Shoreline students participate in International Career Development Conference

Friday, May 6, 2016

Shorecrest and Shorewood DECA students and advisors take a break
for a group photo on the steps of the Tennessee State Capital.

Fourteen Shorecrest and Shorewood DECA students were among over 17,000 students from around the world to participate in the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Nashville, TN on April 23-26.

Shorecrest's Elizabeth Holmdahl was a top 10 finalist
in Business Finance Marketing.

The conference featured the top DECA students from each state and international chapter. Facing off against the world’s best, the Shoreline students rose to the occasion and proved they were there for a reason.

In addition to strong showings from all of the Shoreline students who competed, Shorecrest's Elizabeth Holmdahl was recognized as a Top 10 Finalist in Business Finance Marketing and the Shorecrest School-Based Enterprise Team of Lauren Curti, Evietta Chapman and Micah Roberton placed in the Top 25 for their school store with a concentration on selling.

Shorecrest School-based Enterprise Team of Lauren Curti, Evietta Chapman and Micah Roberton placed in the top 25 for their school store.

It wasn’t all competitions and awards though; the students also attended learning sessions and heard presentations from some of the world’s top business leaders.

To qualify to attend the ICDC, the 14 Shoreline students first had to earn high placing at the state competition, which occurred in early March. Washington has the world’s 4th largest DECA chapter with over 12,000 students, so having advanced from the state competition to the ICDC is a major accomplishment, explained Shorecrest DECA Advisor Emily Wray. Both her and Shorewood DECA Advisor Damon Oliveto hope to continue that success and advance students to the ICDC again next year.

Lake Forest Park issues Transportation Benefit District 2015 annual report

From the City of Lake Forest Park

The 2015 Lake Forest Park Transportation Benefit District Annual Report is online and available for review. Read the TBD 2015 Annual Report.

In 2015, the Washington State Legislature amended existing laws regarding Transportation Benefit Districts (TBDs). One of the amendments authorizes a city to assume the rights, powers, functions, immunities, and obligations of a TBD; essentially dissolving the separate TBD entity and allowing the city to step into its shoes, thereby reducing the administrative burden and costs associated with the TBD. In the case of Lake Forest Park, the estimated $4,000 savings was repurposed to carry out the mission of the TBD.

In November 2015, the Lake Forest Park City Council took action to dissolve the separate TBD entity and authorize the City of Lake Forest Park to assume the TBD.

Dr. Guy Hamilton

After a competitive search, Dr. Guy Hamilton has been named Dean of Science, Math, and Engineering at Shoreline Community College. Hamilton has been the Acting Dean since 2015.

"I am genuinely excited to be the Dean of Science, Math, Engineering, Clean Technology, and Manufacturing," said Hamilton. "As a tenured faculty member for twelve years, I have always considered myself fortunate to work at Shoreline with a fantastic group of colleagues who supported my growth as an instructor. I look forward to supporting them as a Dean to ensure that our students have the best opportunity for success."

Hamilton, who joined Shoreline’s faculty in 2003, holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Oregon. 1,600 will run in Shoreline Saturday to help stop human trafficking

Free Them 5k will be run on Saturday from CRISTA

The starting horn will sound at 9:00am Saturday for World Concern’s Free Them 5k. Now in its 8th year, the community event has raised more than half a million dollars in its history and ensured the protection of tens of thousands of vulnerable children and women living in the world’s poorest places.

Participants raise funds and awareness about the problem of human trafficking — particularly the heinous crime of child trafficking — by running or walking the 5k route through Shoreline, starting at World Concern’s headquarters on the CRISTA Ministries campus.

It’s a tangible way for families and participants of all ages to help end the enslavement of more than 35 million people around the world.

Children, women, and men are often lured with promises of jobs or opportunities, only to be trapped into forced labor, prostitution, or modern-day slavery.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children and adults in poor communities throughout Southeast Asia by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the danger of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely. According to the U.S. State Department, prevention programs are key to combatting trafficking globally.

Donations to the Free Them 5k support World Concern’s anti-trafficking programs.

World Concern is a Christian global relief and development organization. Our areas of expertise include disaster response, clean water, education, food security, child protection, microfinance and health.

Shoreline students win big at ASME Pacific Northwest Engineering Student Design Conference

Thursday, May 5, 2016

Robots built and programmed by Shoreline Community College students placed 1st and 3rd in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Pacific Northwest Engineering Student Design Conference held at Tacoma Community College April 8-9, 2016. The conference included participants from both two- and four-year institutions across the Pacific Northwest.

This was Shoreline Community College’s first year entering the competition with a robotics project. The two student teams, made up of Yun-Chien Lin and Hsuan-Han Lai and Sheng-Kai Chen and Hucheng Guo, took third and first respectively in the mini-SumoBot competition. The students are members of Shoreline’s Engineering and Technology Society, and their entry into the competition was sponsored by the Associated Student Government and supported by faculty advisor Dr. Eric Basham.

“The results of this competition demonstrate that Shoreline Community College students can compete with both two- and four-year engineering student teams and win!” said Basham. “But aside from winning, participating in these competitions helps students to gain confidence in their skills as creative thinkers and innovators, network with their peers, and get noticed in the industry.”

