Shoreline City Council affirms support for principles of Paris Climate Accord

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

On June 19, the City Council passed a resolution affirming the City’s support for the principles of the Paris Climate Accord. The goals of the Paris Climate Accord are in alignment with the City’s environmental sustainability goals, and the City Council affirms that climate change is occurring and has accelerated due to human activity.

The City’s Climate Action Plan, adopted by the Council in 2013, has a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Shoreline by 50 percent below 2007 levels by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050.

The United States, along with 195 other nations, entered into the Climate Accord in 2015 with the goal of holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this, the United States pledged to cut emissions between 26 and 28 percent compared with 2005 levels by 2025.

The withdrawal of the United States from the Climate Accord has been met with disappointment from many local and state governmental entities, along with concerns from many corporations, the scientific community, and from countries around the world.

Many organizations are signing onto letters expressing their support for the Climate Accord. The City has partnered with King County and many other jurisdictions to coordinate and enhance climate action efforts.

Council’s Resolution also provides direction to the Mayor to sign onto the ‘We Are Still In’ and ‘#Cities4Climate’ initiatives, which are national efforts affirming and supporting the Paris Climate Accord.

ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), the World Wildlife Federation, Climate Mayors, C40, Urban Sustainability Director’s Network, and other sustainability organizations are coordinating the We Are Still In coalition. The other effort, #Cities4Climate, is an initiative of the National League of Cities (NLC), of which Shoreline is member, and includes the ability to sign onto a letter embracing the principles of the Paris Climate Accord.

Complete Eats helps Washingtonians afford healthy foods

The Department of Health and Safeway Kicked-Off Complete Eats today, a program that makes fruits and vegetables more affordable for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program customers.

Complete Eats rewards customers who purchase fruits and vegetables with SNAP benefits (formerly called Food Stamps) with coupons and rebates.

“We are pleased to partner with Safeway to help our most vulnerable kids and families get fresh, accessible and healthful foods,” said John Wiesman, Secretary of Health. “Complete Eats exemplifies how much we can achieve when government and private industry work together.”

Shoppers at Safeway who buy at least $10 worth of qualifying fruits and vegetables using their SNAP card and their Safeway Club Card receive a coupon for $5 off their next purchase.

Choose to Reuse

You are invited to the Choose to Reuse event, Saturday, June 24 -- where your unwanted household items you thought about taking to the dump may now find a new home!

This event is designed to divert goods from the waste stream and make them available to neighbors and non-profits who can use them.

Heard the saying, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!? Not only can you bring down unwanted household items, but you can pick up items to reuse or repurpose!

You do not have to drop something off to pick something up. This event is not a swap meet!! Choose to Reuse is hosted by the City to facilitate the exchange of usable items to reduce waste and encourage reuse and repurpose.

Review the list for acceptable items you can bring to the event. All items must be in good working order. If the item is accepted, someone will have the opportunity to bring it home to reuse or repurpose.
  • Accepted:  gardening tools, toys, books, barbeques, hobby supplies, artwork, electronics
  • Not Accepted:  large appliances, bathtubs, pianos, televisions, computers, propane tank
  • See the complete list
Items are intended for free reuse/repurpose and not for resale or person profit. Take only what you or your non-profit need. If you are interested in reselling items, comeback at the END of the day to see what is left. For additional information call 206-957-2814.

Saturday, June 24, 2017, 10am - 2pm, City Hall - Parking Lot, 17425 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

FOUND: Washington's Most Wanted: Roo the dog

Ryan and Roo back together
UPDATE: Tuesday 8:45pm  Roo has been found! His owner is at the vet now with him.

He says he got a call from two men who had seen the posters he put up in the neighborhood on 179th and spotted Roo hiding in the bushes.

He does have some injuries. More info to come.

Original story

Tuesday 12:44pm
David Rose, Q13 Host / Executive Producer of Washington's Most Wanted, has taken up the case of a missing Shoreline dog.

Of course it's a little more than that.

Shoreline Police say burglars broke into Roo's Shoreline home Saturday on 16th Ave NE and stole a handgun, social security card, and about $100 in cash.

When the owners returned, they also found their dog 'Roo' was missing. The burglars left the back door and gate open so it is unknown if they stole 'Roo' or if he is lost somewhere in the Shoreline area.

