Snow day at schools

Dog and owner walk the snow filled, deserted Shorecrest High School campus.

Shoreline Public Schools were closed for the snow day. Shoreline Christian was closed. Kings and Evergreen websites had no notices but they were probably closed as well, especially as their kids travel further distances to get to school.

Transit Alert – Metro is remaining on snow reroutes until further notice

Metro Transit service is remaining on snow reroutes and operating with chains and likely delays until weather and road conditions allow for a safe return to regular routing.

When Metro service is significantly affected by snow or other weather-related events, the Metro Online website is updated and Transit Alerts are sent to affected subscribers.

Metro riders can prepare ahead by visiting Metro Online and the Metro winter website, and familiarizing themselves with information about how Metro operates in the snow, as well as the snow routing for the routes they ride. Snow routes are shown in timetables.

When streets are snowy or icy, it is best to be aware of conditions in your immediate area, check media reports, check for transit reroutes, then wait for buses at posted bus stops on the flat portions of arterial streets that have been cleared or treated, or at major transfer points such as transit centers or park and ride lots.

Be prepared for the weather, longer than usual waits and more crowded buses.

While Metro utilizes all available resources to operate service as normally as possible during adverse conditions, the safety of everyone is the highest priority. Buses may be delayed or rerouted, and Metro staff cannot predict affected areas or tell when a specific bus might get to a stop.

There are no ‘snow schedules’, but rather snow routes, when implemented. Transit customers should check the Snow and Ice page for information about their route's status or routing revisions, use the regularly published schedule as a guide, then expect delays.

If buses are operating along their normal routes, but delayed, it may be possible to get more specific information by visiting Metro’s Puget Sound Trip Planner and checking the ‘Next Departures and Stops’ feature. Please note, however, that “real time” information may be less reliable in adverse conditions.

Watch for Transit Alerts when conditions allow for Metro service to start returning to regular routes.

LWV of Snohomish County to honor Arlington Mayor on Feb 18

At its annual birthday luncheon on Saturday, February 18th, the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County will present its 2017 Democracy in Action award to Barbara Tolbert, Mayor of Arlington, in recognition of her record of civic service.

Mayor Tolbert was elected to office in 2011 and is now serving her second term. Under her leadership the City of Arlington has developed policies and procedures that provide clear guidelines for daily operations in all departments as well as providing planning and forecasting for future growth.

Throughout the Oso Landslide aftermath, she provided guidance and support to the staff and citizens responding to the needs of victims and families. The mayor remains involved in the coordination of the multitude of government and private agencies that have assisted during the nearly three-year period of active response to the Oso tragedy.

Mayor Tolbert has recently led the City of Arlington and the Town of Darrington in filing an application for “America’s Best Communities” Award. The lengthy process was coordinated with the assistance of Washington State University and resulted in their application being chosen as one of three finalists.

Pat Fogarty-Cramer, who nominated the mayor for the League’s Democracy in Action Award, said “I believe that Mayor Tolbert exemplifies the meaning of leadership by example and encourages the involvement of citizens in their government.
"Democracy is alive and well in this community today because of her desire to see it thrive and develop into a vibrant environment for future generations.”

The buffet luncheon will be at Everett Community College, Jackson Center, Wilderness Room, 1010 Tower Road, Everett starting at 11:30. Entertainment will feature Debbie Dimitrie enacting the life of Nellie Bly.

For reservations, send a $25 check to Judy Chapman, 200 James St. #205, Edmonds, WA 98020, by February 11th.

Obituary – Earl Smith Long Jr.

Earl Smith Long
1926-2016
Earl Smith Long Jr. 1926-2016

Loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Earl S. Long Jr., aged 89, of Shoreline, Washington, died peacefully last year on February 3, 2016.

Earl was born on May 25, 1926 in Clarinda, Iowa to Earl and Lois (Linebaugh) Long. He was the fourth of ten children, and spent his youth moving frequently, with his family, in both Iowa and Missouri. They ultimately settled in Hartsburg, Missouri, where he would be the first member of his family to graduate from high school.

Following graduation in 1944, Earl was drafted into the US Army where he served as an Infantryman and saw combat in Europe during WWII. Following the war and a brief return to civilian life, he reenlisted and returned to Europe where he served in the Constabulary Forces in Austria and met the love of his life, Gunde Friedl.

They were married on November 24, 1948 in Salzburg, Austria and celebrated their 65th anniversary before Gunde died in 2014. Earl made the army his career, serving for 22 years before retiring as a Major of Infantry in 1966. During his career he served several tours in Germany, in Korea during the Korean War, and at numerous posts throughout the US.

He was also a remarkable football player, captain of both his undefeated high school football team, and the team that won the US Military European Championship in 1949.

Along the way, he and Gunde had two children – Ronald and Jeffery. His last posting with the army was at Fort Lawton, in Seattle.

They bought a house in the neighborhood just north of Seattle, now the city of Shoreline, which was their home for the next 50 years. Following his military career, Earl worked for almost 20 years as a driver’s license examiner for the State of Washington.

After his and Gunde’s retirements, they continued their travels throughout the US and world, frequently visiting family and friends in Europe, walking on the beaches in Hawaii, and visiting the distant countries of New Zealand and Fiji.

It can be said of Earl that he never sat still for very long, and he was always ready for travel and adventure. Following the death of his loving wife in 2014, Earl spent his last two years in the kind care of the staff at Brookdale Memory Care in Alderwood, Washington.

Earl is survived by his sister Delores Sloan of Maryville, and brother Larry Long of Holts Summit, both in Missouri; by his sons Ronald and Jeffery; their wives Heidi Bodding and Missy Long; grandchildren Nick, Lindsey, Anneliese, and Tristan; and great-grandchildren Connor and Aidan. Additionally, Earl is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He is remembered fondly, and missed by all.

Letter to the Editor: the Children's Center building is simply worn out

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my support for the upcoming Shoreline Schools bond proposition.

As a parent of Shoreline students, I support the replacing of the two older middle schools. However, as an early childhood educator at the Shoreline Children’s Center, I am especially excited about the addition of an early learning campus for our district. Research shows that an investment in early education is a proven boost for our community. Children who have access to quality preschool programs earn more, are more likely to graduate from high school and are more likely to attend college. They are less likely to repeat grades or get in trouble with the law as they get older.

The idea for an early learning center is very forward thinking of the Instructional Programming Committee and I am grateful for them being cognizant of all of our learners.

As a member of the Shoreline community, I take great pride in working for the Shoreline Children's Center and feel connected to the families it serves. I hear heartwarming stories from parents who attended the school as children and Grandparents who remember it being built in 1956. However, this building has never been remodeled and it is showing its age in many ways. These aren’t small cosmetic issues or “band-aid” repairs. Our structure is simply worn out. For example, we were forced to close down for two days in December for plumbing issues, which I’m sad to see have not been resolved. Our walls are cracked and the wood is exposed and hazardous. Our electrical system needs modernizing. Most importantly, the building wasn’t designed with early learners in mind. To be blunt, open plan buildings and young children aren’t a safe combination. We can do better.

Please join me in voting yes for this bond.

Weather Watcher: Winter Storm Warning has been issued

December 1, 2007, Shoreline, Washington.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Winter Storm Warning covering the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park area. The Warning was issued at 10:26am Sunday morning and is in effect from 6pm Sunday evening until 4pm Monday afternoon. This is our first Winter Storm Warning since January 17, 2012.

The forecast from the National Weather Service is on board with what I was expecting during my write up last night with 3-6 inches possible, some locations might even get up to 8 inches of snow. Most of the snow is expected to start falling after 6pm Sunday evening and continue through 4pm Monday afternoon.

Beyond Monday afternoon the forecast is still calling for snow showers lasting through Monday night. Tuesday and Wednesday is expecting to see snow showers, maybe mixed with rain during the afternoons until a warm up Wednesday night into Thursday.

Bottom line: Be prepared for lasting winter weather conditions that could be present well into Thursday.

Frank Workman the 'Voice of Shorecrest Sports' honored at Hoopapalooza

Dori Monson, radio personality and SC girls' basketball coach
conducted the ceremony honoring Frank Workman

Frank Workman was surprised at the Hoopapalooza basketball games he was announcing with a special ceremony honoring his years of work in local high school sports.

Don Dalziel, Athletic Director for the Shoreline School District, has the following to say about Frank:

Frank Workman Fun Facts by Don Dalziel:

The Ultimate Shorecrest Super Fan turned School District Public Address guy

Started attending Shorecrest High School events when his son Tim was in grade school in the late 90’s and became a SC Little Buddy with the football team.

Became a full-fledged, full time SC girls basketball fan in 2002 when son Tim served as a manager for the team. Since then, I’m not sure if he has missed too many home games and attends most of the away games as well in recent years.

Not sure on what number of SC girls basketball games he has attended, but if you count 20 girls' basketball games in a season, and multiply that by 15 seasons that equals 300 games. Not counting post season or any other game he goes to just for fun!

l-r Head basketball coaches George Edwards and Brian Fischer of Shorecrest
flank Dori Monson and Frank Workman at ceremony honoring
Frank's years to service to high school sports, particularly Shorecrest

Has now been announcing for District events in Basketball, Football, Soccer, Wrestling and Track and Field. Has been the Voice at Shoreline stadium and Shorecrest. This year alone Frank will have announced 40 girls and boys Soccer games for both Shorecrest and Shorewood, 10 home football games, 10 track meets, 20 home basketball games for a total of 80 plus contests … and that’s just the regular season. Throw in post season events and he is way over 100 events a year that he “gets” to announce.

Favorite line: I don't know how many times I have heard Frank say “ How much do I have to pay you to do this today?”

Frank is the definition of professional. If there is something he can help with, he will do it. When we ask him to be a “neutral announcer” for post events, He can do it.

Frank is truly a class act, and passionate for all things Shoreline. Wishing him well moving forward.

---

In addition, Frank works with the video club at Shorecrest, as they tape and broadcast school sports. He writes "Frank Workman on Sports" articles for the Shoreline Area News as well as writing regular sports reports.

And another fun fact: Frank is the one who tagged the annual all team Shorecrest - Shorewood basketball day "Hoopapalooza".

WeatherWatcher: Snow in the forecast, this could be our winter storm

The snow forecast is becoming louder and clearer these past two days. It's looking much more likely now that we will see a significant snow event Sunday night into Monday and beyond. There is still some uncertainty in temperatures getting cold enough but most models seem to think that we'll see between 3-6 inches of snow.

Most of the snow is expected to start accumulating probably several hours after dark Sunday evening. The timing is still uncertain, so it could very well change over to snow before dark or after midnight.

Snow is expected to taper off into showers around 4pm Monday afternoon. Tuesday and Wednesday also seem to be leaning towards a snow/rain mix or snow shower pattern before we warm up Thursday with a warmer Pacific storm moving in.

Of all the arctic events we've had so far this winter, the forecast models for this one have been the most consistent from as far out as 4 days ago, all leaning towards snow. Generally this is looking like a much better shot at getting snow than previous cold events this winter.

Bottom line: Prepare for winter weather, it is likely but there is still a 30% or so chance that we will not get accumulating snow. Plan for the heaviest snow to fall Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. At this time there are no winter weather watches or warnings in effect but I suspect that will change Sunday morning or afternoon.

Geneva Norton and Maren Norton

Geneva Norton has been standing on street corners waving signs for thirty-five years and now her daughter Maren has joined her.

Geneva is a long time PTA volunteer and school supporter, including chairing and serving on levy / bond committees.

Maren is a former school board member who is chairing this year's bond levy committee. Both are quick to point out the hundreds of volunteers they have worked with to support the schools.

A lot of this year's volunteers are shown in this slide show.

Check it out and see who you know who's standing on a corner, waving a sign to encourage people to vote for Shoreline Schools - and return their ballots before February 14.

Taiwan–U.S. Relations - speaker from Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle

The Global Affairs Center of Shoreline Community College presents . . .

Taiwan–U.S. Relations

Vincent C.H. Yao, Director-General, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Seattle

February 9, 2017, 11:30am–12:30pm

Shoreline Community College, Room 9208
16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133

In 1979, when the United States and the People’s Republic of China established formal diplomatic relations and opened embassies in each other’s capitol, U.S. relations with the Republic of China, or Taiwan, changed.

Taiwan’s embassy in Washington, D.C. became a “Representative Office,” and its consulates throughout the U.S., including the one here in Seattle, became “Economic and Cultural Offices.”

Nonetheless, according to the U.S. Department of State’s current Taiwan Fact Sheet, "The United States and Taiwan enjoy a robust unofficial relationship.”

Director General Yao will discuss Taiwan’s relationship with the U.S. and the role of his office in advancing understanding and commercial relations in the Pacific Northwest.

This event is FREE, although there is a small fee for parking on campus during the day. To save a seat, go to the calendar page for this event and click on Sign Up.
