Shoreline Historical Museum Trillium Awards for Historic Buildings - deadline coming up

Friday, August 19, 2016

Richmond Masonic Hall
The Shoreline Historical Museum’s 11th annual Trillium Heritage Awards nominations are open until September 30, 2016.

The purpose of the awards is to raise awareness of the community’s past and recognize outstanding examples of historic architecture, as well as encourage excellence in maintenance and perpetuation of historic buildings.

These awards are presented by the Shoreline Historical Museum to property owners in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and North Seattle. Each of these areas will receive one award for the home or structure that has been well-maintained and is best preserved in its original style of construction. The building must have been built before December 31, 1940.

Anyone may nominate a building for this award by completing the nomination form and submitting it to the Museum. The form is available online or directly from the Museum at 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline. Each nomination requires the signature of the owner of the property. The award does not affect property taxation or any other legal status.

In the past, awards have been made to a great variety of buildings, including a log cabin, a mansion, and a historic clubhouse. The awards are presented at the Annual Meeting of the Museum, in November.

Property owners are always thrilled to receive this recognition because maintaining the original style of a historic structure usually requires a lot of effort and extra expense. The presence of this built heritage in our community is a significant component of our interesting and diverse environment!

Planning Commission will continue deliberations on 145th on Monday

The Planning Commission held a public hearing in the 145th Street Station Subarea Plan Package and Station Areas Development Regulations on Thursday, August 18 as part of their regular meeting. (see previous article)

The Commission took public comments as part of the hearing, from people who were present and from people who sent in written comments.

They began deliberations on the plan but did not finish that evening. Their deliberations have been continued to Monday, August 22 at 7:00pm in the Shoreline Council Chamber.
They will not be accepting any more written or oral public comments.

Some Ridgecrest residents are objecting. One of Ridgecrest's biggest events, the annual Ice Cream Social, was held the same evening. The Social routinely attracts over 3,000 residents.

Residents feel that in light of this, the City should have continued the public comment to give Ridgecrest residents - who are a large portion of the Subarea - the chance to comment in person.

Ridgecrest resident Janet Way is circulating a petition to ask the City to extend the public comment time.

The City stated that residents who attended the Social had the opportunity to comment in writing to the Planning Commission.

At this point, anyone wishing to comment on the 145th Street Station Subarea Plan Package and Station Areas Development Regulations may direct their comments to the City Council.

The next opportunity to make an oral comment before City Council will be at their next regularly scheduled meeting on September 12. Those wishing to make written comments may do so by emailing council@shorelinewa.gov or writing to Shoreline City Council, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Planning Commission meetings are recorded and can be viewed online.

Here's why the power went out

One wire down

As of 9pm Friday, power had yet to be restored for 424 customers in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park - down from 623 15 minutes before.

According to Seattle City Light, "An insulator on a transmission line broke. When it did, the line dropped onto distribution lines below. The energy surge popped breakers, fuses and switches."

Reader John Boril sent in a report about the cause of today's power outage.

It appears to have started in power lines at the corner of NE 180th and 8th Ave NE.

John says, "The first picture shows what appears to be the problem. You can see that all of the insulators on these poles have wires attached, except for one of them on the pole on the right. If you look down from that insulator, it appears that the wire which had been attached to it is now lying on the wires below, which probably caused a short when it fell onto them.

The downed line started a fire

"Witnesses at the scene told me that sparked a fire on the lawn of the house on the southeast corner of NE 180th and 8th NE."

Shoreline Fire responded, put out the fire, and blocked the road.

Did your lights flicker?

Power outage map 3:30pm

Did your lights flicker? Mine did.

As I have come to understand, that was because many of my neighbors just lost their power.

Most of the North City business district is out - hopefully running on emergency generators. Over 100 customers around the Ballinger - Lake Forest Park boundary on both sides of Ballinger Way.

Another 100 plus east of the freeway between 180th and 185th. The biggest group between 15th and Perkins north of 185th. There's a small group by Horizon View and a couple of singles south of 175th.

I suspect that not all areas have reported in.

Seattle City has not listed a cause. The only area which has a projected restoration time is North City - 10pm.

Will update as information comes in.

Stay cool, everyone.

