Thoroughly Modern Millie

Its 1922, and small-town girl Millie Dillmount has just arrived in New York City, ready to make her dreams come true. Millie's plan is simple: find a job as a secretary for an eligible bachelor, and then marry him. It doesn't take long, however, for Millie's thoroughly modern plan to go awry.

Her conniving landlady plots to kidnap Millie's best friend and sell her into slavery in Hong Kong, her wealthy boss seems entirely uninterested in her flirtations, and -- worst of all -- the man with whom she falls head over heels in love doesn't have a penny to his name.

Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Musical, this bright, funny, and charming musical comedy is a heartfelt valentine to New York City and the people who love her.

A multi-cultural celebration of music and dance in July

www.jhplegacy.org
By Eden Pobee

For the past several years we have been cultural educators in colleges and communities.

We believe in diversity and cultural education; we put together cultural events to educate the less privileged, that is, people who have not had the chance to see other parts of the world or other traditions and cultures.

In view of that, we are dedicated to follow our passion by educating the communities and colleges through traditional drumming, traditional dances, poetry, live band music by Empty Vessels Crew, step dance and many more.

Saturday, July 9, 7-10pm at the Shorewood High School Theatre, 17300 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline 98133. Tickets $20, students $10, at the door.

CULTURAL HERITAGE 2016 will present a vibrant and unique celebration featuring unparalleled music and dance performance. At this event, we will educate people on an everyday life of an average African through Dance-Drama, on top of that, a fashion show by Adeshie Collection and Ayo Designs will slay the curiosity in our eyes with African designs fashion Show. Famous American artist, (the late Prince's backup singer), Portland based Saeeda Wright will do one of her singles on that night as well.

Northwest audiences are incredibly fortunate for the opportunity to witness such an event with so much education incorporated! JHP Cultural and Diversity Legacy and Adeshie Collection has the ability to celebrate past traditions while expanding to embrace new ideas and foreign influences through traditional music and Dance! Music4Life & Oxford Entertainment Team Up for Kids

Randy Oxford partnering with Music4Life™

Oxford Entertainment is teaming up with Seattle-based Music4Life™ to provide ready-to-play musical instruments to students in need. The announcement comes from Randy Oxford, a noted blues instrumentalist and member of the Washington State Blues Hall of Fame, and David Endicott, President/CEO of Music4Life.

"I am a full time professional musician, band leader, concert promoter, producer and booking agent,” Oxford says. “I travel quite a bit for my music career and have made contacts in the business throughout the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Central America and beyond.
"Music4Life is such a great organization for helping students. Finding donated instruments for kids is a natural thing for me to do because I have so many contacts in the music business."

In addition to having been inducted into the Washington state Blues Society hall of fame, since the year 2000 Oxford has been the recipient of multiple music awards from the Washington Blues Society, including the ‘Life Time Achievement,’ ‘Keeping the Blues Alive,’ ‘Entertainer of the Year,’ ‘Instrumentalist of the Year,’ ‘Best Band’ and ‘Best Northwest Recording’ awards.

David Endicott, Executive Director, said “Lovingly used musical instruments that adults have in their garages or attics or financial resources to buy new instruments as schools tell us of their needs. Randy Oxford can help us fill both needs. We are most grateful for his support.”

Music4Life™ provides musical instruments to participating schools for students in need. The Seattle-based non-profit acquires “lovingly used” musical instruments from adults who no longer need them, gets them repaired and then provides them to participating public school districts for use by students who need them. Besides Seattle Public Schools, Music4Life also operates programs supporting Edmonds, Highline, Mukilteo and Shoreline Public Schools.

The program acquires used instruments from adults who understand that their highest and best use is to put them back into play. With adequate financial resources, Music4Life also buys new musical instruments for school districts.

Follow-up: Barricaded Standoff ends Peacefully With 2 Suspects Arrested

Statement from the King County Sheriff's Office

Two juveniles have been turned over to Lynnwood Police after they were arrested at the end of a 2.5 hour standoff with Shoreline Police and the King County Sheriff’s Office. The two are suspects in at least one theft from a gun store in Lynnwood and possibly several robberies in the Shoreline area.

On May 11, 2016, at around 5:49pm, Shoreline Police detectives, acting on tips from the Lynnwood PD and the public, were in the 1500 block of NW Richmond Beach Road, in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Shoreline. The detectives were doing surveillance on suspects in the theft of a gun from a gun store in Lynnwood that occurred on May 9th.

Additionally, the Shoreline detectives believed that the same suspects in the gun theft were also suspects of 3 robberies that had occurred in the city of Shoreline over the past two weeks.

At 5:56pm, just 7 minutes after the surveillance began, Detectives observed a group of 4 males walking in the area. Two of the males matched the suspects that they were looking for in the theft and robbery cases. As the detectives approached the group, three of them ran to a nearby house on 15th Ave NW. The fourth male did not run and surrendered at the scene.

Detectives were able to quickly confirm that at least one of the suspects lived in the house and that there were no unwilling occupants inside. Initially, at least one of the suspects stood inside at the front door of the house taunting the police and refusing to come outside.

Because of the violent nature of the crimes the juveniles were suspected of, the detectives surrounded the house and called for the King County Sheriff Tac-30 (SWAT) team as well as the King County Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT).

Additionally, King County Sheriff 911 communications made several attempts to establish phone contact with the occupants of the house. During the conversations, they were again able to confirm that nobody other than the 3 juveniles that had run from Detectives were in the house. The occupants of the house also told KCSO 911 communications that they were not going to come out of the house.

