Learn About Community Efforts to Create an Urban Forest Park with Trails

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) invites the community to join us for “A Walk to 5 Acre Woods Event” at 10:30am on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

The month’s event features a bird walk and talk by Ben Pedigo. Ben is a Lake Forest Park native and birding enthusiast who is an active member of the University of Washington’s Birding Club.

Ben will lead a bird walk on the way to the woods, so bring your binoculars and bird guides and join the fun. Learn about the feathered residents of our urban forest and how to recognize their songs. Families are welcomed and encouraged. We will also provide updates on the latest progress for the project.

The 5 Acre Woods site is the largest remaining mature forest within the area. It includes a wetland, a tributary of Lyon Creek, and serves as an important wildlife corridor.

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF), a community based nonprofit association, advocates strongly for the City of Lake Forest Park to purchase this property to develop an urban forest park with trails.

The Foundation has spearheaded grant writing and fundraising activities to assist the City toward meeting that goal.

Community matching funds for those grants are key to successful acquisition of the land.

If you would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, contact Brad Keefe (keefeba@gmail.com) to donate, pledge or volunteer for fundraising.

Seattle Public Utility, the current property owner, plans to sell the property later this summer, so community support for the project is critical to our success.

Meet in front of the Lake Forest Park Elementary School, 18500 37th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park – parking available in the school parking lot, and proceed along the pedestrian walkway on 40th Place NE, to take a short walk to 5 Acre Woods.

Refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk courtesy of Honey Bear Bakery and the Seattle Green Space Coalition

The walk will occur rain or shine at 10:30am on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

Remember to save the date for the July 8, 2017 walk featuring wetland biologist Sarah Cooke, who will speak about the importance of wetlands. See the 5 Acre Woods Facebook page for more information.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Lisa Pedigo.

Ask the Bird Lady: is that a crow dive-bombing the hawk?

Red-tailed hawk in tree, crow in air

A reader asks:

In this photo you previously identified the red-tailed hawk in the tree. My question: is that a crow dive-bombing the hawk to make it go elsewhere??"

Christine Southwick responds:

Crows will mob any raptor. If you hear a large loud group of crows, look to see where they are congregated.

Crows will form in "globs" and harass any raptor, usually hawks and owls. If you watch to see where they are dive-bombing the detected "enemy" (although crows are also nestling robbers) you may well find an owl that you would not otherwise see.

Most owls don't move, they just ignore the pests until the crows get tired and find something else to annoy.

Hawks will usually move to another tree, which you can tell by the crow chorus changing into a crescendo.

It is worth taking the time to check out the action, the next time you hear a crow mob.

Frank Workman on Sports: My High School Sports Moment of the Year

Lauren Block is running in second place in the 800
but starting to gain on the leader.
By Frank Workman

It happened on a bright sunny August morning. The Shorecrest Cross Country team was having their first on-campus workout, following two days of jogging the hills in Kenmore's St. Edwards Park.

After some stretching and light jogging up a slight incline, the coaches gathered the fifty-some boys and girls and explained that day's workout.

It would consist of ten half-mile loops, with breaks between each loop, to be run at the same steady clip every single time. The aim was for the runners to find a pace they were comfortable with and sustain it each time around. Fluctuations in times were bad - consistency was good.

At no time, the coaches stressed, should this turn into a competition. The day's workout was solely to help each runner establish his or her own steady pace. Simple enough.

The runners took off on their first loop of the season. Across a 75-yard stretch of grass they went, through a gate, then counter-clockwise around the outer perimeter of the football field, behind the batting cages, then back again to the starting point.

Lauren Block crossing the finish line
Four or five of the boys first made their way through the gate, with that same 75-yard stretch to complete their initial run.

Then the first two girls reached the final straight-away. Stride for stride, shoulder to shoulder the two were.

Neither seemed to acknowledge each other's presence, yet they knew full well the other was right there.

Each girl had a certain look in her eye, a determination, that said 'I'm not going to lose'. Their bodies were straining to beat the other, in spite of trying to make this first run appear effortless. Neither runner gave an inch down the stretch. Call it a tie.

The band wasn't playing. There were no cheerleaders, pompoms, parents, or announcers.

