In The Garden Now…..Anemone Clematis

White Anemone Clematis
Queen of The Climbers

Text and photos by Victoria Gilleland

I’ve always been fond of white flowering plants especially those that are particularly floriferous. They provide such a wonderful contrast to garden green with their bright white blossoms. An outstanding white climber is brightening my garden right now….. the beautiful Anemone Clematis!

Clematis Montana is easy to grow in northwest gardens and has a long bloom season. The massive display of crisp white flowers lasts for weeks in May and June. Over the years I’ve added many different varieties of Montana Clematis to my garden including pink flowering varieties such as Clematis Montana ‘Mayleen’ and Clematis Montana Rubens. Only the white varieties remain. It’s possible that the pink varieties have reverted to white or simply died out. Various plant varieties do revert to the species from time to time.

Clematis enjoys being planted so that roots are in the shade and flowers in the sun. Also, this is one of the few plants that actually wants to be planted deeper than it was growing in its nursery pot. When planted two or three inches deeper more roots form to support the plant.

Clematis appreciates being overplanted with some shallow rooted groundcover and/or mulched to keep the hot sun off the root area and to help with moisture retention. This is typically a long lived plant so prepare the planting area with good soil and compost. A generous serving of compost or manure in spring is much appreciated by these robust climbers.

Clematis Montana is an easy to grow very vigorous flowering vine. It will grow 20-30 feet high and easily cover an area 15 feet wide. It can be trained over arches, pergolas, fences, hedges, sheds, or posts. I’ve grown Clematis Montana up and through the 80-100 foot Douglas Fir trees on our property. It’s quite a sight to see those fir trees in bloom!

When to prune? If you prune right after the plant finishes flowering you will not interfere with next year’s blossoms. This plant can be sheared to remove heavy growth right after it finishes blooming. It’ll grow quickly during the summer and fall and will be ready to bloom come next spring.

This clematis grows and flowers well in full sun to half shade and even blooms quite nicely in fairly heavy shade. The plants get larger and stronger each year, but may take a year or two to get settled in the garden and really take off. An added bonus is that they are “deer resistant.” This doesn’t mean “deer proof,” only that deer might choose another plant over this one if there’s a tastier morsel nearby!

If you’ve got the space and structure to support a vigorous vine like this it’s definitely worth adding to the garden. Pollinators will thank you, butterflies will come to visit and the vanilla fragrance will draw you into the garden. You all win!

 (Botanical Name:  Clematis montana)

Senior Center Holiday Bazaar: Openings for table vendors

Applications open for vendors for Senior Center
Holiday Bazaar

The Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center will be held Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4; 10:00am to 4:00pm both days.

This event is a Shoreline community tradition that is attended by over 2,000 people. They look forward to getting an early start on some unique gifts for their holiday shopping. This year, the center is pleased to be able to open a new area for more vendors.

Potential vendors must meet certain criteria in order to be considered:
  • All items must be handcrafted by the applicant and of good quality.
  • No commercial crafts or imports accepted.
  • A photo of your craft/work must accompany your table rental application if you have not been part of previous Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center Holiday Bazaar events.
  • All items must be new.
  • Applications must be submitted by August 11, 2017.
  • An eight foot table and two chairs are provided for each vendor, more as requested.

To request an application contact Jon Ann Cruver, Program Coordinator, available Wednesday through Friday, or call 206-365-1536.

We make every attempt to minimize duplication of items for sale. In case of duplication, earliest postmark will have first consideration; the senior center will have the final say.

In addition to the vendors, the Bazaar features our ThimbleBelle Quilt Raffle, Silent Auction, and Bake Sale. The Center’s Bargain Corner will feature holiday items as well as the Shop Specials during both days of the event.

The Bazaar will be held at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, #1 Shoreline 98155.

Million Step month ends with potluck celebration in Paramount School Park

Helen W, left, logged the most steps during the month

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Dedicated walkers who participated in the Million Step challenge gathered in Ridgecrest's Paramount School Park Thursday for a potluck and a celebration.