WeatherWatcher: Excessive Heat Warning, Red Flag Warning

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued several hazardous weather alerts that span over the next couple of days. Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are actually at the northern end of this nasty heat wave, so we may not be quite as hot as Seattle proper and south. These warnings are for King County which includes Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from Thursday August 18, 2:00pm until Saturday August 20, 9:00pm. Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 90's for a high temperature, peaking in the 4:30pm - 6:00pm time range. For Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, expect tomorrows high temperature in the 5:00pm range to reach around 92-94°F. Saturday is likely to see about 93-95°F at about the same time. The tricky part is low temperatures will not get much cooler than around 65°F overnight Thursday-Friday and again Friday-Saturday.

Red Flag Warning is in effect until Saturday August 20, 11:59pm. The warning is due to a combination of low relative humidity, and breezy conditions. The Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring and can contribute to active fire behavior. Typically this condition is what causes small fires to blow up out of control, particularly brush fires and forest fires in the area.

Here's the current to date high and low temperature graph for August so far compared to average:

Our heat wave will end on Sunday with cooler temperatures and marine air returning. Sunny skies to continue through early next week with high temperatures back down to the low 80's.

North City Jazz Walk is a jazz festival and a street party

Smiling faces, good food, take the baby
and sit wherever you like

By Diane Hettrick

The North City Jazz Festival Tuesday night was both a jazz festival and a street party.

If you bought a bracelet, you could go into a venue, sit down, and listen to a set before moving on to the next venue.

But if you had children or just felt like staying outside in the warm evening air, it was also a terrific street party.

Leena's remodel is complete and the restaurant is open.
But this night, they were on the street handing out ice cream cones.

When it first opened, not a lot of people were on the street. This was a boon for people who don't like to stand in line. As the evening went on, more and more people came. There were long lines for venues and food, but somehow that was part of the fun. The atmosphere was happy and people were friendly.

With most of the North City business district on 15th NE closed from NE 175th to NE 180th, the whole street became a pedestrian mall. Several of the businesses moved to the street with food and free samples.

What is it about little boys and fire trucks?

There was a fire truck, bicycle police, the emergency communications van, and a food truck. Rotary had an outside beer garden, carefully fenced off to keep it age appropriate.

The outside venues had chairs

Notice of meeting: Lake Forest Park Water District

Notice of meeting Monday, August 22, 2016 at 6pm, Brier City Hall, 2901 228th St SW, Brier 98036.

Designation of Drinking Water Recharge Area (CARA)

Lake Forest Park Water District (LFPWD), a Special Purpose District, provides untreated drinking water to about 3000 residents within the City of Lake Forest Park. The source of our unique water is from an aquifer located under the Cities of Brier and Lake Forest Park.

LFPWD is presenting a hydrogeology study by Associated Earth Science Incorporation that delineates and defines a Critical Aquifer Recharge Area (CARA) in both King and Snohomish Counties.

Human activities within the recharge area have the potential to negatively affect drinking water quality and quantity.

Attend the meeting and become informed regarding:

  • What is an aquifer and how above ground activities have the potential to contaminate or deplete a drinking water source?
  • What is a recharge area and how does it impact drinking water quality and quantity?
  • What areas are most at risk from contamination events?
  • What can I do to provide good stewardship of a legacy drinking water source?
  • Who do I contact if there is a spill in the aquifer recharge zone?
  • How do cities and counties protect public groundwater drinking supplies?
  • What should first responders know about CARA areas?

Prevention of groundwater contamination is far less expensive than cleanup or treatment. We need your help to monitor inappropriate activities and quickly address a potential contamination event.

Excessive Heat Warning - and how to beat the heat

Northwest summers can be fantastic, but when is hot too hot?

The National Weather Service is on the job to tell us, and what they are saying should get your attention now.

They have issued an Excessive Heat Warning for many areas in our region, including King County.

This statement lets us know that very hot weather that can affect our health is expected starting Thursday afternoon through Saturday night.

So what do you with this information? Good question!

Protect yourself
On very hot days in King County, many more people are hospitalized for serious health problems. And we also know that extreme heat in our region is associated with increased deaths.

Key tips for staying cool:
  • Drink water and other fluids frequently; also eat foods with plenty of water in them.
  • Play in fountains and stay in the shade.
  • Find a place with air conditioning, like libraries, movie theaters, or shopping centers.
Protect others
Some people are at greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, including:
  • Older adults
  • People with health conditions (like heart disease)
  • People who work outside
  • Children
Check on family members and neighbors to make sure they’re able to stay cool. Keep children out of the direct sun. Take breaks from working outside. And never leave babies, children or pets in a parked car.

