Brief ceremony before Earth Day/ Arbor Day work party at Twin Ponds Park Sunday, April 24, 9:30am to Noon

For the fourth year in a row, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the City of Shoreline as a Tree City USA.

Shoreline achieved 2015 Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four standards: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of a least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

On Sunday, April 24, Ben Thompson, Urban Forestry Specialist from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, will present the City with its Tree City USA recognition at the beginning of an Earth Day/ Arbor Day work party at Twin Ponds Park.

The work party is from 9:30am to noon. Celebrate Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 29) by joining your neighbors and fellow native plant enthusiasts. Volunteers will be removing invasive species and replacing them with native plants. Nearby neighbors have donated evergreen saplings and the Shoreline Parks Department is providing sword ferns, Indian plums (osoberry), thimbleberries, and flowering currents.

The saplings will help replace the young conifers lost during the 2015 drought and the shrubs will do their part in creating a sustainable understory in this suburban forest. Trees clean the air that we breathe and benefit birds and other wildlife. Help honor both Earth Day and Arbor Day by encouraging and nurturing trees in Twin Ponds Park!

Volunteers will meet at the Meridian Avenue entrance (across the street from the Evergreen School). Dress appropriately; long sleeves and a hat recommended. Tools and gloves will be available, but you will be most comfortable with your own pair of gloves. Feel free to bring a trowel, fork, and/ or loppers if you have them. For more information, email.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. In honor of Shoreline Community College’s importance to the City of Shoreline, City Manager Debbie Tarry, with support of the mayor and city council, and in collaboration with SCC’s board of trustees, has named 160th St “College Way”.

Large, lighted signs have been installed at the intersection of 160th and Aurora. Along 160th, the smaller street signs on each corner now have ‘College Way” installed above the 160th street sign.

Dr. Cheryl Roberts, President of Shoreline Community College, stated “I am delighted to see the signs go up in honor of our college.
"We are truly ‘of’ the community not just ‘in’ the community. This has been over a year and a half in the making. I am thrilled Shoreline is recognized as a college town and that 160th street is now distinguished as ‘College Way’.
"The signs will greatly improve wayfinding for all who want to visit our beautiful campus and experience the outstanding teaching and learning that happens for our students and the communities we serve. This is perfect timing prior to the Seattle International Film festival coming in late May”.

Dr. Roberts also thanked the City of Shoreline for their continued support and collaboration. “We look forward to continuing the good work with the City of Shoreline on making improvements and enhancements to the areas surrounding our campus”.

Performance of Cowboy Poetry, Story and Song in Shoreline

Sharon Glenn and George Thomsen

Northwest Heritage Resources is pleased to present a performance of cowboy poetry, stories and songs in Shoreline on Friday, June 3, 2016. The event is in partnership with the Briarcrest Neighborhood Association of Shoreline, and is scheduled for 7:00pm at the Shorecrest High School library, 2nd floor, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

The performance will feature award winning cowboy poet, Sharon “Silver” Glenn of Yakima, her cowboy musician husband, George Thomsen, and rancher, farmer and cowboy poet Glenn Bair.

Sharon was born in the Ellensburg area, daughter of a cowboy father and a homesteader’s daughter, and grew up surrounded by horses and livestock. She and her husband George have lived the cowboy life for many years, working for local cattle and sheep outfits. George is a lifetime buckaroo and horse trainer. Together they perform as the musical duo, Northfork, singing traditional cowboy songs of the rural west, as well as songs of George’s own composition and Sharon’s poetry.

Glenn Bair grew up cattle ranching and farming in Ephrata, and like Sharon and George, his poetry and songs are true stories from the cowboy and ranching life he has lived. All three have performed at the well known Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, the Charley Russell Cowboy Gathering in Lewiston, Idaho, Cowboy Poets of Idaho in Emmett, the Columbia River Cowboy Gathering in Kennewick, Spirit of the West in Ellensburg, the Northwest Folklife Festival, and events throughout the Northwest.

A suggested donation of $5 per person over 18 can be made at the door. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended.  For reservations or more information email or call 206-306-1181.

The June 3rd event is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, 4Culture, and Northwest Heritage Resources.

Happiness Sprinkling Project is coming to Shoreline

Photo by Byron Dazey, Creative Flashes Photography

Shoreline is about to get Sprinkled with Happiness!

On Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 4pm to 5:30pm at 175th and Aurora Ave N, a group of smiling people wearing bright yellow shirts will be Sprinkling Happiness.

Created by Laura Lavigne, founder of the Anacortes Center for Happiness, The Happiness Sprinkling Project is “crazy simple and crazy powerful.”

