Weigela ‘Polka’

Weigela ‘Polka’, ‘Variegata’,  ‘Rubidor’, ‘Wine and Roses’ and ‘Midnight Wine’

Text and photos by Victoria Gilleland

How can I possibly ignore a family of shrubs so beautiful and easy to grow in Northwest gardens?   Four of these gorgeous shrubs are blooming their hearts out in my garden this spring. Weigela are very easy to grow healthy deciduous flowering shrubs which come in a variety of sizes and in many different flower and leaf colors. They bloom most profusely when grown in full to part sun. If grown in shade they tend to have a looser growth habit and to produce fewer flowers.

These plants are a draw for wildlife. Hummingbirds and other pollinators spend a great deal of time at the brightly colored funnel shaped flowers of Weigela.

Weigela ‘Polka’ is a fairly compact variety with bright pink flowers and green leaves and typically reaches 4 x 4 feet.  I'm amazed at the number of flowers produced on this small shrub in my part shade garden.

Weigela ‘Variegata’

Weigela ‘Variegata’ nana has lovely irregularly variegated foliage with flowers that range from pink to white.  The shrub reaches 4 x 4 feet and stays more compact in sun.  The colorful foliage is great with the solid green of so many other shrubs and perennials. It’s a standout in the shade garden as well with or without flowers because of its lively variegated foliage.

Weigela 'Rubidor'

Weigela ‘Rubidor’ has golden yellow foliage and ruby red flowers and may reach 6 x 6 feet high and wide.  Even without its red flowers the foliage is spectacular and energizes the garden.  When the flowers are out in force this plant is stunning!  I prune ‘Rubidor’ heavily right after flowering to keep it a smaller shrub.  If you happen to look for this plant in a nursery you may find it named as Weigela ‘Rubidor’, Weigela ‘Briant Rubidor’ or as Weigela ‘Olympiad’……a good example of the ever changing names of plants.

Weigela ‘Wine and Roses’ and ‘Midnight Wine’

Weigela ‘Wine and Roses’ and ‘Midnight Wine’ have burgundy foliage and dark pink flowers. The foliage is more of a bronze or dark green in shade.  ‘Wine and Roses’ may reach 5 x 5 feet or more.  ‘Midnight Wine’ is a dwarf variety similar in color to ‘Wine and Roses’ and typically 2 x 2 feet that fits well in containers or smaller spaces.

There are many other Weigela varieties available that would make fine additions to the garden.  All of them can be trimmed back right after flowering to keep them more compact.  Enjoy Weigela in local gardens now or plant one in your garden for a splash of spring flower color and colorful foliage throughout the growing season.

 (Botanical Name:  Weigela hybrids  )

Lynn Von Schlieder, Director of Shoreline Community College’s Nursing program, received one of two Shining Star awards from the King County Nurses Association (KCNA) on Thursday, May 7 at their Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony. The Shining Star awards are presented to nurses who demonstrate excellence in their areas of practice or contribute significantly to the nursing profession.

Von Schlieder has more than 46 years of experience in nursing in both civilian and military settings. Her background includes emergency nursing, critical care, medical-surgical, pediatrics and flight nursing. Von Schlieder has also served on KCNA’s Board of Directors.

Von Schlieder was nominated for the Shining Star award by Nursing Program Coordinator Mary Burroughs and by 2014 winter graduate, Marcus Engley.

“When I found out I was nominated by a colleague and a former grad,” said Von Schlieder, “that just filled my heart.”

In her nomination form, Burroughs wrote that Von Schlieder “is committed to excellence” and “handles a very complex job with grace.”

Burroughs added that Von Schlieder’s “leadership style focuses on communication and faculty involvement” and that she’s “brought the faculty together, improved communication, diminished isolation between quarters and initiated several quality improvement activities.”

“She has always been our shining star, now I would like her to have recognition of this by the professional organization nearest to her heart,” Burroughs concluded in her nomination.

“As an educator,” Von Schlieder said, “I love nothing more than helping other nurses grow whether they be fellow faculty or students. And we really do have such an excellent program here, which is evidenced in the awards our students win and the successful careers they go on to have. I stay here because I love what I do, which is impacting the lives of fellow nurses.”

Von Schlieder was also the recipient of SCC’s Exceptional Faculty award for 2013-2014.

Shorewood takes 21-4 baseball record into state 3A semifinals and finals after regional victories

Lake Washington

The Shorewood baseball team takes a 21-4 record into the state 3A semifinals and finals Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, at the Husky Ballpark, after victories over Lake Washington and Auburn Mountainview in first-round and quarterfinal games in regional play in Bellevue Saturday, May 23.

The T-birds will meet Central Kitsap at 7pm Friday at the Husky Ballpark in the second game of a semifinal doubleheader, with Bainbridge and Mercer Island playing in the first game at 4pm. The winners play Saturday for the championship, and the semifinal losers play Saturday for third place.

