Letter to the Editor: Emergency funding for Zika research

To the Editor:

What kind of human beings would  sink so low as to hold hostage sufficient funds to fight the Zika virus unless their opponents agree to defund Planned Parenthood? This is obscene. This is extreme misogyny that affects the newborn babies of women infected during pregnancy. Furthermore, it is now known that men can also be infected by Zika-bearing mosquitoes and pass this on to their partners.

To what profoundly immoral depths are Congressional Republicans willing to descend? They’re playing politics with the lives of  children born to women who have been infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

Instead of passing a straightforward bill to provide the needed emergency funds to fight Zika, they offer only a bill encumbered with add-ons that have absolutely nothing to do with this spreading epidemic but are poison-pills for Democrats who refuse to defund Planned Parenthood, a health care provider that millions of low-income women depend upon for care, especially for reproductive care.

We should all let the Congressional Republicans know that we demand that they end this abominably destructive and immoral delay in funding Zika research.

Op-Ed: National Arts in Education Week

Especially as we begin a new school year, it is important to remember the value of arts education. For decades, research has shown that when students participate in the arts, they go on to succeed in school, work, and life.

Designated by Congress in 2010, the week beginning with the second Sunday in September is National Arts in Education Week: a national celebration of the transformative power of the arts in education. We are celebrating here at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and encourage all supporters of arts, culture, and education to join us.

The new national Every Student Succeeds Act was signed into law in December 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act. This new bill fully supports the arts as part of every student's "well-rounded" education. It provides the flexibility for students to learn creatively and for local communities to embrace the arts.

What we know is simple: students attend school more often when they have access to the arts.

However, so often we see gaps in access to arts education in communities across our state and the country. In a public opinion poll, 67 percent of Americans believed that there is not sufficient access to the arts for students to reap the benefits.

As we celebrate National Arts in Education Week, let’s take pause to cheer for our accomplishments, but also remember the work we have to do.

We need to provide equitable opportunities for all of our young people and utilize the new law to create arts-rich schools.

We need to support parents, families, and the community by providing more opportunities for engagement. It's up to us —the arts education community —to take a stand and lead.

Sign-up for FINAL Solarize Shoreline Workshop

If you have wanted to attend a Solarize Shoreline workshop, but have not, now is your last chance. Solarize Shoreline will hold its final workshop on Tuesday, September 27, 7:00 to 8:30pm at Shoreline City Hall. Register here

Solarize Shoreline is an initiative to bring solar energy to homes and businesses within the City of Shoreline. It is a limited-time campaign designed to help homeowners and small businesses purchase solar electric systems with a streamlined process and group discount. Solarize Shoreline is a collaborative effort of Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development (Northwest SEED), City of Shoreline, and a team of community volunteers.

A volunteer committee selected Northwest Electric and Solar as the solar installer for the campaign. The committee made its selection through a competitive process. Participants in the campaign will be eligible not only for a group discount, but also for federal and state incentives for solar energy.

“Many people don’t realize that the price of solar has dropped over 50% in the past five years, so going solar is more achievable than you might think,” said Jill Eikenhorst, project coordinator for Northwest SEED.
“With federal and state incentives and the Solarize discount, solar is an effective way to lock in energy prices and produce clean energy that you can feel good about.”

To qualify for a free site assessment and community pricing, interested residents and business owners should attend the final free educational workshop if they have not attended one already. Workshop attendees will learn about the technology; site assessments and installation; costs and incentives; and maintenance. Register here

The workshop is free and open to the public. Residents and businesses in Shoreline are eligible for the group discount.

Rock Art spreads across the region and Shoreline Rocks too

Shoreline Rocks Facebook page
By Maryn Wynne

KUOW just featured a story about Mercer Island Rocks, inspired by Whidbey Island Rocks, and originated by Port Angeles Rocks.

Thinking that Shoreline Rocks too, a quick search shows that there is a newly created Facebook page. Click the link to join this page and participate in the fun.

This activity may inspire the artist or the explorer in you and is a great activity for the whole family.

The idea is to decorate rocks and hide them for neighbors to find. You can give location hints on the Facebook page. Just as fun is the hunt for and finding a tiny work of art.

This rock was found in Hamlin Park on Sept 13th and was rehidden in the park.

The finder photographed and posted the find on the Shoreline Rocks Facebook page.

Here are some tips on decorating, hiding and finding rocks:
  • Join the Shoreline Rocks Facebook page
  • Acrylic paint and paint pens are best for painting.
  • Use a spray paint clear coat over your rocks to keep them more weather resistant.
  • Label the back of the rock Shoreline Rocks on FB
  • Keep the content respectful
  • Don’t hide them on private property
  • Post hints on the Facebook page to help lead people to where you hid them.
  • Most importantly, have FUN! Make memories with your kids, family and community.

Developer fined $452K for overclearing critical area in Richmond Beach development

Downslope view from 12th NW

Sundquist Homes, the developer of the Arden View project on 10th Ave NW, has received a Notice of Violation and Order to Correct from the City of Shoreline. The city found that Sundquist overcleared area identified as a "critical area" (e.g. landslide hazard slope and buffer zones).

