State Highway Corridor planning funding enabled for LFP

From the City of Lake Forest Park

On Tuesday, April 5, 2016, the cities of Lake Forest Park and Kenmore held a meeting with 46th District legislators Senator David Frockt and Representatives Jessyn Farrell and Gerry Pollett to thank them for their work in Olympia.

Among their successes in the session, the legislators introduced an amendment to the State Transportation Budget that will repurpose the long-time allocation for a surface park and ride lot lease in Lake Forest Park to allow those monies to instead fund state highway corridor planning in the City.

After trying for six years to fulfill the short-term promise of a surface lot to improve access to the transit corridors, City leaders determined that the money, originally a $500,000 mitigation grant for SR 520 toll avoidance, was better spent planning all aspects of access related to the two state routes that divide our city.

The planning effort is timely, considering the hope for significant SR 522 improvements in the Sound Transit 3 (ST3) plan that is now out for public comment.

City leaders realize the value of the ST3 investments and, at the same time understand that SR 522 must be a better and less divisive neighbor through future local improvements.

“We have only one chance at an investment of this magnitude,” said Mayor Jeff Johnson, “and we need to work with our citizens to create the best possible plan.”

Watch the City webpage for future news on this planning process, which is expected to take up to two years.

Help the Mark F. and Tiffany T. McVeety Student Fund 1 reach its goal

Mark McVeety
Mark McVeety was an SCC faculty member and liaison to the City of Shoreline and former President of the Shoreline Community College Foundation. He ran the Quick-Start Shoreline business seminars and was a frequent contributor to this publication.

Mark passed away this past December from melanoma.

Mark and his wife Tiffany established The Mark F. and Tiffany T. McVeety Student Fund 1 for the purpose of assisting returning students who have had to drop out of school because of a serious illness.

This fund will make it possible for the student(s) to return to Shoreline Community College when they are able without the worry of tuition, books and parking expenses.

The fund is now up to $23,739, just $1,261 short of the $25,000 goal for the fund to become an endowment and provide assistance to students in perpetuity.

You can make your donation to the McVeety Student Fund with a credit card over the phone to the Foundation office at 206-533-6783 or write a check to the Shoreline Community College Foundation and put “McVeety Student Fund” in the memo of the check.

Make a difference in the life of a student experiencing health issues and make a donation in the memory of Mark McVeety to the Mark F. and Tiffany T McVeety Student Fund 1. You will be helping their dream of making this an endowment come true.

The Foundation is located in the Admin Building and the address is: 16101 Greenwood Avenue North, Room #1005, Shoreline, WA 98133 (campus maps). Your gift is 100% tax deductible. The Foundation’s non-profit tax ID # is: 91-1265475.

Photos: Roozen Gaarde

Monday, April 11, 2016

What's not to love about fields of tulips? Wayne Pridemore took a day trip to the Skagit Valley and sent in these beautiful photos.

The Roozen Gaarde, located just outside Mount Vernon, is one of the most popular stops to view the tulips - in full bloom right now. The family owned operation farms nearly 1000 acres.

I just found out that the Dutch families who came over to farm their flowers here are also responsible for the daffodils, and indirectly the bevies of daffodil princesses.

And when people order Dutch tulip bulbs, they are getting bulbs grown in the Skagit Valley.

RainWise gardening presentation Thursday in north Seattle

Join the Broadview Garden Club on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm for an interesting and timely talk on RainWise gardening. Our speakers are: Susan Harper and James Bristow. This presentation is free and open to the public.

Remember last summer’s drought? Don’t let our rainy winter lull you into thinking there is no water shortage. As our region grows, the pressure increases on our precious water supply. Working to keep our water clean is something we each can do in our own backyards.

Susan Harper is a Planning and Public Engagement Specialist for Seattle Public Utilities. Her talk will center around the RainWise program which works to take rain water out of our sewer systems, using rain gardens and above-ground cisterns to protect water quality and make our neighborhoods greener. She will share other ideas of what you can do around home, work and your community to reduce polluted runoff and make Seattle a great place to live.

James Bristow is a contractor who often partners with SPU, installing above-ground cisterns as a certified RainWise installer. In his neighborhood of Ballard, he has created a system for his own home that demonstrates changes both large and small that can save water and protect our streams and lakes.

He will discuss SPU's RainWise program that encourages residents to build their own rain gardens and install cisterns, diverting the amount of overflow that otherwise goes directly into sewers and Puget Sound.

The meeting will be at the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church at 13047 Greenwood Ave N.

Benefits of the Rain Wise program:
  • Slow the flow of storm water and let the rain soak in.
  • Learn what you can do to help slow the flow.
  • Keep it clean and prevent pollution at its source.
  • Find out what you can do to be part of the solution.
  • Replant and restore native trees, plants and in-water habitat. Learn how to help replant our urban creeks and forests.

