BALNA's Spring Clean-up Event at Aldercrest Park Saturday

BALNA's Spring Clean-up Event
at Aldercrest park & 25th Ave Adopt-A-Road

Saturday ~ May 21 ~ 9:00 - 11:30 am
(meet on 25th Ave by the tennis courts)

Whether you like walking the park or 25th Ave to help clear litter, or tackling 'yard work' type activities, we can use your help. Students can earn community service hours.

Come for 30 minutes, an hour, or two. Any amount of time contributed makes a big difference. This is a fun and satisfying way to impact our neighborhood and keep our community spaces looking sharp!

If you have a gas-powered weed whacker, it would contribute to making quick work of clearing the overgrowth from the fence line and tennis courts. Sturdy gloves are recommended too, for anyone willing to help pull the old blackberry growth in the baseball dugout.

We'll hold this event rain or shine ~ either way the air will be fresh for the clean-up work!

25th NE, just off Ballinger Way with the Ballinger Neighborhood Association - all volunteers are welcome.

Holocaust survivor Steve Adler to speak in Lynnwood

On Sunday, June 5, Holocaust Survivor Steve Adler will present his incredible story of survival against all odds to the Lynnwood community.

Mr. Adler’s inspiring story takes the audience on a child's journey of exclusion and school bullying in Berlin, to an account of his family's harrowing Kristallnacht experience and its aftermath, to escape from Nazi persecution as a child selected for the Kindertransport (children’s transport).

Stephen (Steve) Adler was born in Berlin, Germany in 1930. He was the younger son in a middle-class, Jewish family. As conditions for the Jewish people worsened in Germany and throughout occupied Europe, Great Britain agreed to allow 10,000 Jewish children from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia to immigrate to England via Kindertransport (children’s transport), leaving their families behind. Private citizens or organizations were required to guarantee to pay for each child's care, education, and eventual emigration from Britain. Parents or guardians could not accompany the children. In March 1939, Steve was sent by train to Hamburg to join a Kindertransport going to England by ship. Steve arrived in London knowing only one sentence in English.

Mr. Adler will be speaking at the Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County from 11am - 12:30pm on June 5. The address of the Center is 19626 76th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA. This event is free and open to the public.

Steve’s presentation is co-sponsored by the Holocaust Center for Humanity and the Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County.

Plan ahead now for smoother Memorial Day travel

The 520 bridge will be on holiday rates on Memorial Day

‘Know before you go’ the key to negotiating holiday traffic: tips from WSDOT

With Memorial Day fast approaching, now is the time to start planning ahead to avoid spending the holiday weekend stuck in traffic.

Drivers can use the Washington State Department of Transportation’s traffic volume charts to help time their travel on key routes throughout the weekend.

Drivers also can:
  • Check out WSDOT’s mobile app, social media sites – such as Twitter and Facebook – and online tools for traffic information and ferry schedules to “know before you go.”
  • Pre-program your vehicle radio to 530 AM and 1610 AM for highway advisory radio alerts.
  • Allow extra time for holiday travel and congestion; consider traveling during non-peak hours; stay alert to avoid collisions in congested areas.
To ease congestion, most state highway construction work is suspended during the holiday weekend. Across the Vantage Bridge on Interstate 90, though, eastbound drivers will experience delays due to a round-the-clock single-lane closure. In addition, loads over 14 feet wide are prohibited in both directions.

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30:
Washington State Ferries passengers should expect heavier traffic during the holiday weekend and reservations are strongly recommended for the Anacortes/San Juan Islands, Anacortes/Sidney, British Columbia and Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry routes.
Travelers planning to avoid highway congestion by traveling by train, personal aircraft or bus also should factor the holiday into their plans:
  • Amtrak Cascades passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets early and should plan to arrive at the station one hour before departure. Book now or call 800–USA–RAIL for details.
  • WSDOT provides updates on state-operated airports online, or 800-552-0666.
  • Most public transit systems will follow a holiday schedule, and some transit systems will not operate fixed-route or Dial-A-Ride service on holidays.

ICHS recognized by Centers for Disease Control as Hypertension Control Champion

Shoreline ICHS Clinic
International Community Health Services (ICHS) has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of only 18 Hypertension Control Champions in the nation.