A group of people get together, wearing bright yellow shirts. They gather at a busy spot in the town where they live. They hold up signs. Happiness signs. Signs that say things like, It's Going to be All Right and Breathe and You are Loved.
They do this for an hour or so and as they do, magic happens. People being ‘sprinkled’ on their way home from work are surprised, puzzled – and moved. They smile, they wave, and they honk. Many join in and start Sprinkling themselves.
The messages are surprising because “they ask nothing of the viewer” but instead send an expected burst of light, helping people tap into their own hope, strength and joy.

The Sprinklings started in May 2012 and have been spreading like well ... happiness, and have been received with a mix of surprise, delight and occasionally tears of emotion.

“This is the most amazing project I have ever been a part of.”
“The event was the happiest, most heart-centered day of my life thus far”
“24 hours later and I’m still smiling! Slept like that. My face may be stuck.”
“Happiness Sprinkling is more than an event…it’s a lifestyle.”
“I don’t know when I have had more fun…”

In the past three years, Happiness Ambassadors have popped up in Washington DC, in Chicago, California, Oregon, Seattle, Canada, Los Angeles, Florida, Indiana, Grand Cayman and Canada.

Shoreline organizer David Matthews in background

Together they are gradually building a “Happiness Sprinkling Tribe” whose vision is to expand into inner cities and eventually all over the world and have recently received requests from India, Italy, Germany and Ireland.

This growing movement is building a web of Happiness Ambassadors and Happiness Sprinklers and changing the world one gathering at a time. One of the powerful aspects of this event is that the sets of Signs get shipped from one Ambassador to the next, thus forming a global “Happiness chain letter,” adopting a very simple Pay It Forward concept.

The Happiness Sprinkling Project has been featured on the GoodNews Network, DailyGood.org, NBC, CBS News, The Huffington Post, Ellen DeGeneres’ blog, as well as the TEDx platform.

Anyone is invited join in and participate in this powerful and FUN event!

This Shoreline Happiness Sprinkling Ambassador is David Matthews and he can be reached at 206-272-0580

Shoreline firefighters do NOT solicit door to door

From Shoreline Fire

Shoreline Fire wants to assure the community that Shoreline firefighters are not going door-to-door offering home fire safety inspections or any type of safety checks inside private residences.

A company called RED Safety has been canvassing neighborhoods offering such services in Shoreline and other Puget Sound communities.

Shoreline Fire advises against doing business with door-to-door solicitors of any type.

No Shoreline firefighter will ever come to your door offering safety advice, inspections or to sell safety products such as smoke alarms or alarm systems. Shoreline Firefighters also never call to solicit donations or with business offers of any kind.

If you have questions about anyone who says they represent a Fire Department, follow this advice:
  1. Request a printed brochure or business card with the Company's contact information on it for follow-up BEFORE you agree to talk with them.
  2. Never allow a stranger to enter your home unless you have made an appointment with a reputable business that you are sure about.

If you have questions about Shoreline Fire, or fire safety in your home, please or email or call our Community Education Office at 206-533-6500 or contact us through our website.

Letter to the Editor: Response to Sen. Chase's legislative session comments

Letter to the Editor:

Dear Senator Chase,

The November ballot will have your bill calling for a vote, again, on a state income tax. Please keep in mind the states with only sales tax weathered the recent recession better than those on the income tax, and recovered quicker.

The local school boards won’t solve overcrowding if the state keeps increasing funds without responsibility for results. The teacher shortage won’t be solved if the “teachers” keep moving out of classrooms and into the admin buildings, last time I checked the student-teacher ratio was very low.

Using the term “Wall Street Party” is confusing. Bill Gates Jr prefers the Democratic Party… And the charter schools do not cater to the rich but to the unreachable students, usually the poor.

We do agree on one thing, the Public Works Trust Fund for clean water projects was self-sustaining from loan repayments before the legislature was forced by court order to “fully fund” schools and took all the money.

You also claim “…Poor working families pay about 25 percent of their personal income in taxes…” means someone with a $10,000 yearly income is paying $2500 in state taxes. Check your turbo tax sales tax deduction. And your idea “…Perhaps [the court] will declare all tax exemptions unconstitutional…” would remove the sales tax “exemption” for food, utilities, and rent. Let’s hope not.

Historically, states that switch to the income tax have quickly written all sorts of selective tax exemption rules. They promise to keep the sales tax low and reduce the state’s share of property taxes. But there is always another school “emergency” that can break those promises.

Please check my claims and reconsider your position on the income tax.

Margaret Wiggins

Seven Shoreline schools earn 2015 Washington Achievement Awards

State Superintendent Randy Dorn and State Board of Education Chair Isabel Muñoz-Colón announced today (April 18) that seven Shoreline schools are among the 258 Washington schools to earn 2015 Washington Achievement Awards. The award recipients represent the highest performing schools in the state based on three years of academic information as reported in the Washington Achievement Index.

