Service on Saturday for Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Hanning

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Hanning
A service to honor and remember Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Hanning will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 11am at Richmond Beach Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 1512 NW 195th St, Shoreline 98177.

A potluck luncheon – the ultimate fellowship event for Stephen – will be held at the church following the service.

The Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Hanning was born on November 11, 1940 in Akron, Ohio and passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, in Edmonds surrounded by his family. He grew up in St. Marys, Ohio and immediately out of high school, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on a destroyer stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dr. Hanning graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in Russian Language. Upon graduation from Miami, he directed a poverty project for the YMCA in a mining community in West Virginia. He then served as a VISTA Volunteer during the Johnson Administration as part of the "Great Society."

Dr. Hanning felt a calling for the ministry as early as the age of eight, and pursued this calling by attending Yale University Divinity School. His first position out of seminary was Director of the Campus YMCA at the University of Oregon.

Rev. Hanning began his career with the University Congregational Church in Seattle in 1971. From 1974 to 1979, he served as pastor of a yoked DOC - UCC congregation, the United Christian Church of Renton, Washington. Then, from 1979 to 1983 he served the United Church of Christ at Wahpeton, North Dakota.

In 1983 he was called to Richmond Beach Congregational, United Church of Christ, located in Shoreline where he served for ten years. While at RBCC UCC, Rev. Hanning earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Northwest Theological Union of Seattle.

In 1993, he accepted a call to be Ministry Team Leader at Orinda Community Church, Orinda, CA. In 1995, he accepted a call to serve as Senior Minister of Faith United Protestant Church UCC in Park Forest, Illinois. In June of 2006, he retired from full-time ministry and returned to Washington State. Though retired, Stephen then began doing interim ministry for churches in Everett and Ferndale, Washington and Lanai, Hawaii.

Stephen leaves behind his beloved wife and Partner-in-Ministry Violet, children Cynthia (Ronald), Edmund, Gina and Peter (Emily), sister Gail, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and honorary daughter, Peggy, and grandson. Stephen was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Flora and his older brother Ralph.

The focus of Dr. Hanning's ministry was in the areas of civil rights for African Americans and more recently, for gays and lesbians, low-income housing, the prevention of domestic violence and building inter-faith understanding.

For those considering making a donation in his memory, please consider Southern Poverty Law Center or Compass Housing Alliance in Seattle.

Shoreline business owner creates winning Girl Scout cookie dog biscuit

And the winner is ... the "Wagalong," a dog-friendly visual clone of the famous Tagalong Girl Scout Cookie.

Created by Shoreline resident Dawn Ford of The Seattle Barkery, (see previous article) Wagalongs are featured in a Dog Cookie Recipe Cookbook resulting from a month-long contest sponsored by Seattle Humane and Girl Scouts of Western Washington.

"Since dogs can’t eat real Girl Scout Cookies - but we’re pretty sure they wish they could - we created this contest as a fun way to share the Girl Scout Cookie love while spreading an important message about pet adoption," says Stefanie Ellis, Public Relations Director of the Girl Scouts of Western Washington.

Wagalongs dog cookies
Created by Dawn Ford of the Seattle Barkery
According to Laura Follis, Media Relations Specialist at Seattle Humane, the contest shines a spotlight on the close partnership between the two organizations.

"We gave shelter tours to 56 Girl Scout troops last year and they each came with donations to benefit Seattle Humane, including cookie money, hand-made blankets and toys, and bags of food from pet food drives."

Pet, food and lifestyle bloggers were invited to enter dog cookie recipes - adhering to dog-safe ingredient guidelines - and were told "the more recipes look like Girl Scout Cookies, the more you’ll make us smile!"
Dog-si-dogs took second place

Second place went to "Dog-si-Dogs" by Renee Valenti of Reflections Remembered, and third place went to "Pumpkin and Carob Dog Cookies" by Leslie Johnson of Chasing Rabbits Dog Bakery.

The Grand Prize was a $100 gift certificate, basket of pet-related items and apparel from Seattle Humane, a Mud Bay gift certificate, and Girl Scout Cookies.

Second and third place entries won Seattle Humane apparel and Girl Scout Cookies.

145th and SR 522 Bus Rapid Transit remains in ST3 Draft Plan

On Thursday, March 24, the Sound Transit Board proposed a ST3 draft plan for public review. Included in the draft plan is a project to improve NE 145th Street and SR 522 between the 145th Street light rail station and the UW Bothell campus to implement bus rapid transit (BRT) service.

Earlier this year, Shoreline joined with four other cities – Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville – to voice their strong support for including this project in the ST3 package.