Friday Roundtable: The Interview - Dressing for Success and the Most Important Interview Question of All

Many thanks to Ann Conklin, whose story of success in her pet walking / sitting business was quite inspirational. It took a little failure and a lot of perseverance, but she’s now on track to solidifying her dream of being her own boss and making the money she needs to keep going. Congrats, and thanks, Ann!

This Friday’s Roundtable: The Interview: Dressing for Success and the Most Important Interview Question of All. Friday, April 15, 1-2:30pm.

All job interview questions ultimately boil down to this one: “Why should we hire you?” For some, this is a tough question to answer. You don’t want to come across as bragging or conceited, yet you need to explain why they should hire you over the other presumably qualified candidates.

You can answer this in a positive way that sets you apart and tells them why they need you. We’ll also touch on “Dressing for Success,” with some info that might be surprising. I wanted to include this topic last week, but time did not allow.

Please come share your ideas and experiences with these topics! All this with the usual great coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market. Hope to see you!

And ask always – Good Luck Out There!

LFP Police say please call 911

From Chief Steve Sutton

Over the past week, I have received voicemails and emails from citizens wanting to report a police matter.

I really do enjoy engaging with our community, however we really need everyone to call 911 if you observe something suspicious.

I know it goes against what we learned as children, “Only call 911 in an emergency”, but 911 is the best way to report criminal activity.  Please don’t hesitate to call 911. An officer will contact you and take the report.

Shorewood graduate Blake Snell in the news

Shorewood baseball standout Blake Snell's career got a boost from his father's tough talk over dinner at Spiro's, according to this article from the Tampa Bay Times.

Blake Snell had been back to his Seattle area home for a week or two, feeling pretty good about himself after a 2014 season in which he finally reached advanced Class A during his fourth pro season and was named the Rays' top minor-league pitcher.
He headed out with his dad and older brother, Dru, to grab some food at Spiro's Pizza and Pasta, one of their favorite local spots in Shoreline.
But there was more than just dinner served that night.

Independent Bookstore Day is a country-wide celebration of books and independent bookstores on April 30. From Poulsbo to Lake Forest Park, book lovers will mark their calendars for this special day of literary parties.

Last year, 350 individuals participated in some way: by attending a reading, the closing party, or visiting at least one area bookstore.

Of those, 42 accepted the Independent Bookstore Day Challenge of visiting all 17 participating stores and were awarded 25% off at all participating bookstores for an entire year. It is a big commitment the 42 champions did not take lightly.
We expect an even larger turnout this year and, with many of the same stores participating, a whole new enthusiasm for the challenge.

At Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park there will be treats provided by the Honey Bear bakery to the first 50 customers, free drip coffee all day at the Honey Bear Bakery, prize wheel all day with purchase, cake, scavenger hunt.

Here’s how you can be an Indie Bookstore Champion:
  1. Pick up a bookstore passport at any of the participating stores on April 30th.
  2. Visit ALL participating stores (get a stamp at any one store that has multiple locations) on April 30 and get their unique stamp on your passport.
  3. Turn your passport in at the last store of the day to be crowned an INDIE BOOKSTORE CHAMP and WIN 25% OFF ALL YEAR AT ALL PARTICIPATING BOOKSTORES*

Can’t make it to all bookstores? Visit three or more and be entered to win gift cards, first edition books, and more! Grand prize is $425 in gift certificates ($25 gift certificate to each of the 17 participating stores)!Winners will be notified by email.

*Some restrictions apply. See each participating store for details.
*One gift certificate for stores with multiple locations.

Participating Bookstores: Ada’s Technical Books, Book Larder, Eagle Harbor Books, Edmonds Bookshop, Elliott Bay Book Co., Fantagraphics Books, Island Books, Magnolia’s Bookstore, Mockingbird Books, Open Books, Phinney Books, Queen Anne Books, Seattle Mystery Bookstore, Secret Garden Books, and all locations of Liberty Bay Books, Third Place Books, and the University Book Store.

All participating stores will be throwing parties on April 30 celebrating their thriving businesses, local authors, and loyal customers. Some of the great happenings throughout the Puget Sound are: author signings, raffles, scavenger hunts, art prints, prize wheels, kids tables, book giveaways, discounts and sales, workshops, story times, photo booth, dog costume contest, and many more!

Each store will be selling Seattle Independent Bookstore Day products commissioned from local artisans. Also available will be items representing the national Independent Bookstore Day. You will only be able to find these exclusive items at an independent bookstore on April 30th and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Take the SR 522 / 523 survey

From the City of Lake Forest Park

Since last summer, Lake Forest Park has been part of a coalition of cities working to assure that, as light rail comes to Shoreline and Lynnwood in the next few years, it is fully accessible to regional transit users.