Coach Wyatt Tonkin

Our news partner, the Seattle Times said this about the regional games:

“The quarterfinal win, which started with Shorewood facing a 3-0 deficit in the first, was far from the biggest obstacle the Thunderbirds faced Saturday. That came in the form of a 1-0 win in 12 innings over Lake Washington (17-6).
“Shorewood’s Ian Oxnevad and Lake Washington’s Ryan Horita went toe-to-toe in that game, providing a pitching duel of epic proportions. Horita, a senior, lasted 10 innings in what would prove to be his final high school game. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 10 on 119 pitches.
“Oxnevad allowed six hits in 11 innings, striking out five and walking one on 119 pitches to earn the win. The left-hander minimized potential damage by picking four runners off first base.”

Shorewood's Max Wagner scored the only run of the game in the top of the 12th inning. Grant Jones drove in the run with a single to make Oxnevad the winning pitcher. Cole McKisson pitched the bottom of the 12th for the save; then he pitched the full seven innings of the victory over Mountainview.

FTD, Classmates.com to pay $11M over deceptive practices allegations

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Restitution available for eligible Classmates subscribers

Attorney General Bob Ferguson joined with attorneys general from 21 other states to announce that social networking site Classmates.com and floral delivery company FTD have agreed to pay $11 million to resolve allegations the companies engaged in misleading advertising and billing practices.

The states allege that Classmates, Inc. (Classmates), Florists’ Transworld Delivery, Inc. and FTD.com, Inc. (collectively, FTD), engaged in misleading, unfair and deceptive practices in violation of state consumer protection laws. The businesses were affiliates, until they spun off to form independent companies in 2013.

The states’ investigation focused on the companies’ relationships with third-party marketing partners like discount buying clubs and travel rewards programs. These groups used “negative option marketing,” a sales practice requiring consumers to either opt out or be treated as having assented to charges.

Unbeknownst to the consumer, Classmates and FTD would share consumers’ personal information, including credit card account numbers (a practice known as “data pass”) so that the consumer could be billed for these offers if they did not opt out. Congress banned data pass in Internet transactions in 2010 with the passage of the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act.

Today’s agreement also provides for restitution to eligible consumers who were enrolled into Classmates’ subscription service without authorization or who experienced difficulty when trying to cancel their Classmates subscriptions.

The attorneys general investigated Classmates’ renewal and cancellation practices in connection with subscription services offered to consumers through its website, Classmates.com. Classmates subscribers are eligible for restitution if Classmates charged them for a subscription without their authorization, obtained their authorization through a misrepresentation or omission when the consumer initially subscribed to the service, or charged the consumer after the consumer cancelled the subscription.

Washington consumers who believe they are eligible for Classmates subscription refunds are urged to file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office before Aug. 24, 2015.  Consumers who previously filed complaints with the AGO regarding Classmates’ renewal and cancellation practices may also receive restitution under the settlement.

SCC student film showcased at SIFF

A scene from Refraction, student film
shown at the SIFF

Would you choose love or freedom? That’s the quandary the lead character of the short student film “REFRACTION” finds himself in after the law becomes aware he’s cloned his wife in a world in which cloning is illegal.

The film’s central question was compelling enough to earn it a coveted spot at the Seattle International Film Festival and the honor of being the first entirely student-driven film from SCC to make it to the festival.

The film was made in last year’s Shoreline Community College Production II class, which aims at emulating a working set as much as possible.

“This is a group of students making a professional film,” said film and video professor Kris Boustedt. “And that professionalism is validated by virtue of it being admitted into one of the world’s premier international film festivals.”

“I wanted to write something different than what everyone else was writing,” Cook said of his sci-fi script that’s set in the near future. “I wanted to write sci-fi that deals with the people involved and their relationships rather than with special effects and technology.”

The film was shot over four days and then spent a year in post production. By the time SIFF’s deadline approached, editing was only 75% complete and the film’s director and editor, Bruce Stead, rushed to finish it in time for submission.

“There was a mad scramble to get it in and then for a few days after I tried really hard not to get my hopes up,” Stead said. “Then I got an email that it was accepted and I got really excited, which was immediately replaced by being nervous about all the work needing to be done to get it to a place where we could show it to an audience of 400 people.”

Stead and the team got it polished and the film, which was shot on a budget of just $4,500, showed this past Sunday as part of the Northern Exposure series at SIFF.

“My creative career started in the darkroom. Photography was my passion but as it became harder to find the chemicals and the time to be in the darkroom I discovered jewelry.

“After several years of running a jewelry business I discovered a way to combine my two loves. The images on my photographic jewelry come from my third favorite thing – walking my dogs. I have found so many wonderful things strolling in my neighborhood. They find their way into my light box and eventually into a jewelry element. It is almost as magical as the darkroom.

“Buttons have always played a central character in my work. By making my own buttons and elements out of these photographs they become wearable fine art. Each piece is a little different from the next.  They are all handmade by me.

“Last year I enlarged one of the photographs to hang in my studio and discovered that they want to be wall art as well as jewelry. Simple and yet so complex, we rarely look at many of these items for more than a minute in our daily lives. When you take them out of the surrounding world you can really appreciate their intricacies.”