Currently, Sound Transit is in the process of evaluating a large list of candidate projects and deciding which projects to include in its ST3 final system plan. SR 522 / NE 145th Street is a major east-west transit corridor that is a key to connecting riders living in the north Lake Washington area to the light rail spine and making the overall transit system work. Including it in the final ST3 plan will ensure a complete network and transit system success.

The north end cities agree the 145th / SR522 BRT project makes sense for north King County and for the sustainable growth of the entire region. They have cited the comparatively low economic cost, existing infrastructure, and rapid projected completion dates as early wins for Sound Transit and the region.

Sound Transit is asking the public to take time to review the information about proposed rail and bus improvements throughout the region and then record their opinions through a short online survey, which can be found here

Other highlights of the draft plan include:
  • Completing the light rail spine from Tacoma to Everett
  • New Eastside light rail connections from Bellevue/Overlake to Downtown Redmond and from Bellevue to Issaquah
  • New light rail service to growing urban neighborhoods of Ballard and West Seattle
  • Early project delivery, including new Bus Rapid Transit on I-405 and SR-522/NE 145th street, and buses running on shoulders along I-5, I-405, SR 518, and SR 167
  • Improvements to Sounder South stations to serve longer trains to carry more passengers and extending the line from Tacoma to DuPont
You can read the full project list and see a static copy of the draft plan system map in the document library here.

See the epic tale of Tarhun in Shoreline this weekend

Hittite gods aeriel trio
This weekend in Shoreline, the Cabiri’s Tarhun brings to life the epic tale of a Hittite lightning god through aerial acrobatics, giant puppets, and contemporary dance.

A mythological exploration of the rites of kingship, the tale follows the storm lord Tarhun, the solar goddess Arinna, and the huntress Inara as they fight to save humanity from the black magic of the elder god Kumarbi and a host of primeval monsters.

See it all for 3 nights only at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center:
  • Thursday, March 31, 7pm
  • Friday, April 1, 7pm
  • Saturday, April 2, 7pm
Tickets are $25 and available at Brown Paper Tickets.

Much of the spectacular aerial dance choreography using hoops, silks, and other apparatus in Tarhun was created by the troupe’s Montreal-based coach Sam Alvarez (Cirque du Soleil, Odysseo).

Alvarez has performed and coached aerial arts, dance and acrobatics for over twenty years and is also the aerial choreographer for Cavalia: Odysseo, currently touring North America.

Each of the handmade puppets created by the Cabiri’s design team, each creature has three puppeteers inside. The music is an original composition by Vasilis Fotopoulos.

Tarhun is suggested for audience members 10 and older. The Shorecrest performing arts center is located on the Shorecrest campus at 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

Shoreline and LFP Democratic caucus results follow statewide trends

Monday, March 28, 2016

Chris Roberts presides over the 32nd District caucus meetings
at Shorewood High School

By Evan Smith

Caucus results Saturday from Democrats in the 32nd Legislative District were consistent with statewide trends.

Democrats in the 32nd District reported turnout that was heavy but nearly 20 percent ower than the record turnout of 2008, when then-Sen. Barack Obama was competing for the nomination with then-Sen. Hillary Clinton. Statewide turnout was 8 percent lower than in 2008.

Shoreline and nearby 32nd District Democrats reported that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders led former Secretary of State Clinton in presidential-preference support by a 70.4 percent to 28.9 percent margin. The district also includes part of northwest Seattle, all of Lynnwood and Woodway, the south part of Edmonds and some unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County.

Statewide results showed Sanders leading Clinton by a 73 percent to 27 percent margin.

The district held all of its hundreds of caucuses at three sites -- Shorewood High School, Edmonds-Woodway High School, and Broadview Thompson Elementary School in northwest Seattle.

The 46th Legislative District, including Lake Forest Park, showed Sanders with the same 73-27 percent lead that he had statewide.

The 46th District includes Kenmore and northeast Seattle in addition to Lake Forest Park. While the 32nd District held caucuses from all of its precincts at three sites, the 46th divided its precinct caucuses among several sites. All the LFP caucuses were held at Lake Forest Park Elementary.

Volunteers with retail experience and drivers needed for Donor Closet in Edmonds

The MSHH Donor Closet in Edmonds is urgently in need of volunteers who are “people persons” with retail experience. Also, and equally urgent is the need for volunteer drivers to make deliveries and pickups of donations.

“This would be a perfect opportunity for someone who no longer works full-time; but would like to apply their skills in a part-time role that seriously helps people with disabilities,” said MSHH President, Richard Marin. “The personal satisfaction you feel at the end of the day is incredible.”