The residents of Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Shoreline, and Bothell commented in large numbers on the draft Sound Transit 3 (ST3) candidate projects and became part of a group called "522 Transit Now," urging Sound Transit to not bypass our cities in the ST3 plan.

That effort, and the transit logic behind it, have resulted in Sound Transit revealing an ST3 plan that includes an outstanding list of improvements in the SR 522/523 corridor that will give our community unprecedented access to the transit system. Among them are:

  • Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in the corridor from Woodinville to Shoreline;
  • Three 300-car parking garages in the corridor, including one in Lake Forest Park;
  • Two BRT stations in Lake Forest Park;
  • Sidewalks on both sides of SR 522 in LFP to allow easy access to and from the stations;
  • Completion of the unfinished segments of Business and Transit [BAT] lanes;
  • Plans to construct these improvements by 2024, as light rail is ramped up along the north I-5 Corridor.

The plan is now out for public review and comment. The public comment period ends April 29, 2016. Click on “ST3 Website and Survey,” below, to access the plan and projects. While you are there, we once again ask you to click on “Take the Survey,” this time to support the effort of our communities and the improved ST3 plan. If you agree it is a good plan for us, some things you might include in your comments:
  • Thank Sound Transit for listening and including the SR 522/523 corridor in the final plan;
  • BRT opens up the promise of light rail access to the north Lake Washington communities;
  • The parking garages are extremely important elements of access by our community to this transit corridor;
  • The sidewalks will, for the first time, open up safe access to this transit corridor for our citizens;
  • The early construction schedule is a win/win for the communities and Sound Transit, as it coincides with the opening of the North LINK light rail stations.

We have come a long way in a year.

Shorecrest band fundraiser fills the van

Photo by Jerry Pickard

Saturday, April 9, Shorecrest Band, in cooperation with Goodwill Industries, held a recycling fundraiser in the Shorecrest student parking lot.

Goodwill delivered two trailers and an assortment of storage bins to the south lot and student band members manned the trailers from 10am until 2pm collecting used but in good condition furniture, appliances, clothing and electronics.

Photo by Jerry Pickard

By 12:30pm students had a good sized collection of assorted furniture and electronics ready for loading into the trailers.

Band director Vince Caruso reports that the event was successful - they filled the van and more.

"I'm sure we will continue to host these events next year as well - usually one in the fall and one in the spring."

Goodwill pays up to $500 for a full 24 foot box truck. This money will help the Shorecrest Band go to the parade in Victoria – and the donations help Goodwill provide free education to over 8500 people in Western Washington.

Shoreline conducting polling related to renewal of 2010 Maintenance and Operations levy

A Shoreline poll is underway now. Calls started on Monday, April 4 and will be completed by Sunday, April 17.

EMC is calling a random sample of Shoreline residents to ask their views on the levy and other issues related to the City’s financial sustainability.

The City engaged EMC Research to conduct polling related to renewal of the City’s six-year maintenance and operations levy for basic public safety, parks, recreation, and community services. EMC is a research firm and is not a marketing or advertising firm.

The City has conducted similar polling in the past. It did so in 2010 when the Council was considering placing the initial levy on the ballot and again in 2012 when Council was considering placing acquisition of the SPU water system on the ballot.

If you have any questions, contact Communications Program Manager Eric Bratton 206-801-2217.

Trauma survivor gives back by working with sexual trafficking survivors in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Back in Shoreline, Amber poses in front of the
James Alan Salon where she works
Photo by Steven H. Robinson

By Gabrielle Yetter

When Amber LeMaster was hired as a stylist by Shoreline’s James Alan Salon and Spa in 2011, she felt there was something bigger in store for her.

Less than three years later, she was on a flight to Cambodia where she spent six weeks volunteering with survivors of abuse at the Kate Korpi Salon and Training Academy in Phnom Penh.

Amber with Matthew Fairfax at the
Kate Korpi Salon in Phnom Penh

The Cambodian salon is the brainchild of Matthew Fairfax, owner of James Alan, who created the Justice and Soul Foundation that provides training, expertise, and restoration to young women and men rescued from sex trafficking and abusive situations. It opened in 2014 and Amber was one of the first educators to volunteer her services.

“When I started work at James Alan, Justice and Soul was just getting started and I knew instantly that this was my calling,” said Amber. “I’d always known I wanted to do some sort of community service around humanism so this was perfect.”

In preparation, Amber created a GoFundMe campaign to raise the capital for her journey and was given vacation time and funds from her colleagues who absorbed her clientele for the time she was away.

“It also really itched my travel bug,” she said. “It’s very rare that your boss lets you go traveling for six weeks and it provided me with an opportunity I’d never otherwise have had. I didn’t really know what to expect but I knew I was in for an awesome experience.”