“The Achievement Awards recognize schools and educators making a difference in student outcomes. Award recipients are schools that have made measurable progress helping students prepare for college, career and life,” said Isabel Muñoz-Colón, State Board of Education Chair. “The Achievement Awards are one way we can learn more about the successful strategies Washington schools are using to help our kids.”

Schools are recognized in seven categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, English Language Arts Growth, Math Growth, Extended Graduation Rate, English Language Acquisition and Achievement Gap.

Shoreline schools recognized as top performers in one or more of categories are:
  • Briarcrest Elementary (High Progress)
  • Brookside Elementary (English Language Arts Growth)
  • Cascade K-8 Community School (Overall Excellence and English Language Arts Growth)
  • Echo Lake Elementary (High Progress and English Language Acquisition)
  • Syre Elementary (Overall Excellence and English Language Arts Growth)
  • Meridian Park Elementary (High Progress)
  • Parkwood Elementary (High Progress)

“These awards are a reflection of the incredible work happening in Shoreline Schools to support the highest levels of success for every student who walks through our doors,” said Rebecca Miner, superintendent of Shoreline Public Schools.
“It takes an entire school community of committed and caring adults to ensure every student has the opportunity and resources to succeed. Every person plays a critical role in cultivating student achievement. I want to thank and recognize the schools honored with these prestigious awards, as well as all of our staff and volunteers who give their all for each student.”

The award-winning schools will be honored during a ceremony on May 10 at in Union Gap.

The Achievement Index is the only statewide school accountability system recognized by both the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education. The Achievement Index measures student proficiency in math, English language arts, science, student growth, and college and career readiness. Educators, families, and community members can use the Index to identify areas of strength and improvement in Washington’s schools.

Rep. Ruth Kagi appointed to Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission on Delivery of Services to Children and Families

Rep. Ruth Kagi D-32
On April 15, Rep. Ruth Kagi, (D-32) was appointed to the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Delivery of Services to Children and Families. Governor Inslee issued an executive order in February creating the Commission and calling on its members to make recommendations on creating a new agency dedicated to improving outcomes for the youngest Washingtonians.

“When programs for children are dispersed throughout numerous agencies, there is not enough focus on providing services that help children in the long term,” said Rep. Kagi. “Providing appropriate and robust services to children and families can do much more than solve immediate problems, it can reduce the need for assistance far into the future.”

Other states around the country have created similar agencies solely focused on children and families. Where these agencies are in place, data indicates an improvement in the services provided to children and the overall outcomes for young people.

“Starting from the ground floor gives us the opportunity to look at how services are currently provided and design an agency that will bring all of these services together to better serve children and families,” says Rep. Kagi. “I am honored to serve on this Commission and I look forward to continuing my advocacy on behalf of our next generation in this capacity.”

The Commission will make recommendations to the legislature on the mission and vision for the new agency. Recommendations will also include organizational structure, estimated costs for the reorganization, and benchmarks for measuring the effectiveness of the new agency.

The Commission starts meeting on May 10 and will continue meeting throughout the summer and fall. The Commission will make its recommendations to the legislature by November 1, 2016.

Shoreline School District to revamp websites and adopt mobile app

By Marianne Deal Stephens

Parents and community members will have noticed that the various Shoreline School District websites are not consistent in look or organization. That may change in the near future. At the April 11, 2016 School Board Meeting, District Information Officer Curtis Campbell presented a plan to revamp digital communications.

Mr. Campbell spearheaded the effort to solicit and evaluate vendor proposals for new District and school websites and a new mobile app. The project grew out of Shoreline School Board Priority #6 for 2015-2016, which pertains to District communications.

Source:  Curtis Campbell, Shoreline Schools Information Officer

The goal is to “align our online communications and features under one system,” according to Mr. Campbell. Currently, with a mix of systems, users must log in and out, and the look and features vary greatly. Present District and school sites do not work well on mobile devices.

Through a process involving several District department heads, principals, teachers, librarians, and a few parents, Blackboard was selected to provide the communications system.

End users will be able to ‘pin’ items on their home page according to their role and concerns, and parents will be able to set up their accounts so that the system aggregates content from the schools where you have kids. There should be a single sign on for Data Dashboard and Naviance so that users have a “seamless transition.”

Source: Curtis Campbell, Shoreline Schools Information Officer
The mobile app was particularly attractive to the group. The app will pull information from individual school sites, pertinent district information, and student information into one feed.

Emergency alerts will be integrated, and parents can choose to receive notifications when a student’s grade or a meal balance drops below a certain, customizable, point.

Sample screen shots of school district mobile app. Source: Blackboard District App

Mr. Campbell suggested that the app could “provide a catalyst for conversations at the dinner table.” Following this comment, there was an audible and possibly good-humored groan from high school students attending the meeting for their Senior Civics course.