Since 1999, MSHH has supported people with Multiple Sclerosis in Washington State who are experiencing financial difficulties. To raise the money to do this mission, they operate a store that accepts donations of no longer needed Medical and Mobility equipment. They then refurbish the equipment and make it available at a very reasonable “suggested minimum donation” amount.

General Manager, Gene Borden, said “Many of the good people who volunteer here, myself included, have no connection to the MS disease. They are here because they have time and want to be involved in something much bigger than themselves.”

The MSHH Donor Closet is run entirely by volunteers, so all proceeds above expenses go to assist persons living in Washington State with MS who are temporarily experiencing financial difficulty.

What is needed right now are friendly, helpful people to help run the store between 10:00am and 3:00pm any day between Tuesday and Saturday two to four times a month. No previous Medical or Mobility equipment experience is required. Drivers are also needed between those hours. The MSHH Donor Closet is located at 409 Howell Way, Edmonds.

Look at their website and if you are interested in considering being a volunteer, contact Richard Marin at 425-778-3762.

145th rezone - Planning Commission public hearing April 7

Following a break for a Corridor Study for 145th Street, the Planning Commission has begun hosting discussions about the 145th Street Station Subarea Plan.

The Commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday, April 7 at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

At their May 2 meeting, Shoreline City Council may discuss, amend, and/or adopt this Preferred Alternative for further study in the Final EIS.

The project page for the 145th Street Station Subarea Plan has been updated to include all maps, including one that the Commission will use as a base from which to make any modifications. See the City webpage for more information and to review maps.

Author Nina Laden visits Highland Terrace Elementary

Author Nina Laden at Highland Terrace Elementary

Text and photos by Alicia Wilson

Highland Terrace students from Kindergarten through third grade were privileged to have author Nina Laden come to speak to them as well as give them an art lesson this past Monday. Students found the author/illustrator's books to be funny and whimsical. Ms. Laden was able to spend a whole school day while classes came in grade levels to hear her presentations in the library.

Nina is the author and/or illustrator of over 20 books for young readers, including The Night I Followed the Dog which received a Parent’s Choice Gold Award; and a Children’s Choice Award.

Ms. Laden explained to students how many of her stories developed and how they might use their experiences to write. Daily ordinary occurrences have given Nina subjects to write about.

“I was in my garden and saw a Daddy Long-Legs on one of my tomatoes. I started thinking about what would happen if Daddies had the wrong legs.”

Thus the inspiration of her innovative flip book Daddy Wrong-Legs. This funny book allows a child to mix and match legs of other origins: like frog legs or dog legs.

Are We There Yet?
Author Nina Laden at Highland Terrace
Students brought clipboards with paper and a pencil or a crayon to use during Ms. Laden’s talk. She inspired students to use their creativity while giving them step-by-step lessons on how to draw characters.

Ms. Laden taught students how to draw different versions of dogs in their art. Nina says that dogs are animals that have the largest variety of features; from ears to snout to types of hair. So students were able to sketch their own unique dog.

Ms. Laden read her most recent book, Are We There Yet?, about a family visiting grandma while driving through everything from hillsides to Black Holes.

As Nina read every new change of scenery for the children in the book, the Highland Terrace students responded in chorus, “Are we there yet?”

The Highland Terrace PTA generously supports author visits like Ms. Laden's every year for the Kindergarten through sixth grade students.

Parents can give up newborns anonymously within 72 hours of birth

In Everett on Friday, a couple who were walking behind an apartment complex heard a baby crying from inside a large trash compactor. The woman crawled inside the compactor and started moving trash away from the sound. Buried under three feet of trash, reportedly under a microwave, was a newborn baby with the umbilical cord still attached.

In Washington State, per RCW 13.34.360, a parent, within seventy-two hours of a child's birth, can transfer the newborn to a qualified person at a hospital, fire station or federally designated rural health clinic, anonymously and without fear of criminal prosecution for abandoning, or failing to support, the baby.

In King County, a parent can leave a newborn with a qualified individual at hospital emergency departments, or fire stations anonymously up to 72 hours after the birth of a child without fear of prosecution for abandonment.

Friday's story has a happy outcome. The baby was taken immediately to a hospital and reportedly is in good condition.

A previous story was not as good an outcome.

On February 12, 2014, the body of a newborn girl was found near the side of a road in North Bend. Wrapped in a blanket, the newborn was less than half a mile away from Snoqualmie Valley Hospital, a location where infants could be safely and anonymously surrendered under Washington State’s Safety of Newborn Children law.

In response to this story, King County created a King County Safety of Newborn Children Task Force to strategize ways to let the public know how to safely and anonymously give up a newborn.

