Suspicious person seen at Madrona K-8 school in Edmonds

Edmonds Police report that on Saturday, October 10, a man was reportedly trying to get a group of kids to go into the woods with him at the Madrona K-8 school in Edmonds. He told them he needed help finding his dog.

A parent scared the man off and he ran into the woods.

He was a middle-aged white male, slightly overweight. He had shaggy brown hair. Wearing a blue jacket and jeans.

This is a good reminder to discuss these types of situations with your kids so they know what to do if you are not around!

Theater review: One Slight Hitch

One Slight Hitch
By Lewis Black
Directed by Christine Mosere
@ The Phoenix Theatre
October 9 – November 1, 2015

Review by Victoria Gilleland

Prepare to laugh out loud at this hilarious romantic comedy set in 1981 suburban Cincinnati, Ohio. Remember the good old days? Reagan was President, Raiders of the Lost Arc was #1 at the Box Office, JR and Sue Ellen were duking it out on Dallas, and TAB was still a popular diet drink.

Meet the Coleman Family ... It’s the day of daughter Courtney’s wedding. Since she didn’t have the wedding of her dreams 30 years earlier, Mom Delia is determined to make this wedding perfect. ‘One Slight Hitch’ turns out to be the sudden uninvited reappearance of Ryan, Courtney’s ex-boyfriend, who knew nothing of the planned wedding.

The first character we meet is bouncy teenage daughter P.B. who is convincingly and energetically played by Rebekah Dawn. P.B. acts as narrator while she dances around the stage with her Walkman playing ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ and Jessie’s Girl’. She makes the 80’s look like a really fun time!

Courtney, played by Elizabeth Adkisson, is the typical 20 something young woman who is ready to ‘tie the knot’ with Mr. Right. Harper is that Mr. Right. He is reserved, polite, caring, and well groomed. Ryan the ‘Ex’ is the opposite:  a self-absorbed ne’er do well. In fact Ryan ends up wandering around the house wrapped in a towel for much of the play. Go figure that one!

Melanie Calderwood is superb as Delia, the mother of the bride. Delia is wound up to the extreme and trying desperately to micromanage every aspect of the fabulous wedding that has been planned. As counter to Delia, the father of the bride, Doc, is masterfully played by Keith Dahlgren. Doc is the voice of reason in the chaos which is this family although he definitely has his moments … For instance when he decides to carry on a conversation with the bride and groom figures residing on top of the wedding cake. That was fascinating!

The third daughter, Melanie, played by Simone Lawson rounds out the family. She’s a nurse who returns home dressed in white ... but maybe from a wild party - not the night shift - at the hospital? Lawson plays the role perfectly with a decidedly earthy vibe!

There’s an unexpected ending that might be a little too precious if the whole production wasn’t so well done. Accolades to the director, actors and creative team who made this zany walk down memory lane so much fun.

Go see it … You’ll like it!

LFP GovWatch endorses Hammond for contested LFP City Council seat

The Lake Forest Park Government Watch organization has endorsed candidate David Hammond for the only contested seat on the LFP City Council.

Hammond, now a Lake Forest Park Water District commissioner, is running on the November 3 general-election ballot against retired University of Washington administrator Phillipa Kassover for Council Position 4, the position that Jeff Johnson is giving up to run for mayor.

Johnson is running unopposed to replace retiring Mayor Mary Jane Goss. Incumbent council members Tom French and Catherine Stanford also are running unopposed.

The group said October 1 that it endorsed Hammond following an extensive interview with its endorsement committee.

The group noted these factors in Hammond’s favor:

· Better prioritization of City funds, including the need for better management of capital funding.
· The need to implement a performance management and measurement process.
· Regional funding for Washington Highway 522: “Our city and its residents are facing several years of construction,” a GovWatch press release said. “He thinks it is critical to approach this issue as an opportunity.”
· The need for better communication among City Council, administration, and residents, and the need for greater transparency and accountability to LFP residents, as well as a process with greater resident input on City issues.

Hammond is an Air Force veteran, the holder of a degree in public administration and a former accountant with the state auditor’s office and the Washington State Ferry System. In 2010 he became director of internal audit at Sound Transit.

The organization’s press release said that the endorsement was unanimous.

LFP GovWatch calls itself a non-partisan group of LFP residents who are working for the benefit of all the citizens of Lake Forest Park. The group says that it is dedicated to ensuring that Lake Forest Park remains livable, affordable, and sustainable. It calls its mission to encourage, support, and promote a responsible and effective City government.

Ballots for the general election will be mailed Friday, October 16.

Haunted House at the Nile Golf Course

Text and photos by Geoff Vlcek

Have you been wanting to find a quality haunted house to visit but you haven't found the time yet? Well look no further than close to your own backyard! Haunted Nightmare at the Nile is the place for you.

Opening night was Friday night and it kicked off in spectacular fashion.

Clowns, zombies, ghouls and much more. The timing of the surprises are great and the cast does a wonderful job giving you the creeps. There are blood curdling screams, eerie sounds, hair-raising sights & frightening feelings along the whole trail.