Stay informed
Summer is the time of year for extreme heat events that can affect our health. Keep track of severe weather on the local National Weather Service website or watch the news for warnings as the temperature warms up.

Additional tips

  • Visit Public Health’s Beat the Heat website for more tips on staying cool in the heat. (Information available in Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese)
  • Protect pets! Call 9-1-1 or 206-296-PETS (7387) if you see a pet in a hot car, or an animal that lacks access to fresh water and shade. (See Hot Dogs Are Not Cool poster.)
  • Additional resources from King County Office of Emergency Management

LFP vehicle prowls

Random vehicle prowls are not uncommon in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, but a small area of Lake Forest Park had six in one night in a small geographic area.

Most, if not all, of the vehicles were unlocked.

Police say to lock your cars and remove any valuables.

These thieves were simply trying door handles, passing locked cars and taking what they could from the unlocked ones.

If you have any information about these particular thefts, which took place Tuesday night / Wednesday morning, contact Lake Forest Park Police, 206-364-8216.

If you see someone prowling cars, call 911.

How can I help you? Workshop for those on the front lines

NUHSA (North Urban Human Services Alliance) presents "How Can I Help You?" - a FREE Skills and Resources Training for People on the Front Lines

We all want to be helpful, but when we don't have the skills or resources, being asked to help by someone in immediate need can be daunting.

This FREE training will start with a discussion led by speakers from Congregations for the Homeless about how to feel safe, remain calm, be present, set boundaries, and work to determine a person's need when approached.

A panel discussion will follow, with speakers from Hopelink, Center for Human Services, and the Crisis Clinic, to discuss local resources and open up the conversation to questions from the audience.

Attendees will leave with a new sense of knowledge and empowerment to make a difference in our community.

Monday, September 19, 4:30 to 6:30 pm, Northshore Fire Department, 7220 NE 181st St, Kenmore 98028.

This workshop is for anyone who wants / needs to know how to assist those facing hunger, homelessness, and more, and/or whose job puts them on the front lines.

What do we mean by "people on the front lines"? Anyone whose job or life puts them in a position where they may be approached by people in need, but who may not have the resources, skills, information or training to handle the situation with confidence.

This might be someone working at a deli counter, who is asked for food. A church secretary, who is approached by a family needing shelter. Or even someone working at a human services organization, who is an expert on his or her own agency, but who could use more information on what others in the region have to offer.

City Light to upgrade electrical cable in Lake Forest Park

Starting in early September 2016, Seattle City Light will be upgrading the aging electrical cable in parts of Lake Forest Park to help improve the electrical reliability in the area.

City Light’s contractor, Novinium, will test and where possible, inject underground cables with silicone to fill cracks in the cable insulation to prevent outages. If cables are not suited for injection, they will be replaced at a later time.

Affected customers have also been notified.

The contractor, Novinium will be working for a total of 13 days in the month of September. Daily work hours are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening and weekend work is not planned.

One maintenance outage is anticipated for this work. All affected customers will be notified on the Thursday before the following week’s outage. The outage date and time will be specified on the notification.

The entire project is expected to last one month.

Traffic and parking impacts are expected in the immediate area during work hours. Flaggers will be used where needed on residential streets. Crews will be careful to try and maintain access to driveways.

For more information, customers can contact John Likes, Electrical Service Representative at (206) 615-0608 or john.likes@seattle.gov.

County Council celebrates Liberation Day of Korea

“Moon Duk-ho, Consul General for the Republic of Korea, (Holding recognition) is joined by King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, members of the County Council and representatives of the Korean Community throughout King County after the Council recognized August 15th as Liberation Day of Korea.”

The Metropolitan King County Council, joined by Moon Duk-ho, Consul General for the Republic of Korea, today recognized August 15th as Liberation Day of Korea, celebrating the end of the Japanese occupation of the country with the surrender of Japan in World War II.

“We celebrate this freedom from oppression -- Korean independence and the immense value of the relationship between the Republic of Korea and King County,” said Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, the sponsor of the recognition.
“The legacy of the Korean soldiers and people as well as our Korean war veterans has fostered a special relationship between our countries that continues to unite us.”

In recognizing the end of the occupation of the Korean Peninsula, Liberation Day of Korea also celebrates the establishment of the first Republic of Korea in 1948.

There are over 135,000 residents of Korean descent living in Washington, and King County has multiple economic and cultural ties with Korea.
