Public Heath: You should still sign up for health insurance

Public Health of Seattle and King County answers the question: "Should I still sign up for health insurance in the current political climate?"

Yes, is their answer. In a recent blog post, Keith Seinfeld wrote,
Ever since the election, people are wondering whether their health insurance coverage will survive next year, if the Affordable Care Act (sometimes called “Obamacare”) is targeted for repeal.
The short answer is, Yes. Your insurance should stay the same all through 2017, whether you are enrolled through the Washington Health Benefit Exchange or through Washington Apple Health (Medicaid).
Open Enrollment has already started, for people with incomes that qualify for discounted plans on the Exchange. There are two deadlines coming up. The first deadline – to complete an application for coverage that starts in January – will be December 15th.  The final deadline is January 31, 2017.
People who buy coverage now should feel confident that it is good for all of 2017 – no matter what happens.

The article continues with his explanation of why this is. Read it here.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: The Prom Goer's Interstellar Excursion

The Prom Goer's Interstellar Excursion
by Chris McCoy

Bennett has always loved Sophie from a distance, but he never really talked to her until the night her motorcycle broke down and they ended up walking together in the New Mexico desert. Minutes after he gathers the courage to ask her to the prom -- and she accepts -- Sophie is abducted by aliens.

Following the close encounter, Bennett does the logical thing: he goes for a burger at the local In-N-Out. But the restaurant has just sold all the food in the building to a psychedelic band bus, and in short order, Bennett is on board the bus with the Perfectly Reasonable, the one-billion sixteenth most popular band in the universe.

Will Sophie ever escape from the Ecological Center for the Preservation of Lesser Species?
Will the teens ever return to earth?
Will bandleader Skark Zelirium ever write a new song?

Will somebody please hand me a Babelfish?

This is the book that Douglas Adams would have written if he were writing for a teen audience. (And if he was an American. And if he had ever been sober sometimes.)

It's cute, funny, quirky, and strange. It's not nearly as funny as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but since nothing in the Universe is as funny as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it's not unkind to say so. There's the sweet romance between two kids who are dying to get out of Gordo, New Mexico, and what happens after.

Also, there's a ram in the closet. Just in case you wondered.
Action, cussing (mild), dancing, drinking, guys, high school, humor, kissing, longing, music, no sex, rock and roll, science fiction

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

Endowment fund honors memory of UW Bothell student killed in Mukilteo

Anna Bui
The family of Anna Bui, the University of Washington Bothell student who was fatally shot at a gathering in Mukilteo, is starting an endowment fund in her memory that would offer scholarships to other students at the University.

Anna’s older siblings, David and Anny Bui, say the study abroad scholarship will assist students whose interests are similar to their adventurous sister’s – those who want to experience what the world has to offer and, at the same time, enrich the lives of others.

The Anna Bui World of Hope Fund will help students who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of such a transformational experience.

Anna didn’t study abroad, but she did travel in Europe for three weeks over the summer, much of the time with her sister.

“And that’s the happiest I’ve seen her,” Anny said. Anna wanted to study abroad to improve her high school Spanish.

The endowment is one way to give back in Anna’s name, said David Bui.

“Anna always had her way with people; it’s hard not to like her. It could be anyone from her employer to someone she just met traveling the world,” he said.

A few weeks after her summer travel, the 19-year-old Everett resident was attending a gathering with friends from Kamiak High School when she and two other people were killed.

One of the other people killed was 19 year old Jake Long, who was an employee at Shoreline Community College.

Jake worked as an employee of Lancer Hospitality on campus and was known by many as a bright and friendly staff member who specialized in making delicious wraps and sandwiches with care for our community each day.

In The Garden Now….. Carriere Hawthorn Tree

Lavalle Hawthorn
Text and photo by Victoria Gilleland

I turned the corner and there it was … a Lavalle Hawthorn Tree loaded with big beautiful clusters of striking orange-red berries.

