Centennial rededication of the Battle of Seattle commemorative plaque

Lady Stirling Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution invites the public to attend a Centennial Rededication of the 1856 Battle of Seattle commemorative plaque, on October 15, 2016, at City Hall Park, 450 3rd Avenue, Seattle 98119, from 10:30am – 12:00pm.

As one of the Lady Stirling Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter's historic preservation goals, and in recognition of the 100-year anniversary of the original dedication by our earlier Chapter Daughters, the Lady Stirling Chapter arranged for the restoration of the stone monument and two brass plaques on the monument commemorating the Battle of Seattle.

Lady Stirling Daughters placed the original plaques and stone monument in 1916. The two plaques recognize the Battle of Seattle and the U.S.S. Maine; the stone is engraved with the DAR motto “Patriotism, Reverence, Remembrance.”

A brief ceremony to rededicate the restored monument and plaques will take place in City Hall Park, Seattle on October 15, 2016 at 10:30am at the monument site, which marks the location of the Battle.

In recognition of the impact of the Battle on the various indigenous Tribes in the Territory, speakers will also include a representative from the local Duwamish Nation.

Brief Overview of The Battle of Seattle:

The battle took place on January 26, 1856 between Native Americans, angered by the encroachment of settlers on native lands, and the settlers. The battle was a significant milestone for the young City of Seattle because, had the settlers not prevailed, it is widely believed that this territory would have suffered extensive massacres of the settlers with an uncertain outcome for the city. The timely arrival of the Navy’s sloop, Decatur, was a deciding force in winning the battle. Because the battle lasted only one day, there were few casualties on either side.

Nearby Parking to City Hall Park:
Parking Lots: 498 Terrace St, Seattle 98104 or  515 2nd Ave, Seattle 98104
Garages: Frye: 117 3rd Ave S, Seattle 98104 or Butler: 114 James St, Seattle 98104

The Shorewood Experience - Shorewood PTSA sets up fund to help all kids participate in school community

New Shorewood High School PTSA fund will help all kids participate in school activities.

What is the Shorewood Experience? Being part of the school, having the opportunity to be involved and participate in your own community. Some examples include sports, cheer, flags, band and drama...

but it’s more than that … it’s getting to go to sporting events, dances, Senior Spree, Prom and so much more.

It is estimated to cost as much as $250 a year to participate in the community at Shorewood and that number at least doubles in Senior year.

Did you know…
  • 28% of students at Shorewood are on Free and Reduced Lunch?
  • 356 students identify as Homeless in the Shoreline School District? One of the highest percentages in King County.

What can you do to help?
Take a moment and consider a donation to the Shorewood PTSA’s Shorewood Experience fund. Your dollars will contribute to our Invest Ed funding that provides this assistance to the students who need it most.

Why Help?
Studies show that students that have stress at home regarding financial issues around covering just the basic needs, food and shelter, are more likely to drop out of high school in favor of the short-term “fix” of a minimum wage job.

A student that can be supported and engaged in their community are less likely to do this because they are more optimistic by the support provided in their community.

Students that are able to graduate high school have better outcomes for the long term and this is better for society as a whole.

Goal for 2016-17 School Year: $5,000. Donate using the Pay Pal link on the PTSA website

Kenmore mural dedicated

The mural is a series of panels
that stretch 180 feet along the building

Photos by Jerry Pickard

At 180 feet, the newly dedicated Kenmore mural is the largest in King county and possibly in Washington state. It covers the entire west-facing exterior wall of the St. Vincent de Paul building at 7304 Bothell Way in Kenmore.

The "living history" mural was created by artists A. Gaul Culley and Staci Adman to celebrate the lives and experiences of the builders and stewards of Kenmore.

The ribbon cutting and dedication were held on Monday, September 5 at the Kenmore Community Club. The artists shared some of the cultural stories that inspired the images that make up the mural.

This mural is a significant contribution to Kenmore's 20 year vision of a 'community that: is inclusive and family friendly, with a small town feeling that fosters a sense of belonging and pride and supports local arts, culture and history.'

The scenes show places, activities, and businesses (past and present) which are part of the fabric of life in Kenmore.
