A talented artist, she has shown her work at the Arts Festival in the youth exhibit since she was in 1st grade. Many of her artworks won first place and were chosen for the Shoreline School District calendars.

In February 2016, the Lynnwood Art Commission selected her for a solo art exhibition. She has also been accepted into the 16th Annual Kenmore Art Show in 2014 and the Kenmore Youth Art Exhibit in 2015.  In 2010 and 2012, she won the Washington State PTA Reflections Awards of Excellence for Visual Arts. She studies art with renowned Chinese American artist Long Gao.

Sue Ellen is passionate about her creativity. Besides art, she also enjoys piano, swimming, and ballet. She has been dancing at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School for over 7 years, and has performed in “The Nutcracker”, “Don Quixote”, and “Snow White” at McCaw Hall.

Sue Ellen’s oil paintings and drawings are a reflection of what she sees and experiences.

Joy

She says, “They are also a way for me to practice my skills as an artist and gain knowledge about different types of art. I enjoy the freedom of changing something to what I want it to look like, and to the style that expresses a mood.”

Former Director of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council Fred Wong said this about her work: "She tells her stories not as a sequence of events, but as eddies pouring from her imagination. At her most successful, she takes the styles and techniques she’s learned, and bends them to tell her stories. She paints to shape her life, and all the elements into a beautiful whole."

Flag Day, Tuesday, June 14

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.[1] The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.[2][3]

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday.

Let SHIBA help you understand Medicare at workshop June 18

Turning 65? Navigating Medicare options can be a bewildering maze. Every insurance provider in the state will be sending packets of shiny sales brochures.

The challenge is to buy the right amount of coverage for your health and budget. Insurance reps will tell you about the options within their product but may not be able to help you compare products and choose appropriate options.

The online Medicare.gov site is good information but like many bureaucratic websites, it can be difficult to find specifically what you need to know.

Knowing this, the State Insurance Commissioners office has assembled a group of retired insurance professionals who will help you through the maze.

Saturday, June 18, 10am – 12:30pm
Shoreline Conference Center
north end of complex
18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155

SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefit Advisors) hold regular sessions at local libraries.

On Saturday they will stage a complete workshop, covering Medicare A, B, C and D. They will help you understand your Medicare benefits and options, and tell you where to find help paying for Medicare if you qualify.

Tell them you are planning to attend:

Point Wells project impact statement delayed again

By Evan Smith

Planning for the proposed Point Wells project has been delayed again.

Snohomish County planners now say that the draft environmental impact statement will come out in October rather than in July as reported earlier.

That means that the 45-day period for comments about the draft statement has advanced from summer to late fall.

The delay in the draft EIS came about because of errors by a contractor hired to write the section on traffic impacts, errors that forced the contractor to redo its work.

Snohomish County Principal planner Ryan Countryman said Friday that the traffic study was the main missing piece for the draft statement.

He said that the draft statement would include discussion of engineering of a road through Woodway. Such a road would be the required second road to the proposed project.

Currently, the only road to or from the development is a narrow, two-lane road through the Richmond Beach area of Shoreline. The road, Richmond Beach Drive NW, crosses the King - Snohomish County line into the southwest corner of the town of Woodway before reaching Point Wells.

Developer Blue Star Real Estate has proposed building 3,081 condominium units along with 125,000 square feet of retail and commercial space on the industrial site, a site that is within the urban growth area of Woodway.

After the comment period, another contractor working for the county planning department will write the final environmental impact statement, something that may not come until 2018.

Planner Countryman said that developer BSRE has decided not to comment before the draft statement but to comment before a final EIS.

In addition to the environmental impact statement, the project needs approval from a Snohomish County design review board.

This is the latest of a long series of delays to planning for the Point Wells project. A representative of the developer had been quoted in an April 2014 Everett Herald article as saying that he then estimated that completion of the environmental impact statement would come by the end of that year.

To write the final environmental impact statement, Countryman said in early February, planners need responses from the developer to requests for several pieces of information.

He said in February that the developer hadn’t replied to questions about the correct number of units and the correct number of parking spaces in addition to questions about a second road.

Countryman said then that planning officials first had asked for the information in 2013.

Countryman sent a letter to Huff last summer asking for clarification on the number of units, the number of parking spaces and plans for a second road.

Once Snohomish County planners finish the final environmental impact statement, they can make a recommendation to a county hearing examiner for planning and zoning matters.

Countryman says that, without the missing information, county planners could not recommend approval of the project.

The hearing examiner will consider written and oral testimony before deciding whether to approve the plan, reject the plan, approve the plan with conditions, or remand it to the planning department for further revisions.

A hearing examiner’s decision can be appealed to the Snohomish County council, with a further appeal to the Snohomish County Superior Court.

In addition to getting a permit from Snohomish County, the developer needs to get approval from the state Department of Ecology of an environmental cleanup on the site, which for decades has been used for petroleum shipping and storage. The operator of the oil facilities has yet to start the environmental-cleanup process.

916 students take the Fix a Leak Challenge

Ms. Benson’s 4th Grade – Brookside
won the big prize of $500 in school supplies

What do you get when 916 Shoreline area students (aka Leak Detectives) take the Fix a Leak Challenge? No less than 229 leaky toilets identified!

North City Water District partnered with Shoreline area schools for the annual Fix-A-Leak Challenge.

