Shoreline fire bond passing easily

By Evan Smith

Both Shoreline Fire Department propositions on the Tuesday ballot are on their way to passing.

Both were running well ahead of the required 60 percent approval rate in votes reported Thursday, and Prop. 2, a bond measure, finally met the validation rules that require bond issues to get approval from 60 percent of a number of votes equal to 40 percent of the number of people who voted in the previous statewide election. For Shoreline, that means 7,605 yes votes.

Election returns posted Thursday afternoon showed 7,547 votes to approve the bond measure and an 80 percent to 20 percent margin.

The measure would pay for updating buildings and equipment. It would cost less than the expiring bond measure.

Proposition 1, which would replace part of the property tax with a fire benefit charge, was leading 75 percent to 25 percent.

Reunion Island - where wreckage from missing plane was found

Reunion Island is east of Africa and Madagascar
Australia is far to the east
Google Earth map

National and local news have broken the story that the airplane part found on Reunion Island was, indeed, from the long-missing Malaysian flight 370 (see story in The Seattle Times).

Shoreline photographer Marc Weinberg was on Reunion in 2012.

It is a remote island and most people have never heard of it. We traveled there in February 2012.  It is a beautiful and well maintained island since France has been willing to provide significant funding for infrastructure, unlike other island that sought their independence and are without money to keep things running well.

Nez le Boeuf
Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

One beautiful place we visited was Nez le Boeuf, where people live in a beautiful valley which was carved out by the molten lava pouring from the volcano.

Piton de la Fournaise

We drove from the port city of St. Denis into the mountains of Reunion Island. Piton de la Fournaise is said to be the world's most active volcano dating back 500,000 years. 2010 was an especially active year with many eruptions. The largest and longest was on December 9, 2010 and lasted 2 days. If you look at that image closely you can see people walking around the rim of the opening within the caldera. This image was taken from Pas de Bellecombe at 7,582 feet above sea level.

Congressman Jim McDermott to receive Northwest Kidney Centers’ highest honor

Congressman McDermott
Northwest Kidney Centers is pleased to present the 2015 Clyde Shields Distinguished Service Award to U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Kidney Caucus.

The award will be presented Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at Northwest Kidney Centers Seattle dialysis clinic at 548 15th Avenue. A reception is scheduled from 1 to 3pm, with the ceremony at 1:30pm. The public is welcome for the ceremony, light refreshments and tours of the home dialysis training and support area.

Northwest Kidney Centers presents the award – its highest recognition – to a person who makes significant contributions to the welfare of kidney patients through advocacy, clinical care or research.

“There is no more long-term, vocal, loyal and patient-centered Congressional supporter of kidney patients than Rep. McDermott,” said Joyce F. Jackson, Northwest Kidney Centers president and CEO.

In 2002, McDermott co-founded the bipartisan Congressional Kidney Caucus, and he continues to co-chair it. The caucus aims to educate members of Congress and the public about the problem kidney disease poses for society and the federal government’s role in providing access to life-sustaining treatment.

He has authored many letters of support to Congressional colleagues, co-sponsored kidney legislation, and reached out to Medicare, the Food and Drug Administration and others to advocate for programs that support patients, especially those on home dialysis.

He has visited Northwest Kidney Centers facilities multiple times and he has spoken often to kidney patient groups in Seattle.

A psychiatrist, McDermott trained with and became a friend of Dr. Belding Scribner in the early days of dialysis. Scribner invented a device to make long-term dialysis possible, and Clyde Shields, namesake for the award, was the first patient to use it.

McDermott serves as senior member of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, ranking member of its subcommittee on health, and senior member of the House Budget Committee. In his 12th term, his seniority enables him to play an influential role in a wide range of issues, including Medicare.

He provided crucial early support for the Kidney Health Initiative and frequently serves as host of congressional briefings on kidney disease research. He has supported home dialysis patients by encouraging the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to update training payments for home dialysis. He requested a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the key factors that affect home dialysis use.