Can you find the person inside the polka-dot room inside the 3-D house?

When you walk through the outdoor trail with fog and lightning and the animal eyes peeking at you from the dark, are you prepared for what comes next?

One of my favorite parts was the Ballinger Asylum. Try and keep your calm because it is nearly impossible to not be freaked out by the scenes in there!

It was such a great time I went on Friday night and then again on Saturday night. Well worth the cheap $15 entry fee. It has to rank as one of the best in the entire Pacific Northwest! Don't just take my word for it though, check it out for yourself before it closes on Oct 31st.

Looking for more kid appropriate scares? They are also open on Sunday, Oct 25 for Nile Halloween Family Funfest. It will feature bouncy houses, a car show, food, low-scare frights & Halloween fun!

More information can be found at their website, or on their Facebook page.

5th Annual Event - October 9, 10, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 and 11/1.

Forty-Four hazardous trees to be removed along Burke-Gilman Trail, starting Tuesday

Burke-Gilman Trail detour in Kenmore on Tuesday, Oct. 13

Crews are planning to remove a large cottonwood tree near the Burke-Gilman Trail’s intersection with 61st Ave. NE on Tuesday, Oct. 13, requiring a short detour through Log Boom Park, which is adjacent to the trail and work zone.

Flaggers will be on site to direct trail traffic around the construction site and through the park.

In follow-up to damage caused by the August 2015 windstorm, arborists from the City of Lake Forest Park and King County have determined that 44 Lombardy poplar trees along the Burke-Gilman trail suffer from root disease and other defects that make them prone to failure.

King County will remove the trees, located between 41st Avenue NE and Ballinger Way NE, sometime during October. To ensure the safety of trail users and motorists along Bothell Way NE, the trail will be closed during the tree removal, with detour routes to be posted by King County.

As compensation for their replacement, King County will pay into the City’s tree fund, and Lake Forest Park’s volunteer planting program will use the funds to plant new trees along the Burke-Gilman Trail over the next several months.

If you have questions or concerns, contact the City’s land use urban forestry intern Jake Tracy at 206-957-2833.

Groundbreaking held for Ronald Commons housing project

Compass Housing Alliance, Hopelink, and Ronald United Methodist Church broke ground October 12 on Ronald Commons, a new affordable housing project with an on-site 12,000-square-foot Integrated Service Center.

Ronald Commons will offer permanent, affordable housing to 60 formerly homeless and low-income households, including families and veterans. All sixty units are reserved for households earning 30 percent or 50 percent less than the Area Median Income, with rents well below area average. The property helps expand the availability of affordable housing in Shoreline where it is desperately needed.

“Compass Housing Alliance is very excited to be developing our first permanent housing facility in Shoreline to meet the need for affordable housing. Ronald Commons will be within a community where residents can access multiple supports on their path to stability as well as the schools, arts, and other amenities that make Shoreline such a wonderful place to live,” said Janet Pope, Compass Housing Alliance Executive Director.
View from the church parking lot

More than housing, Ronald Commons combines the resources, talent and vision of three organizations with deep roots in the community. Hopelink will own and operate a new Integrated Service Center on site with a grocery-style food bank and other critical services for the broader community.

“This groundbreaking celebrates the culmination of a dynamic long-term partnership and represents our shared vision to bring stability and progress to the lives of thousands more families in need in the greater Shoreline community,” Lauren Thomas, Executive Director of Hopelink, said. “Although Hopelink has long served this area, we are thrilled with creating our first permanent home together in Shoreline, as Ronald Commons will enable us to help more low-income families and individuals acquire the tools and skills they need in order to exit poverty for good.”

Ronald United Methodist Church has a long history of actively serving the local community, guided by a belief in “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.” As part of the Ronald Commons project, Ronald United Methodist has nearly completed a remodel of the church building that expands space for community partners and furthers its mission of community outreach.

“The Ronald Commons project began nearly 5 years ago as a vision for our faith community. We wanted very much to be in mission to our neighborhood and our community, as we are in mission in various ways all over the world. In creating Ronald Commons, we have crafted a unique partnership that bridges the sacred and the secular, and supports the mission and vision of Ronald, which is to be a diverse, faithful, active community reaching out in service, hospitality, and hope,” said Pastor Paula Mccutcheon, Pastor of Ronald United Methodist Church.

Compass Housing Alliance, Hopelink, and Ronald United Methodist Church will celebrated the groundbreaking with a ceremony and open house on Monday, October 12 at Ronald Commons, 17839 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline.

For Ronald Commons’ affordable housing construction, Compass Housing Alliance’s primary team includes development consultant Beacon Development Group, SMR Architects, and general contractor Walsh Construction.

