Silver Kite’s “Umbrella” engages community audiences through intergenerational performance

Silver Kite performance
When do you feel safe and sheltered? When is your umbrella open, or closed? Have you ever been caught without an umbrella? Silver Kite's Intergenerational Theatre Company explores these questions through an original storytelling performance created from the cast's life stories.

Silver Kite Community Arts launched a King County tour of its original intergenerational theatre production of “Umbrella” on November 12, 2016. The production will tour to area retirement communities, community centers, senior centers, non-profit organizations, and schools from November 12 until January 31, 2017.

“Umbrella” will also be performed for the public at the Seattle Center Armory on January 20 & 21, 2016 at 7:30pm. Tickets for the public performances of "Umbrella" are available on Brown Paper Tickets.

Based on the life stories of its five intergenerational cast members, ages 17 to 80, “Umbrella” explores how a common object can reflect memories and inspire connections across generations.

The performance includes personal story monologues, original scenes, music, and dance, all designed to spark the memories of audience members. Following the 50 minute performance, the audience is engaged in a conversation with the actors, inviting them to share their personal stories related to the themes and stories shared during the performance.

To create the show, the cast began by sharing and recording stories, finding connections with one another. They then collectively sifted through the stories and collaborated to turn them into scenes, movement and music pieces.

Silver Kite believes sharing life stories can help break down age-related stereotypes and build stronger communities.

Cast member Xanne Sarka, 48, agrees: “No matter the age, there is always something one can gain from hearing each other’s life stories. Participating in Silver Kite’s Intergenerational Theatre Company has raised my awareness of the healing power that is embedded in the act of both sharing and hearing each other’s stories.”

“Umbrella” is the fourth performance created by Silver Kite’s Intergenerational Theatre Company. Each production uses a different cast of actors, with each person in the cast in a different decade of life from the others. Prior Silver Kite Intergenerational Theatre Company performances of “A String,” “Wheel,” and “Chairs” were enjoyed by over 1,300 audience members throughout the region.

Silver Kite is currently booking tour performances of “Umbrella” for the months of December and January. The performance is fifty minutes long with a post play discussion with the audience. Email Zoe Wilson, Intergenerational Theatre Company Manager, to book a tour.

For more information call 206-291- 0886.

Passage of ST3 means funding for local projects

Sound Transit Light Link rail train

What began as a collaborative effort between north Lake Washington cities and the 522TransitNow! Coalition to advocate for three projects along SR 522 – an area neglected in the original ST3 draft proposal – will become a reality thanks to voter approval of the ST3 proposal.

In 2015, the cities of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell and Woodinville worked together to align transit priorities. Members of the coalition spent countless hours attending Sound Transit meetings and spreading awareness about the ST3 process around the community.

Three ST3 projects along the North Lake Washington corridor include:
  1. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on SR 522 and NE 145th Street to connect to the future light rail station at NE 145th St. and I-5. This 8-mile BRT project would design and implement BRT on NE 145th/SR 523 from the Link station at I-5 to SR 522, with BRT treatments continuing on SR 522 to UW Bothell, and with connecting service at lower frequencies to Woodinville. This project is anticipated for completion in 2024.
  2. Parking structures along SR 522 to encourage and enable access to transit. Access improvements include 300-space parking garages near Lake Forest Park (1), Kenmore (1) and Bothell (1). This project is anticipated to be completed between 2019-2024.
  3. Study for future light rail along the 522 corridor. This study would examine options for expanding light rail transit connections across northern Lake Washington that may be needed when ridership demand exceeds available capacity.
In addition, after adding parking in Puyallup and Sumner, Sound Transit will also expand parking in Edmonds and Mukilteo for the Sounder Train along Puget Sound.

Housing Commission finances 170 unit apartments at Bitter Lake

13280 Linden Ave N

The Washington State Housing Finance Commission recently approved $328 million in financing to construct or preserve more than 1,800 units of housing and expand three Seattle-area nonprofits.

“These projects serve a wide range of needs all across the state,” said Karen Miller, chair of the Housing Finance Commission. “We’re pleased to help enhance these communities through housing and facilities.”

The Commission finances affordable housing and other community needs by issuing tax-exempt bonds or notes and allocating Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). Tax-exempt bonds allow developers to borrow at lower interest rates, while the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit allows them to raise capital by selling the credits to investors in return for equity in the project.

This northend project was recently approved by the governor-appointed Commission:

In North Seattle:

Linden Flats at Bitter Lake, 13280 Linden Ave N (GMD Development, $34 million tax-exempt bond, $17.9 million estimated tax-credit equity).

This complex in north Seattle will comprise 170 apartments and several large community spaces. It will also feature a solar thermal system to help keep utility costs low.