Sample screen shots of school district mobile app. Source: Blackboard District App

The District will work with Blackboard to come up with a custom design, and the transition should occur by the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

The Board voted to approve the recommendation to award the contract to Blackboard and move ahead with the project.

Residents in the Echo Lake Neighborhood heard what seemed like an unusual number of emergency vehicles on Tuesday, April 12 around 10:30pm but they really became concerned when they could smell smoke six blocks away.

No April elections here

By Evan Smith

April 26 will be Election Day for many cities, school districts and other government entities around Washington, but not in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park.

That’s because no entity in the area had anything to put on the ballot.

The King County elections office has mailed ballots for propositions in one city, four school districts and five special-purpose districts around the county.

Elections officials will mail ballots May 5 for the May 24 presidential primary to voters registered by April 25.

Evan Smith can be reached at schsmith@frontier.com.

Merit awards given to Shoreline firefighters and staff

Shoreline Fire Chief Matt Cowan recently presented merit awards to Department employees for "going above and beyond" during their daily responses and responsibilities.

The awards were announced at the Department's annual banquet, held at the Elks Hall in North City.

Awards given were:
  • Firefighter of the Year -- Firefighter Andrew Leith
  • Paramedic of the Year -- Firefighter/Paramedic Lee Bovee
  • Officer of the Year -- Battalion Chief Rod Bush
  • Administrator of the Year -- Katie Doll
  • 2015 Chief's Company of Emergency Medical Services -- Firefighter / Paramedics Rob Livingston and Strojan Kennison
  • 2015 Chief's Company of Suppression -- Lt. Jake Yake, Firefighters Rob Heib, Karl Drechsler, Ruslan Cherkasskikh

The Chief awarded Chief's Coins to employees Rod Bush, Michelle Pidduck and Karl Drechsler.

In a tradition originating from World War I, the Shoreline Fire Department has designed and commissioned the striking of challenge coins.

These challenge coins, while small in stature, are a significant symbol of pride. It is a token that reflects pride in not only being a Firefighter, but a Firefighter in the Shoreline Fire Department.

It is a reminder of what we do, who we are, and that we are part of a larger, extended family. We have standard challenge coins, but we also have a special challenge coin called the “Chief’s coin.”

The Chief’s coin is not given out automatically to members, but rather it is a coin that is earned. It can be earned through many different manners such as, but not limited to, taking on extra responsibilities, extraordinary events, exemplary performance, and commendable professionalism or representation of our organization.

BC Rod Bush

On December 7, 2014, Rod went above and beyond in helping out his fellow man. On this day, Rod and his wife were arriving at a Christmas party when Rod noticed smoke coming from a nearby residence. After telling his wife to call 911, he ran to the home to ensure that the occupants had gotten out safely. As he ran, Rod heard glass breaking and found a man lying near the door to the home with his leg on fire and spreading up his body. Rod put the fire out and dragged the man away from the fire to a safer location to administer aid. He confirmed that all the occupants were out of the home, and then stayed with the man until the fire department arrived. The man sustained severe burns to his left leg, abdomen, and airway, with a decreased level of consciousness. Rod’s quick actions that day helped minimize the occupant’s injuries and potentially saved his life. Even off duty Rod represented the Shoreline Fire Department well with professional help in a time of need.

Firefighter Michelle Pidduck

In the performance of her job, Michelle came to know a family that was facing a tragic situation. A local family had an eight year old daughter that was terminally ill with leukemia. Zaraiyah "Z" Broddy had been battling the disease for two years when Michelle invited Z and her family to Station 64 for dinner and a ride in the fire engine. Sadly, a few weeks later Z passed away.

Michelle is also passionate about being involved in extra-curricular activities such as recently coordinating the Columbia Stairclimb, which she has done for many years. She brings her passion to improving community outreach and motivates personnel for improving their fitness with an annual fitness challenge. Michelle went above and beyond her duties in bringing a little joy to a family in need, developing a greater bond with our community, and professionally representing our Department.

Firefighter Karl Drechsler

On February 4, 2016, Karl went above and beyond his duties in providing exceptional customer service. On that morning there were back to back structure fires, the second of which was in a small apartment building just off of Aurora. The fire, while extinguished quickly, displaced residents of the unit that was on fire. After the fire was out and equipment had been picked up, Karl was instructed to drive the displaced residents to a nearby location where they could stay. Noticing that one of the residents had nothing but wet clothes and socks, Karl decided to stop by his station for dry clothes. He went to station 64 and gave the resident a pair of his own sweats and shoes. Karl brings a passion that is palpable and acts like he has won the lottery every time he comes to work. He literally would give the shoes off of his feet for this community.