Eighty-nine teachers agreed to distribute toilet dye strip test kits to their students, along with the challenge to be “Leak Detectives” and test their home toilets for leaks.

Given that toilets are the #1 cause of undetected water leaks and resulting high water bills, these simple tests are a great way to stop money from “going down the drain” for homeowners, businesses, and schools alike.

Special recognition goes out to the following eleven classrooms that had 100% participation, which qualified their class for entry into a drawing for some special prizes:

Ms. Ness’s Kindergarten – Kings School
    Ms. Dunphy’s 1st Grade – Kings School
    Mr. Blanchard’s 2nd Grade – Echo Lake
    Ms. White’s 2nd Grade – Kings School

    Ms. Walsh’s 5th Grade – Kings
    Ms. Lersch’s 5th Grade – St. Mark’s

Ms. Lersch's 5th Grade at St. Marks
won a class pizza party

On May 14, North City Water District Commissioner Charlotte Haines conducted the drawing during the Shoreline STEM festival. The following classrooms won prizes:

David Frockt, 46th District representative to the Washington State Senate, was presented with the Ancil Payne Civic Leader of the Year Award from Washington CeaseFire on May 24 for his steadfast, dedicated work to reduce gun violence.

The award was presented at the annual Washington CeaseFire luncheon held at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

Washington CeaseFire, a statewide organization dedicated to reducing gun violence, gives the  Ancil Payne Award to outstanding civic leaders and advocates for gun safety measures.

“For too many, the specter of gun violence continues to plague our communities and families,” said Sen. David Frockt, D-Seattle.
“I am honored to receive Washington CeaseFire’s Ancil Payne Award and pledge to continue working toward our common goal of reducing gun violence.”

This is the second year in a row that a local legislator has been honored with this award. In 2015 the Ancil Payne Civic Leader of the Year Award was given to 32nd District Rep. Ruth Kagi, for her work as a legislator to reduce gun violence, especially among children.

Lake Forest Park and Kenmore are in the 46th District; Shoreline is in the 32nd District.

Youth Council Year End Update

Lake Forest Park Youth Council

The Lake Forest Park Youth Council is committed to participating in community and government oriented events that better our city.

This year, Youth Council members were involved in many important events within the community. Members were proud to be a part of the Lake Forest Park Safety Fair in September where they assisted in setting up the room for the event and helped organize the different displays and presenters showcasing safety information.

Many members were able to partake in the Get Up and Go 5k which brought the whole community together.

On Halloween, at the Third Place Commons, members dedicated their evening to help put on a fun event for young kids in the community by running a face painting station for toddlers and passing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

The Youth Council was also busy with internal changes during its own meetings as they updated its bylaws to better ensure that members were contributing fully to the community.

All of the Youth Council members are excited to be working on the addition of a Youth Council specific webpage for the Lake Forest Park government website.

An event at Town Center

The Youth Council also partook in many outdoor restorations of parks including Lyon Creek Waterfront Reserve and Whispering Willow Park.

Making holiday cards for retirement homes is also a favorite activity for many members.

Volunteering at PoPY’s café this past May involved many members helping with dish duty during the free community dinner for homeless Seattleites.

These are just a few of the many activities and community service projects that the Youth Council participated in this year, we are all very excited to continue our service and keep a youth voice in the city.

Lake Forest Park residents in Grades 8-12 who have an interest in being actively involved in the Lake Forest Park community are encouraged to apply to become members of the Youth Council.

Applications are accepted all year and the Youth Council welcomes and encourages new passionate members. Joining Youth Council is an excellent way to get involved in the community. Being a Youth Council member also presents new individual opportunities such as possible internships with various city departments. Above all, it is a great way to meet new people and give back to Lake Forest Park.

Review: Suite Surrender

Suite Surrender
By Michael McKeever
Directed by Dale Westgaard
Edmonds Driftwood Players
June 10 – June 26, 2016

Review by Doug Gochanour

The younger generation may not be familiar with United Service Organizations, also known as USO. It was started in 1941, to give American soldiers a place to unwind and be entertained. Talented performers of all kinds took stage shows to troops in the field, and set up clubs in many areas here in the homeland and around the world. To raise funds to support USO, big name stars eagerly participated in benefit performances.

What happens when two feuding, rival Divas are signed up for the same USO benefit tour, and end up at the same hotel? In this case, two starlets, who hate each other, are booked into the very same Presidential Suite at the luxurious Palm Beach Royale Hotel. This sets the scene for potential disaster, with a lurking scandal reporter hoping to get a scoop on the battle.

Complications continue to mount, to the enjoyment of the audience. Where there are two divas, there are surely two personal secretaries, in this case, Murphy and Pippet. They are extremely meek characters, which serves to further the hilarity. Relationship questions come into play involving flowers from Francis the bellhop. How will love and sanity be able to prevail?

Whimsical mayhem and madness erupts as the handlers of each Diva, and the hotel staff, try to keep the Divas apart. The General Manager, Bernard Dunlap, does everything in his power to keep each Diva happy, assisted by his two bumbling bellhops.
Meanwhile some US Navy boys nearly burn the house down, at the invitation of a Society Matron. Some of the military guests enjoy jumping off balconies into the hotel pool. Even a Diva’s dog takes the plunge.

Be ready to laugh at the antics of these characters as they experience mistaken identity, physical comedy, and plenty of fast paced action. Discover the real secret behind the relationship between the dueling Divas. You will marvel at the wonderful performance of this talented cast.
