Helping Boys Thrive® Summit

The Washington Association for Middle Level Education is proud to host the Helping Boys Thrive® Summit with Michael Gurian from The Gurian Institute at Shoreline Community College on Saturday, April 23 from 8:00 to 4:00pm.

This summit is a one day event that brings together professionals, parents, educators, and community stakeholders in the field of boys’ development.

In nearly every academic and behavioral marker, boys and young men are struggling. While some males get to the top of corporations and government quite well, millions of males are not thriving. In our own community, we have a great need to study and positively affect the developmental journey of our boys. We are seeing more and more boys who need our help, and want us to engage with them in successful ways.

The organizers of this summit are focusing the program on boys, but they believe this work is not just about boys — it is also about girls. They believe we are now in an era in which girls’ and women’s rights will not move to their next level of social success until we solve the issues boys face.

Michael Gurian, the father of two daughters, recently noted, “Our genders are utterly interdependent and the disturbing loss of our males is beginning to significantly harm our females as well.”

This summit is for parents, teachers, counselors, therapists, medical professionals, grandparents, law enforcement and corrections workers, youth service providers, early childhood providers, mentors, ministers and other faith professionals, and policy makers.

Some breakout sessions are targeted toward professionals and some to parents. All sessions provide evidence-based practical strategies that can be used tomorrow in homes, offices, schools, and other environments.

City of Shoreline celebrates volunteers

City staff recognize volunteers

Text and photos by Marc Weinberg

On Thursday evening the City of Shoreline hosted an early evening celebration to acknowledge the volunteers that help make Shoreline a vibrant community. Some of the volunteer groups present were:
  • Shoreline ACS Ham Radio Emergency Communications  Team
  • Shoreline Council of Neighborhoods
  • Shoreline Community Emergency Response Teams
  • Shoreline Parks Volunteers
Volunteers contributed more than 9,000 hours in 2015 to city projects and activities.

The buffet table was popular

The event included snacks and beverages as well as the sounds of Peter Ali "Native American flutist"... music from the spirit and the heart.

Entertainment by Peter Ali

All this was followed by some quick team building puzzle activities and a raffle of door prizes from local merchants.

Shoreline celebrates its volunteer community like this once a year. To find out where you can contribute go to the City's website.

Poem Photo: The Wetland

The Wetland

The color of the soul is twilight
in a wetland thousands of years old
where natural springs percolate
the nectar of life,
and the flour of glacial meltwater
sifts into the marsh bisque.
It has been a long journey
from the headwaters
in the Milky Way.

Cascade K-8 TSA qualifies for national competition

Photo courtesy of Chrisy Francescutti, Cascade K-8 Director

The Cascade K-8 Technology Student Association (TSA) brought home some prestigious awards at the Washington State TSA Conference in SeaTac on April 1. They had teams place 4th for Video Game Design and 1st for Children's Stories.

The video game design team impressed the judges with their design for a platform game called “Mr. Tux.” The students programmed the game, electronically wrote the music, and designed the graphics for the game.

The children’s stories team placed 1st for Snowball and the Iceberg, a story about Adelie penguins in Antarctica. The technology component for that category focused on the students’ ability to research their story’s topic and present it using graphic design.

The Cascade K-8 TSA will now compete in the National Technology Student Association Conference in Nashville, TN on June 28 - July 2, 2016.

Washington State Patrol hosts Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Career Camp

Washington State high school juniors and seniors with an interest in law enforcement as a career will have an opportunity to spend a week this summer learning about the roles and job opportunities within law enforcement.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 39th Annual Washington State - Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Camp to be held at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton from July 10 through July 16, 2016. Applications can be downloaded from the State Patrol’s Home Page, under “Outreach.” The application deadline is May 6, 2016.

The purpose of the camp is to provide selected high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore various job opportunities in the law enforcement field. Students are given a hands-on experience on the WSP drive-course and tactical firing range and will get to work with forensics, SWAT, communications, K-9 and many other police functions. Additionally, students will have exposure to law enforcement problems and challenges officers encounter on a daily basis and to show how to successfully handle situations in a professional manner.

