Executive Constantine's Best Starts for Kids initiative placed on November ballot

King County Executive Dow Constantine thanked the Metropolitan King County Council for voting 8-1 to place his Best Starts for Kids initiative on the Nov. 3, 2015 ballot.

The proposed six-year levy would provide funding for prevention and early intervention programs designed to increase the number of King County children and youth who reach adulthood healthy and ready to contribute to the region's prosperity.

Executive Constantine said, "Thanks to today's action by Councilmembers, voters will have the option to invest earlier in the development of our children and youth, when we have the greatest chance to help them reach their full potential.
"Best Starts for Kids is how we will transform the way we invest in our next generation, to finally provide the upstream solutions that prevent negative outcomes such as mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, and incarceration. By making the latest research and tools available to every parent and caregiver in our community, we will be able to produce the talented, creative and motivated workforce we need to remain a prosperous region.

Lake Forest Park Police update

From Chief Steve Sutton

This week has been crazy already. Thank you all for your patience over the weekend with the highway closure. Your police department with the assistance of Bothell PD conducted around the clock detours beginning Friday evening and ending early Monday morning. Several drivers attempted to go through the roadblocks, they were cited. We arrested one driver for DUI – thankfully he did not hit a worker!

On Sunday evening, a report of an interrupted burglary came in to dispatch. A couple returning home on 47th Ave NE found a burglar in the house and called 911 with a description.

Within minutes, an alert LFP Officer spotted the suspect and gave chase. After a foot pursuit led them to the Towne Center, the suspect was cornered by several of the construction workers on the highway job and a couple of citizens assisted our officers make a successful arrest.

Instead of filming the incident, our citizens helped .... and that is not the national trend – thank you! The suspect was booked for residential burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest. Year to date, we have arrested SIX suspects for burglaries that had just occurred.

Other Highlights of the Week:

On Monday, Federal Agents arrested Christopher Gates on Federal Weapons charges stemming from an arrest made here in LFP in May. Mr. Gates was arrested for Felon in Possession of a Firearm, along with other charges. He will likely be put away for a long time!

As many of you know, a tree fell over Bothell Way last night taking down power lines during rush hour. Bad Luck for sure! Public Works, State DOT, and Seattle City Light worked to open the road as soon as possible. Detours were set up at NE 165th through the beach and heights. Obviously this was a huge impact to those who live here and those who commute through here.

I have heard some rumors that people thought the highway closure was related to the weekend construction and were very critical of us. This was an act of nature and unavoidable! Thank you for your patience!

ICHS takes part in dental residency program, welcomes pair of new residents

Dr. Carol Lin (second from left) and Dr. Camille Pompeo (third from left) were recently welcomed by ICHS CEO Teresita Batayola (left) and Dr. Ji Choi, ICHS dental director (right), as the two dental residents began their practice at ICHS Shoreline Dental Clinic. The two came to ICHS through the New York University-Lutheran Medical Center Dental Medicine Advanced Education in General Dentistry (NYU-LMC AEGD) Residency Program.

International Community Health Services (ICHS) recently welcomed two new dentists who both hope to gain valuable clinical experience in a community health care setting through a new dental residency program.

Drs. Carol Lin and Camille Pompeo both expressed appreciation as they started work at the ICHS Shoreline Dental Clinic, and said they look forward to providing the best care they can to their patients.

The dentists came to ICHS through the New York University - Lutheran Medical Center Dental Medicine Advanced Education in General Dentistry (NYU-LMC AEGD) Residency Program. The program allows dental residents to advance their skills in general dentistry at select clinical sites in the country.

"We are very excited to be part of this program and to welcome Dr. Lin and Dr. Pompeo because we need to expose more dental professionals to the special joys and challenges of providing care in community health care settings," said Dr. Ji Choi, ICHS dental director.  "We hope we can help hone their skills working with a large and diverse population that we have here at ICHS."

The dental residents will practice at ICHS for the next two years.
"I am looking forward to my ICHS residency and excited to start learning from my mentors," said Dr. Pompeo, who received her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco.
"ICHS clinics are in high demand and the number of patients served is growing rapidly, so I believe I can make a difference here, too," she said.

