Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Sgt. Wing Woo
Shoreline Police
Friends of Shoreline Police Sgt. Wing Woo posted this update on his condition as he recovers from a traumatic surfing accident while on a Hawaiian vacation with his family. (See previous story)

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support for Sgt. Woo and his family. He has made some positive progress this week and we wanted to share! He underwent surgery a few days ago to relieve pressure on his spine. We are hopeful this will aid in his full and complete recovery.
In addition, he is able to be off the ventilator for several hours at a time. He is awake and alert. As he continues to fight for a full recovery we are mindful that every small positive step is because of your prayers, support and his strength. Our heartfelt appreciation is beyond words.

Cards can be sent to

Everyone reads: Martin Marten - book discussion and presentation by author Monday

Shoreline and Richmond Beach have joined with Lake Forest Park READS again this year, marking the twelfth year of this community literary event.

In Martin Marten, Oregon teenager Dave and pine marten Martin experience ups and downs on the road to adulthood and learn that nature shapes us all. On Mount Hood, two young lives intertwine as they come of age.
Fourteen year old Dave lives in a cabin with his family, but separation from his life there approaches. Dave's story is braided with that of a young pine marten, also on the brink of adulthood and striking out on his own.
The interconnectedness of all life and the wonders of the natural world shine through this hopeful tale.

Third Place Books offers 20% off on this title through July 31.

On Monday, July 25 at 6:30pm the author, Brian Doyle will meet with readers to discuss Martin Marten before his LFP Reads presentation. Refreshments will be provided by the Honey Bear Bakery.

At 7:30pm Brian Doyle will be on the Third Place Commons Stage (upper level Town Center) for a presentation on his book for the annual Lake Forest Park Reads event.

Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park Town Center, intersection of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way, Lake Forest Park 98155.

Letter to the Editor: Concerns about Fred Meyer site

To the Editor:

As a 30 year resident and a person who cares deeply about the quality of life in Shoreline, I must express my concern over the increasing deteriorating conditions outside of the Fred Meyer Store.

A number of years ago a row of trees was planted along Linden Avenue on the west side of the property. Initially that strip of land was maintained and was an attractive addition. No longer is that the case. It is long overdue for upkeep.

Unfortunately, and not Fred Meyer's fault, vehicles seem to occasionally bump into the rock wall on the south of the building. Repairs are very slow to happen if they happen at all. That gives the building the appearance of neglect.

Most concerning of all is the increasing population of panhandlers at the south entrance to the store. I am aware and sympathetic to the issues of homelessness in our community. There is a definite lack of affordable housing. However, the entrance to a store's parking lot is not a place to set up a home. There are resources available but those resources are not to be found in the parking lot. Many of us, myself included, may be unknowingly contributing to this increasing problem by giving to these panhandlers. If it is profitable for them to be there, they will remain. Surely there must be creative solutions for the well being of all.

I am aware of customers who choose to no longer shop at Fred Meyer because of this issue. Older residents do not feel safe. Families with young children do not feel safe. People who choose to walk to shop, do not feel safe.

I do not know the answer to all of these concerns. I do know that Fred Meyer in the past has been a caring and responsible member of the Shoreline Community. I am asking that they once again value their property and the safety of their consumers. As members of this community, we would be glad to work with and support them in their efforts.

Candidates in 32nd District agree on need to support education, not on how

By Diane Hettrick

Legislative candidates in the 32nd District all agreed Tuesday that education is the legislature's priority, but they differed on how to provide the money.

Candidates for two positions in the District spoke at a candidate forum Tuesday at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church.

The event was sponsored by the church's Peace and Justice committee.

Many tied support for public education to questions about social issues such as mental health, homelessness, and inclusion / exclusion.

They were divided about how to fully fund education in the state, which has a shortfall of $3.5 billion.

Both 32nd District positions in the state House of Representatives are up for election this year.

In Position 1, incumbent Democratic State Rep. Cindy Ryu faces challengers Keith Smith, an Independent from Snohomish county, and Alvin Rutledge, a Republican from Edmonds.

In Position 2, incumbent State Rep. Ruth Kagi, a Democrat, faces Republican David Schirle, Bernie Sanders Democrat Wesley Irwin, and Libertarian Alex Hart.

Schirle had a previous engagement and sent a surrogate. Hart did not respond to requests to attend.

