Chimicum running sea trials

Photo and text by Jan Hansen

WSF is building new Olympic Class ferries to replace some of the fleet's oldest vessels.

Each new ferry carries 144 vehicles. The Olympic Class design is based on the Issaquah class, the most versatile vessel in our fleet.

Two of four are in service, the third will be complete in 2017.

This third vessel, the Chimacum was running sea trials Friday morning off of Saltwater Park. Our Salish welcoming figures were there to meet her.

Chimacum will replace an older vessel on the Seattle / Bremerton route in late spring 2017.

Frank Workman on Sports: No longer blind to excellence

Frank Workman
By Frank Workman

While nothing matches the feel of a crisp fall Friday night watching the spectacle of a good high school football game, the distance of the fans from the field, coupled with the unrecognizable nature of the helmeted players, make for a remote experience.

Basketball, on the other hand, has to be the most intimate of all the high school sports.

Fans sit within feet of the court. It's natural for passions to be aroused and for fans to try their best to help make the difference between victory and defeat for their team.

Players' faces, and their facial expressions, are distinct, as are their sweat and tears.

Fans get so close to the action, it's easy to form opinions and make judgments about players - from both teams.

I stumbled upon my first girls high school basketball game in 1999. I was blown away by the teamwork, effort, pretty passes, and artistry I saw. It was love at first sight.

The following seasons I was all in cheering for my local team, attending all their games, doing my darnedest to root them on to victory every night.

But there was a team in our league that was a juggernaut, a Goliath. They dominated, going 67-1 in league play the next four years, 98-9 overall.

They were talented, sure. But they were intimidating, too. It seemed as if they started guarding our girls as soon as they got off the bus.

They wore kneepads, mouth guards, and dour, grim expressions that never changed.

If you looked up the word 'gameface' in the dictionary, you would see their team picture. It never seemed as if they were having any fun.

They had quick guards and tall powerful post-players.

The last thing they needed was a deadly outside shooter, one who never missed. And yet, they had one.

Boy, did they ever.

She drained threes with such regularity that I demonized her, actually muttering under my breath, through clenched teeth, the following phrase every time she released a shot --- "that evil, black-hearted, soulless she-witch". And just as I got to the 'she-witch' part, the ball invariably would go through the net for three points.

Even though I'd never met her, I hated her. Not in a Tonya Harding / Nancy Kerrigan, or a post-Mariners A-Rod way, but in a way that prevented me from imagining she could ever be capable of having any positive characteristics.

Her team won the State Championship her senior year.

The following morning the paper had a picture of her. She was leaping for joy, hugging a teammate, ponytail in full twirl.

And she was smiling.

I realized I'd never seen her, nor a single one of her teammates, smile. Ever.

For the first time, I saw her as a girl. Not as a basketball player - as a girl.

The more I looked at that photograph, the more it dawned on me that she looked a whole lot like all the girls I rooted for. A nice girl. One who probably liked the same music, movies, and TV shows as did the girls on my team. One who, just like the girls I rooted for, could be trusted to babysit their neighbors’ kids.

It occurred to me that probably the two biggest differences between her and the girls I rooted for were what color shirts they wore, and what part of town they lived in.

I kick myself to this day for not having enjoyed or appreciated that team’s excellence.

I was irrational, admittedly. Like some of the parents I see and hear at games now.

As the years have rolled by, I've changed. I still root for my team, but I don't live and die like I used to. I've come to appreciate all the players and teams I see, recognizing they're all flawed individuals (like myself), striving to find themselves and become the best they're capable of being.

And when excellence presents itself, I'm no longer blind to it. No matter what color shirt it’s wearing.

AG: GMA to pay $1.1M in costs, fees in historic campaign finance case

From the Office of the State Attorney General

In a letter opinion, a Thurston County Superior Court judge ordered the Grocery Manufacturers Association to pay nearly $1.1 million in costs and fees stemming from Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s campaign finance lawsuit. GMA has previously been penalized $18 million for its intentional violations of Washington law, the largest campaign finance judgment in history.

“GMA willfully disregarded Washington state campaign finance laws,” Ferguson said. “The record-setting penalty illustrates how egregious GMA’s conduct was. It has been a multi-year effort to hold them accountable.”