For 2.5 hours, while KCSO TAC-30 members had the house surrounded, Detectives, KCSO HNT, and KCSO 911 continued to negotiate with the occupants to come out and surrender peacefully. At around 8:26pm, the handwork by all paid off, and all three occupants of the house came out and surrendered peacefully to the TAC-30 team.

After the house was cleared of other occupants by TAC-30 members, and after a search warrant had been obtained, Detectives from Shoreline, King County Major Crimes, and Lynnwood began searching the house. Evidence from the gun theft in Lynnwood as well as robberies that had occurred in the Shoreline area was recovered inside the house.

All four individuals, the 1 that did not run, and the 3 that surrendered from the house are juveniles and will not be named at this point. They are all Black males in their mid teens. Two were turned over to Lynnwood PD and two were released to their parents.

The investigation is ongoing and will be handled by Shoreline, KCSO Major Crimes, and Lynnwood PD for the various crimes that occurred in their jurisdictions.

By 9pm they had also commandeered the parking lot at Spin Alley for their vehicles.

According to Shoreline police,

"Earlier this evening, Shoreline Detectives developed a lead on suspects that stole a pistol from a Snohomish County gun store. They contacted the suspects in the Richmond Beach area and one complied while the others ran into a nearby house.

"Due to the possibility of the suspects being armed, the house was surrounded and the KCSO Negotiations team and SWAT unit were called out. After some persuasive conversation, the remaining suspects gave up without fanfare."

The street was starting to clear by 9:45pm

After about an hour and a half, they surrendered peacefully. Two were taken into custody and two were released to their parents. No shots were fired and no one was hurt.

"Great teamwork was displayed by our Detectives, Shoreline Patrol, Kenmore Patrol, KCSO Detectives/HNT/SWAT, and Shoreline Fire.

"Suspects are being booked and the investigation is ongoing."

Shorecrest tennis team at SubDistrict

By Robert Mann

The Shorecrest girls tennis team played in day one of the subdistrict tournament against Lakewood (L), Archbishop Murphy (AM), and Granite Falls (GF) at Granite Falls High School.

The Shorecrest players started strong with all three singles players and all three doubles players winning their first match of the day.

Some players had a long day because they kept winning and had to play three matches in one day in the heat.

The top two doubles teams from Shorecrest will square off in the championship match Wednesday at 1pm. The winner will get a berth to districts the following week in Bellingham and the loser will have to play the winner of the loser’s bracket to decide the final berth to state.

Sadly, the 3rd doubles team have to forfeit their match tomorrow due to AP testing in the afternoon.

The top two Shorecrest singles players still have hope of making it to the district tournament this year, unfortunately they have to play each other in the finals of the loser’s bracket. The winner of that match will play against the loser of the finals for the final singles berth.

Mystery of Edwin Drood opens Friday at SCC

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a hilarious, interactive whodunit mystery musical that allows the audience to enter the action and become the ultimate detectives.

The show is based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name.

In small town of Chesterham, England, the young and charming Edwin Drood has been mysteriously murdered. But by whom? His leering romantic rival, John Jasper? The infamous purveyor of opium and vice, Princess Puffer? The mysterious Landless twins, newly arrived from Ceylon? Or someone else even more dastardly and villainous?

Dickens passed away before he was able to reveal the culprit. Rupert Holmes’ award-winning musical solves this predicament by asking the audience to choose which character is the killer by putting it to a vote.

Staged in metatheatrical manner by the Shoreline Community College Musical theater department, we have crafted a cast full of colorful characters while reflecting the modern world we live in today--Steampunk elements and gender bent roles. This charming and inventive musical is sure to intrigue and entertain any musical or mystery lover.

All actors play two parts. Each plays an actor of the Music Hall Royale and also the character he or she plays in their production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Adapted from: The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens. Playwright and Lyricist: Rupert Holmes. Directed by Gregory Award winning director and Sound Theatre Company Artistic Director Teresa Thuman. Producer and Music Director: Dr. Charles Enlow. Choreography by Lee Ann Hittenberger

Photos: Poem: The Experience of Joy

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Flowers Excite the Experience of joy

Flowers bring joy to all in Puget Sound,
Especially in spring, they do abound.

Joy is the experience of great delight,
It scares away daunting and threatening fright.

Pause a moment to contemplate their beautiful dress,
Their joyful spirits can help you sweep away any mess.

Joy is Cheerfulness in motion,
It’s as soothing as a healing skin lotion.

Joy in nature is all around,
Open your eyes and wear its crown.

Assessors in Shoreline - follow up

After a recently published story about appraisers for the King County Assessor's Office working in Shoreline, a reader asked if appraisers could enter his yard and worried about how his dogs might react.

According to a spokesperson for the Assessor's Office,

"State law authorizes us to enter every property in the state and requires it at a minimum of once every 6 years. We ask our appraisers to use common sense. If they see a threat such as a dog or a potentially dangerous situation they aren't going to approach it."

Another reader asked how to tell the difference between an authorized appraiser and a burglar casing the street.

The spokesperson said to ask them for ID, which all Assessor's office staff carry.

"Burglars are fast. They want to be in and out undetected. Our appraisers aren't nearly as quick. They are slow because they are documenting everything and taking pictures."

Other people who look suspicious but are authorized are City Light meter readers. They are supposed to wear uniforms, but not all do. They are supposed to carry ID. City Light is in the process of installing meters which will be read remotely, from their facilities. This will replace the door to door meter readers.