ICHS is the only one in Washington state to be named a 2015 Hypertension Control Champion, which honors health organizations that used evidence-based strategies and patient engagement to help their patients achieve blood pressure control rates at or above the Million Hearts target of 70 percent.

The 18 Champions, ranging from small practices to large health care systems throughout the U.S., provide care to nearly 1.5 million adults.

Nearly 1 in 3 American adults has high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. Nearly half of adults with high blood pressure do not have their condition under control.

Even more alarming, millions of Americans have high blood pressure that is undiagnosed or untreated. High blood pressure may also contribute to the development of dementia. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched the Million Hearts national initiative, with public and private partners, in 2011.

ICHS has a major medical and dental clinic in Shoreline at 16549 Aurora Ave N, 98133.

17th of May Celebration, aka Syttende Mai [Soot-n-duh My] - Norwegian Constitution Day is a day of celebration and national pride for all Norwegians everywhere.

Seattle's Ballard neighborhood is one of the centers of Nordic settlement in Puget Sound (along with Richmond Beach in Shoreline, Poulsbo on the Kitsap peninsula, and Norway Park near Mount Vernon) Ballard has celebrated with parties and parades since 1889. Their celebration is now the largest outside of Norway.

Shoreline’s Million Stair Challenge

Challenge yourself, challenge others, and win prizes in this month long event.

Shoreline’s Million Stair Challenge is back for 2016 with some exciting new changes! During the month of June, the City of Shoreline invites the community to climb as many stairs as possible at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in hopes of making our community goal of 4 million stairs.

New for 2016, we are launching a new online tracking system that will allow participants to log their stair totals and see them immediately at shorelinewa.gov/stairs. Also new for 2016, participants will be able to set a climbing goal online with prizes awarded to those who make their goal.

All participants of the Million Stair Challenge are invited to an end of the challenge potluck on Thursday, June 30 at 6:00pm. Bring a dish to share and join us at picnic shelter located at the bottom of the stairs. We’ll award prizes to participants who make their climbing goals.

In 2012, the Parks and Recreation Department created the first Million Stair Challenge hoping to encourage more use of the park and its very large set of stairs. Since then the stairs at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park have become one of the most popular fitness spots in Shoreline and every June hundreds of Million Stair Challenge participants come out to meet the challenge set forth by the City of Shoreline.

The Million Stair Challenge starts on June 1st this year and runs through the end of the month. More details on the Million Stair Challenge, including prizes and more instructions, can be found at shorelinewa.gov/stairs or by contacting Recreation Specialist Marianne Johnson at 206-801-2638.

King County Exec proposes partnership with Housing Authority

King County Executive Dow Constantine today proposed a new partnership with the King County Housing Authority that would develop or preserve more than 2,000 units of affordable housing with low-cost financing made possible by the county's stellar credit rating.

Under the Executive's proposal, King County Housing Authority would have access to King County's triple-A credit rating. That would enable the Housing Authority to develop or preserve up to 2,200 units of affordable housing over the next six years in strategic locations, such as near mass transit or high-performing schools.

"To ensure a strong, thriving middle class in our region, we must have more housing that is both affordable and connected to opportunity," said Executive Constantine. "By joining forces with the King County Housing Authority, we will deliver more than two thousand units of affordable housing countywide -- near mass transit and in vibrant neighborhoods."

Department of Health holding Northwest Hospital accountable for failing to report drug diverting surgical technician

The Department of Health issued a Statement of Deficiencies to Northwest Hospital for failing to appropriately investigate and report suspected drug diversion by a former surgical technician, Rocky Allen, who worked there in 2012.

The deficiencies identified by the Department of Health center on the hospital’s failure to respond appropriately to suspected drug diversion by Allen. Allen is currently awaiting trial on federal criminal charges for diverting medications while working at a hospital in Colorado.

State regulations require health care facilities in Washington to report to the Department of Health within 20 days when they determine an employee who holds a health care credential may have committed professional misconduct, such as drug diversion. The department’s investigation found the hospital failed to adequately investigate suspected diversion by Rocky Allen and did not report the incident as required.

The investigation could not confirm conclusively whether Allen actually diverted drugs while at this hospital or if his drug-related misconduct infected patients.

