Shoreline Little League plays hard

Text and photos by Geoff Vlcek

On Saturday the Shoreline Little League Junior level baseball team played down in Vancouver, Washington, against Redmond. The boys played hard but the errors early in the game really were too tough for them to overcome.

Late in the game the game they made a comeback which allowed SLL to get the score closer but Redmond held off SLL’s surge to take the game by a score of 14-7 in 7 innings.

Entering the losers' bracket with some fire under their feet to get back into their winning ways, their next game was on Sunday against District 5. On Saturday, District 5 lost to West Valley by a score of 23-1, according to the Washington Little League website.

Shoreline started this game with a bang, scoring 14 runs in the first 2 innings. District 5 was a really young team with little experience, but they put 100% into the game, even down 21-0 going into the top of the 5th and final inning.

Shoreline allowed a run in that inning and came out on top by a score of 21-1. Normally the game would have gone a full 7 innings, but there is a mercy rule that goes into effect when a team is up by at least 10 runs after 5 innings of play are completed.

Then on Tuesday the boys faced Redmond again in a rematch after they were beaten by 7 runs on Saturday by the same team. This time Shoreline showed true dominance by ending the game in the 6th innings with a walk-off scoring run for a 15-5 win. This was a huge win since they lost their first game and you are eliminated when you lose 2 games.

Thursday Shoreline plays Steel Lake/ Kent from District 10 at 6pm on the same field, Glenwood, in Vancouver, Washington. Steel Lake/ Kent lost their first game of the tournament 6-4 but has since won 3 straight, including a win Wednesday of 15-5 over North Kitsap from District 2.

Shoreline has to win Thursday, win Friday and then win two games on Saturday to win the State Championship, but from what I have seen from this team so far, I have no doubt they can pull it off.

Proposal to make Puget Sound a no-discharge zone for vessel sewage

The Department of Ecology, with support from other state agencies, has formally requested that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protect Puget Sound by making it a no-discharge zone for vessel sewage.

The move would prohibit commercial and recreational vessels from releasing sewage into Puget Sound.

The Sound’s shellfish beds, swimming beaches and protected areas are especially vulnerable to vessel sewage. The sewage discharged contains relatively high concentrations of bacteria and viruses that can remain active even several miles or hours after entering the water.

“Washington has made a tremendous investment in the protection and restoration of Puget Sound,” said Ecology Director Maia Bellon, the agency that is leading the request. “This designation is an important piece of our strategy, and is a necessary step forward for one of our state’s most prized ecological treasures.”

The no-discharge zone would be the first in Washington and the Northwest. The EPA has established more than 90 such zones in 26 states.

The no-discharge zone designation is a near-term action on the Puget Sound Action Agenda.

“This designation is an important tool in recovering Puget Sound,” said Sheida Sahandy, executive director of the Puget Sound Partnership. “It supports one of the region’s key strategic initiatives – restoring and re-opening shellfish beds. It also helps achieve both environmental and economic recovery outcomes.”

The Partnership is the state agency leading the region’s collective effort to restore and protect Puget Sound. It coordinates the Action Agenda, a regional recovery plan, by working with hundreds of partners – governments, tribes, scientists, businesses, nonprofits and others.

If approved by EPA, Ecology and other agencies would begin implementing the zone’s no-discharge requirement with education and technical assistance. These efforts would be augmented, as needed, by law enforcement in response to violations.

Shoreline Little League Baseball Juniors win District 8 Championship

Photos and text by Geoff Vlcek

On Saturday, July 9th, the Shoreline Little League Juniors level baseball team won the District 8 championship game in dramatic fashion against the NE/RUG team.

Shoreline led for most of the game until the top of the 7th inning where NE/RUG took a 7-6 lead. The SLL boys rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game back up at 7-7.

Since their games normally end after 7 complete innings, unless the game is tied at that point, they went into an 8th inning where Shoreline held NE-RUG to zero runs.

Then in the bottom of the 8th inning Shoreline’s Alex Krasnoselsky came up to bat with a runner in scoring position and hit a walk-off single to win the District 8 Championship for Shoreline Little League.

The team now moves on to the State Tournament in Vancouver, Washington.

Congrats to the players, coaches and parents.

