The Tulip Ride began 15 years ago as a way for several Microsoft employees to blow off steam during the launch of the original Xbox. On a whim, about a dozen of them decided to ride up to the Skagit Valley Tulip festival. They extended the ride by heading to LaConner for lunch and then home by cruising down Highway 20 over Deception Pass. It was such a great day that it became an annual tradition that grew into the charity event it is today.

For more information about the Tulip Ride, actor bios and a press kit, visit the Tulip Ride Website.

Provide input on parks, recreation, and cultural services in Shoreline

Cromwell Park and the shelter where concerts are staged

Securing our Foundation, Shaping our Future: Provide input on parks, recreation, and cultural services in Shoreline

The City of Shoreline wants to hear from you! Over the next year and a half, the City will be updating Shoreline’s Plan for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (formerly the PROS Plan) and needs your input.

The Plan is a document that creates a 20-year vision and framework providing for Shoreline’s recreation and cultural programs and facilities, and for maintaining and investing in park and open spaces.

There will be several planning events and workshops this summer and fall to solicit your ideas. However, to help inform discussion at these meetings, they want to hear from you now.

You are asked to take about 10-15 minutes to provide your input and feedback on the future of the parks, recreation and cultural programs and facilities in Shoreline by completing an online questionnaire. It is open to everyone and is available here now through the end of June.

Note that the online survey is different from the survey the City conducted in January. If you participated in the January survey, you are encouraged to fill out the online questionnaire as well.

If you have any questions about the Plan update or the survey, contact Parks Project Coordinator Maureen Colaizzi at mcolaizzi@shorelinewa.gov or 206-801-2603.

New Exhibit at the Gallery at LFP Town Center April 5 - May 14, 2016

The Gallery at Town Center Presents

Sydney C’ de Baca and Lauren Heerschap
April 5 – May 14, 2016

The Gallery at Town Center is exhibiting a selection of works by artists Sydney C’ de Baca and Lauren Heerschap, opening April 5, 2016.

See these works and the creations of over 90 other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. Also, please join us at the Gallery for an artist reception on Wednesday, April 20 from 5pm to 7pm.

Sydney C’ de Baca is a watercolor artist who loves to capture all the delightful and quirky colors and shapes of the natural world. She started with vegetable portraits and has moved on to include flowers, fruit, and animals, like the octopus. C’ de Baca began by putting her foodie images on paper products like postcards and art cards, but when she remembered the joy of using my grandmother’s flour sack tea towels, it was a “you got your peanut butter in my chocolate” moment, and her real orientation began.

The artist’s passion for practical kitchen art drives her work: what images, however quirky, bring joy when she walks into her kitchen? That’s what she paints. C’ de Baca also loves the flour sack towel superpower of really drying dishes. It’s this union of beautiful usefulness that centers her work.

Lauren Heerschap lives near Echo Lake in Shoreline, Washington in a house with a perennial garden, a large orange cat named Ramses, and her photographer husband, Henry. Pursuit of the intricate details of a flower and the majesty of mountain tops has led her around the world and into her backyard. Sometimes with a sense of whimsy and color she plays with images on the computer.

Botanical Lace is a series inspired by her mother’s hand crocheted lace, which Lauren scanned and then digitally overlaid on her own photographs of flowers or leaves. To view more of her art, you can visit her website.

The Gallery at Town Center is a program of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council and is located inside the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

Completion of the Lyon Creek Flood Mitigation Project eliminated recurrent flooding in Lake Forest Park that had frequently inundated the City's only fire station, over 20 homes and State Route 522.

The $6.94 million project also restored the lower reach of Lyon Creek, which is an urban salmon-bearing stream, with the removal of numerous fish barriers, installation of large woody debris, excavation of in-stream refuge pools and reestablishment of two wetlands.

Free staged reading of Steel at Shoreline Community College

Chris Fisher's new play will be presented
in a free reading at SCC
Director’s Note
Can we speak now? Are we safe? Has enough time passed? Have we healed enough? May I ask my questions now? I have a lot of questions…

Does my skin color, my religion, my ethnicity make you mad if I ask you my questions?

Fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks it is still heartbreaking to see the pain of the nation and the individuals who buried their loved ones and also their souls under the steel of the Twin Towers. Their minds have wandered with the dust particles since.

This is an invitation to join the conversation. It is time to listen. Believe me, you will hear a lot, and realize, you have a lot to talk about…
----Duygu Erdogan Monson, director

The Shoreline Community College Theatre and Film Department presents a staged read of “Steel”, a new play by Shoreline faculty member, Chris Fisher and directed by Shoreline faculty member, Duygu Erdogan Monson.

It features Shoreline faculty members, Debra Pralle and Tony Doupé, Shoreline alumni, Dawson Doupé and Jason Adkins, Sharva Maynard, Rich Morris, Adrien Gamache and Miles Pralle.

It will be held on April 15 and 16 at 7:30pm at the Shoreline Community College Blackbox Studio Theatre, Rm. 4107 in the basement of the library. Discussion to follow.

Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133, (campus maps). No fee for parking in the evenings.