But it was the very essence of competition, why we watch  and love sports.

Two great athletes, their stars on the rise.

Those who saw it just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Lauren Block, left, and Lilly Visser
The girls, Lauren Block and Lilly Visser, were about to be sophomores. As freshmen the previous spring, they had scored points at the State Track Finals, pitching in to help the Scots win the 2A State Championship.

This past fall, the two went on to lead the Scots to a third place team finish at the 3A State Cross-Country Finals. Lilly finished 14th and Lauren was 19th.

With the spring came another track season. Both girls continued to run the 1600 and 3200 meter races for the most part.

But girls from other schools in the District were clearly better than them and would gobble up the precious berths to the lState Finals.

With Lilly having the best shot at cracking the top four in the 1600 and 3200, she pressed on.

Lauren's coaches suggested she try her hand (and feet) at some shorter races. Open-minded and coachable, she ran a few 400's and some 4-by-400 meter relays. She dabbled in the 800, with enough success to qualify for the District meet.

She ran well in her prelim, qualifying for the District Finals two nights later.

In the finals, she rounded the last turn trailing the leader by a couple strides with 90 yards to go. As the track straightened out, she found another gear.

There was a familiar look in her eye .... the same one that was seen back in August. She wasn't going to lose.

She passed the leader with forty yards to go and won the 800 by two strides, going away.

Lauren in #1 position. Teammate Livia Glascock finished 4th
Shorewood's Rachel Hansen was fifth..
It came time for the announcer to introduce the top eight finishers in the race. After he'd named places 8 through 2, he took just a second to look back at the lone girl yet to mount the victory stand.

He saw a girl beaming so broadly, it caused a lump to form in his throat.

He quickly gathered himself and turned to face the crowd.

And he introduced Lauren Block as the District Champion in the Girls 800 Meter Run.

THAT was my favorite high school sports moment of the year.

The Running Man's inspirational autobiography is at Third Place Books

Lamont Thomas, holding his newly published autobiography

By Diane Hettrick

Everyone who drives Richmond Beach Road has seen him. A man with an odd gait, dressed in a sports jersey and shorts, jogging along the street.

From Aurora, down 185th, Richmond Beach Road, all the way to the water - and back again. 84 miles a week, every day, no matter the weather.

Lamont in his favorite jersey
People call him "The Running Man". Some honk, some wave. Others just wonder about him.

Not everyone knows that he is in horrific pain. He was hit by a car when he was a toddler and his body was broken.

He has had surgeries and a body cast. More than once, doctors told him he would not be able to walk unassisted - or at all. He was determined to prove them wrong.

So he didn't just walk - he ran.

He ran through injuries and shredded hip joints. He ran through recovery from surgery and back pain. Now he runs with scoliosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

He has a day job - 13 years now with the same employer. He is kind and friendly and determined.

His book is in stock at Third Place Books in LFP, 206-366-3333
And now he is telling his inspirational story.

His autobiography, The Running Miracle, is published and available for purchase, both online and locally.

The Running Miracle is in stock at Third Place Books, upper level Town Center, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, 206-366-3333.

His book is published.

He has been the subject of two feature stories in the Los Angeles Times.

His Facebook page has 2500 Likes.

The Running Man is entering a new chapter of his life.

Update: Lamont tripped over a curb on his daily run and broke a femur, which required surgery. He is in a wheelchair while he heals. He will not be able to work for three months. There is a GoFundMe page to help with his living and medical expenses.

Recipe and community dinner

Asparagus
Patty Pan's June community dinner will be serving a meal inspired by North African flavors this month:

Spring Vegetable Tagine (vegetarian and omnivore), Couscous Pilaf,
Radishes with Dukkah,
June Salad with Fig and Orange Dressing,
Sesame Cookies.

Good food, good neighbors, and the weather should be perfect. More information here.

First Monday of every month
June 5, from 5:30 to 7:30pm
Patty Pan Grill Cooperative,
15550 27th Ave NE.

And here's a recipe from Patty Pan's owner, Devra Gartenstein

Asparagus with Mustard-Dill Sauce
Yield: 4 servings
I think about this recipe all winter, as I look forward to spring. It only takes 20 minutes to prepare.

