AG obtains refunds for students defrauded by student loan company

Following a legal victory in August, Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced a $418,000 judgment has been entered against a student loan debt adjusting company that overcharged Washington state students and collected unlawful fees.

StudentLoanProcessing.US (SLP) and its president, Peter Krause, will pay $144,896 to refund its customers for illegal charges and an additional $124,000 for costs, attorney’s fees, monitoring and future enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act. Another $150,000 in penalties will be suspended as long as SLP abides by the terms of the agreement.

All 86 Washington student victims will receive full refunds of the money they paid to SLP. The Attorney General’s Office will distribute the refunds. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has an ongoing lawsuit against the company.

“Students graduate from Washington universities with an average of nearly $25,000 in debt,” Ferguson said. “This firm preyed on students who sought their help. I will not tolerate the financial abuse of already overburdened Washington students. I’m pleased this agreement offers a measure of justice for the victims.”

Shoreline woman publishes first book: Have a little pun

A Pretty Big Dill!

Frida Clements is a Shoreline illustrator / author whose first book was published earlier this year by Chronicle Books. It is available on Amazon and can be ordered at Third Place Books and other book stores.

"Have A Little Pun" is an illustrated play on words that combines Frida's charming illustrations with clever puns on every page.

Born in Sweden, Frida has been a north Seattle / Shoreline resident since the age of four, and her Northwest roots have remained intact for over 35 years. As her professional career has evolved, her work has become synonymous with the vibrant music scene of the Pacific Northwest, having been commissioned not only to produce artwork for huge local events like Sasquatch! and the Northwest Folklife Festival but also for major touring acts like Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Iron + Wine, Andrew Bird and many, many others.

"My personal style has developed over time," Frida commented. "A passion for poster design and love of local music led to my position as the senior designer for Seattle Theatre Group, where I really began to find my niche. Now as an independent illustrator I continue to focus on my growth as an artist through posters and personal projects."

If you've been introduced to Frida's work, it's hard to mistake it. Her signature style is very nature-inspired, involving precise line work and a meld of Scandinavian and Northwest aesthetics. Seattle Weekly honored her in 2010 by naming her "Best Show Poster Artist," she's been featured many times as "Poster of the Week" in The Stranger, and her work has been featured in books "1000 Indie Posters" and "Gig Posters Volume II."

With Frida's latest venture, "HAVE A LITTLE PUN," she highlights her wit along with her artistic skill.

Chronicle Books markets the book with: Having a bad hare day? Feeling a little antsy? What the hail, just dill with it, and for fox sake, have a little pun as a humorous description of this delightful collection.

For Frida, the love of puns started just a year and half ago and it was purely kismet.

"I had been invited to participate in a sketch night at a local pub, but when I showed up, no one was there - turns out I had mixed up the date in my calendar," Frida recalls. "I decided to spend the night drawing anyway. I drew a whale, then spontaneously hand-lettered 'Oh Whale' underneath. Thus began my obsession with illustrated puns! It was fun, silly, and totally liberating in the best way."

There is a line of 16 notecards in conjunction with the book, featuring some of Frida's most hilarious and encouraging illustrations such as, "Hey Gull Friend" and "Gopher It."

Frida completed her first fully illustrated book, "The Wandering Goose" by Heather Earnhardt, in September of 2013 via Sasquatch Books / Random House.

at the Driftwood Players

Edmonds Driftwood Theatre brings you home for the holidays with The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and the preimiere of Timmy Perlmutter's Extraordinary Hanukkah

Edmonds Driftwood Players is gearing up for the season with an exciting holiday production for the entire family. Barbara Robinson’s classic tale about the trouble-making Herdman kids, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, will remind audiences about the true meaning of Christmas.

And Driftwood is thrilled to premiere the original one-act musical by Paul Lewis and Carissa Meisner Smit, Timmy Perlmutter’s Extraordinary Hanukkah, the sweet story about how a young boy comes to realize that his family is the greatest gift of all. 18 performances will run November 27 - December 20, 2015 at the Wade James Theatre. New-to-Driftwood director, Andrew Coopman, has brought his creative vision to the production.

Of this unique holiday event, Coopman says
“Audiences will see what brings people together for the holidays and how much tradition and family plays a role in what is one of the most beloved times of the year.
We celebrate multiple holidays within the contexts of the show, but what is at the core of both shows is that there is more to the holidays and to the people around us than meets the eye.
It has been truly an honor to work with this amazingly talented cast, and their hard work and talent is present in every moment of the show.”

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Wild Rover No More

Wild Rover No More by L.A. Meyer

The cover illustration shows Jacky facing a noose once again, and the subtitle is "Being the Last Recorded Account of the Life and Times of Jacky Faber." Has Jacky come to her untimely-but-not-unforeseen end at last? Well, certainly not before she disguises herself as a governess, runs away with the circus, and involves nearly all her friends in a desperate escape plan. And even then, how could the authorities hang our merry lass?