In the Garden Now: Rhododendron ‘PJM Elite’

PJM Elite Rhododendron

Text and Photo by Victoria Gilleland

Rhododendrons tend to be healthy, easy to grow shrubs in the Northwest, so we don’t always give them the respect that they deserve. After all they are reliably evergreen, put on a fabulous flower show in spring and are available in a wide variety of flower colors, plant sizes and habits. On top of that they actually thrive on our acidic soils and mix well with the native plants we like to include in our gardens.

This PJM variety blooms earlier than many rhododendrons with smallish clusters of intensely colored lavender pink flowers. Shrubs maintain a compact shape and form and may grow to 5 feet tall and wide although this one has been kept more compact by regular pruning after flowering. The small leaves of this variety are a glossy dark green which takes on a purplish cast in fall ….. an added color bonus.

Grow this handsome shrub in a container, mixed border, or even as an informal blooming hedge. I’ve noticed that many more flowers are produced and fall and winter foliage color is better if plants have at least part sun exposure. Some PJMs I’ve seen growing in shade are pretty stingy with their flowers.

Consider this gorgeous easy to grow early spring bloomer for your garden. You’ll love that extra burst of color in the garden.

(Botanical Name:  Rhododendron ‘PJM Elite’)

Victoria Gilleland is the owner of Cottage Garden Designs, a Garden Design company specializing in Redesign of Residential Gardens, Garden Consultation and Coaching. She has been designing gardens in the northwest for over 20 years.

145the zoning - Planning Commission public hearing Thursday

By Diane Hettrick

If you have any interest at all in the zoning changes for the 145th subarea, the Planning Commission is the head of the stream.

If you wait until the City Council is making decisions, your task will be akin to making a U-turn with a battleship.

This is true of many City decisions. This one is different in that it will affect so many people - and that there is precedent in the wide and high changes made in the 185th rezone.

Thursday, the Shoreline Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N.

Agenda Highlights
  • PUBLIC HEARING on Preferred Alternative Zoning to be studied for Final Environmental Impact Statement for 145th Street Light Rail Station Subarea
  • Development Code Amendments Pertaining to Light Rail Systems and Facilities

Rep. Pollet expects enhanced contempt citations against legislature

By Evan Smith

State Rep. Gerry Pollet says that he expects the State Supreme Court to increase its contempt findings and order the legislature to return to Olympia to provide full financial support for the state’s public schools.

The state already is paying $100,000 per day for not complying with a court order that the legislature provide full support for basic education.

He said Saturday that he expects the court to order the legislature to “return to Olympia to fund our children's constitutional rights to basic education.”

He said that contempt of court findings would be increased because of these factors:

• a failure to have invested in public schools the amount of contempt fines accrued, an amount than the Court had ordered to be set aside for investments in public schools;

• the legislature’s spending $4 million on non-common charter schools, while failing to have even provided public schools with the funds from the accrued contempt fines. “If the Legislature could find lottery funds for non-common charter schools, then it should have first used those funds for public common schools,” Pollet said. “This is a classic contempt of court.”

• the legislature’s saying it “adopted a ‘plan’ to fund public schools by the deadline of fall 2017, which consists of saying the legislature will convene in January, 2017, and miraculously develop and fund a plan providing billions of dollars in new state spending for schools by August.”

• the legislature’s having failed to address the massive loss of levy funds for our school districts, known as the "levy cliff."

Pollet represents the 46th Legislative District, including Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and north and northeast Seattle.

Evan Smith can be reached at schsmith@frontier.com

Carolle Foucault

ARTIST STATEMENT:
When I first came across Sumi-e painting, I was intrigued by the spontaneity and expressionistic nature of the media. My teacher always says "The goal is to capture the essence of your subject with as few strokes as possible". This was both freeing and challenging for a detail oriented person like me. Given the unforgiving nature of rice paper, brush strokes often have to flow quickly and be swift. This always makes me feel like I am dancing on paper with my brushes. I still feel like I am dancing with two left feet sometimes. But once in a while I let go of daily stresses, get in tune with the music, and beautiful things happens.."

Rick Paquette

BIO:
I recently discovered the use of resin in my turnings and I'm exploring various ways of incorporating it. So far, that means branch segment accent bands on salad bowls, and decorative bowls with branch segments bathed in resin and little bowls and cups with resin streaks.

I use local woods, such as Alder, Cherry, Holly and Big Leaf Maple but every now and then something semi-exotic falls my way and I try it for accent. I season the wood I use for these bowls for several years in order to stabilize them before I apply resin or branch segments. The interiors of larger salad bowls are treated with walnut oil so they can be used, well, for salads. The exteriors, and interiors, of many of my bowls are coated with a clear hard resin that has been polished.

I've been turning for 30 years and I am finding the use of these materials exciting because they allow the turning to 'emerge' along another dimension.

Women
Chrislove Brandt (100m, 4x100m relay) and Rachel Hansen (800m, 1600m) led the way with two wins each.

Rachel Hansen improved on her current PR in the 1600m that had her ranked #18 on Shorewood’s All-Time List but her ranking remained at #18.