1 quart water
1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut in 2-inch lengths
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard (preferably seeded)
1/2 teaspoon salt
black pepper to taste
juice of 1/2 lemon

1. Boil the water in a medium-size saucepan and blanch the asparagus for about 15 seconds. Drain and run them under cold water for a minute.

2. Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Add the garlic and cook on low heat for a minute or two. Turn off the flame, add the dill, mustard, salt, pepper, and lemon, and mix well.

3. Toss the asparagus with the sauce, and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Note: If you bend the stem end of a stalk of asparagus, it will break at precisely the point where it's tender enough to eat. When working with a bunch of asparagus, you don't have to bend every piece individually. Just do one or two, and that will give you an idea of where to cut the rest.

Ceremony of Awareness for the 93 gun deaths per day in the United States

93 volunteers represent the 93 lives lost to gun violence daily

On June 2nd and 3rd, thousands of Americans wore orange to send the powerful message that there is more we can do to end gun violence.

Locally, Shoreline Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America held a Ceremony of Awareness at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park on Saturday, June 3.

We assemble as a visible demonstration of the daily toll taken by gun violence in the US: an average of 93 lives are lost to firearms every day.

Rep. Ruth Kagi spoke
The program included poetry read by Kristen NyQuist and a personal story about gun violence from Paul Kramer.

Jennifer Widrig reflected on 93 deaths a day.

Rep. Ruth Kagi spoke about common sense gun legislation. She has introduced a bill that would regulate safe storage of guns and ammunition in the owners' homes.

In the Ceremony of Awareness volunteers each took a space to represent the 93 gun deaths per day in the USA. When all were assembled, a bell tolled 93 times, once for each life lost.
The nuns and students of Buddha Jewel Zen Monastery in Shoreline chanted the Heart Sutra.

Ian Taylor, local lead of Shoreline Moms Demand, spoke about why the gathering was being held, "why we do this work; the future we want, and the work that remains."

Ian Taylor talked about the work to be done.

Moms Demand Action is a national group, with chapters in every state.

What started as a single Facebook page has grown into a nationwide movement.
In the past year, moms have taken on Starbucks for allowing customers to carry concealed, loaded guns in its stores—and won.
They called on Facebook to crack down on illegal gun sales on its platform—and won.
And they’re calling on state and national lawmakers to enact common-sense gun laws that will protect our kids.

Search continues for King County Library Director

Shoreline Library
The search for a permanent Director for the King County Library System has begun.

The KCLS Leadership Team met on May 22 to refine the criteria for the candidate search, discuss retention of a search firm, and develop a tentative timetable for process milestones.

Staff will be able to build on information and material that was previously gathered in order to attract a diverse candidate pool. It is expected that the process will take anywhere from six to nine months.

Currently KCLS Foundation board member Stephen A. Smith is interim director after Gary Wasdin, hired after a nationwide search, left after two years in a negotiated resignation for "violating the library's code of conduct".

The previous director, Bill Ptacek, served in that position from 1989 to February 2014, when he left to be CEO of the Calgary Public Library in Alberta, Canada. The Director before Ptacek headed KCLS from 1962 to 1988.

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System operates 48 libraries, with an annual operating budget of $94 million and 1,300 staff. Recognized in 2011 as Library Journal’s Library of the Year, KCLS is one of the largest and busiest library systems in the country.

KCLS includes libraries in Richmond Beach, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore.

Theater review: Crossing Delancey - romantic comedy and Jewish grandmothers make an entertaining experience

Crossing Delancey

The Phoenix Theatre
June 2 - 25, 2017

Review by Doug Gochanour
Photos courtesy Phoenix Theatre

Izzy Grossman finds herself in a pickle over romantic interests.

Crossing Delancey is a popular romantic comedy that relates well with this time of year. Graduations and weddings seem to imply a stepping up to new levels of life challenges. It may be by entering the next appropriate level of learning, or entering a new career, or finding and developing a romance with a prospective life partner. It is a time for being open to new adventures, presented to us by the universe.