Jacky's full-tilt adventures are brought to a quick conclusion in this twelfth and final novel in the Bloody Jack Series. There is a distinct air of abruptness to the last third of the narrative; the author made no secret of his plan to pre-write the final chapters in the series so that they could be clipped on to the existing storyline at almost any point if he became unable to continue writing the story, and that is clearly the case with this book. Still, the story is fast, fun, and satisfying, and a recommended read for those who love the series and newcomers seeking a ripping good adventure story.

RIP, L.A. Meyer, you did well. Ages 13 to adult; some minor cussing, kissing and bloodshed, but all sexual situations are off-page.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

Report from Lake Forest Park City Administrator Nov 12

City Administrator Report, City of Lake Forest Park
November 12, 2015
Pete Rose, City Administrator

I. Intergovernmental and local issues update

• Meetings: The Public Works Director and City Administrator attended a Sound Cities Association meeting and heard a discussion of Association of Washington Cities legislative priorities. The AWC Legislative Steering Committee is focusing its efforts on five thematic areas: Infrastructure, Fiscal sustainability, Emergency Responsiveness, Public Records, and Human Services /Homelessness
/Affordable Housing. The presenter, Allison Hellberg, noted that we should manage expectations about what can be accomplished this short session with the key cost issue of McCleary compliance as well as the legislature trying to plot a course to deal with Initiative Measure 1366. It was further noted that Measure 1366 is built around 2/3 majority for tax increases, but the first 2/3 majority (if the legislature chooses to comply) is needed to start a constitutional amendment – this at a time when the legislature partisan split is nearly 50/50.

II. Internal City Information

• Appointment: Annette Heller has been appointed as Payroll Accountant. Currently in a combined position as Utility Billing Coordinator and Public Works Department Assistant, Annette will vacate the half-time Public Works position and assume the half-time Payroll position, which is a promotion. Annette will assist Public Works as much as possible until the recruitment and transition of the successor.

III. Council Information

• Red Light Camera: The 170th Street/Bothell Way cameras went live on October 30. We are hoping this makes drivers mindful of the location and that it contributes to the safety of the multiple vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian movements in that intersection. City

 • Police Staffing: Recent hire Officer Ross Adams has completed his police academy refresher. He previously completed his field training rotations. Ross is now on fully on patrol duty.

• Tree Removals

  • Burke Gilman Trail: Should citizens ask, King County is removing several aged poplar trees from the same vicinity near 170th Street where the poplar came down and resulted in a long power outage in much of Lake Forest Park. The City asked for them to be evaluated and this resulted in a number having to be removed.
  • City Hall: There are two trees being removed this week from green space between City Hall and Ballinger Way. The large willow received significant damage in a recent storm and the arborist recommended its removal. An appropriate replacement will be planted.
IV. Community Events
• Upcoming City Sponsored Events
  • City Council Special Committee of the Whole Meeting November 9, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ City Hall

One of America’s great works of drama, “All My Sons” confronts many of the pressing issues of our time, from corporate greed, to the cost of war, to the American Dream. A tense, heartbreaking study of loss and love—do not miss it!

Albertsons bids to buy Shoreline Haggen

Albertson's is bidding for the Shoreline Haggens
which was previously Safeway

According to a story Tuesday in The Seattle Times, Albertsons is bidding to buy 36 stores that Haggens recently acquired and is now selling.

Haggens acquired the stores when Albertson and Safeway merged and were forced to divest themselves of several hundred stores nationwide in an anti-monopoly ruling by the Federal Trade Commission. This included the Albertsons in Lake Forest Park and the Shoreline Safeway at 155th and Aurora.

Haggens has kept the Lake Forest Park location but is closing and selling the Shoreline location.

Now Albertsons is bidding for the Shoreline store - not be be confused with the Haggens (formerly TOP Foods) on 175th that closed in July 2013, which is going to be multiple stores, including Trader Joe's.

Host a Vision House Giving Tree Gift Card drive for homeless families

Gift Card Giving Tree
Help create happy memories for local homeless families by hosting a Giving Tree gift card drive.

Signing up is easy!

1) Contact us today to order your Giving Tree gift card kit. We'll mail instructions and supplies, including handmade gift tags printed with a store name and dollar amount range (i.e. Albertsons, $15 - $25).

2) Hang our gift tags on a Christmas tree (any holiday display will do!) for people in your workplace, community, etc. to take and fulfill.

3) Collect gift cards from those who picked up a gift tag. Store in a safe place.

4) Arrange to deliver the cards to one of two convenient Vision House locations in Shoreline or Renton. As our thanks, we will have a sweet treat waiting for you! All gift cards are due back by December 28, 2015.

5) Enjoy your holiday, knowing you made a difference in the lives of homeless families.

Gift cards empower Vision House residents by allowing them to stretch their dollars a little further while giving them choices in what to purchase. Using a gift card to meet immediate needs frees up parents to work on other things, such as job resumes and permanent housing applications.

You can make a big difference in the life of a homeless child this season!

To sign up to participate or for more information, contact Andrea 425-228-6356.