U.S. Rep. McDermott represents the 7th Congressional District which includes much of Seattle and all of Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

Shoreline fire bond supporters waiting for further vote counting

By Evan Smith

Shoreline Fire Chief Matt Cowan and other supporters of the two propositions on the Tuesday ballot have been watching voter turnout.

Both of the Shoreline Fire Department propositions on the primary-election ballot were running well ahead of the required 60 percent approval rate in votes reported Tuesday and Wednesday, but Prop. 2, a bond measure, had yet to meet the validation rules that require bond issues to get approval from 60 percent of a number of votes equal to 40 percent of the number of people who voted in the previous statewide election. For Shoreline, that means 7,605 yes votes.

Election returns posted Tuesday Wednesday afternoon showed 6,077 votes to approve the bond measure and a 79.76 percent to 20.24 percent margin.

That means that the measure needs 1,528 more votes of approval. That’s likely because elections officials still have counted only about 65 percent of the expected countywide votes.

Still Cowan says that he is waiting to see the additional votes come in.

The measure would pay for updating buildings and equipment. It would cost less than the expiring bond measure.

Proposition 1, which would replace part of the property tax with a fire benefit charge, was leading 74.34 percent to 25.66 percent.

As of Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., the ballot return rate in Shoreline was 27.84 percent, well ahead of the King County average of 24.28 percent. Officials had counted ballots from only 21.78 percent of registered Shoreline voters, 19.52 percent of all county voters.

Revised and updated 10:37pm

This fall the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council will be hosting a series of Art / Business Workshops designed to help you put your best foot forward. You’ve already done the hard work of pouring your talents and skills into your art, now let us help you take that next step and polish your professional side.

Participants will learn helpful tips on how they can protect themselves from the many toxic chemicals typically used in a variety of artistic mediums.

Donna Galstad, a Health and Environmental Investigator with the LHWMP Art Hazards team, will discuss art techniques, options for less-toxic art supplies and ways to reduce risks from chemicals, as well as other services.

6:30pm – Shoreline City Hall, Room 301

Polish your professional side! This workshop will go over various artwork pricing methods, proper artwork presentation and framing, knowing your market, and self-promotion tools. Car insurance scam

Don’t fall for Pay My Deductible offer for auto accidents

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler is alerting Washington consumers to be wary of any solicitation from the Pay My Deductible Club, which offers to pay your auto insurance deductible if you are involved in an accident.

Several payment options, including a lifetime membership, are offered to join the club and become eligible for the deductible payments.

The company claims to be based in Beverly Hills, CA. However, the firm is not licensed in Washington and is not authorized to do business here.

Although the company claims its deductible benefit is not insurance, the commissioner sees otherwise. To offer this product in Washington, the firm would need to apply for and receive approval to operate as a property and casualty company.

Other states have also alerted consumers about Pay My Deductible.

Some tips to consider if you do receive a solicitation from Pay My Deductible or any other company seeking to sell you an insurance product or one that sounds like it could be insurance:

  • Check the Washington Secretary of State’s website to see if the company is registered.
  • Search the OIC website to determine if the company is authorized to sell insurance in Washington.
  • Check the company’s website. If you get an error message such as “under construction” or that the security certificate is registered to another entity, consider those red flags.
  • Don’t give out any bank account information if you are suspicious about a company. If you've received an offer for this product, contact the OIC office and they will investigate.

Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace launch regional bike network

According to My Edmonds News, the cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace are launching Bike2Health, a collaborative effort to complete 11 critical missing links of the existing regional bicycle network in south Snohomish County (see map).

Funded by a $1.9 million grant from the Verdant Health Commission, the project will improve access to health and wellness choices, make bicycling safer and increase the region’s connectivity. Project design kicks off this month, with construction scheduled to begin in 2016.