The hospital has ten days to respond. DOH will review and proceed from there.

There was no evidence of any patient exposure, and the risk is thought to be very low.

However Northwest has notified patients who had surgery during Allen’s employment and recommended that they be tested for blood borne pathogens.

The State Department of Health recognizes first responders during the 42nd Annual National Emergency Services Week, May 15-21, and calls on more volunteers to serve.

"Emergency Services Week is an opportunity to recognize our first responders who provide lifesaving and medical services in our communities," said Secretary of Health, John Weisman.
"Our Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Care system are part of the very fabric of our communities, but they are in need of volunteers to continue providing these necessary services."

More than 16,000 EMS and TC system professionals are part of a network supported by local and regional partners.

The network includes eight regional EMS and Trauma Care councils work with local councils to develop and implement plans to ensure services are available across the state.

To learn more about becoming an EMS or TC system volunteer, contact your local fire department.

To find out more about regional councils and how to volunteer as a regional council member visit the Regional EMS and Trauma Resources webpage.

About four in 10 deaths from trauma occur within hours of injury. Since Washington’s EMS and TC system began, the death rate for trauma patients involved in traffic collisions has decreased.

Gray skies didn't dampen Maifest celebration

Dancing round the indoor May Pole

Text and photos by Martin Kral

Despite Saturday's gray skies and steady sprinkle, those spring showers did not dampen the mood of Kenmore's Maifest celebrants.

The band played traditional music for dancing

The Austria Club of Washington's traditional dance around the may pole took place indoors with the music of Happy Hans and participatory dancing lead by members of the Enzian Schuhplattler.

Families keeping traditions alive

The Kenmore Community Hall hosted nearly 100 guests who enjoyed a potluck buffet featuring the superb Weißwurst and Leberkäse from Pannonia Smokehouse in Shoreline's North City.

Plan on coming next May and make it a tradition to join the revelry in Kenmore.

The Sasquatch lives in Shoreline - new campaign speaks to non-residents

Shoreline's new ambassador
Squatch
Shoreline has launched a promotional campaign aimed at attracting residents and businesses.

Led by consultant PRR, the city surveyed over 600 non-residents to help shape the campaign’s message.

“Other cities have asked us to help them reach outside their borders,” stated Denise Walz, PRR Co-President and Shoreline resident, “but Shoreline was the very first to ask us to research what non-residents thought.”

The results were dramatic, showing that while potential residents appreciate the qualities that Shoreline offers, many either know little about Shoreline or harbor misperceptions against it.

The campaign responds directly to these findings through a new website, SurprisedByShoreline.com, which simultaneously informs and debunks. Visitors quickly engage with the very best of Shoreline in a playful, illustrated style that appeals to all ages.

To help the curious find SurprisedByShoreline.com, the campaign introduces a new Shoreline ambassador: Squatch. Squatch is the friendly sasquatch who has lived in Shoreline for years, but since people know so little about Shoreline, they think he’s been hiding. Squatch wants everyone to learn more about Shoreline and its wonderful people and places.

Look for Squatch encouraging those who “don’t know Squatch about Shoreline” to visit SurprisedByShoreline.com. You may see Squatch riding buses, on drink coasters, at the farmers market, on social media, or even in his own coloring book!

Not a scam: SSA letters alert qualified Medicare clients about missed benefits

Starting this week, many Medicare clients will receive a letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) telling them they may qualify for help with their out-of-pocket medical and drug expenses.

The Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) program encourages clients who receive these letters to take action to learn more about the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and Extra Help. SHIBA is a free, unbiased program of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

SSA sends the letters annually to people on Medicare with limited Social Security incomes who could be eligible for — but are not enrolled in an MSP, which helps with Medicare out-of-pocket costs, or Extra Help, which helps with the costs of prescription drugs.

“These letters are not a scam,” said Todd Dixon, SHIBA program manager. “They are an important notification that Medicare clients should review and consider. We can help determine if they’re eligible, apply, enroll and even understand how to use their new benefits once they’ve been approved.”

Anyone who receives a letter—or who believes they or a loved one may be able to get help from these programs—should contact SHIBA for help at 1-800-562-6900.