Position 1 candidates had a range of suggested funding solutions.

Independent Keith Smith sounded some familiar themes in education funding, talking about eliminating waste and inefficiencies and only spending on programs that work. Ryu responded that for all the six years she has been in the legislature they have been working on exactly this and there isn't much more to cut. She said the state needs to find new sources of revenue.

Acknowledging that voters are not supportive of a state income tax, she suggested a business income tax on earned income, and closing the loopholes that give large tax breaks to developers and major employers.

Smith suggested reforming the criminal justice system and not incarcerating so many people for minor offenses, with the savings being directed to education.

Republican Rutledge said that the answer is "No" to a state income tax and suggested that pension reform for state employees would be a large source of revenue for schools.

In the Position 2 race, Rep. Kagi said that our tax system is regressive and needs to be reformed, but we could start with a tax for the top 5 percent of wealthy individuals and corporations. The tax breaks for the corporations should be examined to see if they are benefiting the public and if they are not, they should be eliminated. She acknowledged that the public doesn't trust the legislature and talked about the need to help people understand the benefits of a graduated tax.

Democratic challenger Wesley Irwin took this a few steps further, saying that the state gives about 36 billion dollars in "corporate welfare," about four times what is needed to fully fund education, including reducing student college debt. Despite the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizen's United decision, corporations are not people, he said, and we need a progressive, peaceful revolution for real change.

Irwin took a couple of jabs at Rep. Kagi, saying that she voted for charter schools. She responded that she voted against charter schools, but the citizens voted them in. She chose to continue funding for an existing charter school, rather than close it down.

Republican David Schirle's surrogate, Janna Anderson, answered questions on his behalf. She said that there are so few wealthy people that "bleeding" them wouldn't bring in enough revenue to fund education, and asked why they should be penalized for what they earn. Schirle's position is to reduce the size of government because less government means less taxation and a freer life for citizens. She said that money is pouring into education and the schools are still declining. Money is not the issue and we should get the legislature out of education.

After the August 2 primary, the top two vote-getters in each position will go on to the November 8 general election, regardless of party.

The 32nd District includes the city of Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle, Woodway, south Edmonds and nearby unincorporated areas of Snohomish County, the city of Lynnwood and part of Mountlake Terrace.

Past vendors and crafts from Crafts Day at the LFP Farmers Market

This Sunday, July 17 marks the return of the annual Crafts Day at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market! Always a popular event, this year’s Crafts Day will feature 20+ artists and crafters from around the region.

Be sure to stop by the market to shop a gorgeous array of handmade jewelry, accessories, decorative arts, cards, journals, wearables, garden art, and more! Crafts Day only happens once a summer at the market, so it’s the perfect time to pick up unique and personal gifts and to treat yourself to something special, too.

Of course, every week the LFP Farmers Market focuses on great, healthy foods grown and produced across Washington State. Fresh produce, meats, fish, eggs, and cheese are always on offer, as well as other grocery goodies like fresh pastas, sauces, bread, honey, jams, coffees, teas, wines, and more.

While you’re there, pick up some lunch from one of the hot food vendors including Drummin’ Up Wontons, Patty Pan, or Vespucci Pizza. Satisfy your sweet tooth on the spot with a Whidbey Island Ice Cream bar or fun, fancy popsicles from Seattle Pops. Or pick-up something delicious for both now and later like Classic Kettle Corn, Jon Boy Caramels, Luvacakes, Doll House Baked Goods, or Pete’s Perfect Toffee. (See the full vendors list here.)

You’ll also want to mark your calendar for other fun events coming up soon at the market including Family Day on July 31st and another Food Truck Extravaganza on August 28th. Watch for more details on these events as they draw closer!

The LFP Farmers Market is presented by Third Place Commons, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering real community in real space. The market is open from 10am to 3pm every Sunday through October 16th and takes place in the parking lot of LFP Town Center adjacent to City Hall at the intersection of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way.

Council seeks volunteers for voters’ pamphlet levy renewal pro and con committees

At its July 11 meeting, the Shoreline City Council indicated that they intend to move forward with placing renewal of Shoreline’s maintenance and operations levy lid lift to maintain basic public safety, parks and recreation, and community services on the November 8, 2016, general election ballot.