Roo was lost and frightened after

He has all of his tags with his name and his owner's phone number. If you spot him, please call 911 or his owner, Ryan, at 425-773-7349.

Ryan says they were two possible sightings Saturday evening on 15th Ave and 179th. 'Roo' was very frightened so it's best not to approach him.

Call and follow his movements if possible until help arrives.

If you have any information about the burglars, who are described only as a male and female, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or use the P3 Tips App on your phone.

There is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

And Ryan would love to have his dog back home.

SCC President Roberts presents Ken Noreen with President's Award for Distinguished Service

President Cheryl Roberts honors Ken Noreen
SCC President Cheryl Roberts’ Commencement Remarks about Ken Noreen

Commencement ceremonies have a long tradition of using music to help formally mark this occasion. Music helps us celebrate this important milestone!

The “Pomp and Circumstance” processional music you heard as the ceremony began is something we immediately associate with commencement exercises.

And we are so lucky to have the talented Shoreline Concert Band here today to uphold that important tradition.

Our Concert Band is made up of both students and area community members, and is directed by Ken Noreen.

Ken has served as an associate professor and concert band director at Shoreline for the last 23 years! And, this is his final Commencement directing Shoreline’s Concert Band.

Ken began his start as a teacher in the Shoreline School District, and dedicated 24 years as the band director at Shorecrest High School. He is a beloved educator, talented musician, and is very well-known all around Shoreline.

He wisely once said, “A note is just a note, until a musician breathes some of their life into it. The more life experience a musician has, the more they have to put into the music.”

And Ken certainly has earned a wealth of life experience. In addition to his long teaching career, Ken has been an active advocate for the arts.

Ken has also served on the Shoreline Community College Foundation Board of Directors for many years, including serving as past President and currently as Secretary. He and his wife Pearl were also recipients of the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award. You know we couldn’t honor and celebrate you without your wonderful wife at your side!

It is for all of these reasons that I present the President’s Award for Distinguished Service to Ken Noreen.

Ken, on behalf of the College and the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank you for your many years of dedication to Shoreline Community College and to the students you have helped to grow and learn.
Please accept this award as our symbol of our deep gratitude and care for you. You have been such a gift to all of us! With a heart full of appreciation! Thank you!

The City of Lake Forest Park has been working with King County Metro on a project to install historic photo murals in bus shelters within Lake Forest Park.  Over the last few days, King County Metro crews installed the murals in the six shelters.

Potential B&O tax for Shoreline businesses - workshops Wednesday and Thursday

The City of Shoreline is considering implementation of a B/O tax on local businesses.

Business Outreach Workshops
The City of Shoreline will hold two workshop sessions to provide information on the City’s financial forecast and budget.

We encourage City of Shoreline businesses to attend and look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Workshop dates:
  • Wednesday, June 21 from 5:00 – 7:00pm
  • Thursday, June 22 from 11:00am – 1:00pm
  • Location: City of Shoreline Council Chambers, City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N

The City of Shoreline, like most cities in Washington, faces a structural imbalance in funding core operations, where the cost of maintaining services is growing faster than the revenues available to support them.

In 2014, the City Council developed a 10 Year Financial Sustainability Plan that identifies seven strategies to help achieve financial sustainability over the 10 Year forecast.

Five of the seven strategies have been implemented, and the City forecasts sufficient revenues through 2021, primarily relying on a voter-approved levy lid lift that expires in 2022.

One of two remaining strategies to be implemented is engagement of the business community regarding the potential implementation of a business and occupation (B/O) tax.

For more information, contact Administrative Services Director Sara Lane, 206-801-2301.

Shoreline Arts Festival - Performance Preview and After Hours Fun

Monday, June 19, 2017

The Shoreline Arts Festival offers two stages of live music and dance playing all weekend long, and you can see it all without spending a dime!

So sit back, relax, maybe grab a cold beer from the Beer Garden or a tasty treat from the Food Truck Food Court, and be entertained by an array of performances spanning a wide range of styles.

Here’s a preview of what the festival has to offer on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

The Winterlings
With songs as vivid as feature films, Seattle indie-folk duo The Winterlings take listeners on unexpected journeys soaring with astronauts, hitchhiking in Alaska, fighting beside a female Civil War soldier, and walking deeper into the forest of human existence.