The Notice is here.

The city has levied a fine of $452,000 and is requiring Sundquist to submit a new application for a clearing and grading permit, submit a revised critical areas report, and submit and execute a restoration/mitigation plan.

View from 10th NW

Sundquist has appealed the notice and an appeal hearing is scheduled for October 10. The hearing is presided over by an administrative law judge contracted by the city. There lies the possibility that

Sundquist could prevail on appeal, or that the fine could be reduced.

Note that the Notice relates only to overclearing of critical areas and critical buffer zones. Sundquist can continue and has continued work on the three houses that it had begun erecting.

City records show that two calls were received from neighbors about the tree clearing. When investigated, it was determined that the clearing was within that allowed by the permit. The violations occurred after that time.

Veterans and Human Services Levy Community Conversations: An opportunity to share what your community needs

King County has planned a series of community conversations in cities around King County between now and the end of October.

A series of community conversations are being held to:
  • Discuss changes in communities since the VHSL was renewed in 2012
  • Discuss community priorities going forward for veteran and human services
  • Build upon lessons learned in previous community meetings to inform future planning

In North King County, a Shoreline conversation will be held October 5 at 6:30pm in the Shoreline Library Large Meeting Room.

For more information, to register, and to see other dates and cities, see the Flyer with Cities by Date.

From Leo Flor, Veterans and Human Services Levy Renewal Manager:

"King County wants to hear from community members as we plan for possible renewal of the Veterans and Human Services Levy (VHSL). The current VHS Levy will expire at the end of 2017. We will use what we learn from this community conversation as we plan for how the Veterans and Human Services Levy-if renewed next year-can best serve King County residents."

This is an opportunity for community participation to shape the possible renewal of the Veterans and Human Services Levy.

Local garden featured in Times article - and local tour this Saturday

The gardens of Paul and Claire Grace of Shoreline were featured in an article last weekend in The Seattle Times' Pacific Magazine. (A Shoreline garden provides a bounty of food, plus spaces for dining, strolling and artwork)

The article, by Valerie Easton, starts with this:

PAUL AND CLAIRE Grace’s potager (traditional kitchen garden) is so productive that the Shoreline couple shares at harvest time with neighbors and the local food bank. As bountiful as the potager is, peas, beans and tomatoes aren’t all that’s happening in the Grace garden. The half-acre property is divided into rooms, each with its own feel and uses, including spaces for dining, strolling and viewing artwork.

The article, while interesting, is worth viewing just for the photos.

The home in 1936

However, the house is worth seeing as well, which is why the Shoreline Historical Museum chose it for their Trillium Award House and Garden Tour.

The Shoreline Historical Museum is presenting, on Saturday September 17, a tour of the Trillium Heritage Award-winning Perkins/Haworth/Grace Estate, which includes both garden and historic home.

Discover the secrets of this 90 year-old beauty, nestled in the Richmond Highlands back when a few people saw this area as a hide-away from the city, and others saw it as an opportunity to realize the American Dream.

Tickets are on sale on the Shoreline Historical Museum website.

Go to the website or call 206-542-7111 for information. Advance ticket sales only; no day-of-event sales.

Light refreshments and complimentary champagne will be served in the garden - judging from the photos - well worth the price of the tour.

Eight Shoreline Schools students named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Shorewood National Merit Semi-Finalists
Front L-R: Lindsey Ernst, Loren Stephens, Nora Thomas and Andrea Berkbigler.
Back L-R: Principal Bill Dunbar, William Stelter, Thomas Neufeldt and Peter Chou.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced eight seniors in Shoreline Public Schools have been selected as 2017 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

John Sahr, Shorecrest
National Merit Semi-Finalist
Of the over 1.5 million students who entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors, only 16,000 become semifinalists. The semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

The Shoreline students selected for the prestigious honor are:
  • John Sahr (Shorecrest),
  • Andrea Berkbigler (Shorewood),
  • Peter Chou (Shorewood),
  • Lindsey Ernst (Shorewood),
  • Thomas Neufeldt (Shorewood),
  • William Stelter (Shorewood),
  • Loren Stephens (Shorewood)
  • Nora Thomas (Shorewood).
The students now have the opportunity to compete for Merit Scholarship awards by qualifying as a National Merit Finalist in February 2017. About 7,500 Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million will be awarded in this spring.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier qualifying test performance. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

“We are incredibly proud of these students for their work and dedication in achieving such significant honors,” said Superintendent Rebecca Miner. “We are also grateful for the amazing staff and community who continually support the highest levels of success in our school communities.”

From My Edmonds News

Edmonds police took a man into custody just south of Costco in Shoreline Wednesday morning, following a brief pursuit of a stolen Prius that started at 220th Street Southwest and Highway 99 and a vehicle crash at 200th and Highway 99.

According to Edmonds police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hawley, an Edmonds patrol officer driving in the vicinity of 220th Street Southwest and Highway 99 around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when he noticed a vehicle that matched the description of a Prius that had been stolen out of King County. Police chased the vehicle for a minute or two, but due to traffic volumes the pursuit was called off, Hawley said.