Friday's story makes it clear that this information has yet to find its way to the people who need to hear it.

Sky Nursery reorganizing site for more efficient pick up and receiving

Sky has removed the old, large building that was on this site

Regular customers of Sky Nursery have watched the demolition of one of the large, old buildings on the site.

General Manager Joe Abken says,

"We’re demolishing the old building so that we can move our pickup and receiving to the south end of the property. Currently, you drive through the middle of the property. The volume of customers, delivery trucks and pickups has increased so much and has made it very congested for shopping."

Abken says that removing the old building will allow them to do their receiving in a more controlled way. It will also enhance the shopping experience as well as increase the general safety of customers, particularly during the busy spring months.

Futurewise awards City Livable Communities Award for 185th Street Station Subarea Plan

From the City of Shoreline

On March 16, Futurewise awarded the City a Livable Communities Award for its 185th Street Station Subarea Plan. The award recognizes the City’s efforts to encourage smart growth in the community through adoption of policies and regulations that exemplify smart land use principles, which help to create healthy communities.

“As the region continues to grow, so will Shoreline,” stated Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts. “The work we did on the 185th Street Station Subarea helps ensure that growth is concentrated around transit investments instead of allowing it to spread throughout the city. This will help create a more walkable community, with greater housing options, and will better support neighborhood businesses.”

The City has resumed the planning process for the 145th Street Station Subarea Plan, which will be a similar process to the 185th planning process. More information and find out about upcoming meetings here.

As a smart growth advocate, Futurewise works to protect forests, farms, and shorelines by limiting development on critical rural and resource lands and habitat. Futurewise’s Livable Communities program advocates and promotes vibrant, compact, livable development in our urban communities by supporting housing options, transportation choices, and smart development patterns.

Saturday, March 26, 2016

  • Forecast
  • Last week's data
  • March not as rainy
Forecast: Following a smaller storm front overnight into Sunday we will have showers around with the chance of some thunder showers. Winds will be breezy as well, reaching near 25mph at times. Sunday night and Monday showers will remain but not as numerous. Monday night through next weekend we are going into a dry and warm period. Weather will turn very spring like with sunny days into the mid 60's and cool nights into the 40's and maybe upper 30's at times.

Longer range shows that this dry period could last well into the second week of April.

Last week's data:
High temperature: 63.0°F (Saturday)
Low temperature: 42.4°F (Thursday)
Rainiest day: 0.31 inches (Monday)
Total rainfall: 0.55 inches
Warmest day: 54.1°F (Saturday)
Coldest day: 47.0°F (Friday)
Average temperature: 49.5°F (Much warmer than normal)
Historic average temperature for last week: 43.6°F

Daily Temperatures for March 2016 compared to 7 year average.
Graph and data by Carl Dinse
March not as rainy: Total rainfall for March 2016 is at 4.88 inches. We haven't quite reached our 7 year average at 5.33 inches. Since the month is likely ending with a spring like pattern of dry and sunny weather I don't think we will break past our average for March, giving us relief from breaking rainfall records for the first time in 4 months.

Governor Inslee has declared April 23rd as Washington Coast Cleanup Day. Inslee says in his proclamation,

“Washington’s Pacific Coast is threatened by tons of household plastics, lost fishing gear, and the other man made debris polluting the world’s oceans and washing up on our beaches…the success of the effort to save our coast from marine debris depends on participation by volunteers from outdoor recreation groups, schools, service clubs, and community organizations throughout Washington.”

You can help clean the beach April 23

Washington CoastSavers is pleased to announce that online registration is now open for participation in the Washington Coast Cleanup, April 23. Volunteers can visit the CoastSavers website and select from dozens of beaches to clean from the Long Beach Peninsula to the Olympic Peninsula.

Jon Schmidt, Washington Coordinator, said "Last April, we had 1,500 volunteers remove 19 tons from over fifty beaches, on July 5th we had about 300 volunteers help remove 120 tons! Last September, 300 volunteers removed another 6 tons. All told, over 2,000 volunteers removed at least 145 tons!"

First ever fundraising event April 9

On April 9, Washington CoastSavers will host their first-ever fundraising event, “An Evening of Ocean Art, Adventure and Music.” The event will feature a live and silent auction for ocean-themed art and coastal experiences. In addition, the surf rock band, The Echo Devils will perform two sets during the event which starts at 6:30pm and ends at 9pm at The Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle 98115.

Alaskan Brewing Company is a new sponsor of CoastSavers and their beer will be available for sale at the event, with proceeds to benefit the Washington Coast Cleanup.

“It’s not every day you can support clean beaches by enjoying a cold beer,” exclaimed Schmidt.

Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