Amber at the Kate Korpi Salon in Cambodia

Amber’s role at the salon consisted of training young Cambodians in hair design as well as working as a stylist doing cuts and color for the salon’s clientele.

“I met the students when I came straight from the airport with Matthew,” she said. “When I walked in, the energy was upbeat and bright and I saw four smiling faces come at me from all sides of the salon. They were so warm and inviting and curious and I was so excited so we all jumped around a little and had fun together.

“As a survivor of trauma myself, I believe there is a link between humanism and teaching and that education is one of the ways you can be restored and come through it all. I celebrated my 29th birthday in Cambodia, participated in a spiritual ceremony at the Phnom Penh riverside where nobody spoke English, received a blessing from monks in Siem Reap and watched the sun rise over Angkor Wat. Wherever I went, I felt safe and everything was easier than I’d expected.

Thank you notes from the students are on display in the
James Alan Salon and Spa in Shoreline

“Getting to know the students was so humbling and enriching. They became like family and it's awesome to know I contributed to giving these survivors a new path. Phnom Penh became like a second home to me and I made friends I will have for life. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I can’t wait to go back.”

Our sizzling real estate market

By Nan Skinner

You've probably heard that our local real estate market is hot! It is. I like to back up statements like this with statistics. These stats are provided by Northwest Multiple Listing Service and compare the first quarter of 2016 with the first quarter of 2015.

Let's see what they say about the market in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. *Days on Market - Average number of days from the time the house was put on the market until an offer was mutually accepted by seller and buyer.

            ACTIVE LISTINGS

            YTD 2015        YTD 2016

New Listings             258                     287
Average Price        $813,836        $1,064,063
Median Price         $541,175        $   588,687
Average DOM*          71                       60

            CLOSED SALES

            YTD 2015          YTD 2016

Sold                             193                      167
Avg Sale Price        $437,127           $513,175
Average DOM*           42                       16.5

The most significant numbers are the differences between the average list price and the average sale price, the differences between the average number of days on the market between 2015 and 2016, and the 8.5% increase in average sale price between first quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016.

Also, notice that the number of homes sold in the first quarter of 2016 is less than the first quarter of 2015. It's too bad no one (that I know of) keeps records of the average number of offers made on houses because almost everyone I talk to in the biz has either received multiple offers on behalf of their sellers or been in competition with other offers when representing their buyers. I wonder how the ever-popular Spring market will be?

For questions or concerns, contact Nan Skinner at 206-734-9289 (call or text) or rayn@kw.com. Nan is a real estate consultant associated with Keller Williams Realty Bothell. She lives in and loves living in Shoreline.

Review: Becky's New Car

Veronica Tuttel and Jake Fraing
in Becky's New Car at the Phoenix

BECKY’S NEW CAR
By Steven Dietz
Directed by Ted Jaquith
The Phoenix Theatre
April 8 – May 1, 2016

Review by Doug Gochanour

Christine Mosere exchanges her directorial duties for the lead actress role as Becky Foster. Christine gives a fantastic performance, bringing out Becky’s frustration as a middle age woman in a marriage that seems to be declining, a dull job at a car dealership, and with no prospects for future improvement. Unexpectedly, a charming, wealthy widower appears at the car dealership, and Becky perceives an amazing opportunity with Walter. Will she grasp this chance for new life? Will it grasp her instead?

Choices and their subsequent consequences make for hilarious results. Accidental deceptions become solidified with absolute “covering” lies. Throw in the mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and mist opportunities to rectify errors, and then comedy prevails.

The rest of the cast, Rick Wright, Michael McFadden, Steve Heiret, Jake Fraing, Veronica Tuttel, and Melanie Calderwood are wonderfully believable in their respective roles. They offer their comedic talents with perfect timing and finesse.

The audience is drawn into participation on several occasions of interaction. They even get to choose, by clapping, the direction of a choice that Becky must make. Sure, believe that as reciprocal determinism.

Sometimes people make subconsciously intentional mistakes, leading to their being caught in their web of lies. A misplaced cell phone could do it. It allows the guilt-anguished to finally escape their nexus by having the truth come out. Will this happen to Becky? What will the outcome be?

Will Becky’s husband, Joe, kill her new lover, Walter?  Will her son, Chris, marry Walter’s lovely daughter, Kensington? Will Becky’s co-worker, Steve, find a new romantic spice in Walter’s friend, Ginger?

All of this blends together to bring our community another great evening of joy and laughter. It may seem magical, but that is actually part of the MISSION of Phoenix Theatre. The Phoenix organization has succeeded once again. Be sure to experience this rollicking production!

The Phoenix Theatre is located at 9673 Firdale Avenue, Edmonds 98020 (directions).
