Volunteers wanted - strong backs, short hours, high job satisfaction

Long time market volunteers Emily, Janina and Drew

The Shoreline Farmers Market is thriving in its new location at Aurora Square. Use of the parking lot by Sears in the upper lot has allowed them to expand and offer more crafts, foods, and farmers.

The visibility and accessibility of the site attracts many more attendees, which in turn encourages more vendors to participate.

However, that means a lot more work to be done to set up and break down each Saturday, and help with activities. The Market relies on volunteers for these tasks, and the more the Market grows, the more volunteers are needed.

Available: 388 volunteer slots throughout the summer. The market is on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Prime times start at 3pm when the market breaks down, but you can sign up for any of the available spots, which includes greeters, assisting with kid activities, and ranges from an hour to all day.

Market Manager Teri Wheeler says that volunteers really like to sign up at the VolunteersSpot site.

"People like being able to choose the time and position they want and appreciate the auto email reminder a few days before their shift. I tell people that feel intimidated by technology that I am happy to help sign them up."

Contact Teri by email if you have questions or would like help signing up.

And there's a perq - volunteers will get a $5 Market Buck to spend at the Market - including one of those spiffy $5 Farmers Market t-shirts!

Sound Transit Board votes to send major light rail expansion plan to November ballot

Sound Transit Board meeting at Union Station Thursday

The Sound Transit Board capped 3-1/2 years of discussion and public input on Thursday by unanimously voting to send voters a final Sound Transit 3 ballot measure for consideration in November. The plan's proposals include completion of a regional light rail network as the area's population grows an estimated 800,000 by 2040.

The ST3 plan would build a total of 62 miles of light rail with stations serving 37 additional areas. Improvements introduced following public comment on a draft plan in April would speed up most of the extensions by two to five years.

Light rail to Everett via Paine Field would open five years earlier than the draft plan released by the Board in March. Extensions to downtown Redmond and Federal Way would be completed four years sooner, while the Ballard, West Seattle and Tacoma extensions would open three years sooner. The agency would work with partners to further improve timelines where feasible.

If approved by voters in November, ST3 would also build light rail between South Kirkland, Bellevue and Issaquah, while expediting the establishment of bus rapid transit service on I-405 from Lynnwood to Burien and on SR 522 (Bothell Way), with faster buses running every 10 minutes during peak commute hours.

The plan would expand the capacity of fast-growing Sounder commuter rail service linking Seattle, Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, Tacoma and Lakewood, with extension of the line to reach Joint Base Lewis-McChord and DuPont. The Tacoma Link light rail line would extend from Hilltop to Tacoma Community College.

Among a number of other projects in the plan, early investments would include speeding up existing bus routes by enabling them to run on the shoulders of freeways where possible. Details of the plan are available at soundtransit3.org, including an interactive map.

The ST3 Plan's $53.8 billion in investments would be funded through new voter-approved sales, MVET and property taxes, with estimated additional $200 annual or $17 monthly costs for a typical adult in the Sound Transit District.

Three local blood drives - Richmond Beach and Lake Forest Park

Like blood banks all over the United States, Bloodworks Northwest responded to the Orlando crisis by sharing their stock.

Although our local blood supply has been very tight in recent weeks, when the appeal for blood came from Orlando we responded immediately, sending more than 70 units of blood components.
That tragedy demonstrates to the community Bloodworks Northwest’s need for blood donors every day to maintain a strong blood supply to meet the needs of patients having surgery, organ transplants, receiving cancer treatment, or therapies for blood disorders and to be able to respond when a tragedy does occur.

ALL BLOOD TYPES ARE NEEDED
  • O- and B- still at EMERGENCY levels, less than a one day supply
  • O+ and A- at CRITICAL Levels, less than a two day supply
  • A+ and AB Plasma at ALERT Levels, less than a three day supply
We are asking donors to make an appointment to donate -- to help us rebuild our inventories, so we can always meet the needs of local patients. Will you please donate blood at one of these local events?

President Obama headed to the area Friday and Saturday

WSDOT says that you may want to factor in some extra travel time if you’ll be hitting the roads this weekend.

President Obama is scheduled to be in the Puget Sound area Friday afternoon, June 24, through Saturday, June 25.