Accompanying the ballots will be the King County Voter’s Pamphlet. The pamphlet will include an explanatory statement from the City that states the effect of the levy lid lift renewal if approved. In response will be statements in support and opposition to the ballot measure. State law requires the City Council to appoint two committees to draft the pro and con statements. The committees can have no more than three members each; however, the committees may seek advice from any person or persons. The committees will also have an opportunity to write a rebuttal statement to the other side’s statement.

Individuals interested in applying for one of the committee positions should submit a community service application to the Shoreline City Clerk no later than July 22. Applications can be found at shorelinewa.gov or at the Clerk's desk in City Hall. The City Council will review the applications and appoint the committee members at its August 1 business meeting.

To learn more about the requirements for the voter’s pamphlet and the duties of the pro and con committees, review the 2016 Jurisdiction Manual at King County Elections.

WestSide Baby and Les Schwab urge Shoreline residents to donate to Seattle’s largest Diaper Drive for Babies in Need

Stuff the Bus with diapers

Staff from local nonprofit WestSide Baby will be dropping by the Shoreline Les Schwab store on Friday, July 15, with their specially decorated bus in order to thank staff and customers for their participation in the Stuff the Bus diaper drive.

Through July 2016, the Shoreline Les Schwab Tire Centers store is partnering with WestSide Baby to host Seattle’s largest diaper drive. Residents are urged to buy a pack of diapers and drop it off at the North City store at 17754 15th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155 to benefit local babies in need.

The 16th Annual Stuff the Bus Diaper Drive aims to gather more than 300,000 diapers. Members of the public can support the cause by donating packs of diapers as part of drives across the city.

WestSide Baby’s Executive Director Nancy Woodland said, “We are delighted that Les Schwab is once again lending its dollars and resources to help kids in our community. There are more than 10,000 children under the age of 3 living in poverty in King County.
"These children will need 22 million diapers every year. Unfortunately, many families are forced to choose between buying diapers and paying bills, as diapers are not covered by any government aid programs, including food stamps.”

“When our communities succeed, it’s good for all of us,” said Jerry, Manager, at Les Schwab.

“Thanks to our customers’ generosity and our partnership with WestSide Baby, we’re helping our youngest neighbors stay healthy and happy. Les Schwab is proud to support such a great cause that helps all children get off to a good start in life.”

WestSide Baby, in partnership with the community, provides essential items to local children in need by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing and equipment.

Les Schwab Tire Centers is one of the leading independent tire dealers in the United States, with more than 7,000 employees and more than 460 locations throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

On the Mayor's Mind: Serving and protecting our communities

Chris Roberts
Mayor of Shoreline
By Chris Roberts, Mayor of Shoreline

Last week my son told me that he wanted to be an animal doctor, a firefighter, or a police officer. I am proud that he wants to give back to his community.

I am able to say that serving and protecting our communities is noble and just.

I am able to direct him to my good friends who serve in police forces across the country, whose bravery and dedication to their communities are the model for all of us to follow.

I can show him the exemplary work of the police officers in Shoreline who care deeply about the safety and well-being of the people who live and work in our City.

I am unable to explain to him why there is so much hatred in the world. I am unable to explain why people kill each other, or why we it is often difficult find common ground and understanding in our communities.

Our hearts are broken this week due to senseless violence across the nation and across the world. Last month we took a moment of silence to pay our respects for the 49 people killed in Orlando.

Since then 1096 individuals have been killed by gun violence in our county, most visibly the tragic deaths of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, and the senseless deaths of five officers and the injuries to 11 others in Dallas this past week.

These incidences may have occurred thousands of miles away from Shoreline, but deeply affected our community as well. On Friday, City staff came to work and found that people wrote anti-police graffiti inside our parking lot.

That same day, Shoreline residents dropped off flowers and other gifts to our Police Department in an outpouring of support for all they do to protect our city and keep our kids safe.

At the same time, we have been asked what can we do? What can we do to develop and maintain a level of trust between the police and our community?

In many ways, Shoreline is taking proactive steps to increase trust and awareness within our communities. For the past couple of years, Shoreline has offered the Nurturing Trust program, connecting law enforcement and community members, offering programs in both English and Spanish.

The City recently hired a Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator to lead the City’s efforts to engage and include members of diverse cultures and ethnicities more actively in the life of the City.