The suspect drove across the county line into Shoreline, where he crashed the vehicle a few minutes later. The man ran from the scene, but police found him hiding under a bush in the 19800 block of Highway 99, Hawley said.

The suspect was taken to Swedish Edmonds hospital for an evaluation but did not appear to be injured, said Hawley, adding that no one else was hurt during the incident.

The man’s city of residence and age weren’t immediately available.

CORRECTION: Pumpkin Weigh-Off is October 8 - Saturday

Giant pumpkins lined up for weighing

Central Market Shoreline’s 14th Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off is set for 9am to 1pm on Saturday, October 8. (not Oct 10 as previously reported)

Pumpkin growers from all around the Pacific NW and Canada gather at Central Market in Shoreline to show off their pumpkins ranging anywhere from 500 to more than 1,000 pounds. They will be competing in the parking lot for bragging rights and a $2,000 check. This will be an exciting day of prizes for many of the contestants and a carving demonstration from a local Master Carver.

During the weigh-off, family and friends can partake in the Market’s Pumpkin Bratwurst Barbecue and caramel apples.

The pumpkins are carefully weighed using a net system, a forklift, and are gently placed on a giant scale provided by the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers organization.

The record for this event was set in 2013 with a pumpkin that weighed 1,666 pounds. Last year’s winner broke 1,500 pounds. Who knows what giant will take the field this year.

Pumpkins are entered through the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers organization.

Central Market Shoreline, open 7am-11pm, is at 15505 Westminster Way N, Shoreline 98133 (206-363-9226).

Updated 9-19-2016 - sorry, no hayrides this year.

Artist Reception at The Gallery at Town Center Thursday

The Gallery at Town Center invites you to stop by on Thursday, September 15 from 5pm-7pm for an Artist Reception. See a new exhibition of work by artists Angie Ketelhut and Jennie de Mello e Souza, enjoy refreshments and the company of other art lovers, and buy work by great local artists during this fun event.

The Gallery at Town Center is a program of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council and is located inside the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level. 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

About the artists:

Philip McCrain has spent a good deal of his life enjoying the outdoors. A native of the Northwest, he has spent much of his life exploring the mountains, lakes, streams and beaches of the area. He brings his years of experience in technology to his photography, along with a passion to share the beauty and wonder of birds—the world’s flying jewels.

McCrain approaches his work as a naturalist, artist, and technician. Knowing the habitats and habits of the birds is the essential to capturing their personality and essence. This means as much scouting as shooting. Finding locations with access to the birds with minimal disturbance is as much a part of the process as capturing and printing the image.

Phil’s work has been shown in galleries around the state and has won awards in local shows. He has participated in juried art festivals throughout the Northwest and has pieces hanging in homes across the country and on six continents. He currently lives in the Seattle area with his wife, and creative partner, Jody.

Niikuni Kyoko specializes in creations using Japanese Washi Paper. Each image starts with a pencil line drawing and then she uses traditional Japanese paper techniques to craft an image which looks and feels like a painting. Her inspiration comes from nature and wildlife, and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Chigiri-e is the name of the torn-paper technique Niikuni uses, where sheets of traditional rice paper are teased apart and the delicate fibers are glued down, one by one, with careful brush strokes. The final result is a complexity of color and depth that is breathtaking. She never grows tired of working with the Chrigiri-e method because she never knows exactly how the paper will respond to her manipulations.

Niikuni wants to share with others her love of nature and the beauty of Washi paper.

LFP Water District hydrogeological overview and water quality of aquifer

LFP Water District in blue
Map courtesy LFP Water District

Lake Forest Park Water District provides drinking water to about 2700 residents in the City of Lake Forest Park.

As part of the District's ongoing source water protection, a Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas (CARA) Report has been completed and is available here: Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas Report Available

The CARA delineation is in both King and Snohomish Counties, encompasses Cities of Brier and Lake Forest Park and provides a hydrogeological overview that can be used to provide additional protection of the District's exceptional water quality.

Associated Earth Sciences Inc. was commissioned to produce a report that characterizes the LFPWD source aquifer, inventories existing and potential sources of contamination, analyzes susceptibility , provides additional mapping and GIS data, designates areas of potential contamination.

The report was done in collaboration with North Seattle College (NSC) geology students in a soil analysis project to study superficial geology.

The findings of AESI were presented in a public meeting on August 22 at the Brier city hall.

As per WA DOH, "The Growth Management Act requires protection of public groundwater drinking supplies so that tragic events and their associated costs can be prevented and groundwater availability is not compromised. The prevention of groundwater contamination is far less expensive than cleanup or treatment."

The CARA study was made possible through a grant from WA Department of Health, office of Safe Drinking Water/Source Water Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Lake Forest Park Water District serves water to 897 connections within the City of Lake Forest Park with pure, unchlorinated well water from 8 artesian wells and 5 deep wells from the McKinnon Creek and Horizon View wellfields.
