NE 178th Street construction detour to last a few more weeks

Photo courtesy City of Lake Forest Park

The NE 178th Street sidewalk project is making great progress. Work on the unopened street segment between Brookside Boulevard and 37th Avenue NE will continue for the next several weeks.

The project is currently on time and under budget, and the following elements of the project design are complete: 1) the streets surrounding Brookside Elementary School were reopened by the beginning of the school year; 2) the contractor was out of the creeks by the September “fish window” end date; and, 3) the McAleer Creek Culvert was replaced with a larger, more fish-friendly design of greater capacity.

Because of completed work in other areas of the project, the site configuration leaves no other place to store equipment and materials except the Brookside Boulevard to 37th Avenue NE roadway segment.

The project design firm, Gray and Osborne, Inc., set aside 140 work days for construction duration. While hopeful for an earlier completion, it may not be possible.

With major funding from the “Safe Routes to Schools” program, the Transportation Improvement Board, and federal funding, this project brings approximately seven blocks of new sidewalk to Brookside Elementary School, a separate uphill bike lane on NE 178th Street, and two pedestrian-actuated crossing signals. Further, the project provides for testing pervious concrete paving on some of the sidewalk and some “green” drainage features.

Perfect Day for a Blood Drive: Halloween

Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach Saturday

By Tom Petersen

Yes.

They vant to suck your blood.

The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW in Richmond Beach, on Saturday, Halloween, from 10am to noon and 1 to 4pm.

Though the bloodmobile staff can be counted upon to play up the spirit of the occasion --- it's their favorite day of the year --- there's nothing ghoulish about donating blood. Most adults over 110 pounds (and 16 to 18 year olds, with parental permission) are eligible, and there is a constant need for blood. Each pint can be divided for use in saving lives, helping people with chronic ailments, and for important medical research.

Donating blood takes just 45 minutes, from walking in to walking out. It is safe and a visit to a bloodmobile or donation center is like a mini check-up. In Richmond Beach, where the neighborhood theme is "We Show Up!", it's like a little community party, with a jovial, festive mood.

Appointments are recommended but not required. They can be made online (go to Donate Blood >> Search Blood Drives >> 98177). Walk-ins are welcome and encouraged. Bloodworks is always looking for new donors. Experienced donors should check to see that it's been eight weeks since their last donation; the previous Richmond Beach blood drive was cancelled because of a staffing shortage, but there was also a huge response to the emergency blood drives in September after the Aurora Bridge bus crash disaster.

All prospective donors need to bring photo I.D.

Shorecrest skunks Glacier Peak on Senior Night, 5-0

The Shorecrest girls soccer team came to life in the second half, erupting for five goals to defeat Glacier Peak 5-0 on Senior Night at Shoreline Stadium Wednesday night.

Senior Anna Boyle and junior Kate Wiper split time in net for the Scots' ninth consecutive shut-out.

When Junior Lauren Brown scored five minutes into the second half, there was a feeling in the air that the dam was about to break. Senior Alexa Iacalucci confirmed that thought when she drilled a long shot just one minute later. Senior Sophia Viviano netted one five minutes after that, and Brown accounted for another goal with 24 minutes to play in the game. Four goals in 11 minutes.

Sydney Coe scores on a header

Senior defender Sydney Coe scored a rare (for her) goal on a header from senior Mara Trostle in the game's final minute. When asked after the game where on her head she struck the ball for her first varsity goal, a giddy Coe pointed to a spot dead-center on her forehead. "I hit it perfectly", she smiled.

Shorecrest (11-1 in WESCO, 14-1-1 overall) opens District One 2A tournament play this Saturday when they host the Lynden Lions at 3pm at Shoreline Stadium.

Another successful Halloween Carnival in Richmond Beach

There were other rooms, as well as outside activities

Photos by Bob Pfeiffer

Saturday was the traditional Halloween Carnival at Syre Elementary School, sponsored by the RBCA – Richmond Beach Community Association.

People have a good time with their costumes.