Berries can be seen from the lowest branches up into the canopy of the tree. The fruit, also called haws or thornapples, is typically held well into February in our area if the birds don’t get the berries first!

Shiny green leaves turn a bronze red and then drop from the tree. Spring brings large clusters of lovely white flowers.

This is an attractive, interesting tree year round.

Hawthorn trees do have thorns but Lavalle’s Hawthorn has fewer than most. Trees typically reach 20 to 30 feet high and 15 to 20 feet wide after many years.

Trees are sometimes used as “Street Trees” since they tend to have non aggressive root systems that don’t interfere with drive and walkways.

When you’re in the market for an easy to grow tree offering year round color check out this handsome option!

(Botanical Name: Crataegus, x lavallei )

Victoria Gilleland is the owner of Cottage Garden Designs, a Garden Design company specializing in Redesign of Residential Gardens, Garden Consultation and Coaching. She has been designing gardens in the northwest for over 20 years.

King County Executive Dow Constantine outlines potential impacts of Trump Administration

King County Executive
Dow Constantine
Following the election of Donald Trump as president, King County Executive Dow Constantine asked his Cabinet for a full review of federal funding and policies.

President-elect Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have made policy statements regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), domestic programs, environmental priorities and infrastructure spending.

At a news briefing following a meeting of Executive Constantine’s cabinet, four department leaders outlined key federal programs:
  • Patty Hayes, Director, Public Health – Seattle and King County
  • Adrienne Quinn, Director, Department of Community and Human Services
  • Christie True, Director, Department of Natural Resources and Parks
  • Rob Gannon, General Manager, King County Metro

Among the top concerns for King County are:
  • More than 200,000 people in King County could be at risk for losing their health insurance if the ACA is repealed or diminished.
  • Demand for public health clinics could rise. Last year, 90,000 King County residents accessed basic health services through 10 Public Health Centers and about 20 satellite operations.
  • Mental health and substance abuse funding contained in the ACA could be reduced.
  • Funding for Department of Housing and Urban Development could be reduced, impacting homelessness programs.
  • Federal coal leasing programs could allow for more coal extraction. Federal agencies could allow more oil and coal terminals.
  • Environmental policies could change to open more coastlines and wildlife refuges to oil and natural gas drilling.
  • Increased infrastructure spending may provide opportunities to fix local roads and bridges, including the 41 King County bridges considered functionally obsolete and 16 that are structurally deficient.

“A lot gets said in the heat of a very long campaign. If we are to take President-elect Trump and the Republicans who control Congress at their word, there is reason to be concerned,” said Executive Constantine.

“We are an innovative, prosperous region that embraces pluralism and diversity. The next Congress and the White House need to know what’s at stake for our region. Whatever happens in Washington, DC, our region will continue to move forward, and outward to the rest of the world, building a welcoming community, a strong economy, and a healthy environment.”

Reader question: What will Shoreline Prop 1 cost me?

A reader had a question about Shoreline's Prop 1, which is passing with a 67% Yes vote as of 11-17-2016.

So on a 400,000 house ... which is almost the average cost of a home, it would cost the taxpayer $556 more each year in property tax??? and people wonder why rents are high! Is my Math correct???

Sara Lane, Administrative Services Director for the City of Shoreline, responded.

Thank you for your question. Your math is not exactly correct. The additional amount that a homeowner of a $400,000 home will pay in 2017 as a result of Proposition 1 is $64.
With the passage of the levy lid lift renewal the total amount that a homeowner would pay to the City of Shoreline on a home valued at $400,000 in 2017 would be $556.
Proposition 1 restored the property tax rate to $1.39 in 2017 and allows the City’s Levy to grow by CPI (i.e. “inflation”) for the next 5 years.
Had Proposition 1 not passed, the amount paid to the City of Shoreline on a $400,000 home would be an estimated $492 in 2017 – as I noted, a difference of $64 per year.
Property tax is the largest operating revenue source for the City, supporting critical services like public safety, parks and recreation, and community services. Without the passage of Proposition 1, the City would have been forced to reduce non-mandatory services in order to balance its annual operating budget.
Thank you to the Shoreline voters for supporting Proposition 1 and allowing the City to maintain our current levels of service to the community!

