Twin Ponds Giving Garden second in region for giving

Lettuce Link, a program of King County’s Solid Ground, recently released their 2015 end of Season Report.

The giving garden gardeners at Shoreline’s Twin Ponds Park donated 4,074 pounds of produce to Hopelink Shoreline’s food bank, coming in second out of 60 regional p-patch giving gardens.

Giving gardeners share the bounty of their gardens with their communities by donating to local food banks or emergency meal programs.

“The Giving Garden gave me a place to share my time and have an impact in my community,” stated Twin Ponds Giving Garden gardener Nancy Short. “I shared amazement over worms and cabbage moth jails with neighborhood kids. I shared time working alongside friends, creating something beautiful and valuable, and I shared gardening adventures with visitors. Life doesn't get much better than that.”

Hopelink Shoreline Center Manager Kevin Osborn said,

“Fresh produce is so important to one’s diet. Many of our (Hopelink) clients don’t have the space to grow fruits and veggies and/or work so many hours that they just don’t have the time and energy to properly tend to a garden.”
“The Giving Garden and Twin Ponds has been crucial to our fresh produce supply for clients. The variety of fruits and vegetables coming from the Twin Ponds Garden has been wonderful and we continually here praise from food bank participants about the quality and quantity!”

Solid Ground is a non-profit that works to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Its Lettuce Link program provides seeds, gardening materials, information, and signs for giving gardens. It also offers resources, ideas, and support to help giving gardens grow and develop.

The City of Shoreline offers two organic community gardens to the Shoreline community. One is located at Twin Ponds Park and the other at Sunset School Park. More information about Shoreline’s community gardens here.

Storm damage: Door Store sign

Other than tree branches through ceilings, the most dramatic local storm damage was the Frank Lumber Door Store sign.

The store is located at 17727 15th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155 in North City. This is one of the highest points in Shoreline.

As you can see by the photos, the wind was so strong that the sign bent the support column.

Seattle City Light power outage mpa

One area of Lake Forest Park remains. 145 customers may have to wait until 7:45pm tonight for their power to be restored. The cause is a tree - which is the cause listed for most of the outages (the other causes were listed as 'under investigation').

Town Center has power. It's the area immediately behind Town Center and running along Perkins Way that has been out since yesterday.

Progress for most - no power still for others

Seattle City Light power outage map
3:30am Monday

Progress had been made by 3:30am on Monday morning. Ballinger was mostly restored, except for a few customers. Richmond Beach and Innis Arden west of around 12th NW were back online.

But residents of large areas of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park were hoping that their cell phone change would last long enough for the alarm to wake them up in the morning.

KUOW posted a photo of a home in the 19000 block of 33rd Ave NE in Lake Forest Park where wind peeled back the roof.

Classes were canceled for the day at Shorewood High School and Einstein Middle School. Two hour late starts at Parkwood Elementary and Highland Terrace Elementary.

Just scattered outages in Shoreline by midday Monday but a large section with around 275 customers around Horizon View in LFP was still out.

5pm - more outages - but the worst should be past

Seattle City Light outage map at 5pm
10pm - no change to the map

There have been a couple of fierce gusts of wind, but predictions are that the worst should be past by now, at 5pm.  The outage map is worse. That might mean that more trees fell, or perhaps it simply means that previous outages have now been reported and the map updated.

Car over embankment in Edmonds
Looks like all of west Shoreline is on battery power. Ballinger and Lake Forest Park aren't doing too well, either. Go visit friends in Echo Lake or Ridgecrest.

In Edmonds, other than trees down, a car went over an embankment and it took police 45 minutes to extract the driver.

In Seattle, a big tree fell on a car in Seward Park, killing the male driver. A toddler in the back seat had minor injuries but was pulled to safety.

Kruckeberg Gardens had to cancel their Leprechaun Hunt and close the Gardens for the day.

Bridges across Lake Washington were closed because of water over the roadway.

A tree fell on a house in the Hillwood neighborhood of Shoreline, with branches puncturing the roof and coming into the living room like spears.

Central Market is open. They have no power so you will not have access to the refrigerated cases.

A skinny, but very tall tree fell over three lanes of I-405 just north of SR 527, taking 405 to one lane and backing up traffic for miles.

The storm is here

Seattle City Light outages at 3:30pm

I drove from Shoreline to Kirkland at 2:30pm Sunday. The wind didn't seem so bad from inside the house, but it was very dramatic once I stepped outside. The street was already green with small branches and tufts of fir trees and the wind was roaring.

All the traffic lights were out on Ballinger, from Ballinger Village to Town Center. Fortunately, the light at Bothell Way was still functioning. Drivers were remembering to treat the dark intersections as four-way stops, but everyone seemed to be confused by left turn lanes.

I could see whitecaps on Lake Washington - I'm sure it has happened before but I have never seen it in Lake Forest Park. Waves were breaking on the beach at the Civic Club.