Police departments from around the state provide officers as staff members to instruct and serve as counselors. Guest speakers from various agencies provide first-hand information to the students. This gives the students a variety of experiences and exposure to federal, state, county and local law enforcement as a possible career path. Many students who attend this week-long camp go on to have careers in the criminal justice field.

This camp is sponsored and paid for by Washington Kiwanis clubs statewide in addition to corporate and private sponsors.

Cross-Pollinations exhibition at Shoreline City Hall explores artists working in collaboration

Vanishing Ice II, Lin McJunkin + Milo White, 2015; courtesy of the artists.

In today’s changing art world, collaboration has emerged as a primary means of artistic production in the last 30 years. Indeed, the upcoming exhibition Cross-Pollinations is itself a collaboration between the City of Shoreline Public Art Program and the Shoreline Lake-Forest Park Arts Council.

According to Charles Green, author of The Third Hand: Collaboration in Art from Conceptualism to Postmodernism (U of Minnesota 2001), “The conventional idea of the lonely artist passively waiting for inspiration’s light bulb to be turned on” is no longer relevant to contemporary artistic practice.

Six artist teams and two individual artists whose process involves collaborative strategies will present a variety of media, including installation art, works on paper, glass, steel, photography, book arts, and sculpture.

Artists from Shoreline and the Puget Sound region include: Chaim Bezalel and Yonnah Ben Levy; Susan Gans and David Traylor; Meghan Lancaster; Anna Macrae and Flora Ramirez Bustamente; Lin McJunkin, Milo White, Anne McDuffie, and Ann Vandervelde; Opsins (Cindy Michelle Collins and Monica Lisette-Sanchez); The Portrait Collective (K.J. Bateman, Peggy Murphy, Cynthia Yatchman); Cynthia Yatchman.

The exhibition opens at 4:00pm on Saturday, April 23, 2016, with a panel presentation on artistic collaboration from 4:30 – 5:15pm.

Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm through Friday, June 24, 2016.

Seattle City Light to replace power transformer at Shoreline Substation

Shoreline electrical substation

Beginning in early May, Seattle City Light plans to increase system reliability by replacing an old power transformer with a new one at the Shoreline Substation, which is located at N 163rd and Meridian. Customers nearby are being notified of the work.

  • The work will be similar to the first new transformer installation that took place at the substation in 2014.
  • Construction will begin with jackhammering in the center of the substation yard during daylight hours in order to prepare the site for building the new electrical equipment.
  • From approximately mid-August, crews will begin the assembly of the new transformer on its pad.
  • Once assembly is complete, a truck-mounted mobile generator and oil processing tanker will be used to process the new transformer’s oil.

If customers have questions they can contact Patty Breidenbach, Electrical Service Representative,  or 206-684-4795. The upcoming construction work at Shoreline Substation is one of the many investments in infrastructure City Light carries out in order to maintain and improve electrical reliability in its service area.

Earth Week events at SCC - Dying Oceans - Biofuels and Climate Change

EARTH WEEK at Shoreline Community College

Dying Oceans, Tuesday, April 19, 11:30am-12:20pm, Room 9202

Biofuels and Climate Change, April 21, 7:00-8:30pm, Room 9208

The Global Affairs Center at Shoreline Community College  will present two great events as part of the college's celebration of Earth Week, which will be FREE to the public.

The first is on Tuesday, April 19, from 11:30am to 12:30pm,  a discussion on Ocean Acidification, featuring a panel with Meg Chadsey, Ocean Acidification specialist, Paul Williams, a Shellfish management policy advisor with Suquamish Tribe, and Dina Kovarik, Biology Faculty and Chair of the Biotechnology Lab Specialist Program of Shoreline Community College to help moderate the discussion.

Ocean Acidification is the decrease of the pH in the ocean caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which dissolves into oceans, rivers and lakes. Some of this carbon dioxide reacts with the water to form carbonic acid, thereby increasing ocean acidity.
Increasing acidity is thought to have a range of possibly harmful consequences, such as depressing metabolic rates and immune responses in some organisms, and causing coral bleaching, and contributing to global warming.