Judge Anne Hirsch ordered GMA to pay the state’s requested attorney fees, which she held to be “reasonable and appropriate,” as well as litigation and investigation costs.

“The State asks for over a million dollars in fees and costs,” Judge Hirsch’s letter reads. “GMA presents three challenges to the State’s cost bill. The court rejects those challenges and awards the fees and costs as requested.”

The case arose from Ferguson’s investigation of the finances of opposition to voter Initiative 522, which would have required labeling of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in food sold to consumers.

Ferguson filed the lawsuit against GMA in October 2013. In March 2016, Judge Hirsch granted the Attorney General’s Motion for Summary Judgment and ruled that GMA violated state campaign finance laws when it failed to register and report its political committee, which opposed I-522.

GMA was identified as the largest contributor to the “No on 522” political committee in campaign disclosure filings. However, over 30 members of GMA actually financed the opposition campaign through a special, earmarked account but were not initially identified as individual donors.

In her November 2016 ruling, Judge Hirsch found GMA’s violations were intentional, writing: “In light of all the evidence in the record, it is not credible that GMA executives believed that shielding GMA’s members as the true source of contributions to GMA’s Defense of Brands Account was legal.”

Judge Hirsch found that the testimony of GMA President and CEO Pamela Bailey “was combative at times. Bailey often would not answer direct questions and frequently answered questions with questions of her own, and gave lengthy explanations that appeared designed to lecture the court and counsel for the State.”

In 2013, GMA raised over $14 million for a new “Defense of Brands” account. These funds came as a solicitation and were above and beyond regular member association dues. PepsiCo, for example, contributed nearly $3 million to the account. Nestle and Coca-Cola contributed nearly $2 million each.

GMA then contributed $11 million of that $14 million to “No on 522.” In an effort to shield individual companies from required disclosure, the money was listed as coming from GMA, not the actual donors, such as Pepsi, Nestle and Coke.

Internal GMA documents obtained as a result of Ferguson’s lawsuit revealed an intentional, systematic effort to conceal the true sources of those contributions to “No on 522.”

In one GMA Executive Committee meeting, the Executive Vice President for Government Affairs noted that the fund would “shield individual companies from public disclosure and possible criticism.”

Senior Assistant Attorneys General Linda Dalton and Garth Ahearn and Deputy Solicitor General Callie Castillo handled this case for the state.

The Attorney General’s Office enforces the state’s campaign finance disclosure law to ensure free, open and fair elections in Washington state. Since becoming Attorney General, Attorney General Ferguson has devoted more agency resources to campaign finance casework.

SCC Men’s Basketball wins North Region title for only the 4th time

After a 68-65 loss to Bellevue College on January 25th the Shoreline Dolphins found themselves at 2-3 in the North Region. The Phins trailed 1st place Peninsula by 2 games and sat in 5th place in the North Region standings.

Nine games later Shoreline CC is celebrating their 1st North Region championship since 2010 and only the 4th Region championship in the history of Shoreline Men’s Basketball.

The Phins began their turnaround with two big road wins to close out the first half of North Region play. Shoreline won at Olympic by a score of 68-54 then traveled to Everett and came away with a tough 83-75 victory.

Next up was a trip to Port Angeles to take on Peninsula and try to pull within one game of the Pirates. Playing in a high school gym due to inclement weather at Peninsula’s campus, the Phins pulled out an ugly 58-51 road win.

The Phins would go on to win their next 5 games completing an 8 game win streak that took them from 5th to 1st. Shoreline dropped their final game of North Region play to Everett but still secured the North Region title and the #1 seed heading into the NWAC Basketball Championships.

Shoreline will participate in the NWAC tourney beginning on Thursday, March 9th at Everett Community College. The draw for the NWAC Basketball Championship Tournament will take place on Sunday, March 5th at 3pm.

You can watch it live on the NWAC YouTube Channel.

A glorious season ended with a resounding thud Wednesday night when the Shorecrest boys basketball team came a cropper against the Stanwood Spartans, 64-52 in the first round of the 3A State Tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

The Scots finished the year at 22-3, with two of their losses coming against Stanwood, the other at the hands of Mountlake Terrace. They notched wins against all four of the 4A teams they faced.