Shoreline issues Final EIS for 145th Street Station Subarea

The City of Shoreline has issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the 145th Street Station Subarea Planned Action and it is now available for public review. No action will be taken before July 25, 2016.

The City looked at four zoning alternatives for the subarea around the future 145th Street Sound Transit station and analyzed potential impacts.

The Subarea Plan will guide the long term redevelopment of this area with goals and policies to promote higher density mixed-use and residential development, employment, neighborhood-serving businesses, multi-modal transportation options, parks, public services, and utility infrastructure.

The FEIS includes a summary of impacts and mitigation measures to accommodate anticipated levels of growth over the next 20-years and for build-out of the potential zoning alternatives studied.

Copies of the FEIS and Appendices can be downloaded from the project website

Copies of the Final EIS are also available for public review at the City Planning department and the Shoreline Library or for purchase on compact disc.

Artist Reception at The Gallery at Town Center

The Gallery at Town Center invites you to stop by on Thursday, July 21 from 5pm-7pm for an Artist Reception. See a new exhibition of work by artists Angie Ketelhut and Jennie de Mello e Souza, enjoy refreshments and the company of other art lovers, and buy work by great local artists during this fun event.

The Gallery at Town Center is a program of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council and is located inside the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level. 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155.

About the artists:

Angie Ketelhut grew up in the Midwest USA and received a BFA in Illustration from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Her expressive painting style and use of vibrant colors captures and honors the furry friends who bring so much joy and happiness to our lives. Ketelhut has sold her work internationally and offers custom portraiture through her website. She now resides just outside of Seattle with her husband, son, and Boston Terrier.

Jennie de Mello e Souza’s background is in scientific illustration and art history. A few years ago, she decided to venture in a different direction, moving away from the realistic, and precise rules scientific illustration and beginning to explore her limits of abstraction.

This was a challenge after years of painting so precisely. To be able to improvise, to evoke a feeling, and to instill sentiment into a painting instead of scientific inquiry and exactitude was like free-falling and flying at the same time.

Her paintings are layers of colors, and paint is allowed to bloom and run. Sometimes a painting happens almost subconsciously, and colors seem to paint themselves. Other times, the layers build up and seem to speak through each other, making a whole that is intricate and interdependent. de Mello e Souza hopes it helps her viewers feel some emotion; entirely personal, precious, and beautiful. de Mello e Souza lives and works in Edmonds.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations.

Thursday Roundtable: The Customized Cover Letter

This Thursday (7/21): The Customized Cover Letter

I’ve seen plenty of letters that seem like they were lifted right off the Internet and don’t address very well the requirements to whatever job position the candidate is applying. Responding to an ad? Before whisking off our resume and letter, we need to make sure we’ve studied the ad to determine how our qualifications match the employer's requirements. Armed with this information, you can craft a cover letter that positions you as the ideal candidate.

There’s a great method afloat and I’ll show you what it’s about!

We’ll go through a near perfect example of a customized cover letter and discover what those who are selected for interviews are doing, what they aren’t, and why.

Bring your letter on a thumb drive, or email it to me, and we’ll project a few and go through them.

WSP: First official Pokémon Go collision reported

A 28-year-old driver was cited for causing a collision in Fall City because he admitted to being distracted by the Pokémon Go App.

This is the first distracted driving collision reported to the Washington State Patrol (WSP) since the mobile app launched earlier this month.

On Monday July 18, 2015, a driver of a Honda heading eastbound on State Route 202 near 332nd Street in Fall City was traveling the posted speed limit when he collided into the rear of a newer Chevy sedan. The female driver of the Chevy had stopped in the roadway and was attempting to make a left turn when her car was hit. Neither the female driver nor her young son suffered any injuries.

Both cars were towed from the scene.

The driver of the Honda admitted to being distracted by focusing on his Pokémon Go App.

The WSP urges gamers to consider safety over their high score. Below are safety tips to consider before attempting to become a Pokémon master:
  • Do not trespass! Please don’t be poking out of bushes at WSP facilities or anyone else’s private property…especially at night as it will most likely trigger security or cause police to respond.
  • Please don’t catch and drive, it’s more dangerous than texting while driving.
  • If you’re on your way to a PokéStop, know your surroundings and pay attention to where you're going and who's around you.