There was the traditional haunted house walk, spooky haunted cake walk dance, and several popular games, inflatable bounce and slide this year, along with some new games.

Emphasis on games for kids

The event ran from 3-7pm for general audiences with a 2-3pm special hour for kids with special needs.  (The event is so popular that it becomes loud and can be overwhelming during regular hours)

Even those from other galaxies were there

It takes over 100 students and 100 adult volunteers and the RBCA members to put on this very popular annual Halloween Carnival.

The leprechaun and the pot of gold were there.

The event is an activity of the Richmond Beach Community Association.

Shoreline man honored with AKC Lifetime Achievement Award

John Cox of Shoreline has been honored by the AKC

AKC Announces Recipients of the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Awards

New York, NY – The American Kennel Club® (AKC) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 AKC® Lifetime Achievement Awards: Patti L. Strand (Conformation) of Portland, Oregon, John Russell (Performance) of Gainesville, Texas, and John Cox (Companion Events) of Shoreline.

The Awards, first created and awarded in 1999, are presented in recognition of exceptional participation and achievement within the dog fancy. The finalists and winners, based on nominations from AKC member clubs, have impacted the dog sport on a national level through club involvement, judging, exhibiting, breeding and teaching.

The honorees, who were selected from votes cast by AKC member clubs, will receive engraved Revere bowls on Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Delegates luncheon held in conjunction with the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando, Florida. A sterling silver Tiffany and Co. bowl, engraved with the names of all recipients past and present, is on permanent display at AKC headquarters in New York City.

Companion Events: John Cox of Shoreline, Washington

John received his first Saint Bernard, Nicklus, in 1969. This puppy went on to become the breed’s most-titled (at the time) American and Canadian Champion, as well as American and Canadian Utility Dog. Since Nicklus, John has lived with eight other Saints earning additional championships and UDTs, and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi earning a Tracking title.

He started all over again in 1998, with a Saint puppy Kris, imported from Belgium. Kris surpassed John’s other Saint’s record as the most-titled Saint Bernard Champion with 39 titles to his name (nine Master titles in Agility, UDT, TD, RAE2, DD, plus a VCD2.) His current Saint, Ms. May, completed her Bronze Grand Championship along with a BN, PCD, GN, PCDX, CDX, CGCA. She now holds the breed’s record as the most-titled Grand Champion at the different levels. All John’s dogs are owner-handled to all titles.

John started judging AKC obedience in 1978, making 2015 his 37th year of judging. Over the years he has been writing the “Dog Talk” and “Random Little Tidbits” articles for Front and Finish. It is his hope that the articles will point out to handlers where points can come off and maybe the team’s scores will go up with a better understanding of the Obedience Regulations. It is not always the dog that errors!

After 40 years of research, John has built a Saint Bernard National Archives with data on the Saint Bernard reaching back to 1879. The Archives has the names of every Saint Bernard who earned AKC titles, plus conformation/performance records, firsts of the breed, and records of the breed.

Introductory statement from Northshore Utility incumbent Margaret Wiggins

By Evan Smith

Northshore Utility District incumbent Commissioner Margaret Wiggins recently sent a statement introducing herself to voters.

Wiggins will meet challenger Matt Breysse on the Nov. 3 general election ballot for a six-year term on the board of the Kenmore-based Northshore Utility District, which includes part of Lake Forest Park.

Breysse has not sent a statement. Here is Wiggins’ statement:

Northshore Utility District commissioner Position 3

Matt Breysse - did not submit a statement

Margaret Wiggins
Margaret Wiggins

Thank you for allowing me to represent you on The Board of Commissioners. I have eighteen years’ experience, and I am a USAF veteran. My disaster recovery goals are almost met. We have reinforced our water tanks to resist a major earthquake. Our water supply is sufficient for population growth beyond 2060. Our conservation investment is $2 million per year for the regional program. Rates have gone up, but our district rates have been kept below the cost of living index despite wholesale increases over that benchmark. I was recently elected Board President, and I have established excellent working relationships among various cities and suppliers in the region. It is my goal to hold rate increases down while insuring supply and reliability. Our Board works well together, and we support our staff needs resulting in many accolades from customers. Your vote will allow me to continue as your representative.

