Shoreline man arrested after two year investigation into exploitation of minors

Two year police investigation into network of sexual predators leads to a 28 year old man who lives with his parents in Shoreline.

From The Seattle Times:

Charges filed against a 28-year-old Shoreline man detail an elaborate online ploy to entice underage girls into performing sex acts on web cameras, with the recordings then traded within an online community of men.
According to the FBI, the defendant, Michael Berenson, would then blackmail the girls by threatening to show the recordings to their parents if they later refused to perform additional sex acts on camera, say charging papers.
The charges allege Berenson was part of a network of men who not only collected and traded sexual recordings of underage girls, but also stealthily enticed and groomed victims online to generate those recordings.

Shoreline resident Bill Willard noted my shock at the variety of marine life that has been apparently hiding from me for decades. Contributors have sent in recent photos of sea lions and orcas cavorting in the waters just off Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

So Bill decided to shock me some more and sent in this photo of a Giant Pacific Octopus.

Bill says,

The variety of marine life that can be seen at our local beaches can be quite surprising. I took this photo at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park a few years ago when Zoey my Lab tried to retrieve a dead giant pacific octopus from the waves. For reference she was a good sized dog at about 75 pounds.
According to National Geographic
Giant Pacific Octopus Enteroctopus dofleini
Average life span in the wild: 3 to 5 years
Size: 9.75 to 16 ft (3 to 5 m)
Weight: 22 to 110 lbs (10 to 50 kg)

Theater Review: The Producers - be prepared to laugh

THE PRODUCERS; A Mel Brooks Musical
Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
Musical Director / Producer is Dr. Charles Enlow
Director is Jessica Low
Conductor is Bruce Monroe
Choreography by Nick Perry
Shoreline Community College Theater
May 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 2017

Review by Doug Gochanour

Be prepared to laugh and admire this outstanding musical comedy.

Elaborate and fabulous are words that come to mind in describing this production by the Shoreline Community College Drama Program. The singing, dancing, sets, costumes, and all the technical amenities work perfectly together. A wonderful 21-member orchestra provides the accompaniment to enrich the presentation.

The Producers was originally a comedy movie by Mel Brooks in 1968. It was highly acclaimed and served as the basis for his Broadway Musical in 2001. The Musical incorporates many of the humorous situations and jokes, but seems more lively and upbeat. It provides a showcase for this young, extremely talented cast.

Josh Pulley plays Max Bialystock, a Broadway producer with a recent opening night flop. Carson Buck plays Leo Bloom, a timid accountant dreaming of a more exciting life. They discover that it may be possible to make more money with a flop than with a hit.

Springtime for Hitler - a play within a play

Together, Max and Leo plan to find the worst play ever written, hire the worst director, raise two million dollars, hire the worst actors, close opening night on Broadway, take the money and fly to Rio. The result of this adventure is the ludicrous musical Spring Time for Hitler. It is a rollicking musical within this musical.

A love interest is thrown in for good measure. Ariaga Mucek is the voluptuous Ulla, who is able to test the testosterone of both Leo and Max. Will one of them succeed with her?

Will this scheme to oversell interests in a Broadway flop bring the desired outcome?

As well as exaggerating humorous situations, The Producers presents ridiculous caricatures of Nazis, women, homosexuals, and show business professionals in general. It is all done in farcical fun, resulting in a well deserved standing ovation.

There is so much more to enjoy. You should see it for yourself, and you will be glad you did.

State Representative Jessyn Farrell to run for Mayor of Seattle

State Rep Jessyn Farrell to run for Seattle Mayor
State Representative Jessyn Farrell (D-46), announced on Friday that she will seek the Seattle Office of the Mayor.

Farrell, a Seattle native and attorney, has served in the State House of Representatives since she was elected in 2012 where she has championed progressive environmental, transportation, affordable housing, at-risk youth, and worker fairness legislation.

“Today our city faces extreme challenges related to our rapid growth and wealth gap,” Farrell stated. “Seattle needs bold and steady leadership to find solutions to these issues. With a proven track record of showing results, I believe I’m uniquely qualified to usher in a new era and achieve the quality of life we want for all those who call Seattle home.”

Farrell is the former Executive Director of Transportation Choices Coalition, where she led efforts that resulted in $25 billion in bus, rail, bike and pedestrian investments in Washington State. As a transportation leader in the state House, Farrell passed The Driving While Under the Influence of Electronics Act, which will prevent loss of life and property on our roadways by requiring hands-free cell phone use. She also helped pass the 2015 Connect Washington transportation package that made major new investments in affordable housing and transportation improvements throughout the City of Seattle.

Farrell is known as one of Washington State's strongest champions of smart urban growth, and has worked to protect the rights of renters and transit commuters.

“We need to ensure that Seattle is a place for everyone – not just the wealthy few.  I'm excited to bring my experiences as a lawyer, manager, lawmaker, and problem-solver to City Hall, so that we can take decisive action on our greatest challenges: homelessness, housing affordability, traffic congestion, and economic inequality.”

"Throughout my time in the Legislature and in my current role, there is no one in public office I trust more than Jessyn to actually put her progressive values into action, said  Lt. Governor, Cyrus Habib, an endorser of Farrell’s.

"She didn't just talk about income inequality; she got her colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass a statewide increase in the minimum wage, paid sick leave, and workplace protections for pregnant workers."