We know that these conversations about how to keep our community safe will continue in the months and years to come. A good place to start is by hosting an event for your neighbors on August 2, National Night Out. I hope we use that time to develop relationships, build trust, and celebrate the richness of the diversity in our community.

Personal voter guides available online

By Evan Smith

Voters in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and around Washington state can read personal voters’ guides for the August 2 primary election online.

Voters can get the online voter guides now, rather than wait for the voters’ pamphlets to arrive late in the week. The King County elections office sends the pamphlets by bulk mail to all residential addresses a day before ballots go to registered voters by a faster form of mail Thursday, July 14.

While the mailed pamphlets contain information on every contest in dozens of ZIP codes, online guides are individualized for each voter. So instead of looking at information for several legislative districts and ballot measures from the city of Seattle, a voter in Shoreline would find material only about the 32nd Legislative District and other items on his or her ballot.

Voters can find this information by logging in here, and entering name and date of birth.

Next, the voter needs to click on “Voters’ Guide.”

Then, by clicking on “Federal Candidates,” the voter will find material about the U.S. Senate candidates and Congressional District candidates. By clicking on “Statewide Candidates,” the voter will find information about candidates for governor and eight other statewide offices, by clicking on “Legislative Candidates," the voter will find information on candidates for positions in the Legislative District and by clicking on “Judicial candidates,” the voter will find material on one contested State Supreme Court contest and one King County Superior Court election.

Evan Smith can be reached at schsmith@frontier.com.

Local author makes USA Today Best Seller list

Sunday, July 10, 2016

12 Contemporary Christian Romance authors named to USA Today Best Sellers List, including Lesley Ann McDaniel from Shoreline.

When twelve Christian Romance authors came together in February of 2016, they had a vision for what could be accomplished if they worked not as “indies” but as a team. On July 7, 2016, that vision became reality when WHISPERS OF LOVE, a compilation of 12 brand new contemporary Christian romance novels, crested the hill and broke onto the USA Today Best Sellers list at #79.

“Writing is an uphill climb most days,” said McDaniel, whose novel Oceans Apart was part of the set said. “The days when you get to stop and enjoy the view are few and far between, and I'm really happy to be enjoying this particular view with this amazing group of authors.”

The twelve newly-minted USAT best sellers and titles include:
  • Lesley Ann McDaniel Oceans Apart
  • Valerie Comer Secrets of Sunbeams
  • JoAnn Durgin Gentle Like The Rain
  • Kimberly Rae Jordan A Change of Heart
  • Jan Thompson Smile for Me
  • Marion Ueckermann The Other You
  • Autumn Macarthur Teapots & Tiaras
  • Leah Atwood Not This Time
  • Staci Stallings Flight 259
  • Sally Bradley Homestands
  • Carol Mancado The Lifeguard, the Abandoned Heiress, and Frozen Custard
  • Christina Coryell Overture and a Prince

Lesley Ann McDaniel
The idea behind the set, conceived and shepherded to completion by Jan Thompson, was to take twelve current Amazon bestselling authors, get each of them to contribute a brand-new, never-before-released novel, and then market the books as a unit rather than as individual books. However, while the destination was always in mind, just how to get there wasn’t always so clear.

“The cover was one of the hardest things about the set,” Staci Stallings said. “We knew it had to be perfect, and somehow it needed to perfectly convey all twelve stories and authors. That is a much bigger challenge than it might at first appear.”

With story settings ranging from the USA to Canada and South Africa to the Bahamas, not to mention such varied characters as an architect, a doctor, a principal, an artist, a lifeguard, an athlete, and a medical missionary, even finding common ground was no easy task.

After discussing and submitting many, many possibilities, Durgin finally dropped the right piece into the overwhelming puzzle. The picture featured on the front cover was from an actual wedding shoot, and perfect it turned out to be.

“I think it says Christian romance,” Stallings said. “Gentle, fun, quirky but really, really romantic just like the stories. It’s an absolutely perfect match for such a diverse collection.”

The stories contained in the WHISPERS OF LOVE collection range from one about a swim team to one that features a cantankerous goat. From tears to laughter, this collection has it all.

The USA Today Bestselling collection, WHISPERS OF LOVE, can be found at the following online bookstores: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and iBooks
