “diagnostic” clue for all local juncos.

Or maybe you see a gorgeous Spotted Towhee around some gawky-looking brownish-rust colored birds.

These birds are larger, and have darker wings and tails than the other funny looking Song Sparrows juvenile(juvie).

Young Red-breasted Nuthatch
How do I get to the food?
These are our year-round resident birds, so they are the ones that you will most likely see and can learn to identify.

There may be other juveniles stopping at your feeders and water spots.

Black-headed Grosbeaks (BHGR) are starting to head South. I saw a female BHGR at one of my feeders yesterday evening, at least I believe it was a female.

Purple Finches will be hard to determine gender — young males don’t show color for a year.

Some warblers may look funny right now through August, if you do get a good look at one. Probably it is another juvie.

Another way to ID a juvie is to watch how it moves and interacts with its environment.

Male Junco feeding juvie
A chickadee on the ground, looking confused? Probably a juvie.

A red-breasted Nuthatch being mystified to the access to a seed feeder? Probably a juvie.

A Pileated Woodpecker with an orange punk head not knowing how to hammer? Probably a juvie.

You are making a difference -- you have living proof in the form of juvenile birds visiting!

Letter to the Editor: POW/MIA flag was promoted by marginal right-wingers

To the Editor:

It’s unfortunate that the Legislature was ever bamboozled into mandating display of the so-called POW/MIA flag.

The flag was promoted by marginal right-wing activists motivated by the “Rambo” fantasy that the Vietnamese government still held American POWs long after the end of the Vietnam War, and that American liberals had conspired to cover this up after causing American defeat in the war by “tying the hands” of the military.

This urban legend has been repeatedly discredited, notably by former POW and now conservative Republican Senator John McCain.

There are no POWs. There have been MIAs in every war this country has fought, and that’s tragic, but it’s not a conspiracy. It’s analogous to the 1920s German legend that Germany was “stabbed in the back” by Jews and liberals, causing Germany to lose World War I. Readers of history know what happened next.

I moved to Washington in 2005 and was dismayed to see the flag flown at Shoreline City Hall. I protested, and was told about the law. It should be repealed.

Celebrations: Anna and Allen love story - 75 years and counting

Anna and Allen Clark 1942
Anna and Allen Clark, residents of Aegis in Shoreline, are celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.

Anna and Allen Clark have a romance unlike anyone else’s. Their love story begins in Pittsburgh at a church banquet. Upon entering the room where the banquet was being held, Allen immediately noticed a young woman seated alone with one chair available next to her.

He also noticed another gentleman was interested, so he claimed the spot before anyone else could. Allen learned that the lovely lady’s name was Anna. The two chatted and Anna gave Allen her phone number. He waited two nights, called to ask her out, and she said yes.

During senior year of college, in 1942 the middle of World War II. Allen was drafted into the Navy and sent to the coding division in Boston. In the first week of May, Allen learned that he could only get one day off, so Anna chose to come up and visit. Allen traded shifts with another incoming officer to get two days off. The two spent the day together and Allen proposed. Upon returning from the two day get away, Allen asked his commanding officer for some days off to get married. He was given three days.

Anna and Allen Clark 70th anniversary party

Since Anna was back home she was in charge of organizing the ceremony. She decided to have their wedding in her family’s living room in Swissvale, Pittsburgh. Anna’s sister and parents, along with Allen’s younger brother, sister, and parents attended. Anna chose the unconventional route and wore a little blue dress and did not have any special decorations. Instead of providing cake for guests, Francis and Mary, two family friends, kindly provided lunch for the occasion.

Anna and Allen have now been married for 75 years and he still pulls out the chair for her. Happy anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Clark.

Old Dog Haven’s 6th Annual Walk for Old Dogs a HUGE Success

Well over 400 people and their dogs strutted their stuff at Old Dog Haven’s Walk for Old Dogs at Cromwell Park in Shoreline on July 23.

The Walk was a fundraiser hosted by Old Dog Haven and over $140,000 was raised by the event!

All of the money raised helps to pay veterinary expenses -- which average about $90,000 per month —for the over 300 senior dogs in Old Dog Haven’s care.

The top three fundraising teams and the top three individual fundraisers led the walk, flags held high as they balanced their prizes while holding leashes.

The top fundraising team — South Paws — raised $28,612 for the dogs and the top individual fundraiser — Peabody Johansen — raised $5,946.

Dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes and mobility enjoyed an afternoon in the park with the people who love them. They competed in contests, had free massages, nail trims, scarfed down goodies from the Seattle Barkery, socialized, met new friends, played in wading pools to keep cool and just loved being there.

Capt. Marvin piloted his way to a 1st Place
in the Costume category
Founders Judith and Lee Piper were recognized for fostering over 375 dogs during the past 13 years.

Foster parents are always needed. Go to the Old Dog Haven website for more information about fostering.

All dogs were eligible to enter contests in the Pageant, which produced winners in the categories of Best Costume, Best Trick, and Best Dancer. Prizes and ribbons were awarded to the top three winners in each category.

Gretchen Howell organized Dachshund Races to benefit Old Dog Haven.

Old Dog Haven is grateful to the community for supporting their efforts, including sponsors for the event, media contacts, people who donated prizes, volunteers, organizers, and everyone who helped make the day such a resounding success.
Paws up to all of you!