On the Mayor's Mind: Thank you, Shoreline voters

Shoreline Mayor
Chris Roberts
By Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts

I want to thank Shoreline voters for passing Shoreline's Proposition 1 and ST3. The passage of both measures will improve our quality of life.

As a Council we are committed to providing efficient, effective services for Shoreline residents and businesses. It is a goal of the Council to increase funding for human services, to ease congestion on Richmond Beach Road, near Shoreline Community College, and on 185th. With the passage of ST3, Shoreline will see a rebuilt 145th Street between Bothell Way and I-5. I am excited about the future of our City.

I am committed to preserving the values and vision that we share and cherish. The vision of the City is “a thriving, friendly city where people of all ages, cultures, and economic backgrounds love to live, work, and play, and most of all, call home.”

We are a community where one of our greatest strengths is its diversity. We must continue to show respect for people of all cultures and backgrounds. We must continue to stand up against bullying and discrimination, wherever it may occur.

We are a community where one of our greatest strengths is the care and compassion we share with one another. We must remain committed to ensuring that all Shoreline residents feel welcomed, loved, and safe. We must comfort those in our community that may be hurting or scared.

We are a community where one of our greatest strengths is our commitment to equity and equality. We must continue to confront injustice and support efforts that provides people greater security and opportunities to fulfill their pursuit of happiness.

I am confident that our City will remain dedicated to our ideas and an advocate for the values we share and a champion for the people of our community.

City of Kenmore passes first bond measure in city history

Nearly 20 million in safety and trail improvements now approved for bicyclists and walkers, along with improvements to waterfront.

The passage of Kenmore’s bond measure Proposition 1 Walkways and Waterways Improvements marks the first city bond measure ever on the ballot in the City of Kenmore, which was incorporated in 1998.

Proposition 1 Walkways and Waterways Improvements is a pedestrian and bicycle safety and waterfront park improvement bond measure that required 60 percent voter approval. As of the latest count, King County Elections results showed Proposition 1 passing with 64 percent voter approval.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to improve safety on a major roadway and also enhance waterfront access and the natural beauty at three of Kenmore’s parks, which is what residents have advocated for since incorporation,” said Mayor David Baker.

Through an extensive community input process known as “Imagine Kenmore,” Kenmore residents confirmed that safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists and connecting residents with the City’s public open space and waterfront are top priorities.

The five projects included in the bond measure reflect the results of the public input. Proposition 1 authorizes the City to issue up to $19.75 million in bonds to be repaid over a period of 20 years from the date of each bond series to pay for the following projects to be constructed over the next seven years:

  1. 68th Avenue Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
    1. New sidewalk and buffered bike lanes on 68th Avenue connecting downtown Kenmore at 182nd Street to the northern city limit.
  2. Juanita Drive Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
    1. New sidewalk and buffered bike lanes on Juanita Drive from the Kirkland city limit north to 170th Street / Simonds Road.
    2. Other improvements include adding or extending selected left turn lanes, and improving the curve at NE 155th Place.
  3. Log Boom Park Waterfront Access and Viewing
    1. Improve public access to Lake Washington including beach expansion, new trails and viewpoints, picnic areas, waterfront pavilion, environmental enhancements, and access for hand-powered watercraft.
  4. Rhododendron Park Waterfront and Natural Open Space Access
    1. Improve public access to the Sammamish River by constructing a new trail and boardwalk to connect the existing playfield through the natural open space to the riverfront and future dock.
    2. The project will also include improving the access drive and parking near the river, as well as environmental enhancements to the shoreline and wetlands.
  5. Squire’s Landing Park Waterfront and Natural Open Space Access
    1. Eleven acres of new park development to enhance public access to the Sammamish River.
    2. Natural open space restoration, trails, boardwalks, and viewing points will connect the park to the river and adjacent Burke-Gilman Trail along NE 175th Street.
    3. The project will also add new docks, parking and a restroom.

Shoreline resident meets with Sen. Cantwell's staff re airplane noise

By Jean Hilde

My meeting with Senator Maria Cantwell's staffers this past Wednesday regarding the FAA's Next-Gen program and the noise it has created over Shoreline went very well.

They had read the materials I'd sent them before the meeting, actively listened and asked pertinent questions. They brain-stormed with me about what steps might be taken. They also warned that the FAA is notoriously difficult to work with and that anything resembling progress might take a long time.

We agreed that a good first step would be to have noise-monitoring equipment set up in Shoreline.

Currently, the Port of Seattle's northernmost monitoring station is located at the Maple Leaf Reservoir, which is four miles south of Shoreline.

Despite the fact that the FAA identified Shoreline as "central to the area where procedures would be changing north of the airport", the agency has placed no noise equipment here to monitor how Next-Gen's changes are impacting the community.