Washington State Patrol to conduct Move Over Law Emphasis Patrol

Chief John R. Batiste announced the Washington State Patrol (WSP) will conduct an emphasis patrol state wide beginning October 27, to October 29, to bring increased awareness to the Move Over Law.

Between 2007 and 2014, 212 WSP vehicles were struck while conducting traffic stops or providing motorist assistance. Three troopers and multiple citizens have been injured in collisions over the last seven years, as a result of vehicles either striking the trooper or a parked emergency vehicle.

According to the Move Over Law, RCW 46.61.212, drivers approaching an emergency zone are required to either move over to another lane in the same direction, if it is safe to do so, or if a driver is unable to move over safely, proceed with caution and reduce the speed of their vehicle.
Emergency vehicles include police, fire, medical, tow trucks and vehicles providing roadside assistance, making use of hazard lights.

This is a nationwide problem. In 2014, WSP troopers stopped over 4,000 violators of the Move Over Law.

Not burglars - King County Assessors will be working in Sheridan Beach

A crew of five people from the King County Assessors office will be evaluating property in the Sheridan Beach neighborhood of Lake Forest Park starting now and continuing into summer of 2016.

The process may include:

  • knocking on doors of residences
  • physical inspections of front and rear of residences, including measurement
  • taking photographs of residences
  • driving slowly along residential streets
  • parking and walking along residential streets
They will be carrying identification and will introduce themselves to residents encountered during the process. In addition, LFP Police and Block Watch captains have their names, vehicle description, and license numbers.

The King County Assessor values property on a cyclical basic according to a revaluation plan filed with the Washington State Department of Revenue. Each year, approximately one-sixth of all King County residential properties are physically inspected while the remaining five-sixths of the residential properties are statistically adjusted. Fair market values are based on an examination of multiple years of market sales. Telephone contact for the King County Department of Assessments is 206-296-7300.

Op-Ed: To Stem Shortfall of Math Competencies, Start Early

Rep. Ruth Kagi, D-32
By Rep. Ruth Kagi, 32nd Legislative District

During my 17 years in the Washington state legislature, I’ve made it a priority to fight for our public education system. We’ve made substantial progress in transforming classrooms across the state into inclusive environments that foster learning and prepare our children for adult life, but the job is far from finished. The legislature must fully fund our K-12 schools, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs.

In Seattle’s high-tech economy, it’s critically important that we create a STEM-skilled workforce that is prepared to meet the needs of our local employers — from Boeing to Microsoft to Amazon and beyond. Since 2005, King County alone has added more than 50,000 technology-related jobs. In 2011, 20 percent of all U.S. jobs – 26 million positions – required knowledge in at least one STEM field. That number is estimated to grow 17 percent by 2018, compared with only 9.8 percent growth for all other fields combined.

In my role as Chair of the Early Learning and Human Services Committee, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges of ensuring that our youngest learners are getting the early education opportunities necessary to prepare them for elementary and secondary classroom environments. The budget we passed this year makes a historic investment of $159 million in early learning, which will increase educational success and save millions of dollars in special education and repeated grades. Even still, by the time our students reach high school, their math and science scores will lag behind dozens of other developed countries unless we do a better job creating STEM programs for our littlest learners.

I’ve had conversations with numerous educators in my district, and when I ask them how they account for our nation’s sliding competencies the answers almost always come back to classroom funding. While the legislature must significantly increase funding for K-12 education, many citizens, local businesses and community organizations are working together to fund innovative initiatives that provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and arm them with the critical skills they will need to succeed in jobs of the future.

Students need materials like games, science projects and books to explore science, math, engineering and technology, but too often teachers end up using their own money to buy these materials for their students. Nationally, teachers spend an average of $400 annually for materials and supplies for their classrooms. Based on my conversations with teachers at Broadview-Thompson K-8 School, (in North Seattle) our local teachers typically spend more than the national average to ensure their students have the necessary learning materials.