“If you want to understand Jessyn’s values and why we need her as our first woman mayor in nearly a century, just look at her experience.“ Tali Rausch, parent of three children in public schools and education activist. “From tutoring refugees in Yesler Terrace as an Americorps member to breaking the roads-versus-transit gridlock, to passing legislation to support mothers and children, she has a progressive, pragmatic track record that will provide the steady leadership Seattle needs now more than ever.”

Farrell will immediately begin her campaign to become Seattle’s next mayor, meeting with residents of every neighborhood and sharing her vision for the city throughout the Spring and Summer.

-----
The 46th legislative district includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and a large section of northeast Seattle. Farrell lives in Seattle. She ran unopposed in the last election. Her term is up at the end of 2018.

On to State for Shorecrest Soccer - Shorewood out

Elliot Misic #9 defends against Shorewood player
in game earlier this year

The Shorecrest boys soccer team defeated Edmonds-Woodway Thursday evening, 4-2, and with the win the Scots have qualified for the 3A State Championship tournament that will begin next week.

But before State starts, the Scots (9-6-4) will play Squalicum (17-1-1) for third and fourth place in District One at Shoreline Stadium. Game time Saturday has been moved up to 3pm to accommodate Squalicum's Prom Night.

Shorecrest needed to come from behind against E-W to keep their season alive. After the Warriors scored with 5:00 to play in the first half, Adrian Ortega tied the score with under a minute to go in the half.

Ortega took a long pass from teammate Elliot Misic and sneaked it past the Warriors' keeper.

"I saw Adrian deep down the right side and was able to get him the ball.  His shot was beautiful, perfect," said Misic. "The timing couldn't have been any better.  His goal gave us a big lift."

SC took the lead for good on a controversial free kick by Noah Trostle with just two minutes into the second half.

"I saw their defenders with their backs turned, thinking time had been called, and their keeper was all the way over by the left post," Trostle said after the game. "There was a huge opening on the right and I made the shot."

Misic scored the Scots' final two goals, one on a perfect pass from Ricardo Ruiz.

"I saw Ricardo take it down the line. I sprinted toward the goal, and he put the ball right on my toe," a sweaty but happy Misic beamed afterwards.

After the Warriors scored on a penalty-kick following a handball in the box to make it 3-2 SC, Misic scored again with under twenty minutes to play.

"I was just outside the box and I one-timed it. It deflected off a defender and went in. Sometimes you just get lucky," said Misic.

Shorewood was eliminated on Thursday in the late game, losing to Squalicum 5-1.

Lynnwood will face Snohomish  at 7pm at Shoreline Stadium for the District Championship.

Ride canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards for Free from Noon to 4pm

Race 12.4-miles on Sammamish River from Redmond to Kenmore for prize money

Kenmore’s inaugural Waterfront Activities Day begins its maiden voyage Saturday, May 13.

The day-long community celebration shoves off at 10am with a 12.4-miles race of human-powered watercraft on the Sammamish River from Redmond to Kenmore’s Squire’s Landing Park where people of all ages will be gathered to enjoy FREE canoe, kayak and stand up paddleboard and dragon boat rides during the Waterfront Fair from noon to 4pm.

The Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center (KWAC) is the event organizer.

“Our access to the Sammamish River and Lake Washington make Kenmore a coveted destination for those who enjoy a day out on the water with family and friends,” said City Manager Rob Karlinsey, an avid canoeist.
“Last year’s successful Walkways and Waterways bond measure, the Lakepointe project and this year’s Waterfront Activities Day are some of the ways we’re leveraging our proximity to water to enhance the quality of life in Kenmore.”

Racers can begin to assemble at 9am on Saturday at Luke McRedmond Park located at 15811 Redmond Way in Redmond. Any type of human-powered watercraft can be used during the race. The race begins at 10am. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Pre-register for $30, or on race day for $40. All participants will receive a goody bag.

"People in Kenmore have a strong affinity for water-based recreation and leisure activities," said race organizer Sheri Baker, a KWAC board member. "By combining the race and fair we're able to bring together community around a shared passion, which helps to cultivate it."

The family-friendly waterfront fair starts at noon -- the same time race participants will begin arriving at Squires Landing Park, 7353 NE 175th Street. During the festivities attendees can try out canoes, kayaks, and standup paddleboards for free or learn about summer rowing and dragon boat programs available to youth and adults.

Other scheduled on-site activities include: food and beverage stations, raffles, local vendor booths, information about Kenmore’s boathouse and dock plans.

KWAC board member and fair organizer Debra Srebnik said she believes Kenmore’s “Waterfront Activities Day has the ability to become a very large, transformational event for Kenmore.”

KWAC is a volunteer-run non-profit formed in 2013 to promote a healthy, hand-powered watercraft culture in Kenmore by providing community access to sprint canoe and kayak training for youth, rowing and dragon boat practices for adults and youth. KWAC merged the race and waterfront fair after years of them each operating independently.

Presenting race sponsors are 9 Yards Brewing Company, Spencer 68 and LINQ. In-kind race sponsors are HodgePodge, Ostrom’s Drug and Gift, Great Clips of Kenmore and Redmond, Starbuck’s-Redmond, Jessica’s Unique Bites, Bastyr University, Daddy’s Donuts, Hyatt House, Ford of Kirkland and Super Supplements as well as the cities of Kenmore and Redmond.