Sen. Cantwell's staffers will reach out to the Port next week.

A big thank-you to the 50 neighbors who added their names to the list and shared their stories of how they've been affected by Next-Gen. If you'd like to join the list, please send your name and cross streets to jmhilde@earthlink.net.

To give you some background on the FAA's Next-Gen program (and about "Greener Skies", Seatac Airport's version of Next-Gen) I've put together some information which you can read here

What is the VFW?

Once in a while, I am asked what does VFW stand for? Simply it means “Veterans of Foreign Wars” (of the United States).

To be more complete, it means that a member of the VFW is part of an organization where one of the requirements for membership is that they were in combat, i.e. they served militarily for the U.S. in an area, at a time when others were there who had the means and intent to kill them, and who were executing those means with said intent.

VFW members were at one time shot at by an enemy who intended, at minimum, to harm them; and in some cases succeeded.

A component of PTSD is that the affected person was in combat. S/he experienced something horrid, beyond possible physical damage --- causing negative, severe and traumatic mental effects. I would submit that a majority of PTSD cases, were in combat.

Our Buddy Poppy drives --- accept donations --- which fund our own donations. We of the VFW Post 3348 donate to a variety of organizations who assist veterans in need --- all veterans --- regardless if they belong to any veterans organization.

Seattle Times article on Shoreline's Patty Pan Cooperative

Devra Gartenstein
During the summer they expand outside

The Patty Pan Cooperative has become the heart of the Briarcrest Neighborhood. Residents know and now Patty Pan has been discovered by The Seattle Times's Pacific Magazine.

The interior is homey and comfortable
“HONOR THE FARMERS!” read the chalkboard at the five-course feast made from locally grown, seasonal ingredients. Sweet red peppers, roasting in the ovens, made the kitchen smell like harvest season.
With the ingredients list, cooks Devra Gartenstein and Tamara Guyton could have been preparing for any high-end regional dinner: flour milled by Nash’s Organic Produce in Sequim from grains grown in nearby fields, beef from cows raised on sustainable pastures at Winthrop’s Crown S Ranch.
The goal, though, wasn’t glamour. This was The Humble Feast, a monthly community meal prepared by the Patty Pan Cooperative in Shoreline. Ticket prices were $10 in advance for adults, $5 for kids (yes; kids are welcome). At the door, it was $12 and $6, still closer to fast-food prices than standard farm-to-table celebrations.

Dr. Cash, author of Video Games and Your Kids: How Parents Stay in Control, specializes in working with individuals who “need their screen” time.

She was interviewed in the important movie, Screenagers, about the increasing need for parents and kids to set limits on screen time. This program is for parents, adults, and teens. Bring your questions.

Help shape the future of Shoreline’s aquatics and recreation programs

SECURING OUR FOUNDATION; SHAPING OUR FUTURE
Help shape the future of Shoreline’s aquatics and recreation programs

Shoreline’s Plan for Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Public Workshop 3:
Shaping the Future of Our Aquatics and Recreation Programs
Tuesday, November 15
7:00-9:00 p.m.
Shoreline City Hall Council Chambers
17500 Midvale Ave. N

SECURING OUR FOUNDATION depends on our ability to maintain and/or replace facilities in our parks system that are aging, outdated, or vulnerable due to uncertain changes in ownership.

SHAPING OUR FUTURE depends on our ability to provide new park, recreation, and cultural facilities to meet the needs of a growing, increasingly diverse community.

IT HAS BEEN TWENTY-ONE YEARS since Shoreline incorporated. With a robust school district already in place before incorporation, the City worked with Shoreline School District to develop an agreement to jointly share use of facilities to provide aquatics and recreation programming for Shoreline residents. This agreement has served the community well. However, as the School District and the City grow, the certainty of using the School District’s land and facilities for our aquatics and recreation programming is uncertain

The SHORELINE POOL is a 45-year old aquatic facility reaching the end of its useful life. Operated and maintained by the City, it is located on land owned by the School District.

The SPARTAN RECREATION CENTER is operated by the City in the old Shoreline High School building at the Shoreline Center also on land owned by the School District.

The SHORELINE CENTER is located within the 185th Street Light Rail Station Subarea. As the area redevelops, the City’s future use of it is uncertain as the School District weighs its different priorities and options.

TO PREPARE for this uncertainty, the City is developing a feasibility study for the construction of a new combined aquatic and community center.

JOIN US on Tuesday, November 15 to learn more about why we are considering a combined facility; how and where such a facility may be constructed; what are some future aquatic and recreation program needs driving the feasibility study; and review concepts of what these program spaces could look like.

More information here, or contact Park Project Coordinator Maureen Colaizzi at 206-801-2603.