A mini-SumoBot is a relatively small, self-propelled, electromechanical robotic device designed to compete in Sumo-style matches by forcing an opponent’s similar device out of a designated competition zone. Autonomous SumoBots, once placed in starting position and activated, operate under their own internal logic and programming, without any human guidance or control. SumoBots do not use any form of weapons. Points, penalties, and victories are determined in the style of classic Sumo.

Shoreline’s Engineering and Technology Society plans to compete against both college and professional teams again this fall, this time on a national level.

Shoreline homeowner shoots home invader

From King County Sheriff's Office

A Shoreline homeowner, home with his wife and two daughters, shot a man trying to break into his house. The suspect was hit in the leg by a single gunshot. He was taken to the hospital with possible life threatening injuries. The homeowner is not expected to be charged with any crime.

Just prior to 3am on Thursday May 5, 2016, Shoreline police responded to the 100 block of NE 174th after a 19 year old female called to report that someone was trying to break into her family’s house. The caller told dispatchers that she was at home with her 11 year old sister and both her parents and that they had locked themselves in a back bedroom of the house. She also told dispatchers that the father had armed himself with a gun.

She went on to say that prior to the family going to hide in the bedroom, they had seen and heard a man kicking at their doors and trying to break-in. She explained that the suspect was not wearing a shirt and was yelling profanities. After approximately three minutes on the line with 911, she reported hearing the sound of glass breaking at the front of the house.

At this point, the father / homeowner, armed with his 9mm handgun, left the bedroom where his wife and daughters were hiding and went to the front of the house where the sound of breaking glass had come from. As the homeowner came into the front living room area of the house, he encountered the suspect standing just outside the front window and door he had just broken out by throwing lawn furniture through. As the suspect began advancing toward him from just outside the broken door and windows, the homeowner fired two rounds at the suspect, hitting him one time in the upper right thigh.

Deputies were arriving on scene as this last encounter was occurring and heard the two shots. Once at the house, Deputies found the suspect in the front yard with a single gunshot wound to his thigh. Deputies were able to apply a tourniquet and stop or at least slow the bleeding, allowing Shoreline fire to arrive and provide further aid to the suspect before transporting him to Harborview.

At the time of this press release, the suspect was in surgery and is expected to survive.

The suspect is a 41 year old W/M that lives in the same neighborhood as this incident. Once released from Harborview, he will be booked into the King County Jail for investigation of Burglary.

The homeowner is not expected to be charged with any crimes.

Signal timing at 160th

Aurora Avenue at N 160th / College Way

When the story was published about N 160th being renamed as College Way, a reader had a question about the timing of the turn signal on Aurora at 160th.

The comment:

Shoreline, please check the signal operation of the left turn from 160th to northbound SR 99. It phases from green arrow, very briefly to yellow arrow, red for a couple seconds, then back to flashing yellow. Similar intersections simply change from green to flashing yellow. A lot of drivers simply drive through the short red phase.

Here's the response from the City traffic engineer whose responsibility is to time signals on Aurora:

The City of Shoreline operates the signals on Aurora from 152nd St to 205th St. As for how the flashing yellow left arrow works, it is supposed to sequence as follows:
  • 1. Solid red
  • 2. Solid green
  • 3. Solid yellow
  • 4. Solid red
  • 5. Flashing yellow
  • 6. Solid yellow
  • 7. Solid red
In fact, a solid yellow arrow being displayed after a solid green arrow is a requirement on how flashing yellow arrows operate in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the national standard for traffic devices and operations.

The traffic engineer is in the process of re-timing the signals along Aurora and said he will review the pedestrian activity and the eastbound left turning vehicles.

Two public meetings on Shoreline's financial sustainability

City to host two public meetings

Wednesday, May 18, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Richmond Beach Congregational Church
1512 NW 195th Street

Wednesday, May 25, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Shoreline Public Library
345 NE 175th Street

The Financial Sustainability Citizen Advisory Committee has been reviewing the City’s Financial Sustainability Strategies since February, particularly as they relate to the expiring maintenance and operations property tax levy lid lift that Shoreline residents passed in 2010. The upcoming public meetings are an opportunity for the community to learn about what the City has been doing to secure Shoreline’s financial sustainability and what challenges lie ahead.

As long as the 1% cap remains on property tax increases, the City will continue to face budget gaps every six to eight years as the cost to deliver the same basic services outpaces revenue growth.

In addition to looking at ways to operate more efficiently and to cut costs, the City has also looked at different strategies for ensuring revenue keeps pace with costs. Come learn about those strategies and provide your input.

Visit the Financial Sustainability Citizen Advisory Committee page to review meeting materials.

Friday Round Table - Life at Amazon

Friday Round Table, May 6, 1-2:30pm - Life at Amazon

Amazon Recruiter Ben Johnson is joining the Round Table this Friday (5/6) to talk about life at Amazon and how you can fit in.

Great positions for summer and part / full time opportunities are in abundance for moving throughout the company.

The workplace culture is “output oriented,” and if you demonstrate success and get work done at a high level, the hours get flexible, the workplace quality comparable (or even better) than any other online retail company.

But Ben can tell you much more about it all on Friday. Another one of those “if you want/ need a job, you can start working soon” type events! As always, great coffee, great snacks compliments of Central Market.

See you Friday, and as always – Good Luck Out There!

Friday, May 6, 1:00-2:30pm, Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Room 5116, Building 5000 (ground floor)
