Technical difficulties

For our web, RSS, and email readers - here's the reason we only published one story yesterday, from Assistant Editor (and tech support) Carl Dinse:

Blogger, which is the service we use for the ShorelineAreaNews.com website is currently having a major outage. We are unable to reach the website, or our editing interface for publishing stories at this time. I've checked all of the other sites I know are hosted by blogger and they appear to be offline as well. I have also tested alternative internet connections to make sure it wasn't a comcast specific issue. I have a bunch of stuff in queue to be published but will not be able to do so until this outage is resolved by Google. Thank you for your patience. -Carl Dinse

Shoreline breast cancer patient triumphs with proton therapy

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation that allows doctors to focus directly on the tumor, reducing the potential for side effects.

SCCA Proton Therapy is located on UW Medicine's Northwest Hospital and Medical Center campus in North Seattle and is the only proton therapy center in a seven-state region. The center recently celebrated its third anniversary, and is nearing its 1000th patient mark.

A native of Shoreline, Aimée Huff lives only six short blocks away from the house she grew up in. She has two sons, ages 8 and 12, with her husband, Tom. By day she works as a financial advisor for an independent firm, where she manages financial solutions and plans for clients.

But last spring, just shy of her 40th birthday, something happened not according to plan. AimĂ©e found a lump in her breast. Days later she sat in an exam room and listened to her radiologist utter the words “I will be surprised if this is not cancer.” The day was May 18, 2015.

AimĂ©e was diagnosed with Stage 2B/3A Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer. She was selected as a pro-bono candidate for proton therapy and had a very successful run with it, totaling six weeks. She recently graduated on April 13, and received her medal of honor in the form of a “challenge coin” engraved with her patient number, 891. The coin signifies her fight against cancer, so she can put this chapter of her life behind her.

Catio Tour Seattle returns, showcasing the growing trend in enclosed patios for cats

Some of the coolest cats across Seattle are about to throw the open house of the year, and everyone's invited!

Cat in his catio

After a successful debut tour in 2015, Catio Tour Seattle is back. On Saturday, May 21, 2016 (noon-4 p.m.) more cat-loving communities will showcase their inspiring backyard transformations, which help keep their feline friends safe and their neighborhoods a haven for wildlife.

Catios are enclosed patios for cats – a space where they can enjoy the sights and smells of the great outdoors, and stay protected from busy roads and wild predators.

Window box or freestanding, DIY or custom design, catios are a growing trend in the US – popular not only for the safe enrichment they offer their feline residents but for the added protection they provide for birds and wildlife.

From Bothell to West Seattle, this year's tour features 11 catios of all shapes and sizes. Tour participants can choose to visit some or all of the locations, and along the way they'll have the   opportunity to talk to catio owners as well as meet the lucky felines who enjoy these safe outdoor spaces. The event is sponsored by PAWS, Catio Spaces and The Humane Society of the United States. There is a suggested donation of $10 to help support PAWS education programs, and all additional proceeds from the day will benefit animals in need at PAWS.

Melissa Moore, education manager at PAWS, says "We're thrilled to be back with this fun event. Catio Tour Seattle is not only about showcasing some of the best feline real estate Seattle has to offer. It's also about promoting something that is very close to our heart here at PAWS - a source of healthy outdoor enrichment for cats that ultimately keeps our wildlife safe too."

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® teacher-recognition program, hosting an April 29 luncheon at CenturyLink Field honoring the 16 Puget Sound-area teachers recognized for educational excellence during the 2015 NFL season.

Among the honorees was Shorewood High School’s Colleen Kiyonaga.

The Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program recognizes teachers in front of their students and peers at in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies.

Ms. Kiyonaga was presented with her Heroes award during a surprise classroom presentation last October. She was nominated by colleague Wendy Jordan, who wrote, “Colleen Kiyonaga fosters a classroom culture of respect and tolerance. She teaches what she loves—food and culture.
"By sharing her own Japanese-American heritage, she encourages students to explore and share their own cultures. The result is a collaborative teaching style that is empowering.”

Heroes honorees also receive tickets to a Seahawks home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field. Ms. Kiyonaga attended the Seahawks’ Oct. 18, 2015 match-up against the Carolina Panthers.

Also welcomed at the program’s milestone anniversary festivities at CenturyLink Field were past ‘MVP Award’ winners, including Shorewood’s Jill Owen and Paul Villanueva. Both Owen and Villanueva were honored in 2010 as Symetra Heroes; together, they went on to write a proposal for a “Sea 3D” program, which won a $10,000 MVP Award grant

(Every school with a Symetra Hero in the Classroom recipient in a given program year is eligible to submit an MVP Award proposal. Nominated programs are evaluated on a range of criteria, including innovation, feasibility and demonstrated need.)

The April 29 event was held in “the CLink’s” Verizon Lounge, which offered both a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the field and an unexpected peek at a Seattle Sounders practice session. The reception was followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, including a stop in the Seahawks locker room, where each teacher discovered a personalized locker. Inside were a copy of the Seattle Times ad honoring them, a commemorative 2015 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom booklet and Seahawks items.