On Bothell Way heading into Kenmore, the right lane was blocked by LFP Public Works trucks who were just finishing clean up on the right hand lane. It looked like a tree had fallen on the roadway.

The power outage map looks like a duplicate of last week's storm, with trees down, many calls to City Light, and virtually the same areas without power.

The Seattle Times reports that the ramp on to northbound I-5 at 175th is partially blocked by trees.

New Honors program at SCC provides path to Bachelor's degree

Shoreline Community College announced a new program that will support eligible students to earn an associate degree with honors and transfer to a top four-year university to complete their bachelor’s degree — saving a significant amount on the cost of their overall tuition for a bachelor’s degree. The new program, American Honors, will enhance the existing Honors program offered at Shoreline.

“The American Honors program is a tremendous opportunity for students to get even more out of their Shoreline experience,” says Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D., President of Shoreline Community College. “It’s an ideal avenue – and an extraordinary academic opportunity – for those who are looking to continue their education beyond community college.”

By starting local, American Honors program graduates report saving up to 40% on the total cost of their bachelor's degree. Students in the American Honors program prepare for junior- and senior-level coursework in small, rigorous Honors classes. For two years, Honors students develop leadership and academic skills in a close-knit community with the support of one-on-one advising.

Students are able to apply for transfer to any four-year college or university, or take advantage of transfer agreements with a network of top colleges and universities in the exclusive American Honors National Transfer Network. Four-year schools in the growing American Honors Network include universities in Washington such as Gonzaga University, University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, and Whitworth University.

Shoreline Community College will offer the program in Fall 2016. Students interested in applying should email Admissions with questions. The selection process is holistic and examines candidates’ leadership abilities, extracurricular activities, academic achievements, standardized test scores, and commitment to the ideals of the program.

American Honors is a 2-year honors program offered through the collaboration of DC-based Quad Learning and leading community colleges.

Letter to the Editor: An act of kindness

To the Editor:

Last week, I took my Aunt to Spirit Nails, at 18820 Aurora Ave N, Suite 103, Shoreline, WA 98133.

During our visit, it began to rain. When we were getting ourselves together to leave, they asked if we drove or took the bus. I told them that we took the bus. They offered us an umbrella to take with us. I told them that we would be fine. The owner then proceeded to get her jacket on and held the umbrella over us, while we walked the ten blocks to get to our next stop.

I have been taking my Aunt to Spirit Nails for several months, since it is the only salon I found that would do a pedicure for my Aunt, who is wheelchair bound. They lovingly work on both her feet and hands and do a fantastic job on her nails, at a reasonable price. As we walked in the rain together, I was so moved by this act of kindness. This act went beyond the service that they offer and exemplifies to me the true quality of care that they provide.

May we all remember the moments that are available to us to do similar acts of kindness, which make this community a great place to live in.

WeatherWatcher: High Wind Warning issued for Sunday, Forecast, Monthly Graphs

  • High Wind Warning
  • Forecast
  • Monthly Graphs
High Wind Warning: The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a High Wind Warning for the greater Seattle area including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The warning is in effect on Sunday from Noon to 11pm.

Southeast winds are expected to increase from our already breezy conditions Saturday to 20-30mph with gusts to 45mph during the morning and early afternoon. Then in the mid-afternoon a shift to southwest winds will occur with a rise in wind speeds to 30-45mph with gusts to 70mph. The winds are expected to last through the early evening hours and slowly decrease into the late evening.

Looking east on N 200th St across Dayton Ave N.
Photo by Carl Dinse on August 29, 2015.

I suspect this storm will cause similar scenes to what was captured in the photo above throughout the area. If this forecasted warning holds true this will be the strongest wind event of the fall / winter season. The wind event we had August 29, 2015 would come in second place with a gust of 56mph.

These kind of winds are likely to bring trees down especially with our saturated soils, so expect wide spread power outages and storm damage with Sunday's storm.

To put this forecasted wind event into perspective, Thursday's wind event only brought a gust of 42mph here.

Forecast: Monday-Tuesday showers are likely with breezy conditions at times in the wake of Sunday's storm. Wednesday - Friday a clearing and sunny trend looks likely with highs reaching the upper 50's. The weekend looks like it's going to transition back to a wet pattern.

Graphs: March's average rainfall is 5.32 inches at my station. This March we have already counted 3.72 inches not even half way through the month. Temperatures are a little above average as well, which in that respect is typical of an El Niño season. I've graphed out the daily high and low temperatures as well as the daily rainfall for the month of March so far.

Mud Bay partners with local shelter and foster organizations, more than 30 of them between Washington and Oregon. They offer their stores to animal welfare organizations for adoption days, help them get things they need to care for their animals such as food, cash, and supplies through drives in the stores, participate in sponsorships at their fundraising events, in-store events to help them raise awareness of their organizations, and many other activities.
