Shorewood won a tough match with Mountlake Terrace by defeating the Hawks 4-3. In a match up between two state tournament players at number 1 singles, T-Bird Gunnar Thorstenson and Hawk Jeremy Ansdell, Ansdell prevailed 7-6, 7-5. In last year's District 1 singles final Thorstenson defeated Ansdell in straight sets.
The teams were tied 3-3 with only the number 3 singles match, between Shorewood's Andrew Counter and Mountlake Terrace's Jake Peters, left. Counter came from behind after losing the first set and won the next two sets to secure the win for his team.
Also winning for the T-Birds were Jack Stensrud and Ji Yu at number 2 doubles, Andy Johnson and Max Buma at number 3 doubles and freshman Steven Lin at number 4 singles. The Thunderbirds overall record is 5-0 and 2-0 in WesCo South. The Thunderbirds travel to Jackson on Friday September 16th with matches starting at 3:30pm.

Drivers who use the Interstate 5 express lanes will need to use the mainline for most of the morning on both Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18.
To the Editor:
What kind of human beings would sink so low as to hold hostage sufficient funds to fight the Zika virus unless their opponents agree to defund Planned Parenthood? This is obscene. This is extreme misogyny that affects the newborn babies of women infected during pregnancy. Furthermore, it is now known that men can also be infected by Zika-bearing mosquitoes and pass this on to their partners.
To what profoundly immoral depths are Congressional Republicans willing to descend? They’re playing politics with the lives of children born to women who have been infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus.
Instead of passing a straightforward bill to provide the needed emergency funds to fight Zika, they offer only a bill encumbered with add-ons that have absolutely nothing to do with this spreading epidemic but are poison-pills for Democrats who refuse to defund Planned Parenthood, a health care provider that millions of low-income women depend upon for care, especially for reproductive care.
We should all let the Congressional Republicans know that we demand that they end this abominably destructive and immoral delay in funding Zika research.

Especially as we begin a new school year, it is important to remember the value of arts education. For decades, research has shown that when students participate in the arts, they go on to succeed in school, work, and life.
Designated by Congress in 2010, the week beginning with the second Sunday in September is National Arts in Education Week: a national celebration of the transformative power of the arts in education. We are celebrating here at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and encourage all supporters of arts, culture, and education to join us.
The new national Every Student Succeeds Act was signed into law in December 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act. This new bill fully supports the arts as part of every student's "well-rounded" education. It provides the flexibility for students to learn creatively and for local communities to embrace the arts.
What we know is simple: students attend school more often when they have access to the arts.
However, so often we see gaps in access to arts education in communities across our state and the country. In a public opinion poll, 67 percent of Americans believed that there is not sufficient access to the arts for students to reap the benefits.
As we celebrate National Arts in Education Week, let’s take pause to cheer for our accomplishments, but also remember the work we have to do.
We need to provide equitable opportunities for all of our young people and utilize the new law to create arts-rich schools.
We need to support parents, families, and the community by providing more opportunities for engagement. It's up to us —the arts education community —to take a stand and lead.
Kelly Lie
Arts Education Manager

“Many people don’t realize that the price of solar has dropped over 50% in the past five years, so going solar is more achievable than you might think,” said Jill Eikenhorst, project coordinator for Northwest SEED.
“With federal and state incentives and the Solarize discount, solar is an effective way to lock in energy prices and produce clean energy that you can feel good about.”

"King County wants to hear from community members as we plan for possible renewal of the Veterans and Human Services Levy (VHSL). The current VHS Levy will expire at the end of 2017. We will use what we learn from this community conversation as we plan for how the Veterans and Human Services Levy-if renewed next year-can best serve King County residents."
The gardens of Paul and Claire Grace of Shoreline were featured in an article last weekend in The Seattle Times' Pacific Magazine. (A Shoreline garden provides a bounty of food, plus spaces for dining, strolling and artwork)
The article, by Valerie Easton, starts with this:
PAUL AND CLAIRE Grace’s potager (traditional kitchen garden) is so productive that the Shoreline couple shares at harvest time with neighbors and the local food bank. As bountiful as the potager is, peas, beans and tomatoes aren’t all that’s happening in the Grace garden. The half-acre property is divided into rooms, each with its own feel and uses, including spaces for dining, strolling and viewing artwork.

As per WA DOH, "The Growth Management Act requires protection of public groundwater drinking supplies so that tragic events and their associated costs can be prevented and groundwater availability is not compromised. The prevention of groundwater contamination is far less expensive than cleanup or treatment."