Poem: Billy the Goat

Earthcraft goats working at
Richmond Beach Saltwater Park

I'm Billy the Kid and I love to "GO GREEN"
I'll gladly devour what is on the scene
My dad and his friends will be part of the crew
He's WILLIAM THE GOAT did I need to tell you

We're glad to be stationed at such a great place
We'll be here six months so we're not in a race
The Bioswales are our target Vegetation our aim
You may see us grazing--"Nature's Gardeners"  our claim

The bottom of the parking lot  We may be in view
Please NO old tin cans -that we're asking of you
And one thing for certain NO SALT for the greens
It all is provided The SALTWATER theme

So thank you for using Our wonderful crew
There's No Butts about it We love to help you

Reservations reopen Thursday morning for Saturday sailings

The Anacortes/San Juan Islands ferry route resumes its regular Summer 2017 schedule on Saturday, July 29.

A series of boat moves and a vessel repair will bring five boats back to the route on Saturday, July 29, restoring it to full capacity. Passengers can begin making vehicle reservations for this weekend and beyond at 7am on Thursday, July 27. Service was reduced on Wednesday, July 19, due to vessel break down and the lack of an available backup.

“We’re happy to be able to return things back to normal for everyone who relies on us to get back and forth between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands,” said Elizabeth Kosa, chief of staff for Washington State Ferries. “We know the adjusted schedule has been difficult for residents, businesses and tourists and want to thank them for their patience.”

Dembowski donates “retired” King County surplus vanpool vans to local nonprofits

This van was donated to the
Senior Center in 2010
Metropolitan King County Council Vice Chair Rod Dembowski announced that four local organizations will receive retired Metro Transit Vanpool vans to provide transportation assistance for low-income, elderly or young people, or people with disabilities.

“There are so many tremendous nonprofits and organizations serving our community; it’s an honor to help support their work,” said Council Vice Chair Rod Dembowski
“From helping adults with developmental disabilities to providing new opportunities to youth, these ‘retired’ vans are going to provide essential transportation needs in our community for years to come.”

The programs that will be receiving vans are:
  • Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children
  • Parkview Services
  • Urban Native Education Alliance
  • Young Women Empowered (Y-WE)

"We are so grateful for all Councilmember Dembowski does to champion our school and the work we do with deaf and hard-of-hearing children,” Lynessa Cronn, Head of School at Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children in Shoreline.
“Thanks to King County, and the donation of this van, we are accessing the resources we need to serve a growing number of students while also providing each of them with transformative educational experiences throughout our community."

The vanpool program provides mobility for a diverse array of King County residents, supports the positive work of various local organizations, and relieves traffic congestion by reducing the need for single-occupancy vehicles.

"Transportation is critical for Parkview Group Home - it's how our residents are able to access their community,” Marc Cote, Executive Director, Parkview Services. “We are grateful to King County Metro for their holistic understanding and support for inclusive communities."

Interested organizations in King county District 1 can contact the Councilmember for more information on applying for a vehicle in future grant cycles.

Previous van donations have gone to Parks, Senior Center, Veterans' Center, Hopelink. Provail, Turning Point, and others.

City of Lake Forest Park receives Distinguished Budget Presentation award

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of Lake Forest Park for its 2017-2018 biennial budget.

The award represents a significant achievement. It reflects the commitment of the City to meeting the highest principles in governmental budgeting.

In order to receive the budget award, the City must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan, and as a communications device.

This new budget document was created by staff in order to provide transparent and meaningful budget information to our taxpayers.

This latest award, coupled with last year’s Stewardship Award from the State Auditor’s Office, highlights the City’s effort to be on the leading edge of financial transparency.

In The Garden Now … Rambling Rose Kiftsgate

Kiftsgate Rose

Text and photos by Victoria Gilleland

This has been a spectacular year for Rambling ‘Kiftsgate’ Rose. The clusters of white flowers are the size of beach balls and the honey scent is incredible.

The flower is the size of
a beach ball
Visiting gardeners have had difficulty identifying this flowering behemoth and several thought it might be some sort of Climbing Hydrangea ... on steroids. It’s definitely a rare sighting!

Maybe it was the rainy months we had last fall and winter. Who knows? But we’ve never seen a flower display like this before.

The rose is growing on a 30 foot wide trellis which is 10 feet tall. As you can see from the photo our trellis is engulfed by Kiftsgate and flowers tower another 8-10 feet above and extend another 8 or 10 feet east over the patio.

Canes will easily shoot 15 to 25 feet in a single growing season so pruning is essential to keep it in bounds. Kiftsgate has wicked large thorns that my husband and son have been known to attack with a machete. Unless you have unlimited space, Kiftsgate will need to be pruned very heavily right after bloom.

The trellis is 10 feet tall
Kiftsgate blooms once in early summer for about six weeks. After that summer blooming, clematis climb the rose canes to put on a summer display of color.

In the fall what were once clusters of white flowers become orange red rose hip berries that brighten the fall and winter garden. There is year round garden interest.

If you have a very large space, a sturdy structure, and are not afraid of pruning, this vigorous rambling rose is worth consideration.

But be realistic. When I saw it growing in the UK several years ago at Kiftsgate Gardens it appeared to have covered a group of trees and an area at least half the size of a soccer field. Think about that!

(Botanical Name:  Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’)