The second program is Thursday, April 21st, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm., Biofuel and Climate Change.

We will be joined by our panelists Evan Henrich, Bioinformatics Intern with Matrix Genetics, Brian Young with Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness, and Chip Dodd, Geography and International Studies of Shoreline Community College to help moderate the discussion.

Can biofuels, fuels derived from recently alive plant materials (or manure), serve as the fuel of choice to power our nation's huge fleet of automobiles and trucks and power plants without adding to our climate change woes? In principle the answer should be yes.
Because the carbon in plants is produced from taking carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis, burning those plant-derived fuels simply puts the same amount of CO2 back in the atmosphere -- sort of like no harm, no foul. . . . But being a winner in principle and being a winner in practice are two different things.
--Bill Chameides, Huffington Post, November 18, 2013

Join us for a discussion of the science and economics of biofuels and what it might mean for addressing the challenge of climate change.

There is a small fee for parking on campus during the day. Parking is FREE during the evening.

Photos: Tulips from the Skagit Valley

Tulips

Reader Vicki Michels shared this story about Skagit Valley tulips:

When I was in Amsterdam years ago, I bought some tulips to send back for planting. I asked the man how well they might grow where I live. Of course he asked where that was. I figured they might be more familiar with the tulip growers than the towns, so I said "Skagit Valley".  He just waved a hand, laughed, and took my order. They arrived, planted well, etc.

It was only years later that I discovered that Kuchenoff, the tulip park I was visiting, actually imports their bulbs from Skagit Valley!

No wonder he laughed.

46th Legislative District Caucus this Sunday

By Phillippa Kassover, Vice-Chair
46th District Democrats

Lake Forest Park Democrats elected as delegates and alternates at the April 26th Precinct Caucuses will join their colleagues from Kenmore and North Seattle at the 46th Legislative District Caucus on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline. Registration begins at 11:30am and the meeting will be called to order at 1pm.

The purpose of the Caucus is to elect delegates to attend the Congressional District Caucuses and the State Party Convention and to adopt a platform for the 46th District Democrats.

During the LD Caucus, the assembled delegates and alternates will split into sub-caucuses for the two candidates for presidential nominee, Senator Sanders and Secretary Clinton. Each sub-caucus will elect delegates to the Congressional District Caucus and the State Convention.

If Delegates fail to register, Alternates from their precinct who have the same presidential preference will be seated in their stead. Alternates will also have the opportunity to fill in for other precincts where both the Delegate and Alternate are absent.

Members of the 46th District Democrats who are not delegates or alternates are encouraged to attend. They cannot vote during the delegate selection process, but are eligible to vote during the adoption of the platform.

The meeting will likely take a few hours as we work through the election of delegates and adopt a platform. Light snacks and drinks will be available, however we encourage attendees to bring their own food.

Congressional District Caucuses
The 46th Legislative District includes parts of two Congressional Districts, the 7th CD and the 1st CD. Delegates from Kenmore will be elected to the 1st CD, and delegates from LFP and north Seattle will be elected to the 7th CD.

The Congressional District caucuses will be held on Saturday, May 21st. Locations will be announced soon.

The Washington State congressional district caucuses will elect 67 delegates to the National Convention. Each congressional district caucus will also elect one presidential elector and one alternate.

State Convention
Delegates and alternates elected at the legislative district caucuses also serve as delegates and alternates to State Convention, which will be held from Friday, June 17th through Sunday, June 19th in Tacoma.

The State Convention will elect presidential electors, adopt a state party platform, and address resolutions. In addition, those members of the Washington State Democratic Central Committee who represent Legislative Districts will meet on Sunday, June 19th to elect 12 Pledged Party Leaders and Elected Official delegates (PLEOs), 22 at-large delegates and 7 alternates to the National Convention.

National Convention
Delegates and alternates elected at the congressional district caucuses and the State Convention will attend the 2016 National Convention, which will be held from July 25th to July 28th in Philadelphia, PA. The National Convention will nominate the Democratic candidates for President and Vice-President, and adopt a platform.