The last four minutes of the first half spelled doom for the Scots, as they committed turnovers on 7 straight possessions. The Spartans were able to break open a close game, extending their 17-16 lead midway through the second period to a 34-20 halftime lead.

Normally reliable guards Chris Lee and Malcolm Rosier-Butler couldn't have picked a worse night to go ice cold, combining for a measly 5 for 27 shooting from the field.

Philip Pepple did his level best to pick up his struggling teammates, scoring 16 points, hauling down 12 rebounds, and blocking 7 shots.

Simon Acker grabbed 8 rebounds and scored 9 points, falling just shy of a double-double in his final game. The slender Stanford-bound senior scholar reflected after the game what the experience of playing on his high school team had meant to him.

"I loved having these cool guys for teammates and hanging around with them, guys I wouldn't have gotten to be with if not for basketball. And getting to compete for my school and help elevate school spirit is something I'll always remember".

Stanwood coach Zach Ward, gracious in victory, shared his thoughts on going up against the Scots.

"Shorecrest is very well coached. Coach Fischer makes you do things you don't want to do. They have three scorers who are hard to stop. We were lucky they didn't shoot well tonight, unlike how they shot in the District championship game against us."

The Spartans' reward for eliminating the Scots? They have a 5:30 quarter-final game Thursday against Nathan Hale, the #1 ranked team in the USA.

Hale enjoyed the benefit of the statistical anomaly of having seven (7) players happen to transfer to the home of the Raiders in the off-season.

A Walk to 5 Acre Woods - learn about community efforts to create a new park in Lake Forest Park

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) and its group of volunteers and friends supporting the efforts of the project 5 Acre Woods invites the community to join them for “A Walk to 5 Acre Woods Event” at 10:30am on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

As the population of Puget Sound continues to grow, many urban forests are disappearing due to increased development pressure.

Deep within the heart of Lake Forest Park lies a rare opportunity to save one of the last remnants of mature second growth forest.

In 1975, Seattle Public Utilities purchased 5.6 acres located on 40th Place NE with the intent to build a water reservoir. An alternate site was eventually chosen for the reservoir and now the City of Seattle will sell the property.

Because of this the City of Lake Forest Park has a chance to purchase the largest remaining undisturbed second growth forest within its borders.

The site includes steep slopes, a stream and critical areas and their buffers which cover approximately 90% of the property. The forest is home to over 800 trees, mostly native, with dense stands of Douglas Fir, Big-Leaf Maple, Western Red Cedar, Spruce and Pacific Madrone. They provide high carbon sequestration, and flood mitigation for Lyon Creek.

The site has become an important wildlife corridor and deer, coyotes, raccoons, fox, mountain beavers, along with over 20 bird species have been spotted there.

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF), a community based nonprofit group, would like to preserve the parcel as wildlife habitat, develop the open space for low impact passive recreation, and create an area for active recreation as a playground.

LFPSF was successful in shepherding a grant application to King County Conservation Futures, and $250,000 has been awarded to the city for acquisition of this land, if matching funds are obtained.

A second grant application to King County Conservation Futures is due March 8th and it is likely that further funds can be allocated. LFPSF is committed to assisting the city of Lake Forest Park with additional grant applications and a capital fundraising campaign for matching funds to purchase the property.

LFPSF has a successful track record of purchasing land for public green space as they were instrumental in the acquisition of the Grace Cole Nature Park for the city of Lake Forest Park. The LFPSF continues to provide volunteer based maintenance and restoration for the property and they envision a similar model for the 5-Acre Woods site.

The community is invited to join for their first monthly “A Walk to 5 Acre Woods Event” at 10:30am on Saturday, March 4, 2017 to walk along the property and learn more about the efforts to conserve this parcel as a park and wildlife sanctuary.

Meet in front of the Lake Forest Park Elementary (18500 37th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park) and proceed along the pedestrian walkway on 40th Place NE, to take a short walk to 5-Acre Woods for a brief tour. Refreshments will be provided at arrival. LFP Elementary School has allowed us to use their parking lot.

If you would like more information about this topic or are interested in volunteering, contact Lisa Pedigo,

They have a 5:30 quarter-final game Thursday against Nathan Hale, the #1 ranked team in the USA.Hale enjoyed the benefit of the statistical anomaly of having seven (7)  players happen to transfer to the home of the Raiders in the off-season.