Izzy is not thrilled with the plans for her love life
Movie buffs may recall the 1988 movie version, featuring Amy Irving as Izzy. This Phoenix Theatre presentation gives us an opportunity to experience the fun of Crossing Delancey on stage, with a wonderful cast to bring it all to life. Theatre lovers rejoice!

Erica Bergman is outstanding as Izzy, a thirty-something single, who is living alone in a rent-controlled, smallish West Side apartment.

She regularly visits her grandmother, Bubbie, who lives in a Lower East Side apartment. Cindy Giese French as Bubbie, plays a traditional Jewish grandmother, who worries about single Isabelle living alone. You know she will try to fix that situation. It is in her job description to interfere and control.

Izzy is actually doing pretty well, for being on her own. She enjoys working in an upscale, independent bookstore, and she is gaining prestige along with the store. Izzy’s position allows her to cozy up to a number of local authors, and she likes being a part of that intellectual scene.

Romance with a pickle seller?
Izzy fancies herself romantically involved with author Tyler Moss, (Phillip Keiman). Her attraction to Tyler blinds her to his real motivation and character.

Unfortunately, Moss is more attracted by her physical beauty than by her mind. It would seem that some men are thinking of sex when they talk to a pretty girl, no matter how their words may flatter her intelligence. Who would have thought?

A determined Bubbie hires Hannah Mandelbaum (Dawn Cornell), her matchmaker friend, to find a "good catch" for Izzy.

After initial reluctance, Izzy agrees to give it a try. She is introduced to pleasant and unassuming Sam, perfectly played by Boyd Morrison. Sam runs his own pickle stand on the Lower East Side.

Izzy does not believe she could have anything in common with a pickle man. She still considers herself to be more intellectual than a Lower East Side merchant.

Don't they make a cute couple!
Izzy is pleasantly surprised by Sam’s subtle wit and wisdom.

Can Sam persuade her to change her style with a new hat? Will Izzy be able to appreciate Sam as the perfectly caring gentleman?

Izzy struggles with many choices.

Will she yield to her traditional Jewish upbringing or cross Delancey to a more modern approach to living?

She is enamored with the intellectual world, but appreciative of the simple love from her family. She feels the culture clash.

Come enjoy the humorous dialogue nestled within the manufactured suspense. Will there be a blossoming romance?

You will be glad you came to find out.

Cromwell Park 18030 Meridian Ave N
City of Shoreline's 1% for Art Program 2010

Raintree  Kristen Tollefson, artist. aluminum, glass and concrete.

Raintree is centrally located and visible to passers-by on the street as well as from all areas of the park.

Artist's statement: Located in the center of Cromwell Park within the lowest part of the landscaped stormwater runoff area, Raintree honors the setting and history of the site. The sculpture takes its inspiration from the stormwater and bog characteristics of the ground plane environment, while addressing rain as the source of the water.

This abstracted tree form with a visible root ball suggests the flow and growth of vein patterns that are found in both plants and water. Raintree is fabricated out of metal and highlighted with blue glass beads, durable materials that will respond to many kinds of ambient light.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: If You Could Be Mine

If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan

Seventeen-year-old Sahar has shared kisses and romantic dreams of the future with her best friend Nasrin since they were little girls. But modern Iran is a dangerous place for two girls in love. The punishment for homosexuality might be a beating, or it might be death by hanging. So far, their love has stayed secret ... but when Nasrin's family arranges a marriage for her, Sahar feels she must act.

Although homosexuality is a crime in Iran, transsexuality is not. In fact, the government will pay for sexual reassignment. Sahar knows she isn't really a man in a woman's body. But, what if this is the only way she can ever be with Nasrin?

This absorbing peek into another culture features a wide cast of well-written characters: Sahar, who loves Nasrin. Nasrin, who loves candy, and Bollywood movies, and pretty clothes, and being the center of attention ... and probably also loves Sahar. Sahar's father, who still mourns for his wife and refuses to move forward with his life. Sahar's cousin Ali, a gay man trying to find his place. Ali's friend Parveen, who tries to help Sahar sort things out. And Reza, the doctor engaged to marry Nasrin, who is not as simple and two-dimensional as Sahar might wish.

Kissing, mild cussing, sexual decisionmaking and sexual situations. Recommended for ages 14 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern
