SW Girls stifle Shorecrest in Hoopapalooza, 46-30

Shorewood 46 - Shorecrest 30

The basketball rule book says you only have to play five players at a time.

Shorewood's girls basketball coach Mark Haner took it literally Saturday night as his starting lineup played the whole game in the T-Birds' 46-30 win over rival Shorecrest in the Scots gym in Hoopapalooza 2017.

The five are Davi Borromeo, Ledia Musye, Bella Hotham, Katie Taylor, and Taryn Shelley. Shelley led all scorers with 20 points, and she was first to give credit to her teammates.

Shorewood's Katie Taylor puts up
a shot from just outside the key in
early game action.

"Katie and Davi played controlled and were able to handle their pressure very well," said the WSU-bound senior center after the game.

"And Bella and Ledia worked hard down low and were scrappy on defense. Shorecrest is always tough, but it was a good win and I'm proud of my team".

Indeed, Taylor and Hotham were demons on the boards and defense, repeatedly stealing Scots' passes to the low post and blocking shots, holding the Scots far below their season average of 50 points.

In fact, with the Scots desperately trying to rally in the final quarter, SW held them to a single basket.

With the win, the T-Birds have thrown the WesCo 3A standings into a quagmire, with four teams (SW, SC, Snohomish, and Marysville-Getchell) tied for second place at 7-2, behind Lynnwood (9-0).

Only three games remain in the regular season. The T-Birds host Arlington Wednesday and Marysville-Getchell on Friday (Senior Night) , before ending league play at Snohomish on Monday February 6.

The Scots travel to Snohomish Wednesday and Arlington Friday, before hosting Stanwood on their Senior Night, Monday February 6.

Third Place Books - authors talk about serial killers, living your dream, and using cannibis

Three presentations this week at Third Place Books. Authors with new books will discuss their work and sign your copies.

Third Place Books is on the upper level of Town Center at the intersection of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park.

Claudia Rowe
The Spider and the Fly : A Reporter, a Serial Killer, and the Meaning of Murder
Tuesday, January 31 at 7pm

In September 1998, young reporter Claudia Rowe was working as a stringer for the New York Times in Poughkeepsie, New York, when local police discovered the bodies of eight women stashed in the attic and basement of the small colonial home that Kendall Francois, a painfully polite twenty-seven-year-old community college student, shared with his parents and sister.

In this superb work of literary true crime --a spellbinding combination of memoir and psychological suspense-a female journalist chronicles her unusual connection with a convicted serial killer and her search to understand the darkness inside us.

Electrifying, heartfelt, and full of humor, Unbound is the story of Steph Jagger's odyssey of courage and self-discovery: a journey that, like Wild and Eat, Pray, Love, will inspire readers to remove their own restraining devices and pursue the life they are meant to lead.

Echo Lake Elementary 5th graders taught by Karen Nicholson and Allan Rand traveled to the state capitol on Monday, January 23rd to help kick off a Washington State Civics Learning Initiative.

The 2017 Civic Learning Initiative Summit One was held at the Temple of Justice and the General Administration Building auditorium and was developed by The Council on Public Legal Education of Washington.

The Storypath curricula was developed out of concern that youth were uninformed about the workings of democracy or that they even have a role to play in their government.

Numerous national studies have shown a strong disconnect between American youth and civic engagement.

“A democracy thrives when its citizens vote, show up for jury duty, engage in public life, are aware of civic issues, listen to other viewpoints, and interact with lawmakers,” said Margaret Fisher, a member of the Council on Public Legal Education and the lead coordinator for the Civic Learning Initiative.

Fisher is also a staff member of the Administrative Office of the Courts as coordinator for education and outreach efforts.

The two classes have participated in a Social Studies Storypath on the election process, learning about our government, political parties, platforms, the electoral college and culminating with the election of a president in each of the two classrooms.

The classes were invited to the capitol to have the two presidents sworn in by State Supreme Court Chief Justice, Mary Fairhurst, in the Temple of Justice in Olympia.

The presidential swearing-in will be one of the highlights of a unique summit in Olympia kicking off an ambitious Civic Learning Initiative in Washington — a statewide effort to improve civic education for all Washington students with the help of community groups, judges, businesses, government officials and advocates, as well as schools. --Full Court Press

After the swearing in ceremony the students had an opportunity to meet the Chief Justice and Governor Jay Inslee, chat and take photos.

The group was then able to tour the capitol, including the governor’s office, the House and Senate, and participate in a mock judicial hearing.

The Echo Lake students were the only students in the state invited to participate in this event.

Germany’s perspective on the United States

U.S. and Germany relationship
The Global Affairs Center of Shoreline Community College presents Dr. Frank Wendler speaking on Germany’s perspective on the United States

While the United States continues to be a key political partner and ally in Europe, new challenges have arisen recently, including:
  • The future economic, political and military partnership between Europe and the U.S.
  • The rise of populist politics and anti-immigrant rhetoric in both the U.S. and Europe

Dr. Wendler is Visiting Professor, Department of Political Science and the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington.

Dr. Wendler recently published a book about European regional politics and political polarization, and argues that recent developments, including the rise of populism in both the U.S. and in Europe, reflect long-standing challenges since the end of the Cold War rather than entirely new ones

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles fuels student success with major donation to SCC’s MOPAR CAP program

MOPAR CAP
Shoreline Community College MOPAR CAP (Motor Parts Career Automotive Program) students will take their learning to the next level thanks to a generous donation from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

The FCA donation included 21 pallets of the latest automotive technology, such as engines, transmissions, transaxles, and axles.

The donated components help give Shoreline’s students a leg up in the industry, as the components are the same caliber as what students will encounter during their cooperative learning experience in the dealerships and well into their careers as automotive technicians.

“Part of the uniqueness of our program is the relationship we have with auto manufacturers,” said Michael Boehm, Director of Dealer Services and Manufacturer Relations for Shoreline’s Professional Automotive Training Center – Dealer Training Academy.
“Our industry partners recognize that we educate and train some of the top automotive workers graduating today, and their donations ensure that we are able to maintain that high level of training and provide them with the top notch talent they need.”

The FCA donation allows students to stay up to date with emerging vehicle technology, diagnostic equipment, and service information from one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, further ensuring their employment and earning potential out of the program.

The MOPAR CAP program at Shoreline is a two-year, Associate in Applied Arts and Sciences (AAAS) degree that includes rotations between class time and on-site training at sponsoring Chrysler Group dealerships under the direction of a master technician.

Letter to the Editor: 16,002 votes needed on February 14

To the Editor,

Are you ready to cast your ballot? Shoreline needs 16,002 votes to validate the Shoreline School District Bond measure on February 14th. This number represents 40 percent of the number of ballots cast in the district during the last general election and is the state mandated threshold for validating any bond proposal.

The bond measure (a.k.a. Proposition 1) is the only item on the ballot and would support rebuilding Kellogg Middle School, Einstein Middle School, Parkwood Elementary, and building an Early Learning Center at the current Children’s Center site.

By rebuilding these schools, we will ensure that our facilities adequately support what our students and teachers need. Some of the improvements to the new facilities include: increased capacity to lessen overcrowding; expanded and enhanced early learning opportunities; increased safety and security; improved plumbing, roofing, windows and other structural enhancements; facilities for technology, science labs and other learning environments that support high levels of student achievement; and improved traffic patterns in and out of schools and neighborhoods.

Have you seen the red, yellow and black “Vote Yes Shoreline” signs? They are popping up all over Shoreline as the February 14 special election day draws near. Even if you feel this bond measure does not affect you because you don’t have children or they won’t attend these schools, please consider the effect new school buildings have on the overall community.

Voting to approve this bond measure is just another way that Shoreline residents can demand the best for their city and schools.

Show your love for Shoreline schools and vote to approve this bond!

Shoreline driver arrested for DUI was six times the legal limit

On January 26, 2017 at 10:54, Trooper Shannon McKenzie arrested a Shoreline man who was determined to be 6 times the legal limit of intoxication.

This incident began 10:22am when the Washington State Patrol dispatchers received a call from a citizen advising that a silver Volvo was traveling in an erratic manner NB I-5 in the area of 145th. Trooper McKenzie was in the area and was attempting to locate this vehicle when he observed a Volvo parked in the grass area just off the shoulder of NB I-5 at 236th.

Trooper McKenzie made contact with the vehicle at 10:45am and observed that the driver was unresponsive with the vehicle running, in drive and his foot on the brake.

Trooper McKenzie put the vehicle in park and turned the ignition off and removed the keys. The driver could not be woken up so Trooper McKenzie called for the Fire Department. Once they arrived they extracted the driver from the vehicle and transported him to Northwest Hospital.

Trooper McKenzie was able to identify the individual as Neil T. Ehlers, 31 years old from Shoreline, Washington. Due to the driving, open containers in the vehicle along with other information that was obtained, Trooper McKenzie placed Ehlers in custody for investigation of DUI.

Trooper McKenzie later discovered from the hospital that Ehlers blood alcohol level was .480 which is 6 times the legal limit of .080. It was also determined that Ehlers had 3 previous DUIs in another state. Trooper McKenzie obtained and executed a search warrant for blood and subsequently released Ehlers to Northwest Hospital due to the high level of blood alcohol.

The Washington State Patrol would like to remind drivers to stay alert at all times of the day for impaired drivers. Most importantly, DRIVE SOBER !

School bond info pamphlets delayed in the mail for 98133 and 98177

Shoreline Public Schools has become aware that a number of households in the school district, primarily in the 98133 and 98177 zip codes serviced by the Bitter Lake Post Office, have not yet or only recently received their School Bond Informational Pamphlet.

These informational mailers were delivered to local post offices on January 10, 2017 and should have been delivered to mailboxes within 3-5 days. We have communicated this problem to the Bitter Lake Post Office and they are working to identify and correct the issue to ensure timely deliveries in the future.

Because some community members did not receive the pamphlet in time to attend the community presentations advertised in the mailer, the District will host two more informational presentations.

They will be held on Tuesday, January 31 at 10am and Wednesday, February 1 at 6pm in the Boardroom at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave. NE.

Additionally, you can find more information and view a video of a previously recorded informational presentation on the school district website. You can also contact the District with any questions you have at 206-393-4412

Hoopapalooza Saturday - all day basketball-fest between Shorewood and Shorecrest

T-Bird Taryn Shelley
By Frank Workman

This Saturday marks the 8th annual Hoopapalooza, the all-day basketball-fest between our district's two teams, Shorewood and Shorecrest, culminating in the varsity girls facing off at 5, and the boys squaring off at 7.

This year it will be held at Shorecrest, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

There are very few other games on the high school docket Saturday, so the basketball cognoscenti can be expected to descend on the Scots gym, as well as locals who might only get out to see
one game a year.

If the games themselves aren't enough to lure fans to reacquaint themselves with friends and neighbors, then the promise of tantalizing food should do the trick.

Taqueria Tonita Taco Truck and Daddy’s Donuts will be setting up shop in the courtyard right outside the gym, while the SC Boosters already have meatballs marinating for the occasion .... meaning all the major food groups are included.
And, as always, the best gym popcorn you will ever eat sells for only a dollar at the concession stand. Add a box of Junior Mints to your popcorn and you'll be onto the taste sensation that's sweeping the nation.

Scot Jazlyn Owens
The Varsity girls game figures to be hotly contested. Both teams are vying for the top spot in the WesCo standings. Shorecrest is 7-1 in league (11-5 overall), while Shorewood is a game behind at 6-2 (14-2).

With District playoffs only 2 weeks away, this game will be pivotal in determining playoff seedings.

SW emerged victorious in their non-league meeting on December 8, 47-35.

The T-Birds feature 6' 2" senior Taryn Shelley, a WSU-commit.

The Scots, last year's 2A State Champions, are led by senior guard Jazlyn Owens.

The nightcap features two teams with opposite records.

The SW boys have struggled under first year coach George Edwards, going 1-7 in league play, 1-15 overall, while the Scots are 7-1/15-1 this season.

The Scots cruised to a 73-58 win at SW on December 12. They are led by 6' 8" junior Phillip Pepple, 6' 3" senior Malcolm Rosier-Butler, and 6' 2" junior Chris Lee.

While it may look like a mismatch on paper, expect the T-Birds to be scrappy as heck, knowing nothing would please their fans more than to knock off their arch-rival.

AG files lawsuit against student loan agency for predatory practices

Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit January 18 against student loan servicer Navient Corporation, an offshoot of education-finance giant Sallie Mae.

In addition, Ferguson also announced his agency-request Student Loan Bill of Rights legislation, introduced this session, to provide more resources for students and establish standards for student loan servicers like Navient.

“Enormous student-loan debt is an issue for many Washingtonians,” Ferguson said. “I will hold companies accountable when they treat borrowers unfairly.”

The lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court, accuses Navient, the nation’s largest student-loan servicer, of a number of unfair and deceptive practices. Those practices included improperly steering financially distressed students toward short-term forbearances, engaging in aggressive and misleading collection tactics and more.

While operating as Sallie Mae, Navient made subprime, predatory loans to students attending for-profit colleges with graduation rates lower than 50 percent, despite clear expectations that an extremely high percentage of students would not be able to repay them. Navient made these subprime loans as part of “preferred lending” programs with schools in order to gain access to highly profitable federally-guaranteed loan volume and “prime” private student loan borrowers.

The lawsuit may potentially impact thousands of Washingtonians, including anyone who received private student loans from Sallie Mae prior to 2009 and anyone who has their loan serviced by Navient and has experienced the alleged conduct.

Student loan borrowers who believe that they have been subject to these, or other, unfair or deceptive practices by Sallie Mae or Navient are encouraged to file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office.

Anyone with questions about student loan servicers should read the Attorney General’s new student loan guide.

Ferguson urges students with questions about consolidating federal student loans to contact the Department of Education’s Loan Consolidation Information Call Center at 1-800-557-7392 before applying for consolidation.