As with all visits by heads of state, drivers can expect significant delays and closures on state highways and surrounding streets. The Secret Service doesn’t release information about travel plans much ahead of time so your best bet is to stay connected with local media and follow @wsdot_traffic on Twitter.

We’re limited in the amount of information we can put out but we’ll do the best we can to let drivers know what is closed and where to avoid.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: All Our Yesterdays

All Our Yesterdays
by Cristin Terrill

Em awakens (again) in a prison cell, and can't stop thinking about the tiny drain in the floor. She makes a tool from a stolen spoon, and pries up the drain cover ... and finds, hidden inside, a list of fourteen items. Thirteen have already been crossed off.

At the bottom, in her own handwriting, Em reads the final line: You have to kill him.

In another place, in another time, Marina is quietly in love with her next-door-neighbor, James. James is gorgeous, brilliant ... and about to make a discovery that will change everything.

And everything is just about to become much, much worse.

All the loops and potential paradoxes of time travel, plus suspenseful chasing around in the dark, romance, betrayal, torture, and a very thin hope for redemption. This fast-moving narrative kept me up way past my bedtime.

Recommended for ages 12 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

Letter to the Editor: Thanks to residents for support of Buddy Poppy drive

To the Editor

On behalf of Blackburn-Aurora VFW Post 3348, I would like to thank the residents of Shoreline for their generosity in our VFW Buddy Poppy drive over the Memorial Day weekend. Our Post, which is based in Shoreline, uses the donations collected to give to many veteran causes, including the Compass Center Veteran Housing in Shoreline, Fisher House at the VA Hospital, USO at Sea-Tac Airport, and the Washington Soldier's Home in Orting. Without Shoreline citizens' kindness and generosity, and the generosity of the stores involved, including Fred Meyer and Central Market, veterans would be negatively impacted more than they are. Thank you again.

See something? Say something

Lake Forest Park police are delighted about two recent incidents where citizens reported suspicious behavior which led to arrests - and prevention of crimes.

In the first incident on June 10, a very alert LFP Citizen observed suspicious behavior coming from a male subject who was walking around her neighbor’s house. She called 911. Within a couple of minutes, two LFP officers arrived and located him a short distance away just as another citizen was calling to report the same person. Ultimately the subject was arrested on outstanding warrants and taken away. Even though this bad guy didn’t break into a house, there is little doubt that was his plan. Kudos to the citizens for making quick 911 calls and "most assuredly thwarting a burglary or two."

On Tuesday, officers responded to the report of a man burglarizing their garage. "The astute citizen gave us a GREAT description of the bad guy and officers located him a short distance away and took him into custody."

If you see something - "say something" really works! Thanks for calling us, keep up the great work and we’ll keep giving burglars courtesy rides to jail.
See Something, Say Something really works.

Cascadia Rising drill: Did You Survive the 9.5 Earthquake?

Field Day 2015

Did You Survive the 9.5 Earthquake?

You and 8 million of your fellow northwesterners experienced a major subduction zone earthquake during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 7. The 9.5 quake lasted five minutes and was centered off the Oregon Coast.  The Northwest was paralyzed and likely still would be paralyzed from Ashland, OR to Vancouver, B.C.
The major shake resulted in a 7.5 earthquake in Shoreline. I-5 was shut down.  No 911. No cell. No land line. No power. No water.

Experts estimate that 20,000 of your fellow PNW citizens perished.

This was ‘just a drill’ -- called Cascadia Rising -- and a rehearsal for a real subduction zone event, which is believed to be in our future. Experts believe the ‘Cascadia Rising’ event is merely a question of when, not if.

How would you get word to your out of state contacts that you and your family survived? How would you get critical information in or out of your neighborhood?

In a disaster, the ACS vans and ham operators will be
the only means of communication

Eighteen Shoreline Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) volunteers participated for 10 hours on the first day of the Cascadia Rising drill, which focused on city, county, and statewide communications.

The drill emphasized training on passing hypothetical damage reports and resource needs from Shoreline fire stations to the Shoreline Emergency Management Coordinator in the Emergency Operations Center, and then to the King County Emergency Operations Center. Damage reports included collapsed and damaged schools, trapped kids, collapsed overpasses, and more.

