Shorecrest, Shorewood listed among top high schools in national rankings

Shorecrest High School 2015

Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools have been recognized for student achievement in two recent prestigious national rankings.

Shorecrest has been awarded a silver medal for the fourth consecutive year for U.S. News and World Report's 2015 ranking of the Best High Schools

Shorecrest is ranked 14th in Washington by U.S. News out of 458 high schools in the state, and 739th in America out of more than 29,000 high schools. Last year Shorecrest ranked 19th in the state. Shorecrest will again receive silver medal status for its academic achievement. U.S. News awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals to the top-performing schools.

Shorewood is ranked 25th in the state in the 2015 rankings of America’s Most Challenging High Schools by The Washington Post.

Both rankings heavily weight school performance in AP (Advance Placement) courses. Shoreline Schools offers 19 AP courses to students this year.

America’s Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index formula that’s a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates.

To create the 2015 Best High Schools rankings, U.S. News worked with RTI International, a North Carolina-based research firm. High schools were evaluated in three stages.

First, U.S. News looked at overall student performance on state-required tests. Schools had to perform better than average to pass, but because of a slight change to the methodology this year, more schools qualified for the rankings.

Then, U.S. News factored in how effectively schools educated their low-income and minority students. Finally, schools were assessed on how well they prepared students for college.

High schools that made it through this analysis were then eligible to be ranked nationally, in terms of college readiness. U.S. News determines the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work by analyzing student success in Advanced Placement (AP) which includes college-level courses.

Einstein student wins national Reflections award for photography

Photography by Athena Pentcholov

Athena Pentcholov, an eighth grader at Einstein Middle School in Shoreline, has been awarded a National PTA Reflections Award of Excellence for Photography for an inspiring series of photographs showing herself during stages of treatment for cancer and subsequent recovery.

The theme 2014-2015 National PTA Reflections Arts Program was "The World Would Be a Better Place If..."

Athena titled her photographs, “The World Would Be a Better Place If There Was A Cure.” She was diagnosed with cancer as a student at Meridian Park, subsequently underwent treatment, including a bone marrow transplant and is doing well.

Athena’s work has now been honored at the school, district, state and national levels. The national winners will have their art displayed on the National PTA Web site and at the U.S. Department of Education beginning in January.

Annually, thousands of students will reflect on a common theme and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

Experts in the visual, literary and performing arts review national PTA Reflections submissions. Judges look for personal interpretations on the program theme that best exemplify creativity and technical skill.

Shoreline Councilman Salomon gets another challenger

By Evan Smith

Shoreline City Councilman Jesse Salomon has a new challenger for the coming election.

He's Michael Bachety, a Richmond Highlands resident who ran an unofficial write-in campaign in the 2013 council election. The 2013 campaign was unofficial because Bachety missed the deadline for being an official write-in candidate who would have votes counted even with minor errors.

Bachety, Salomon and challenger Lorn Richey have filed for the position.

Filing continues through Friday.

With three candidates, the position will appear on the August primary ballot with the top two vote getters advancing to the November general election.

The position that Councilman Chris Eggen is giving up also is likely to have a primary. Jessica Cafferty and Keith Scully have filed, with Ginny Scantlebury expected to join them.

Councilwoman Doris McConnell is the only candidate to have filed through Wednesday for the position that she has held for two four-year terms.

Shoreline Police arrest two of Washington's Most Wanted

Arrested in Shoreline Wednesday

This morning Shoreline police along with Seattle police detectives and Department of Corrections officers arrested two of Washington’s Most Wanted in the 16600 block of Stone Ave N.

They are suspects in at least one Shoreline Burglary as well as fraud and theft cases in the Puget Sound area. The two were taken into custody without incident.

Little Bernie Howe III and Lisa McCambridge were sitting on the couch smoking heroin off of tinfoil when officers arrested them this morning, say police.
Shoreline Det. Cary Coblantz and Seattle Det. Randy Maxwell tracked the two Washington’s Most Wanted fugitives to a home in Shoreline after receiving Crime Stoppers tips on their location.
McCambridge had apparently tried to dye her hair blonde to disguise herself but the resulting color was more orange.
Detectives from Shoreline Police along with DOC Officers assisted them and together they successfully arrested both suspects without incident on their outstanding warrants and pending cases.
They were booked into the King County Jail.
Prosecutors have charged them with identity theft in connection with a Ballard home burglary in which a family dog was injured when thieves kicked down the back door.
Howe and McCambridge were identified by WMW viewers from surveillance video of them using the burglary victim’s stolen credit cards at numerous stores in King and Snohomish County.