Light rail to Snohomish County takes another step forward with final design contract

Lynnwood Link
Light rail service to Snohomish County takes a big step forward as Sound Transit moves ahead with a final design contract for the 8.5 mile rail extension.

Sound Transit issued a formal notice to proceed on the $73.7 million final design contract with the HNTB Jacobs Trusted Design Partners joint venture.

A trip from Lynnwood to downtown Seattle will take 28 minutes and the extension is expected to carry up to 74,000 riders each weekday by 2035.

This step follows news in February that the project received approval from the Federal Transit Administration to move into final engineering work and is in line for up to a $1.2 billion grant through the FTA New Starts program.

Cost estimates for the Lynnwood Link extension range from $1.5 to $1.7 billion. Also included in Sound Transit's request for federal funding are other elements needed to support the extension, including 34 new light rail vehicles and a portion of a new light rail maintenance facility, bringing the total project cost to approximately $2.3 billion. A final budget will be established in 2017 with construction scheduled to begin in 2018 and open for service in 2023.

The line will extend north from the Northgate Link extension that is currently under construction, through Shoreline to Lynnwood, and is scheduled to open in 2021.

Last year the Sound Transit Board selected the final alignment and station locations for Lynnwood Link. Trains will run along the I-5 corridor from Northgate to Lynnwood with four new stations at Northeast 145th Street, Northeast 185th Street, the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center at 236th Street Southwest and at the Lynnwood Transit Center.
New parking structures at 145th, 185th, and Lynnwood Transit Center will add approximately 1500 park and ride spaces within the I-5 corridor as part of the project.

More information on the project

Last year the Board also directed staff to plan for potential future stations at Northeast 130th Street in Seattle and 220th Street Southwest in Mountlake Terrace. The light rail tracks in those areas will be built to accommodate construction of future boarding platforms in a way that would not severely impact service.

Lynnwood Link is the northernmost of the more than 30 miles of Sound Transit 2 light rail extensions approved by voters in 2008. By 2023, Sound Transit is also scheduled to open an eastward extension to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond's Overlake area, and a southward extension to the Kent/DesMoines area. By 2030, Link is expected to carry more than 280,000 riders each weekday.

This June the Sound Transit Board is expected to adopt a package of potential transit expansion projects to put before voters in November. The current Sound Transit 3 draft expansion package includes a light rail extension from Lynnwood to Everett. More details on the ST3 draft package and how to comment are here.

Children's Mental Health bill signed into law

Rep. Ruth Kagi D-32
During the last legislative session, Governor Inslee signed House Bill 2439 to address the delivery of mental health services to children and youth that passed the legislature with strong bi-partisan support.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ruth Kagi (D-32), establishes a Children’s Mental Health Work Group and funds a pilot program for delivering mental health services to children and families in rural areas.

Research shows that more than half of adult mental health problems begin before the age of 14. Children who get early intervention services are less likely to drop out of school or experience serious problems with drugs, alcohol, and mental illness as adults.

“While much of our focus in the legislature has been on addressing the significant problems in the adult mental health system, we must also address the needs of children with behavioral health challenges to reduce future demand for treatment,” said Rep. Kagi. “Too many children and their families are unable to get help when problems first appear.”

The Work Group will identify barriers to accessing mental health services for children and families and recommend to the legislature changes that can increase access to statewide mental health services for children.

Some of the specific ideas that the workgroup will tackle include:
  • Resolving confusion and gaps in insurance coverage
  • Increasing the number of professionals who are specifically qualified to provide children’s mental health services
  • Analyzing the supports provided for child care providers in order to reduce expulsions from child care and preschool which currently are three times higher than the rate in K-12.

In addition, HB 2439 will implement suicide prevention training for support staff in schools.

“All children deserve a strong developmental foundation. For some children this will require extra support and services,” said Kagi. “I am looking forward to working with stakeholders to find ways we can better serve children with behavioral health challenges and better support their families, teachers and caregivers."