Some 30 ACS volunteers staff the radio rooms at the fire stations for weekly tests, monthly training, and this annual international event, called Field Day.

These same volunteers will be demonstrating the art of long distance communications during the Shoreline Arts Festival at Shoreline Center soccer field, June 25th.

Members of the Shoreline ACS will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 25 – 26 at Shoreline Center.

Look for the van at the Shoreline Center this weekend

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio.

This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. If you are visiting the Shoreline Arts Festival this weekend please come and see us in action on the field located between the Spartan Rec. Center and Shoreline Stadium.

Field Day is an international competition to test the skills of your Shoreline ACS team and the stand-alone radio equipment necessary to connect with the world when all other means are destroyed or overloaded with traffic. The standalone equipment, most owned and donated to the cause for the exercise by the volunteers, includes generators, radios, antennae, and most importantly, dedicated, trained, skilled, and licensed radio operators. Even though the goal is to make as many contacts as possible during a 24 hour period, the real underlying goal is to be fully prepared to let the world know of Shoreline’s needs and welfare after a major disaster.

Shoreline ACS is a nonprofit. Donations and new members are always welcome.

We encourage Shoreline and nearby area Hams to check-in on our weekly net, 7:30pm every Monday on the Shoreline repeater (442.825+, 103.5). Or join us at our monthly meetings, second Saturday of each month from 10:00-12:00 at Station 61 (175th and Aurora). You can become part of the solution!

Walk your dog to raise funds for Old Dog Haven

Old Dog Haven 5th Annual Walk for Old Dogs and Old Dog Pageant
Sunday, July 17, 11:00-3:00
Cromwell Park
18030 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133
Registration fee: $25 (includes a Walk tote bag)
Old Dogs, young dogs, and people of all ages welcome!

The Walk for Old Dogs is Old Dog Haven’s biggest annual fundraiser. Vet bills to care for the senior 300 dogs in permanent foster care average about $80,000 per month and every penny raised at the Walk will be used to help the dogs.

What began five years ago as a way to raise money and provide an opportunity for people who love old dogs to spend time together has morphed into the largest gathering of old dogs ever held anywhere in the U.S.

You have to be there to believe it!

Last year, in spite of record-breaking heat, over 400 people and their dogs came to not only support Old Dog Haven but to celebrate the value of old dogs in our community. (The dogs cooled off in kiddy pools around the park and they’ll be available again this year.)

Dogs of every imaginable breed and size walked on four legs, three legs, hauled carts, rode in strollers, wore costumes, socialized, made new friends, smiled their best dog smiles, and loved being celebrated by their families.

And … over $90,000 was raised!

This event is an experience you won’t want to miss. The Walk is a fun 1/3 mile promenade to celebrate with our senior dogs. It's a nice stroll on a paved path along lawns and fields. Walk as much (or as little) as you and your dog prefer. Before the walk you can browse the many sponsor booths (many offering samples and goodies) and pet-related vendors.

Go to the Walk website to register, make a donation if you’re unable to attend (Old Dog Haven is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — donations are tax-deductible) and find out everything you need to know about the event.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR THE EVENT INCLUDE:
  • Old Dog Pageant: Best Costume, Best Decorated Stroller, Best Trick, 30 Yard Lollygag
  • Old Dog Haven race car: Every time Gene Melange races at Evergreen Speedway he promotes Old Dog Haven. He’ll be at the Walk with his car, and even though you can’t drive it you and your dog could have your photo taken with the car to show that Old Dog Haven is on the fast track!
  • Pet-related vendors
  • Old Dog Haven t-shirts and books will also be available for purchase.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraising teams, the top three individual fundraisers and Pageant winners.

Food trucks, including nationally recognized The Seattle Barkery, (the food truck for dogs) will be there with ice-pops from Six Strawberries, vegan ice cream sandwiches from The Cookie Cutter, and the Legendary Latke Press sandwiches from Napkin Friends.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

11:00-12:00 Registration and Meet Our Sponsors

12:00-12:30 Welcome and Fundraising awards and prizes

12:30-1:00 Walk for Old Dogs

1:00-2:30 Old Dog Pageant and Awards for Pageant Winners

Rev. Kelly Dahlman-Oeth has been appointed pastor of Ronald United Methodist Church in Shoreline effective July 1, 2016.