Dr. Lin, who received her DDS degree from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern California, said starting the residency program has not been without challenge, but she hopes to learn the ropes quickly and make a difference in her patients' oral health.

"I feel like I am creating positive impact to the community and at the same time learning how to balance between perfectionism with realism," she said.  "I hope things will come eventually with more clinical experience."

Founded in 1973, ICHS is a non-profit community health center offering affordable primary medical and dental care, acupuncture, laboratory, pharmacy, behavioral health WIC, and health education services.

Were You in Lake Forest Park in 1986?

In June 1986, the City of Lake Forest Park celebrated its 25th anniversary with a family fun run, tennis tournament, and other events.

The anniversary banquet included unveiling of the historical quilt, which now hangs in the City Hall lobby.

City staff recently received a donated t-shirt from the fun run event and is now looking for other memorabilia.

Contact Jennifer Martin at 206-368-5440 if you have any pictures or other items from the 25th anniversary that you'd be interested in donating or loaning to the City. They hope to assemble a display by the end of August.

“Mayor Rainforth reported the 25th Anniversary of the City appears to have been a success, largely through the efforts of committee chairperson, Pat Hunt.”

So let's start over, without comment.

Beavers Northwest to attempt to relocate beavers from Hillside Creek in Lake Forest Park

Tuesday, July 21, 2015

The City of Lake Forest Park has agreed to allow wildlife organization Beavers Northwest attempt to relocate beavers that recently built two dams in Hillside Creek. Beavers Northwest works to relocate beavers from areas of human/wildlife conflict. Its mission is to advocate for the many benefits beavers provide through research, outreach, and landowner assistance.

Currently, beavers have built dams in a small stream, creating ponding that is threatening a pedestrian safety project that will build several blocks of sidewalks in the vicinity of Brookside Elementary School. Construction must take place during the summer months, when school is closed and the street construction and culvert work can take place prior to the fall fish migration and spawning.

Beavers Northwest was contacted and recommended by the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation. The trapping devices are humane, live traps, and the beavers will be relocated to appropriate areas in tribal lands.

This is the same beaver difficulty the Shoreline School District experienced earlier this year. Lake Forest Park Councilmember Mark Phillips notes, “We are happy the Stewardship Foundation found this group, and we think the result will be a better outcome for all parties, especially the beavers.”

Citizens are asked to let the agency do its work and to keep a respectful distance from the wildlife. For more information about Beavers Northwest here.

A record number of people and dogs show up for Walk for Old Dogs at Cromwell Park

Photos by Old Dog Haven

The Fourth Annual Walk for Old Dogs and Old Dog Pageant was a stunning success last Sunday at Cromwell Park in Shoreline.

A record number of people and their dogs showed up to join in the festivities and over $80,000 was raised - $40,000 over the target goal.

Pageant Princesses

Thanks to the walk sponsors and volunteers, all money raised for the walk will be used to care for over 260 dogs in permanent foster care with Old Dog Haven. Old Dog Haven is not a shelter, but a network of homes where the dogs spend their senior years as part of a family, being loved and cared for.

It was a very hot day

Two Shoreline businesses were sponsors of this year’s walk, Steve McDonald of Seattle Realty and August Henrich of One Dog at A Time. Both businesses not only sponsored the walk, but formed walk teams which raised thousands of dollars to help the dogs.

“This year was our most successful walk to date,” said Paula Moreschi, coordinator of the Walk for Old Dogs.  “It was truly an amazing day and we are so thankful to all the volunteers, participants and donors who made it happen.”

Book Review by Aarene Storms: The Reason for Dragons

The Reason for Dragons by Christ Northrup and Jeff Stokely

16-year-old Wendell is a loser. His step-dad Ted thinks he's a wimp, the older kids bully him, and he has no friends ... until the night he accepts a dare to sneak into the old Renaissance Faire, and meets up with a red knight who warns of a dragon trying to incinerate the Faire.

Is the knight really a knight, or actually a mentally unstable former Faire employee? Wendall plays along for a while.

And then the dragon shows up.

This quick-paced, beautifully illustrated graphic novel will appeal to readers who appreciate a wobbly fictional line between fantasy and real life. No cussing, no sex, some violence.
