Beautiful garden in Richmond Highlands

I have to appreciate people who create beautiful things for neighbors and passersby. The creator of this garden can enjoy it when driving into the garage or braving the hillside to pull weeds but the neighbors can see it all the time.

Too bad my across the street neighbors are not gardeners!

Kenmore girl makes debut as fantasy novelist at Third Place Books May 12

After six years of letters to publishers, 23 year-old Audrey Greathouse is celebrating the release of her first novel with an event at Third Place Books.

In Audrey Greathouse's first novel, The Neverland Wars, millennials meet Peter Pan in a modern coming of age fantasy story.

Third Place Books at 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, will be hosting a signing with limited edition pre-release copies on May 12, 2016 at 7pm.

“I've spent years coming to Third Place to write. I couldn't have picked a better place to celebrate The Neverland Wars, and I'm so happy my favorite indie bookstore wants to support my book,” Greathouse says.
An avid supporter of independent bookselling and publishing, Greathouse is seeing fantastic interest and sales figures for a new author without a corporate publisher.

Pre-orders have already landed the book on Amazon.com bestseller lists, thanks to the enthusiastic local fanbase Greathouse has cultivated over the past six years. This traditionally published novel marks a huge leap forward for the girl who got her start dealing self-published novels out of her locker at Inglemoor High School. Following these impressive figures, Greathouse's publisher has announced its plans to move forward with the story as a trilogy.

Audrey Greathouse
The literary market is booming with books for teens about growing up, but Greathouse's vision is for young adults who aren't as excited about the transition.

The story follows Gwen Hoffman, whose young sister is abducted by Peter Pan. In her attempt to rescue her sister, Gwen becomes stranded in Neverland as a teenager. Even worse, the threat of war comes from adults who want to invade and harvest Neverland's magical resources for practical purposes — like solving the budget crisis — and Gwen will be forced to choose sides in this conflict.

The Neverland Wars is being released by Clean Teen Publishing, an anti-censorship publisher that believes content disclosures and simple rating systems are the solution to helping readers find books suited their values and interests. Greathouse can be found online. She is @missaudreyjoy on Twitter and her book tour stops are listed on her Facebook page.

1600 Runners/Walkers will help stop human trafficking at 8th annual "Free Them 5k" May 7

1600 runners and walkers will participate
in the Free Them 5k on the streets of Shoreline

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, more than 1,600 people in our community will take a stand and help stop global human trafficking. Local people will have a global impact, doing their part to stop human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable.

The World Concern Free Them 5k, now in its 8th year, has raised more than half a million dollars in its history and ensured the protection of tens of thousands of vulnerable children and women living in the world’s poorest places.

Walkers / runners will start at 19303 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline 98133 on Saturday, May 7 at 9am.

Participants also increase awareness about human trafficking by running or walking a 5k route through Shoreline, starting at World Concern’s headquarters on the CRISTA Ministries campus.

Every year runners, walkers, families and friends join together to make a real impact — helping end a horrific crime that enslaves more than 35 million people around the world. Children, women, and men are often lured with promises of jobs or opportunities, only to be trapped into forced labor, prostitution, or modern-day slavery.

Donations to the Free Them 5k go toward educating the poorest and most vulnerable people, and increasing families’ opportunities to thrive. Join us!

King County-Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C) wins national 2016 Climate Leadership Award

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the King County-Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C), of which the City of Shoreline is a member, one of 17 national leadership awards for its innovative and collaborative local government efforts to reduce carbon pollution and confront climate change.

At the April 4 Shoreline City Council meeting, the King County Director of Climate and Energy Initiatives Megan Smith thanked the Council and City staff for their efforts and partnership with K4C.

Since 2011, King County and a growing list of local cities have been working across political boundaries to set targets, pool resources, and make true progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and confronting climate change.

“By working together, the County and K4C cities are able to have greater impact than working alone,” stated Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts. “The largest environmental threat we face today is climate change. I’m proud that Shoreline is a national leader in trying to address this very important issue.”

Honored for “Innovative Partnerships,” K4C is one of only 17 organizations, partnerships, or individuals across the United States to win the prestigious recognition from EPA.

The K4C is a voluntary but formal partnership that was formed based on the recognition that neighboring local governments can achieve greater action on climate solutions by working together. Since its inception, K4C has grown to 14 member jurisdictions, representing 75 percent of the county’s 2 million residents.

“I am proud to distinguish the King County-Cities Climate Collaboration for its outstanding actions and dedication to reduce harmful carbon pollution that leads to climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “K4C is leading the way towards a healthy environment, and demonstrates that meeting challenges of a changing climate can be done.”

The Innovative Partnerships Climate Leadership Awards category recognizes organizations working collaboratively on leading edge climate initiatives. Partnerships have collectively established objectives to measurably address greenhouse gas reduction goals and/or adaptation and resilience activities.

K4C’s accomplishments include:
  • Supporting formal adoption of shared near and long term countywide GHG emissions reduction targets of 25 percent by 2020, 50 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050 (2007 baseline).
  • Developing a comprehensive shared vision and policy framework for confronting climate change that addresses energy supply, green building, land use, forests, and more.
  • Mapping out specific action commitments to reduce emissions that are tailored to King County energy sources, city and county development patterns, and local government areas of influence.
  • Partnering on municipal policy and code changes, joint grant funding proposals, and increased influence among other stakeholders at the state level.
  • Exploring the potential to partner with local utilities and businesses to jointly invest in and develop a large-scale renewable energy project, such as wind or solar.
  • Sharing technical support and learning across K4C members. K4C staff and elected officials from cities large and small now have an extensive network of people on whom they can count for expertise, lessons learned, tools and resources.
K4C partnership members include:
  • King County
  • City of Bellevue
  • City of Burien
  • City of Issaquah
  • City of Kirkland
  • City of Mercer Island
  • City of Normandy Park
  • City of Redmond
  • City of Renton
  • City of Sammamish
  • City of Seattle
  • City of Shoreline
  • City of Snoqualmie
  • City of Tukwila

Small business: Caring Transitions

Jennifer Black and her family

West Seattle resident Jennifer Black embraces being an entrepreneur and is truly passionate about providing timely solutions to challenges faced by an aging local population.

She created Caring Transitions to help families and older adults navigate difficult transitions throughout the planning, moving and move-in process for downsizing and care facilities.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that by 2050 the number of people living in long-term care facilities will double. As this trend plays out in every community in the United States, seniors and their children are faced with difficult issues that range from disposing of a lifetime of belongings to their actual move.

Caring Transitions manages relocation logistics and communications with all parties involved in a move to create the best possible, stress-free outcome. Often times, the best way to begin is with a free home visit, which jump-starts the decision-making process.

The management of antiques and collectibles are often a natural part of the downsizing process. Jennifer offers a solution, as her business incorporates her love of antiques and collectibles. “I am hoping to expand our on-line auction business. There are so many people that have unique and interesting items that they would like to resell or repurpose. With the online sale format, we can partner items together.”

While Jennifer’s office is located in West Seattle, the Caring Transitions Franchises provide services across the Greater Puget Sound. Due to much demand, Jennifer recently expanded services to the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities, as well as an office in the south end that provides services into Olympia.

And, while the service is an attractive and worry-relieving option for older adults and their families, Caring Transitions’ is also a perfect solution for busy families and people clearing out the home of a loved one who has passed.