The review ensures best practice policies are being followed, training standards and department policy is in line with national best practice, and much more.

In Washington State, there are only 63 accredited police departments out of the more the 300 departments.

This accreditation is good for four years, however over the next four years we will continue to keep a sharp focus on maintaining the high standards in policing expected by our community.

Use caution to avoid scammers pretending to be Seattle City Light

City Light has produced a video to help
customers avoid being scammed
Watch it here
Seattle City Light is reminding customers to protect their personal financial information to avoid becoming a victim of scammers posing as City Light employees.

City Light produced a video with the Seattle Police Department with tips on how to protect yourself. Watch it here.

When a customer is past due on a bill, Seattle City Light will take steps to notify the customer multiple times before shutting off power.

Seattle City Light will always direct customers to the secure online payment system or to call 206-684-3000 to make a payment.

Seattle City Light employees will never ask for payment in person and will always be able to produce identification if informing a customer in-person of a past-due bill.

During winter, scammers may attempt to take advantage of the perfect storm of higher heating bills that come with lower temperatures. Scammers may demand thousands of dollars and threaten to shut off power if payment isn’t made immediately.

Vulnerable residents, including non-English speaking individuals, elderly people, and small-business owners may be targeted by scammers. These threats can take place over the phone, by email or in person at customer homes and businesses. Some scammers use caller ID impersonating Seattle City Light’s customer service number to convince customers that they are talking to the utility.

“We have a great team that works hard to make sure your service is provided safely and securely,” says Kelly Enright, Director of Customer Care at Seattle City Light. “If you’re ever in doubt when you receive a suspicious call, hang up and reach out to us directly. By initiating the call, you’ll have more confidence in who you’re speaking with on the other end of the line.”

If customers have concerns about the validity of a contact and want to ensure they’re talking to Seattle City Light, they are encouraged to call Seattle City Light directly at 206-684-3000. Learn more about how to avoid becoming a victim here

In September 2014, Metro reduced evening and night service on Route 331, which connects Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Shoreline, and the Shoreline Community College campus.

Now Metro's Alternative Demonstration Program is working with the communities of Lake Forest Park, Shoreline, and Shoreline Community College to identify transit gaps that might have been created by this reduction.

Do you live, work, or go to school in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park? Tell us about how you use or would like to use public transportation to get around.

Complete the online survey by November 27, 2016 to help Metro learn about transit gaps after September 2014 cuts to Route 331.

Mr. Scrooge opens Nov 25 at Driftwood Players in Edmonds

Edmonds Driftwood Players announces its 2016 Holiday show - Mr. Scrooge - based on the Charles Dickens' classic tale about the crusty Ebenezer Scrooge - a man who doesn't know how to keep Christmas.

The added dimensions of musical treatment make this a particularly enjoyable new way of presenting this grand story of hardhearted Ebenezer Scrooge, who hates Christmas and is visited successively by three ghosts: the ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future.

They bring revelations to Scrooge, mainly about himself, and he's shocked into taking action to care for his employee, Bob Cratchit and his family which includes brave, little, crippled Tiny Tim. The songs are varied and catchy and Driftwood has put its own unique industrial or steampunk flair to the costumes and set design.

Featuring the talents of: Chloe Cook, Sydney Kaser, Stephanie Kroschel, Karsten Lomax, Patrick Lucey-Conklin, Elise McFarland, Laura McFarlane, Jonathan Olson, Griffin Price, Jeff Strom, Kevin Tanner, Margaret West, Randy West, and Amelie Whitesell.

This show is directed by Kylie McKenzie Soder, a graduate of Cornish Institute in Seattle who has served as a directing intern at A Contemporary Theater (ACT) in Seattle. Mr. Scrooge is musically directed by Mark Press and supported by producers Kevin Starkey and Katie Soule with stage management by Daniel Ha.