This is not the first time that Shoreline Det. Coblantz has captured one of Washington's Most Wanted. In 2013 he was honored for the capture of Bugs Gholson in a Shoreline motel. See previous story.

Nicole Schultz of Shoreline said she read her winning Lottery ticket 15 times before believing the $50,000 prize was real. She purchased the “Did I Win” Scratch ticket on April 25 from the Ridgecrest 7-Eleven (16506 5th Ave NE) in Shoreline.

“First, I called everyone in my family. No one believed I actually won!” Schultz told Lottery officials. “They're going to believe me soon – because I have some exciting surprises planned.”

Schultz explained she has a friend suffering from a terminal illness, and is thrilled to surprise him with a gift he has always wanted. “His favorite baseball team is the St. Louis Cardinals. I'd love nothing more than to take him to a game.”

She added that she is taking her 4-year-old son to Disneyland. “He will be so excited! Then, I have a big surprise for my other family members. In June, at our big family golf reunion, I’m going to treat everyone to the first round!”

The lifelong Washington resident is most excited about being able to treat others, and said she will continue to play the Lottery in hopes of winning again.

Nicole bought her winning ticket at the
Ridgecrest 7-11 at 165th and 5th NE

Shoreline Councilman Roberts to run for County Elections Director

By Evan Smith

Shoreline City Councilman Christopher Roberts has filed to run for King County elections director.

Our news partner, the Seattle Times, reported Monday that current Elections Director Sherril Huff had given up plans to run for a third term, citing personal and health reasons.

Roberts said Tuesday that he decided to run for the position once he heard that Huff wouldn't run.

He said that he is passionate about protecting the integrity of elections.

Roberts was the only candidate to file for the position through Tuesday. Clifford Greene, who ran against Huff in 2011, registered early this year with the state Public Disclosure Commission as a candidate for elections director, now has filed to run for a Federal Way city council position.

If three or more candidates file for the position it will appear on the August primary ballot with the top two vote getters advancing to the November general-election ballot. If only one or two candidates file, the position will appear only on the November ballot.

Roberts noted that he had been a teaching assistant for a class that dealt with the Federal Voting Rights Act when he was doing Ph.D. studies at the University of Washington.

He won election to the Shoreline Council in 2009 and re-election in 2013. He has held positions in the 32nd District Democrats and represented the district on the state Democratic rules committee, but he says that he has bipartisan roots, noting his work as an assistant to a Republican legislator in Oregon.

Shorewood soccer in loser out game Thursday

Tuesday night, Shorewood hosted Edmonds Woodway at Edmonds Stadium. The game started with Shorewood controlling much of the play, but in the 17th minute Jose Aleman dribbled from the outside right into the middle of the field and found side net on a nice left footed strike for a 1-0 lead that held through the first half.

In the second half Shorewood equalized at the 53rd minute on a goal by Kabir Khan that was assisted by Callahan Gobel. Play went back and forth until Edmonds crossed a ball far post and Senior Sofian Mahmoud headed it into the goal for the game winner 2-1.

Letter to the Editor: Gratitude and Pride For Our Teachers

To the Editor:

I was proud to be one of the citizen participants in the rally of teachers, students and community on Monday afternoon. The many speakers reminded us of the ethical imperative to fund our schools adequately and reduce class size.

I am a life-time resident in Shoreline, an alumni of Highland Terrace Elementary School's opening year; Butler Junior High (where Shorewood HS is now); and the old Shoreline HS (where the Shoreline Center is currently).

I am also the father of 6 Shoreline students, 2 of whom are successful college graduates, one graduating this weekend from Tufts and 2 more still in HS. And finally, my mom was a kindergarten teacher in the Shoreline district for her entire career.

Needless to say my ties to this area and school district run deep. The only thing I feel compelled to add to all of the wonderful words, enthusiasm and passion for learning that I witnessed at the rally is a deep, enduring gratitude.

We are truly blessed to have such dedicated teachers and staff and a community that stands behind them. Shoreline - you ROCK!

According to Ed Portnow of Earthcraft Services, the Goats will be back again in Shoreline in 2015.

He reports that all are healthy, happy and ready to eat up invasive plants.

We thank the City of Shoreline and the Shoreline community for their continued support!

For those of you with pasture land, Ed reports that he is always on the lookout for winter pasture for his goats, ideally located in Shoreline, Lake Forest, Kenmore, Bothell and Seattle (or thereabouts). If there is anyone who may have pasture available please contact him.

The goats are available for private invasive plant removal for homes, business, acreage, etc...

Last year we shared the goats with some school groups. It was a lot of fun for the goats, students and especially myself. We welcome and look forward to sharing the goats with interested school groups again in 2015. Contact Ed to make inquiries.