Helen W, who logged the most steps during the month, was presented with a certificate and walking-appropriate prizes. Prizes also went to second place stepper Trevor D, 1,045.719 steps, and third place G Harris, 957,934 steps.

Everyone who participated was declared a winner, for promoting their own health and wellness.

The Million Step Challenge asked participants to count their steps and record their daily totals on the city website from the April 29 kick off to the last day of May.

The totals ranged from 1450 to Helen's winning 1,261,826.

Many people walk and do not record their steps, but this event, co-sponsored by the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association and the City of Shoreline was a way of calling attention to community goals of health, fitness and friendly competition.

Cats: Have a Heart - Corazon needs a furrever home

Corazon, born 10-30-2014

Corazon means "heart" in Spanish, and he is a real sweetheart. Corazon was transferred to Seattle Area Feline Rescue from Seattle Animal Shelter, and went home with a family shortly after he got here.

When he went home his family spent time with him and absolutely fell in love. They say that he is an exceptionally sweet and playful cat with a lot of love and attention to give.

After a bit they noticed that he was having some trouble adjusting to their house, and felt that he was not happy. They have another kitty, and just felt like Corazon was having a hard time adjusting to his new situation.

So they returned him back to SAFe so that he could find a home that could give all the love and attention he needs and deserves (direct quote from his former family). He just needs a second shot at a furrever home, and would be an excellent addition to anybody's life.

To learn more about Corazon, or to set up a time to meet him, email Seattle Area Feline Rescue.

Pediatric dental office opens in Ballinger Village

Tree House Dentistry for Kids is a new pediatric dental office located in Shoreline. We just opened our doors at the end of December 2016 and are very excited to become a part of the Shoreline community.

Our office is geared towards kids! Our Kid’s corner at reception always has a movie playing, and it’s filled with lots of unique books and toys.

If you become a member of our “No Cavity Club”, we’ll take your picture and hang it up on the wall. Our patients enjoy drawing us pictures and making us “thank-you cards”, which we also proudly display.

We try to make dentistry less intimidating (dare we say, fun!) for kids (and for parents).

TV on the ceiling!
During dental treatment, your child can enjoy watching a movie or show, from ceiling-mounted TVs.

We have found that this type of “distraction” really helps keep patients preoccupied.

Most of our patients don’t want to leave when their treatment is done!

We understand that not every child can be treated the same way. Some patients may have unique needs, due to health or medical restrictions, or phobias.

We’ll work with parents and kids, as a team to try to come up with different solutions to make dentistry a non-traumatic experience.

This could mean treatment with sedation, general anesthesia, or multiple “desensitizing” visits. Whichever the course of treatment, we’re here to help!

The following is our Mission Statement:

At Tree House Dentistry for Kids, our goal is to provide optimal oral care for children and adolescents, in a fun and relaxing environment.

We will promise the following:
  • We will always put the best interest of the child, first.
  • We will provide a comprehensive and ethical diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient.
  • We will work with parents and children to develop strategies to improve oral hygiene at home.
  • We will provide adequate referrals for necessary treatment that is beyond the scope of our practice.

Our motto, at Tree House Dentistry for Kids is “small teeth, big smiles!”

Drs. Mike and Jane Austin

The practice owners, Drs. Mike and Jane Austin, have been planning this joint venture for many years and feel so fortunate to be able to work with kids every day.

Dr. Mike is a Board-certified Pediatric dentist, and is dual-trained in Dental Anesthesiology.

Dr. Jane’s background is in general dentistry, with hospital-based, accredited training in Dental Anesthesiology.

For more information, including full doctors’ bios, please visit our website at www.THsmiles.com. We’re also on Facebook.com/treehousdentistryforkids.

The office is located at 20214 Ballinger Way NE, Shoreline, WA, in the Ballinger Village, next to 24 Hour Fitness.

We look forward to meeting more families and are excited to be a part of such a great community!