Hopelink, which helped design their new space, will move
all their Shoreline activities to Ronald Commons

To finance Ronald Commons, Compass Housing Alliance has received a combination of funds and support from the City of Shoreline, King County Housing Finance Program, King County Veterans and Human Services Levy, WA State Housing Trust Fund, WA State Housing Finance Commission, Impact Capital, National Equity Fund, Bank of America, Home Depot Foundation, LISC/Met Life, McEachern Charitable Trust, WA State Department of Commerce, and the Sambataro Family Foundation. Compass Housing Alliance also invested $500,000 from their own previously held funds.
The first level includes the street view apartments and the rest is
a parking garage. This third level and the fourth level house most
of the apartment units.

Established in 1920, Compass Housing Alliance provides shelter, emergency support, self-sufficiency resources and affordable housing for men, women and families who are experiencing homelessness or living on very limited incomes in Seattle and King County. Recent affordable housing developments include Compass on Dexter in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, Dekko Place in downtown Seattle, and Nyer Urness House in Ballard.

Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities in north and east King County. With service centers in Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Shoreline, and Sno-Valley (Carnation), we are the largest nonprofit organization in the area. Hopelink programs and services focus on five key areas: food, financial assistance, housing and family development, adult education and employment and transportation/mobility. Programs are aimed at helping people achieve stability, and helping them gain the tools and skills they need to exit poverty for good.

Ronald United Methodist Church was founded more than 100 years ago, and moved to its present location in 1924 because the members wanted to be closer to the center of the community. The members of that time purchased the land by pledging an additional $100 toward the $1,600 purchase price. They raised this additional money through donations ranging from 10 cents to $5, and sometimes a bit more. Their dedication to the future, and their faith in the stewardship of resources, provided a place for the Ronald Commons project to be built 91 years later. The 2015 faith community of RUMC continues to build on the promise established all those years ago to be in service to our neighbors and our community and to provide, through this unique partnership with Compass and Hopelink, an expanded presence and wider range of resources to the community.

According to ESPN MediaZone,

The Dragons of Helen Bernstein High School play football in the shadow of the iconic Hollywood sign. But for the team’s players, there is very little glamour. Eighty-one percent of Bernstein's students rely on the school’s free lunch program, and most of the players hail from Los Angeles’ toughest neighborhoods.
Gangs, drugs, and broken families are constants in the lives of these teenagers, and a constant concern for their head coach, Masaki Matsumoto.
So Matsumoto felt he had to try something daring to help them. In the summer of 2013, he asked all the parents of his players to write handwritten letters of love to their children, detailing how much they are cared for and why they matter.
E:60’s Chris Connelly details the impact these letters had and how it echoed across the football field, the classroom, and into the players’ homes.

According to a story in The Seattle Times, Matsumoto compiled a 29-8 overall record at Bernstein, a school that had gone a combined 4-36 since it opened in 2008 before he arrived in 2012.

See the one-minute trailer here as players read parts of their letters.

Masaki Matsumoto attended Echo Lake Elementary and Kings Middle and High Schools, graduating in 2002.

When King's Schools named him their Distinguished Alumni of 2014, they said
"In 2013, Masaki was named the Coach of the Year in the Central League and also, due to all of the accomplishments on and off the field, he was awarded the LA Times' Football Coach of the Year."

The full interview will be shown on ESPN's newsmagazine E-60, Wednesday, October 14, 2015. Comcast channel 173 at 5pm.

ESPN has been filming about him and his team for one and a half years, after he was on the front page of LA Times, November 2013.

In that LA Times story, Bernstein said,
"If your goal is to win, you're never going to fulfill that every year," he said. "But if your goal is to change lives and be a positive impact on them and help them become better people, then I believe that's a win, and the wins on the scoreboard will come with that."

Now back in the Northwest, he is a teacher and head football coach in Lincoln High School in Tacoma and his team is undefeated.

Wall collapses in transit base underpass

According to an article on KOMO.com, a concrete wall in the underpass for the Metro Transit Center at 165th and I-5 collapsed in Saturday's rainstorm.

Travis Phelps, with the Washington State Department of Transportation, said the wall has had water buildup behind it over time and caused the wood underneath the concrete to weaken. The massive amounts of rain that fell on Saturday only added to the pressure behind the wall, which made it collapse, according to Phelps.

The north and sound HOV lanes in that area will be closed until repairs are complete.

Mudslide work underway on slide-prone areas near Everett and Mukilteo

Sounder Train

Multiple mudslides from the north end of the Sound Transit train route created delays for riders along the route, include those who take the train from Edmonds.

Sound Transit projects began in August at four slide-prone areas near Everett and Mukilteo, three near Mukilteo and the other near Everett. Work includes retaining walls, slide detection fences for early mudslide warning, erosion control and improved drainage systems.

The four projects are expected to be completed by the end of this month. Two other projects between Edmonds and Mukilteo were completed in 2013. The good news is that no train blocking events occurred in those two areas during the last rainy season.

The construction effort is part of the $16.1 million in federal funds targeted in six areas near Everett and Mukilteo to reduce the risk of mudslides. The State Department of Transportation, along with BNSF Railway Company, Amtrak, Sound Transit and local jurisdictions are working together on the mudslide issue between Everett and Seattle.

Meanwhile, many more riders are taking the Sounder north line this year. Through August, boardings were up 18 percent compared to 2014.