Marina Christopher
Marina Christopher is a talented bassist, vocalist, composer and educator in the local Seattle scene. After achieving a BA in Classical Double Bass performance at Central Washington University, her career in the Seattle scene has been very successful.

Aaron Shay
His foot-stomping songs showcase a unique brand of lyrical craftsmanship, as well as an affinity for literature, technology, and science fiction. With an earnest and charismatic style of performance, Shay blends his songs with storytelling, instigating upbeat sing-alongs that leave audiences delighted and inspired.

Mariachi Guadalajara
It is a tradition that can be defined by eight socio-musical elements: mariachi instrumentation and texture, musical genres and subgenres, performance methods and styles, singing styles and forms, dance styles, performative space, performance clothing, and the word "mariachi".

Mr. Feelgood and The Firm Believers
Since late 2012, Bellingham, Washington’s Mr. Feelgood and The Firm Believers have developed at a blinding pace into an incredibly distinct, newfangled sound. With humanity’s best intentions always in mind, the group spreads their pure happiness and love with a vigorous, get-up-and-move energy with a sound that is unlike any other.

Roemen and The Whereabouts
Roemen and The Whereabouts came together at the beginning of 2012. All 4 guys had played together, and apart, in different bands of all different styles from rock to jazz and from country to pop. Inspired by the recent rise of acts like Mayer Hawthorne and Fitz and The Tantrums as well as the love for the classics like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, this band sets out to do just that.

Fysah has collaborated with Gary Shider and Steve Cropper and has since released three albums, the most recent one titled “Another Life.”

Jason Kertson

In 2013, Jason auditioned for “The Voice” Season 5 and had a five minute on air segment. In December 2013, Duff McKagan of Guns n’ Roses contacted Jason and asked if he would play guitar in the Pink Slips, a band that his daughter Grace was forming. They performed together for the first time in Seattle on New Year’s Eve 2013 and recorded an EP in 2014. Jason has also performed with his own Seattle area band for the past five years. He already has over 100 original songs to his credit.

Critical Distance

The W Lovers

Fleur and Wesley Wood have made their mark on the live music scene all over the American West, with more than 300 live shows since their inception in 2014. Based in Washington State and friends of the road, touring has taken them from Washington to Colorado and through New Mexico, California and Oregon over the summer months this year.

Sundae + Mr. Goessl

A delightful throwback to a time when music was the entertainment, Sundae + Mr. Goessl perform a wide variety of “Vintage Jazz”. With Sundae’s sparkling personality, she almost reaches out to grab the audience as she sings and the banter between songs is pure hilarity. Mr. Goessl’s impeccable jazz guitar work is nothing short of incredible and although he doesn’t talk, he speaks to the listeners through his instrument.

Billy Brandt w/ the Thing n Stuff Band

Billy Brandt w/ the Thing and the Stuff Band’s music has working class appeal that radiates masculine charm and chutzpah. A voice like dark roasted coffee with a hint of cream and a band as sweet as the cube of sugar. His original music speaks to everyman themes of love, loss and possibility, reflecting a depth of influences from Ray Charles and Lou Rawls to Frank Sinatra and Mose Allison.

Musical Instruments for needy Shoreline kids

David Endicott collecting instruments
at a previous Arts Festival
You can bring that “lovingly used” violin, flute or other musical instrument to this weekend’s Shoreline Arts Festival and put it back into play through Music4Life.

Instrument donations will be accepted by representatives of Music4Life™ who will be at the south entrance of the Shoreline Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Music4Life provides musical instruments to participating schools for students in need.

The Seattle-based non-profit acquires instruments from adults who no longer need them, gets them repaired (if possible) and then provides them to participating public school districts for use by students in need.

Besides Shoreline Public Schools, Music4Life also operates programs supporting Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Mukilteo and Seattle Public Schools. The program acquires used instruments from those who understand that their highest and best use is to put them back into play.

Music4Life also accepts donations to help pay for instrument repairs.

“This Music4Life partnership with the Shoreline Arts Festival is a tremendous opportunity to connect with the musicians and the arts audience attending the festival,” says David Endicott, Music4Life Co-Founder and President/COO.
“Festival organizers invited us to be at the event and we eagerly agreed.”

Music4Life enjoys the support of notable music advocates and other community leaders.