Community-based organization and corporations can play an important role in making it easy for communities to support their local schools. For example, I recently participated in a classroom event at Broadview-Thomson K-8 School in Greenwood that was put together by the Fuel Your School program, a collaboration between DonorsChoose.org and Chevron.

During my visit to Broadview-Thompson K-8 School, kindergarteners were deeply engaged in a lesson using hands-on materials provided with help from this funding program. The classroom received a large box of games, books and project materials because our neighbors filled up their tanks at local participating Chevron stations during the month of October.

Here in King County, residents helped generate $600,000 last year that funded materials and school supplies, requested by local teachers for their classrooms. The Fuel Your School program is taking place again – right now – donating $1, up to another $600,000, to K-12 public schools when consumers fuel up with eight or more gallons at participating Chevron and Texaco stations during the month of October. (See previous article)

I’ll continue the fight in Olympia, but I’m also asking you to support the many outside funding opportunities that exist to support our children’s education. I encourage all of you to spread the word about the opportunity to support STEM, donate to charities and online funding organizations like DonorsChoose.org, contribute to your school foundation and volunteer at your local school. A little goes a long way. We all have the opportunity—and responsibility—to work together to ensure our students receive a world-class education from the very beginning.

Review - Avenue Q is a delightful production

Ready for Monsterssori School

Theatre Review: Avenue Q

Orchestrations and Arrangements by Stephen Oremus
Stage Directed / Choreographed by Lee Ann Hittenberger
Produced by Charles Enlow

Review By Doug Gochanour

Avenue Q is an enjoyable, masterful production of the famous Broadway Musical. It is definitely adult entertainment, despite the colorful puppets and exuberant songs, performed with excellence by this very talented cast. This musical soon ventures out of childhood fantasy and into real world social concerns.

Puppet Princeton, believably enlivened by Mike Engh, has moved clear out to Avenue Q, as the rents from Avenues A through P are unaffordable. His song laments the uselessness of his recent expensive college degree. Princeton also realizes that he is lonely, and his life is without a purpose. A delightful array of Puppet Avenue Q residents begin to influence Princeton’s life.

Kiya Coon gives an amazing performance as Kate Monster, introducing an immediate chemistry / love interest for Princeton. Jordan Meeker provides a distraction for Princeton, in her role as lounge singer Lucy The Slut. Kayla Peeples pleases the audience as former child TV star Gary Coleman. Trekkie Monster, the porn fiend, is enlivened by Dima Progrebniak and Michelle Martinez. The Bad Idea Bears are so nicely naughty, as induced by Kaelyn Barnes and Paris Giese.

Lounge singer Lucy

Other outstanding performances as puppets or human characters include Daniel Ray Siller as Brian, Nick Edmondson as Nicky, Noah Bruckshen as Rod, Norah Peters as Mrs. Thistletwat and the right arm of Nicky, Marissa Correa as Newcomer, and Anna-Lisa Doebly as Ricky.

Morgan Dietkus sparkles as Christmas Eve. She plays an unsuccessful Japanese therapist with two MA degrees, always willing to provide consultations and quips to the neighborhood characters. She finally marries Brian in a Jewish wedding, and Kate Monster gets the boquet.

The cast keeps up precision comic timing, even as many have to operate a puppet along with their acting and singing, in full view of the audience. This all takes place with excellent direction, and also with great accompaniment by five talented musicians.

Issues addressed or undressed include racism, homophobia, loneliness, sex, nudity, obsession with porn, and “schadenfreude” – enjoyment derived from the suffering of others.

Eventually, the Avenue Q residents find purpose in an opportunity to help Kate Monster fund her dream of opening a Monsterssori School. Can she find love along the way? Be sure to find out by enjoying a performance of Avenue Q at the Shoreline Community College Theatre.

Purchase tickets online. General admission $16, Seniors and non-SCC students $12.