Dahlman-Oeth served a nine year pastorate at Lake Washington United Methodist Church (UMC) in Kirkland and a previous long-term pastorate at Brown’s Point.

His ministry at Lake Washington included an innovative car campership for the homeless.

At his new ministry in Shoreline, he will become involved in the Ronald Commons Project. Construction of the new building behind the church is a little over half way done with move-in scheduled for February.

Ronald Commons is a partnership among Ronald United Methodist Church, Compass Housing Alliance, and Hopelink. It includes sixty affordable apartments owned and operated by Compass Housing Alliance; an integrated service center with support programs including a food bank owned and operated by Hopelink; and a remodel of Ronald United Methodist Church.

The remodel of the church was completed in April. According to Rev. Rich Lang, Seattle District Superintendent of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church, Pastor Kelly will bring deep competence in leadership to the next phase of the Ronald Commons Project as well as gifts of pastoral care and preaching.

The congregation looks forward to welcoming Pastor Kelly Dahlman-Oeth on July 3rd, the first Sunday in July.

Ronald UMC’s outgoing pastor, Rev. Paula McCutcheon was instrumental in the visioning, planning, and bringing to fruition Phase I of Ronald Commons.

Adoption search news update

By Pam Queen, WARM

EXTENDED family members can search for the biological family of a deceased adoptee or birth parent if the adoptee was born and/or adopted in Washington State.

The family member of a deceased adoptee or birth parent may be a sibling, aunt, uncle, or grand-parent. These types of searches would be via a court order process through WARM (Washington Adoption Reunion Movement).

Other news is for REUNITED adoptees or birth parents. If the adoption was finalized in King County and you know all the names of the pertinent parties to the adoption, a copy of the King County sealed file can be requested PROVIDING the documents can be picked up at the King County Clerk’s office when you are informed they are signed and ready. Otherwise, King County will only mail the Decree of Adoption and not the entire file. The release of the file and/or decree is predicated on the judge signing the court order.

The above information for EXTENDED family members or REUNITED adoptees and birth parents is only a short description of the entire process.

For more information on either of these processes, please contact WARM – Washington Adoption Reunion Movement 206-767-9510 or at warm@warmsearch.org.

Lake Forest Park resident Barbara Johnson recognized with Positive Aging award

Barbara Johnson
Sound Generations, formerly Senior Services, granted 2016 Inspire Positive Aging Awards to five people in King County, out of 44 nominations.

Lake Forest Park resident Barbara Johnson was recognized in the category of Lifelong Learning.

In June 2016, Sound Generations – a nonprofit serving 83,000 seniors and adults with disabilities throughout King County – recognized five people for its 2016 Inspire Positive Aging Awards.

The award was created in 2006 to recognize older adults in King County whose lives inspire us about how to age with grace, enthusiasm, creativity, hope and energy.

Lake Forest Park resident Barbara “BJ” Johnson (95) was granted the Inspire Positive Aging Award in the category of Lifelong Learning.

Barbara is the most senior of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center’s Hula group: the Kupunas. A Kupuna, a Hawaiian word, “is an honored elder who has acquired enough life experience to become a family and community leader”.

Barbara joined the group when she was 87 and celebrated her 95th birthday this year. She practices every week and performs with the group at least two times a year. Her infectious smile and positive attitude is an inspiration for all 15 members, and mesmerizes audience members with her grace.

Despite two hip surgeries and surviving lung cancer (although she never smoked), Barb loves to dance. When she was in her 80s, her daughters gave her tap shoes and a tap platform. Little did they know that she would tap dance for hours at a time. She then joined the Kupuna Hula group at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

Her nominator said, “It is a joy to watch Barb dance. Her love of Hula and the delight she has in life shines through. She is such an inspiration to all of the Kupunas: we aspire to dance like her until we are 95+ years old and to enjoy every facet of life like Barb. She is truly the most beautiful and inspirational senior one could ever meet!”

Other award recipients included Geraldine Allsopp for Health and Wellness, Fai Coffin for Advocacy and Activism, Richard Body for Community Service, and Dr. Dominick Minotti for Intergenerational Impact.

Sound Generations, formerly Senior Services, is the most comprehensive non-profit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington State.