Gerard Schwarz, world-renowned conductor laureate of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, has endorsed the program, saying, “This wonderful program begins with children in elementary school at a time when, if they’re interested and talented in any way, they have the greatest chance of success.
"Many people tell me of the impact that direct knowledge of instrumental music has had on their lives. We intend to give this advantage to all our children.”

Music4Life™ is supported in part by grants from the Hazel Miller Foundation, First Choice Health; 4Culture (the former Seattle-King County Arts Commission); the Knossos Foundation; various local Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs; the Highline Schools Foundation; as well as by the law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer; Seattle Symphony Orchestra; the Folklife Festival; Rafael Carrabba Violins; Seattle Music Partners; the Newspapers in Education Program of The Seattle Times; Lamar Advertising; Encore Media Group; GMA Research; Cascade Symphony Orchestra; Randy Oxford Entertainment; the Edmonds Center for the Arts; Kennelly Keys Music stores; Hammond Ashley Violins in Issaquah; Donn Bennett Drums; Emerald City Guitars; Ted Brown Music; Bischofberger Violins; Olsen Violins; InMove and others.

For more information or to donate an instrument to Music4Life, contact info@Music4Lfe.org , call 206-409-3275 or go to the website. Instrument donation forms are available online, as well as at designated instrument drop-off sites.

Cats: Ghost with Fangs

Best fangs ever!

Who is grey, adorable, and has the best fangs you've ever seen in your life?

Ghost of course! Ghost is 8 years old, and is probably the most cuddly kitty you've ever met.

And did we mention that he has fangs? That's right, fangs that constantly stick out of his mouth that Count Dracula himself would be jealous of.

Ghost was surrendered to SAFe Rescue back in February where he has been receiving the medical care he needs (subcutaneous fluids everyday, and a special diet) and now he is ready to steal your heart and make his way into your home.

He will still need those subcutaneous fluids every day (for kidney problems) but he takes them well and his favorite thing to do afterwards is cuddle.

The staff at the rescue nicknamed him "Ghosty Whosty Cinnamon Toasty" because he is sweet like cinnamon and will you keep you all warm and toasty on those cold Seattle nights.

Meet Ghost at Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline, 14717 Aurora Ave N, 98133. 206-659-6220.

Pack the Park fun run raises over $9,200 for Friday Food Packs

Volunteer crew at Pack the Park

By Silje Sodal

On Saturday, June 3rd, over 430 participants gathered at the Lake Forest Park Town Center to kick off the second annual Pack the Park family fun run to benefit the Friday Food Packs program.

This essential program, organized through the LFP Presbyterian Church, serves over 100 students at Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary Schools by providing weekend food bags.

Presenting the check to the Friday Food Packs program

Over $9,200 was raised to serve our most vulnerable students – nearly half of the program’s annual budget!

While free and reduced breakfast and lunch options are available at public schools during the week, low-income and homeless students often experience food insecurity over the weekends.

At the finish line
Every Friday, students are discreetly given a bag of food containing easy to prepare foods which is then tucked into their backpacks and brought home.

This five year-old program strives to provide the nourishment these students need so that they can begin to experience success academically, developmentally and socially.

With proceeds from last year’s event, the Friday Food Packs program expanded its efforts and began partnering with Shorecrest High School.

With funding from this year’s event, the program intends to deepen its outreach at existing partnering schools and explore partnerships with other neighborhood schools.

Community Engagement Coordinator Leslie Eck said, “I am humbled by the support from our community and the Brookside and Lake Forest Park PTAs for the Friday Food Packs program…
"Thanks to everyone who worked on this event and who came out and participated - you are helping us to change the outcome for so many kids in our schools.”

An additional incentive to participate came from the friendly competition between the two elementary schools. The school with the highest number of registrations takes home the Spirit Cup, and this year Lake Forest Park Elementary took the trophy home to display until next year.

Principal Aimee Miner congratulations LFP kids

The Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary School PTAs coordinated extensively over the last six months to recruit sponsors, secure permits and organize the event.

Special thanks to Mayor Jeff Johnson, LFP Council Member Semra Riddle, Shoreline School District Superintendent Rebecca Miner, School Board Directors David Wilson and Debi Ehrlichman and State Representative Gerry Pollet for their participation and support.

Principals Simard and Miner
Thanks also to our wonderful community sponsors:

Finally, thanks to the food trucks Street Donuts and Vet Chef for providing sustenance to our runners!

Stay tuned for details about the 2018 Pack the Park fun run!