Collectively the cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace have completed 23 miles of bicycle network over the past decade; however, much of this construction has been done separately by each city, which has resulted in a segmented bicycle network. This segmentation is one reason cited by residents for choosing to use other methods of travel.

Once complete, Bike2Health will create a regional bicycle network establishing several key north/south and east/west corridors and connecting major destinations (e.g. colleges, civic centers, employment centers, the Interurban Trail, etc.) and transit locations such as Swift bus rapid transit stations, transit centers and the Edmonds Ferry. In total, roughly ten miles of bicycle network will be completed or connected by installing shared lane markings, bicycle route signage and about six miles of new bicycle lanes.

Washington State Patrol phone compromised

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) Headquarter’ s telephone was compromised. The WSP received 30 complaints from citizens stating they were called by someone who falsely identified themselves as a WSP trooper.

According to the citizens, the caller impersonating a trooper accused the citizens of various violations including outstanding warrants, unpaid tickets, and unpaid school taxes.

The WSP does not call citizens to advise of violations, warrants, or collect fines.

If citizens receive phone calls from someone stating they are a WSP trooper calling to collect or advise of fines, they should do the following:

  • Do not answer any questions
  • Do not agree to pay any fines
  • Do not share any personal information
  • Hang up the telephone

The WSP takes these acts very seriously and is currently working on a solution to remedy the problem.

Guardian One to visit block parties for National Night Out

Shoreline Guardian One flight path for NNO

National Night Out Against Crime is tonight, Tuesday, August 4th.

Expect to see residential street closures, with picnic tables in the middle of the street, and groups of people gathering.

Police in both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park have vowed to try their best to visit every registered party and Fire won't be too far behind them.

King County Guardian One helicopter is scheduled to fly over every block party in Shoreline.

National Night Out is an opportunity for neighbors to meet each other. A street where people know each other is a place where it's easy to know when something is out of the normal. For example, if you know that your neighbor is not moving, you will be more likely to ask police to check when you see people emptying the contents of their house.

For tonight, it's about potato salad and a pleasant evening.

2015 property values mailed to Area 2 Central Shoreline residents

Assessors’ Office launches interactive LocalScape app which showcases property values and community trends

On July 30, 2015, the office of Assessor Lloyd Hara mailed the 2015 property valuation notices for Area 2 – Central Shoreline. Residential properties increased 9.8% on average; however, your individual property value may vary.

The office also launched LocalScape, a new interactive online app, to track area and individual property value changes online, along with a rich landscape of neighborhood data including census, education, permits, and sales. Residents may track property value changes specifically for Area 2 – Central Shoreline residents here. Individual property value history is available by selecting the “My Property” tab.

LocalScape recently earned a 2015 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) in the category of Civic Education and Public Information.

The King County Assessor’s Office annually revalues all properties and conducts a physical inspection on each property once every six years.

The 2015 property values are set as of January 1, 2015 and assessed at the full market value based on sales of comparable properties in the same area. For more information about property values, please contact the Assessor’s Office at 206-296-7300 or email us at assessor.info@kingcounty.gov.

Property owners have 60 days after the mailing date listed on the property valuation notice to file an appeal of their assessed value with the Board of Appeals/Equalization. The Board is an independent body, separate from the Assessor’s Office, and is comprised of King County residents like yourself.

Exemptions for qualified property owners
Some low-income seniors, disabled veterans, and disabled persons retired because of a disability may be eligible for a property tax deferral or exemption. The King County Assessor’s Office encourages you or those you know to contact our office to determine eligibility.

For King County taxpayers who need advice and assistance on property tax related matters, including appeals, contact the King County Tax Advisor at 206-477-1060 or by email.

Go Paperless!  Sign up for email property valuation notices

Property owners will be able to pre-register to receive future valuation notices electronically via email using the six-digit EVN code printed on the front of the postcard.  They will also be able to scan a QR code from the card with a mobile device to pull up their property information on eReal property.