Shoreline Schools' robotics team to compete in Mount Vernon and Snohomish events

By Wesley Proudlove

Shoreline's Team Pronto Robotics is getting ready to compete against other teams in the PNW Robotics region. There are over 350 teams in WA, OR and ID alone but worldwide there are 6000 teams and 100,000 competing students.

Team Pronto students are from both Shoreline High Schools and home school students from the area. The 40 person team is given a task by FRC Robotics and the students have a limited budget and limited time to build a robot to complete this task.

Every year the tasks change but the students' enthusiasm never fails.

This year students are to build robots of a specific size and weight to compete. On a field the robots are to deliver large gears to humans in a tower and shoot large plastic balls into a even high tower.

As if this wasn’t enough, at the end of each 4 minute round the robots are to climb a rope to the humans in the tower.

This may sound overwhelming to the normal adult but these robotics kids have grabbed ahold of the task and built not one but two robots to perform these tasks.

Team Pronto will be competing against 35 other teams at Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon the weekend of March 18th and 19th and then again the weekend of March 25th and 26th at Glacier Peak in Snohomish.

Competition times are from 8am to about 4pm. The event is free and open to all ages.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Swagger

Swagger by Carl Deuker

Jonas Dolan doesn't have a lot of post-high-school prospects until a canny basketball coach helps him improve his game -- and his grades.

For the first time, Jonas considers going to college. But then the family moves from California to Seattle, and all the friends, coaches and teachers supporting Jonas are too far away to help much.

In Seattle, Jonas finds a new friend. Levi is also a talented basketball player, but halfway through the season, Jonas discovers why Levi seems so withdrawn and depressed, especially when Coach Hartwell is nearby.

Although Levi begs his friend to keep quiet and pretend that nothing is wrong, Jonas knows that he will need to do something.

But, what?

Excellent characters facing a truly horrible situation. I even didn't die during the basketball sequences. (Basketball lovers will love the basketball parts. Me, not so much.) Overall, a strong story, recommended for readers (especially sports fans) ages 14 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

New report charts course to zero-emission, carbon-neutral King County Metro bus fleet

to be replaced by zero-emission fleet

A new report and recommendation released today by King County Executive Dow Constantine shows how to completely transition Metro Transit’s bus fleet to zero-emission as early as 2034.

The move would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality and public health – key goals outlined in King County’s strategic plans on climate and social justice. Battery-electric buses cost incrementally more than hybrid diesel-electric buses, but have reduced long-term maintenance costs.

“We have the opportunity to further cut pollution and improve the quality of life for our region,” said Metro Transit General Manager Rob Gannon. “We are encouraging the bus manufacturing industry to continue to improve the technology and drive down costs so we can accomplish these goals.”

Photos: Snow on trees

Just in case you forgot, here's proof that it did snow in Shoreline.

Lee Lageschulte took this on NW 175th in Shoreline.

Shoreline got the pretty roads - Seattle didn't do as well.

Photos courtesy Washington State Patrol

Washington State Patrol sent out the not-so-pretty photos. This is the tanker truck rollover that shut down I-5 for hours and hours. The issue was that the tank contained hazardous material and had to be handled very carefully.

Here's what the State Patrol said about the clean up:

"After assessment of the scene, the Seattle Fire Department determined that this was a hazardous material situation and advised the WSP that the whole freeway needed to be shut down to include the on and off ramps. The area was cleared and a command post was set up north of the scene.

"Command post briefings occurred every 30 minutes to update all agencies involved in this incident. The agencies present were Seattle Fire Department (Incident Command), Seattle Police Department, Washington State Patrol (WSP), Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Division, Washington Department of Transportation, Seattle Department of Transportation and Department of Ecology. In addition, the Joint Intelligence Center (JIC) for Seattle was activated so representatives from all agencies involved could receive real time information to resolve this incident as efficient as possible.

"The Washington State Patrol along with all agencies involved, understand that this was an enormous disruption to all commuters that were affected by this event. WSP troopers escorted equipment to the scene to assist and expedite the Seattle Fire Department’s great efforts to clear this as soon as possible. The potential catastrophic consequences of this situation made it imperative to insure every step was performed with the utmost attention to detail and safety by the Seattle Fire Department."