Coming up soon: 4-Corners BrewFest

4-Corners BrewFest, Saturday, Aug 13,
3:00pm - 7:00pm, Innis Arden Clubhouse,
1430 NW 188th St, Seattle, WA 98177

2016 will mark the 6th year of the 4-Corners BrewFest. We have grown (but just enough), and have become the beer-lovers' event of the summer.

Haven't been yet?? Where have you been?

A BrewFest ticket is not just your opportunity to experience new beers or to revel in your favorites.

Your ticket includes 10 5-oz tastes of whatever strikes your fancy, enough food to qualify as dinner, live music, and the chance to rub elbows with Shoreline's finest residents. Your ticket also benefits a charity; this year's cause is homelessness, and Hopelink is our charity of choice. Proceeds from the 2016 BrewFest will be split between the 4 participating neighborhoods and Hopelink.

So... what do you bring?
  • Your ID. Yep, EVERYONE gets carded, even if you have grey hair and are married to our mom.
  • Your wallet. Just kidding, you can leave that at home (except for that ID). The ticket is all-inclusive, so you won't need a fat wallet.
  • Your friends. Your neighbors. Your out-of-town guests. Your favorite beer-lover.
What do you leave at home?
  • Your wallet (see above). You cannot purchase extra tastes (an insurance thing), so cash will just take up room in your pocket.
  • Your kids. This is a 21+ event, so even babes-in-arms cannot attend. Even if they love good craft brews.
  • Your dogs. It gets pretty crowded out there, and often a little hot too, so please leave the happy pups at home.
  • Your favorite stein. Yeah, we have tasting glasses. You won't get served in a 60-oz mug.
  • Sound good? Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door. We offer a limited number of designated driver tickets online, and tickets are on sale both online and at Beach House Greetings.
Want to volunteer? Many hands make light work! Click this link to see our Sign Up on SignUp.com: Find the BrewFest page here, and check back often as our list of brewers grows!

We hope to see you on Saturday, August 13!!

The white patrol car was parked when the distracted driver
slammed into the back

Photos and text from Washington State Patrol

Last year, at least 33 Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicles were hit by distracted drivers while troopers were either at construction zones, or conducting traffic stops, or clearing a collision. Already by June 6 of 2016, 11 WSP vehicles were struck while troopers were stopped on the side of the road, with emergency lights activated. The numbers are on the rise. In 2014, 25 drivers ran into patrol vehicles.

It happened to King County District 2 Trooper Mallory Reynolds. Last December, Trooper Reynolds had her emergency lights activated while stopped on the right shoulder of I-5 south near the West Seattle Bridge. She was completing the impound of an abandoned car when a distracted driver rammed into her patrol vehicle with her still inside. “It caused a big jolt. The sudden impact caught me by surprise,” said Trooper Reynolds.

“It is not worth it to drive distracted when the risks jeopardize everyone’s safety,” says Trooper Reynolds.

The for-hire car driver was also traveling south I-5 in the right lane when he entered the shoulder and collided with the Trooper's patrol vehicle.

The distracted driver was traveling at least 30 mph on impact and if he was going any faster Trooper Reynolds says, “He most likely would have struck the tow truck driver who was hooking up the impounded car.”

The force of the impact injured Trooper Reynold’s back and caused the patrol vehicle to be in the shop and off the road for two full months.

Patrolling the roadways of King County, Trooper Reynolds has seen plenty of distracted drivers, "Talking on their phones, texting, taking pictures or entering coordinates into their GPS units, all of these activities take driver’s attention away from the roadways.”

Studies show that driving is a complicated task that requires the driver’s full attention.

Drivers need to pay particular attention to the road while in work zone. Since the summer construction season is in full swing, many drivers across Washington State are traveling through WSDOT work zones on a daily basis.

“Drivers can do their part too by slowing down and staying focused on the road at all times for the safety of our workers and for themselves and their fellow travelers,” said Justin Fujioka of WSDOT.

Many work zones change the way a highway looks, feels and drives. Following posted speed limits and paying attention to the changes ahead will help keep both drivers and the work crews safe.

Washington State Patrol Troopers will be out patrolling to ensure drivers are following the traffic laws.

Metro is now looking at a range of options to improve management of parking at our lots and garages, and we want your input.

Take this 10-minute online survey to tell us what you think, or contact us  206-263-9768.
